Re: Any Photo Annuals arrived yet?

2018-05-17 Thread DagT
Thank you!

I got mine a couple of days ago and, actually, in these days we are receiving a
Annual Norwegian book with a lot more pictures but not close to the quality of
this book, both regarding the design, text and the pictures. As always I´m
honored to be allowed to contribute :-)

I learned from a taxfree shop in an airport (I think it was Heathrow) that
Lagavulin distillery had had a fire, and lost some of it´s production. It

Re: People's thoughts on Adobe CC photoshop

2017-11-15 Thread DagT
I use PS CC (now 2018).

It works OK, and especially after I got the K-1 and the kamera and lens
profiles were updated pretty fast. Too often a camera upgrade earlier meant an
updated PS too, so if you change cameras (too) often the price of the CC is not
that much.

On the other hand I´m not an advanced PS user, so I can´t answer any
complicated questions :-)

And, with the theme «Borders» and some recent history I think it was great to

PESO - K-1 in Krakow

2016-07-30 Thread DagT
I had a trip with K-1 in Krakow last week with FA*24, FA31, FA43, FA77 and
FA135.

K-1 is great, although a little heavy when you walk 20km a day taking pictures.
The 2.8-zooms would be too much. The files are great, and I love the two wheels
and possibility to lock some of the buttons on the back. No more unintentional
adjustments of the white balance :-)

The Limited lenses were as expected, but I´m a little disappointed over FA24
and FA135 wide open. Stopped down a couple of steps they are good.

I´ve tried it on K-3 and at least in that format it is great. «Kenspo» on
Pentaxforums is almost a neighbour and he loves it for rock conserts and
models. Very good flare control and sharpness. We will see soon if it is works
on K-1 he claims to be the first to get one (or two).

I think the pictures on the web site is about 10% of the total number of

Thanks again :-)

I see your point, and I think the things you mention are the ones I like about
the results. I think maybe my appreciation of silence is helpful in omitting
the unnecessary details, but the the crowds and the staging was a bit too much.
There are several other carnivals other places, not as staged, maybe not as
spectacular costumes, but probably more natural and playful. It would be nice
to try to take the same kind of pictures under those conditions.

And I really appreciate your comments to these pictures. It is something I can
use under other conditions too :-)

pictures.

Actually it was nice to be there with Pentax with some Limited lenses, among
lots of large lenses, flashes and tripods. I didn´t get very much attention
(and therefore very few cards) but for the most part managed to got the

Re: PESO - Carnival in Venice

2015-02-26 Thread DagT
Well Ann, you remind me of a friend who said this when he heard where I was
going: What´s a minimalist like you going to do in a place like that :-)

And my wife agrees with you.

But it was an interesting experience. I did try to work on the backgrounds and
what you could see of the eyes. To steal the small moments that were not
completely staged, and while I like the results I don´t think I´ll do it again.
I prefer a bit more silence.

as photography, it's your usual excellent talent shining through -
but the scene you encountered in Venice would have sent me running in the
other direction had I been there on two levels, lots of other photographers

as somewhat sinister in flavor. Like clowns.

Involving others is a fairly new thing for him, an extention og the self

there, arguably one (mis-)step removed from Terry Richardson.

I do now fully understand how the photographer/model relationship is
based on trust and intent. If both parties agree on boundaries and
establish trust, then the session will be creative and enjoyable. But
even still there could be doubts in the minds of outside observers --
after all, they aren't privy to the intents or established boundaries.

I think that a lot of people would accuse Mr. Minkkinen of having
worked a very clever scheme to get nude models to let him touch them,
very high on the list of model no-no's. Oh dear, my inner prude is

Well, of course we do. The advertising industry uses this as the basis for
selling us things. And I'm sure that how attractive I find the model weighs
in to how much time I'll spend looking at any particular photograph (not
 necessarily limited to nudes).

I've only done nude photography once; a studio session with a group of
photographers back in my university days. I'm not sure all the photographers
even had film in their cameras ... I only considered two of my shots worth
remembering; one was about the same pose as the 'flip' shot posted recently,
although without the tutu; the other was a model's-eye-view of the cluster of
photographers pointing cameras in her direction.

