RE: Limiteds Question :) - THANKS GUYS AND GIRLS!!! :D
I think this just about seals it. After having seen Wendy's, Jens', David's, Tom's and the links provided by Amita, I've decided to snag one or two of these lenses. I can see myself using the 77mm for portraiture and perhaps the 43mm as a walk around standard. The Wide Angle Boy in me yearns for the 31mm but I may want something wider and knowing that there is no limited wider than 31mm, I may just get disappointed. You'll have to remember that I will not be using these on an autofocus body - it'll be strictly manual focus on my old K1000 (which I'm more than happy to continue using as such) :) - so now you can all call me crazy for doing such a thing :-) Now to try to figure out where/when to buy :) Cheers and thank you, Dave

Whilst on my way to drop off some BW film from last weekend to a local lab I ran into young Frank during his day-to-day activities. We both didn't recognize each other at first due to the winter garb that must be donned during these cold grey months; however we soon exchanged how-do-you-dos and began discussing the benefits or drawbacks of chimping. It was nice to hear Frank say Really, it's Cotty who chimps the most on the PDML. I've seen him do it at GFM!! ;) After a good guffaw, we parted ways and we each went about our daily business. Maybe next time Dave Brooks and Jeff can be present with Brandon flying in from where ever he is hiding these days... ;) Smirkingly yours, Dave

There are times when the last thing you should be paying attention to is a photograph that you've already taken. And in any case, any time you're looking at the review screen you're not looking through the viewfinder, so you could miss a shot. Just how big a deal that is depends on what you shoot.

Today's screaming for chrome film that will be cross processed :) The colour in the sky and such should make for an interesting mix. I think the same storm also hit much of the MIdwest and Northeast US, so Paul, Ken and any other Michiganders (haven't seen Mark Cassino much lately, have we?) must have got hit, too. They were calling for over 12 inches, but this morning they said we only got around 7 - looking out the window, it sure looks like close to 10 or 12. Winds were high (40 km per hour - it wasn't a blizzard, which needs 50 km/h winds) and lowish temps (-17 C, with wind chill in the -30's) made for a fun day. I mean, literally, a fun day. I bought a Metro Pass, which allows me all day access to Toronto's excellent transit system, and took the street car and subway all around town, whilst luckless drivers slid their way about. Of course, a camera was mandatory in such conditions, and I got lots of cliche people trying to walk along, hands holding their collars to their face while the wind tugs at their coats, snow whipping by them shots. Hopefully, some of them will turn out. Most people walking by were so busy trying to negotiate the wind and snow they didn't even notice my camera. Today's beautiful and sunny. Whoa... The E100 series of film can be quite decent but you're probably right with resepct to the SW rather than say, perhaps, the VS. Since I've done a little scanning lately here are a couple of panoramas. First of all, a view of Lake Tekapo. I know there needs to be more of the lake at left, but I wanted to keep the fog in the frame. The colours may look a little bit wonky. I want to do the moon one even bigger, once I get the roll cutter attachment for my printer (I can cut 210mm manually but I'd rather not risk mishandling the big stuff). OT: Film Prices - Oy... expensive
I don't know if this has been brought up recently but if it has... I apologize Well, Maybe I haven't been paying that much attention to it but as of today my local camera store raised their Ilford prices. Fuji and Agfa are next (apparently) to jack theirs up by March 1. An example of the increased price? HP5+ 36 exp - was: $4.99 CDN/roll - now: $5.89 CDN/roll That's an 18% increase. Apparently some of the Ilford increases are upwards of 150% (this was according to the front counter film staff at the local shop - so I'm taking that large of an increase with a grain of salt for now). Maybe it's just me and since I haven't been shooting film that often but that increase alone is pricey considering I would still have to factor in processing costs (whether done at home or at a lab) and any printing that I may want done. What makes it hurt that much more is I still think that BW film is superior to the digital conversion of color jpegs or RAW images. This is just my opinion mind you and, as always, YMMV. I really think, even with all the bells and whistles and instant gratification that digital brings, I will still be buying film for a long time yet. Cheers Dave