Apart from that, I believe the only other 'figure study' I can recall was a
shot I took on Bourbon Street when I was there for SIGGRAPH 2000. I intended
to use the image as the thumbnail and/or low-key backdrop for a web page
showing other shots from that trip (with the middle two zeroes of '2000' in
the title being provided by the obvious features), but never got round to
creating that gallery; in fact I'd forgotten it until my memory was jogged by
the thread here about a trip to New Orleans.

I have done nude photography five times (I think), and once with a male model.
Trying to work with a male model was interesting, but frustrating as I had a
hard time finding the lines and shapes interesting enough to photograph. It was
not the sexual part as the pictures were partially abstract, but the beautiful
curves I would look for on a female mode were impossible to find so I had to
try something different.

How this balance be achieved? Surely we can't ask people who have no
interest in a particular kind of photography (male nudes) to take up
 that kind of photography?

I agree with Mark.

Also I don´t agree that men are looking at women as objects when they take nude
photos. We may be programmed to this but I think most men look at women with
fascination. Not necessarily sexual, but graceful, beautiful or lots of other
feelings. Usually we look for beautiful motifs to photograph, so why not the
ones that fascinates us the most.

So men will prefer to take pictures of women. Maybe the women should get better

glasses of different refraction indexes. A filter in front of the whole

 cannot do that.
 Dario

Of course it can. Just not nearly as well or in the same fashion.
Not all that the HD coatings does is anti-reflective.
I suspect some of it is color-correcting as were the different SMC
 variations.
Collin, you can put the best filter in the world on an uncoated lens, and you
will get flare because of internal reflections. All a coated element can do
is keep reflections off of the element it is applied to at bay. Once the
light has moved to another piece of glass, it's a whole new ball game.
Lens coatings are primarily for flare protection. Any color correcting they
do is secondary, though possibly by design.

Or you may see it this way:
Independent of the lens quality a filter will add two more reflecting surfaces
reducing the overall quality. How much each of these surfaces reflect the light
and reduce the quality will depend on the coating. Uncoated each surface
reflect about 4% og the passing light. A surface with a good coating will
reflect a lot less, but I don't have the numbers of the HD-coating.

So the best solution is always to go without a filter if you don't want to
protect the front lens.

Re: Old/new lenses on FF (was K3 problem using flash and AA)

Purple fringing was a problem with A*135 on *istD, but it seals to be less on

Purple fringing as in sensor bloom happens in high contrast areas, I suspect
that in some ways, some very good on film, older lenses are too good for
digital. They achieve apparent high sharpness by emphasizing contrast which
 under many conditions exacerbates bloom.

On 10/16/2013 1:21 PM, Dario Bonazza wrote:
Practical experience shows that the best old FF lenses are quite decent
performers on APS-C sensors, sometimes comparable to good 'digital' lenses

fringing. That's because you get rid of the weaker part of their image
field. Oh, and that only applies to focale lengths around 35mm or longer
(most if not all older wide-angle lenses are much overperformed by current
 APS-C digital sensors).
On the other hand, I still have to find a single 'analog' lens which is
comparable to newer lens designs on FF sensors with a pixel count of 24 or
 36 MP.
Heck, even most FF digital designs cannot cope with the D800 sensor! Sure
you can use whatever lens you like on a modern FF DSLR (provided you can fit
and focus it), but don't expect to exploit their potential.

My Reply : I disagree with regards to full frame. As long as the corner
 performance of the FF lenses
matches 2/3 of the performance of the APSC lenses the overall system
 performance of FF will
be equal to or greater than the Aps performance. Generally speaking,
you dont need as high a
performance FF lenses for better overall system performance than apsc.
Its a larger format, it has
more overall lines of resolution even if the absolute line pairs/mm is
 lower.

Regard no AA filter, aliasing occurs when the incoming spatial
 frequencies are too fast
for the sampling. With a high resolution sensor and cheaper lower
 resolution lenses,
NO aliasing will likely occur. Aliasing is more likely to occur with
 super high spec ultra
high resolution * or APO lenses, not average or poor ones.

Cameras with no AA filter are going to separate the men from the

enjoy a lot more time in post-processing. This problem is
exacerbated by a full frame sensor which uses the corners of the image
circle that are getting cropped out by an APS-C camera. In short,
those who want a full frame DSLR are either going to have to use their
best lenses with it, or procure some.

 My reply:

I keep telling that to all those funky boys begging Pentax for a full
frame camera and counting on good lenses of the past they already own and
treasure. Once FF will be available, you'll have to buy a whole new lens
outfit based on new-generation lenses (provided they will be made
available) or be satisfied with so-so performance.

That's well known by Canon and Nikon shooters, and mostly neglected among
dreaming Pentaxians. In brief, putting together a Pentax FF outfit won't
cost you less than switching to Canon or Nikon, the advantage being you
won't have to do that all at once.

was a real challlenge trying to phrase it as there are people out there
doing a lot more work than you realize, and not come across as I do
all this stuff for you, what are you going to do for me?. I hope
 I succeeded.

If you are reading this, chances are that I've taken photos of you. I have
nearly 1,600 people on my friends list, and I'm pretty sure it's not because
of my sparkling personality. My social awkwardness is not legendary, but it
is no secret. The reason that most people connect with me on social
networking sites is because I'm one of the people that gets decent photos at
those events where the cell phone photos always look like crap. In just
about any social group there are a few of us, generally three or four, that
you see at the various events, taking photos.
Something like half of the photos ever taken, have been taken in the past
year or two. To a first approximation, everybody now has a camera with them
all the time. You might call it a phone, but it's also a camera. Meanwhile,
the performance of dedicated cameras have improved at the exponential rate
that Gordon Moore noticed several decades ago. So, not only can just about
anyone take a photo at any time, but there's a decent chance that photo will
look OK, or at least the objects in it will probably be recognizable. But in
our various social groups, there are three or four of us who fairly regularly
hear someone admit that their photos don't turn out as well as ours.
There's a dirty secret that the people who make cameras won't tell you.
While cameras have advanced to the point that you no longer need to have a
good grasp of photographic fundamentals to take a pictures that is reasonably
well exposed, and even has subjects in focus, if you don't know your aperture
from a hole in the ground, chances are you won't take many good photos.
Sure, you'll get lucky now and then. Throw enough darts in the general
direction of the dart board and a few of them will hit the bullseye, but
quite frankly, most of your photos will be crap, particularly in anything but
 favorable light.
What camera companies will tell you is that to get good photos, you need good
(read expensive) cameras and lenses. This is true to a point. A good
photographer can get beautiful artistic photos with just about any working
camera that you put in their hands, but there are times when you simply need
the right tool for the job. If you want pictures of people dancing in a room
that is too dark to comfortably read in, you are going to need a pretty good
camera body, a decent lens, and in addition to knowing how to use them,
you're going to need a decent computer for processing those photos. You can
get these things on the cheap, relatively speaking, but if you're passionate
about photography chances are that you've spent well over a thousand dollars
on your kit. Actually, chances are that you've spent quite a few times that
on your kit, but if you're creative, you might be able to take and process
good photos in challenging light for under two or three thousand dollars.
So, those people getting better photos than you did so because they spent the
time to learn the basics of photography, and they spent more time practicing,
and they spent a fair chunk of money on decent camera and computer gear. I'm
not even going to start on the time, expense and effort involved with film
and darkroom, I've Been There, Done That, and while it has it's appeal, it is
beyond the scope of this discussion, and possibly even sanity in this day and
 age.
These are arguably reasons enough to appreciate the people taking those
photos of you dancing, riding bikes, playing guitar. racing cars or whatever.
  But we've barely even started.
If we're taking photos at an event, there are things that we're not doing,
and most of them are the reasons that we started going to those events at the
first place. If it's at a dance, and I'm taking photos, there isn't a pretty
girl in my arms moving to the music. If I'm at a class and taking photos,
I'm missing a lot of what the teacher is saying, because while the teacher is
talking, I'm also looking at the light, thinking about when something
interesting is going to happen, taking care not to disturb class myself and
very little of my brain is left over to absorb what is being taught.
I'm not saying that taking photos isn't fun. It is a lot of fun, or we
wouldn't be doing it on our own time, and giving away the photos for free.
There are a lot of reasons to give them away for free. The big