My softbox (Photoflex 24x36) folds up and stores neatly into a carrying bag that came with the softbox - too bad the speed ring can't fold up though :D So basically the softbox is a bit longer than, yep, you guessed it, an umbrella. I like the effect with the soft-boxes, but it is hard to judge because of the difference in media, subject, etc. I think I like the more directional, but still soft light of the boxes. I have on ocassion put dark cloth over the umbrellas (sort of a 'barndoor' effect.) to get a bit more direction to the light. Absolutely, they excell at that, and the quality of the light can be very good. I have, however, come to prefer reflected light from an umbrella. I suspect it has something to do with the umbrella being a 3 dimensional light source, as opposed to the flat lighting from a soft box. Ribless umbrellas are nicer still, since the structure of the reflector isn't as obvious in the catchlights. Somewhere around the house, I have both a 60 umbrella and a 60 Moonlight softbox. RE: OT Virus warning (no hoax beleive me) :-(
Bob, While most of what you say makes perfect sense; the responsibility to maintain a PC is in the hands of the PC owner - whether it's updating an O/S or AntiVirus Software or if it's updating RAM, new Hard Drive etc. when necessary/warranted. There are many technicians out there who could do the updates/upgrades for any end/home user if the home user themselves feels that it is a daunting task. As for ensuring that the home user knows or finds out about the problems; we have a wonderful tool at our disposal which carries up to the minute news and, for the most part, help on how to fix the problems in simple step by step format. It's the Internet. I agree that the way the O/S is built is partially to blame - hell, we all know that Micro$oft has been building security weak O/S's since they've been around but at the same time once a hole is found, it is noted and there are areas where the end user can download a patch in a very short time. The problem is that people, in general, are lazy. They want everything done for them and if it's not done for them they feel more than happy to blame someone else rather than initially accepting the responsibility of owning and operating a PC just as they would, to use your analogy, owning and operating a vehicle. Most people rather use the Internet for porn or shopping or cameras *smirk* rather than use it as the great information tool that it is. There in lies part of the problem. Familiarity breeds contempt and as such, people become ignorant to the fact that there are malicious bits floating around out there can attack and disable their PC's. To borrow again from your analogy; sure, we wouldn't blame an automobile driver for an accident if there was a manufactured defect in the car itself; but if the driver/owner never changes the oil, or changes their tires when they go bald, or adjusts the mirrors/seats before driving and an accident occurs, we certainly can't blame the automobile manufacturer. Loading the responsibility for this onto the PC owners, rather than onto Microsoft who wrote such crap in the first place, is like blaming car drivers for crashes when the manufacturers build their cars wrong. I have 20+ years of IT experience and I still got hit by the worm. When I first got XP I kept getting a lot of damn stupid pop-up ads from pornographers through the background messenger service. It took me a couple of days to figure out how to turn it off. Other people I know put up with it for a very long time, completely baffled by what was going on. It only stopped when I turned it off for them. PCs are a consumer goodie, they're not just for geeks, yet the people who write these overblown, excessively complex operating systems - and it's not just Windows - seem to expect everybody who uses them to know everything there is to know about them. This is unrealistic, not to say arrogant, and is no doubt responsible, at least partly, for the widespread fear loathing of computers and of IT people. We're long overdue in our industry for a major change of attitude. We shouldn't expect people to be computer-literate, we should build systems that are people-literate. -- Cheers, Bobmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: OT Virus warning (no hoax beleive me) :-(
It _IS_ a nasty beast isn't it. We've had it going on at work all day - patching systems. Most are not compromised due to the backward nature of our company (most desktops are still running NT4 Workstation) so we're looking to lock down on the laptops running XP and 2000. It's killing XP laptops though - as the worm was designed with XP in mind but will attack NT and 2000 as noted. Win95, 98, Mac and WinME *shudder* are not affected. Weird thing is - I've left both my systems on all day - hooked up 24-7 to the net, and one of them is running Win2K server. Neither system was compromised and I've just finished patching and updating virus definitions. Both systems run behind an older 3 Com DSL router which, may have staved off the worm enough for me to survive without patches on the systems. RE: ist-D preview and DA 16-45mm F4 digital lens
Let's keep in mind that this is a Pre-Production model and that Pentax did not include any manuals to Phil Askey for review so he may have missed some functionality. On the plus side from what I've seen: excellent metering range; RAW mode; size and weight; 200 ISO (makes the F4 lenses make more sense), can use some of the old lenses. On the negative side: no price associated at time of writing, no samples provided (probably due to pre-production model), no on sale by date (i.e. still in pre-production) Let's hope Pentax gets their a$$ in gear and gets the product on the shelves before Fuji announce their S3 (full frame) or Canon announce their 20D (upgrade from the 10D). Small yes but so are all the other Pentax SLRs - and unfortunately - it doesn't help them in the marketplace. Yeah, I think this may actually be is number 1 selling point to people who arent already tied into the lens mount. A lot of people using prosumer cams could well be put off DSLRs due to the size and weight of the damn things. This is one of the main arguments behing the 4/3 system from olympus. But if we can have a body that small which still takes our existing glass, that has to be better than 4/3? The other advantage of 4/s is the smaller lenses, but Pentax seem to be looking at that too (as does Nikon). I'm disappointed that no images have been shown at higher than ISO 200. This makes me feel like there's nothing but trouble if you want to shoot at a higher ISO. Again, I'm waiting for full production tests. Someone else asked why ISO 200 rather than 100 or 50?? Perhaps because the CCD can't handle ISO's that low. Plus it gives Pentax the opportunity to sell slower lenses and basically get away with it. (i.e. You don't need f2.8; you'll never be shooting at anything below ISO 200 anyway; F4 will be just fine.) RE: *ist-D Canadian price
A Canon L 16-35 lens is about $1300 USD. That's 2.8 throughout. Compare the quality to anything close to what Pentax offers. The closest item is a 17-28 3.5-4.5 zoom - which is $435 USD - and slower and not as wide a range. Or if you want to compare a similar pro Pentax lens, the closest they can get is 20-35 F4 which is $475 USD - still slower by a full stop and not as wide an angle of view. Banter back and forth as you will, but having seen the quality images that the L lenses can produce, you're not going to come close with the Pentax range until Pentax can release a limited zoom lens series. RE: OT - DPReview reports UK pricing for Olympus E1
Even if the *ist D is in the price range of the 10D (not D10), it won't make too much of a difference. Canon already has a Rebel D in the works. They are announcing it sometime this fall. A consumer based DSLR with a smaller feature set and not as robust a body as the 10D. Price? $800 USD Street. The *ist D still has yet to see the light of day unfortunately. This means that at least initially the E-1 will be approximately £200 more than a Nikon D100 and £450 more than a Canon EOS-10D. Assuming the E-1's street price drops once the immediate rush is over we could see it matching the D100 at £1499 (inc. VAT). In my opinion this price is simply too high for a new SLR system. RE: Olympus 4/3 premiere
Overpriced yes. On the other hand.. a pre-production (or possibly production) model was supplied for a preview to Phil Askey and he'll post a preview later today (according to his site). When did Pentax say the *ist-D was going to be available again ? I'm beginning to think that the *ist-D is going to fall by the wayside by the time it is released - no one seems to have a pre production model in their hands for testing or such and in the meantime, they are getting trumped by companies that actually have produced a digital SLR. So although it's overpriced, I bet you'll be able to hold the E-1 in your hands at your local camera shop before you'll be able to hold the *ist-D. Giving a pre production model to a Pentaxian vs giving a pre production model to a Web or Magazine reviewer are two different things. In order for Pentax to prove itself as in the game they have to allow someone reputable from outside our little enclave to review or preview the camera. RE: Complaints
I've been staying out of this one for the most part but I must agree with Bruce here. The Date Function, while it may be handy for some, is sort of pointless in my books. The Contax G2 data back gave a lot more information - exposure info for example - that may be more useful and it imprinted it between frames (IIRC). OT: Power Thread - Battery Packs
Hi folks... In my quest for maintaining constant power to my numerous flashes (Metz and Vivitar) I'm curious to find out if any of you out there are using any Quantum Battery Packs. If you are, how do you like them? Which type are you using? As the spring and wedding season approach I know that sometimes NiMH may not be enough. Thanks a ton, Dave
RE: Let's Do It!! - So Vegas Then ?
It's not the central location I was hoping for (i.e. Toronto *smirk*) but it seems that for one reason or another most folks wanna do Vegas. I would suggest an early 2004 meeting as it would appear that the current state of world affairs may have things a bit chilly at least till the end of the year (gas prices/travel bans etc. etc. etc.) Mind you.. I'm only suggesting it.. if you guys want to go ahead for this year.. more power to ya !! :-) Let's see... Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, day trips to Arizona? Cheers, Dave
RE: Pentax needs USM and IS
Agreed - but Specs do play a part. I wouldn't purchase an automobile on looks alone (although many have) as that would be silly since I'm not made of . I also wouldn't purchase an automobile without test driving it first. The whole package has to be considered; and, as I often tell friends who are interested in purchasing a camera, Go into the store and hold it and fire it off and see what it feels like first, then check your specs and such later Cheers, Dave -Original Message- From: Mark Roberts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2003 7:20 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Pentax needs USM and IS I think the MZ-S is very inexpensive for its construction quality and capabilities. Hmm.. Perhaps we should organize something then.. one really big honking Pentax PDML meet ? RE: Pentax needs USM and IS
Ok.. Let's see if I can clarify a statement that I made earlier: The MZ-S is a failure I believe that's how I put it. Now, why do I feel this way? 1) Price - like all PDMLers, I whine about the cost of things - especially things that I can get for about half the cost of the MZ-S - The Elan 7 is not a flagship model - it's about 3 or 4 down from Canon's top O' the line EOS-1v - spec'd out it misses on a couple points but is half the price of the MZ-S 2) Availability of Accessories - I do recall, as many of you may or may not, Mr Brad Dobo (may he R.I.P.) complaining about having to traverse much of this province in search of at least one accessory (those of you who have the digest version and are intense enough to search for it can remind me which one it was) because Pentax Canada didn't have any in stock and the slow boat from Japan was taking far too long - Most major companies, if they are truly trying to get the pro market share, would, I believe, bend over backwards for their pro shooters. Pentax on the other hand shrug and offer you a nice PS camera instead. 3) Specs - for about $80 more (according to the BH) you can have an EOS 3 ($880) over the MZ-S ($799) - Viewfinder: for the EOS 3 - 97% coverage; Viewfinder for the MZ-S - 92% coverage. Both offer interchangeable screens Metering: for the EOS 3 - Evaluative metering (linkable to any point), Partial metering (approx. 8.5% of viewfinder at center), Center spot metering (approx. 2.4% of viewfinder at center), Spot metering (linked to focusing point at approx. 2.4% of viewfinder), Multi-spot metering (Max. 8 multi-spot metering entries), Center-weighted averaging metering - Range 0-20EV for the MZ-S - 6-Zone evaluative, Centerweighted, Spot - Range 0-21EV Focusing System: for the EOS 3 - 0-18EV range, up to 45 AF points (that's excessive in my books.. but hey.. some people want that), and eye controlled focus for the MZ-S - 1-18EV range, 6 AF points in a cross hair pattern Shutter Speed: for the EOS 3 - 30 - 1/8000 - syncs at 1/200 for the MZ-S - 30 - 1/6000 - syncs at 1/180 I'm going to stop listing spec's there - we all can look them up and quote them ad nauseum (which I'm sure you're getting already) but I think you see that the EOS 3 is only $80 more than the MZ-S and you're getting a bit more bang for your buck on the body. 4) Lenses - this really isn't a knock since you all know how good the Pentax glass is. This I admit to; however it's the old glass that I believe is worthy and the new stuff just hasn't been developed to be pro grade. At the same point in time the Canon and Nikon pro glass can be expensive but then it offers more options a la USM and IS. A good example: Canon 28-70 f2.8 L (USM) - $1029.00 USA or $999.95 Import Pentax 28-70 f2.8 SMC-FA - $999.95 So.. is the MZ-S a failure? As a flagship model; I'd say that it is. As a 3rd tier semi-pro/advanced amateur model - it's ok. If I had the $$$ now to choose and, had no apparent brand loyalty (and the Toronto PDML folk know that I don't) - I would do my research and probably go with the Canon EOS 3 for the extra $80 US. I never even included Nikon's F100 which would probably have been similar to the EOS 3 - but I figure Bruce Rubenstein or another Nikon shooter could probably chime in with their opinion on that one. I have no quarrel with those that chose the MZ-S. If you've got it going on with the camera and you dig it; more power to you. What I have a problem with is Pentax making a flagship model that is only 3rd tier of what other competing companies are making. As I stated before, this is why I feel that Pentax is happy with their current share of the 35mm market - They have stated that this year would be different; so far, it has been - let's hope that it continues and Pentax will prove me, and all the others out there hoping for something special, wrong. RE: Pentax needs USM and IS
Pal; Pentax's current flagship - MZ-S - is, even by those on this list, considered a failure. Pentax's last decent model was the MZ-5n IMHO. What's left? MZ-L, MZ-6 etc. none of which are beyond advanced amateur. The same could be said for Minolta's offerings outside of their nicely spec'd Maxxum 5/7/9 series. Canon and Nikon, while still aiming at entry level users still seem to want to develop and have developed pro grade cameras and lenses. Maybe it's because they can afford to, maybe it's because people want them, or maybe it's because they basically own that market niche. I don't believe that Pentax wants to, nor sees an opportunity to, take a share of that market. It would cost far too much money to begin developing a lens line or camera line that would be on par with the EOS-1/F5's offered by the competitors. I really think that Pentax is happy with it's share of the 35mm market. With respect to your reply regarding the lack of pro-grade equipment: 15 year old equipment doesn't cut it for everyone. Constant advances in lenses by other companies, including 3rd party makers, seems to be what the public (pro and amateur alike) seem to want. I'm not sure if I would consider a 15 year old lens, while it may have been top notch back in 1988, to be up to pro-grade standards today. The Limiteds were/are nice but even so, Pentax has made themselves an oddball by creating lenses that, when viewed by those outside the sphere of Pentaxian culture, as being strange. How many other companies are creating 77mm, 43mm and 31mm focal lengths? I'm merely saying that Pentax does not want to nor do they see a need to develop pro-level gear in 35mm format. For some people, this is perfectly fine, and acceptable, for others, it is not. I personally prefer the 15 year old stuff because I'm not going to sweat it when I toss it aside because I didn't spend a lot of cash on it. Just remember that if anyone holds onto their 15 year old equipment there will be a time, as I'm sure you're well aware, when they'll be turned away by Pentax themselves because they no longer support that equipment (i.e. LX for example) no matter how close to pro grade it used to be. REPLY: Canon target market have also always been entry level. They have in fact dominated this segment for 25 years. The wast majority of all Nikon and Canon gear sold is entry level. DAVE: This does not mean that they do not produce good cameras. It does, mean, however that they do not see a need to develop advanced amateur or pro level gear. REPLY: Pentax have always been present in the upper market segments. The majority of their lenses are far from entry level. In the 60's there wasn't any entry level as understood today and those old Pentax cameras and lenses are still enjoyed for their non-surpassed built quality. So your assesment isn't correct. Pentax have never actively marketed anything towards pros but thats a totally different issue. They haven't lacked pro grade equipment. It is just the fact that their current lenses are basically 15 years old technologically speaking. The 90's has been an era where Pentax have chosen preofitability over market share for 35mm slr's. Depending on the flash and what you're shooting Dave; NPH is pretty gosh darn good in my books - but I'm shooting mostly people. Portra NC would be my back up. NPZ rules - but it's expensive to shoot. Seeing as how it's going to be so gosh darn sunny.. I'm grabbing some chrome film this morning and dropping it into the Blad and trying out some 6x6 Provia down in the local markets (Kensington and St Lawrence for you Torontonians). I'm going to take along the ME-F and see what I can shoot with that as well - it came with this Sigma 35-70 2.8-4.0 zoom but I haven't got a clue what that's like. I've been so busy the last few weeks, both during the week and on weekends that I've not had time to do any shooting nor do much else other than support clients full time and part time. Maybe this weekend's warming trend will also allow me to not have to support them for a while yet :) I still owe some local PDML'rs some coin for things I've said I'll purchase but haven't gotten around to picking up... OT: Question For You Professional photogs out there
Ok folks, Here's the scenario. I shot a number of baby pics about 3-4 months ago for a young mother and her husband. I know them via her (the young mother's) mother-in-law. I fired off about 24 color 6x6's and 36 BW and 24 Color 35mm shots. I did a lot because the kids were super fidgety - one, the young girl, is just past two years old and the son is just over 3 months old. Needless to say it was hard for them to sit reasonably still for any length of time. Anyway, I handed over the proofs and waited till they were ready to order prints. I figured I got about 6-8 decent photos out of all the shots I took - mainly due to trying to maintain the kids attention :-) The kicker was, that the mother-in-law has been dealing with me and she said that her daughter-in-law (i.e. the mother of the kids) didn't like ANY of the photos. That was fine, I could deal with that but she added a comment that struck me as interesting. She said that in the future, if I'm going to give proofs back to clients, I should only hand them the good photos and toss out all the bad ones. My question to all of you: How do YOU handle your proofs when handing them back to clients? Do you sort and only hand the good ones back or do you give them the whole 9 yards so they know you're not holding anything back? I'm curious as this is sort of new per se to me. Gracias, Dave
