I should have clarified that! It is no Photoshop but compares well with mid-priced

For a freeware program it is fairly well specified but lacks curves
and layers.

Each imaging program has its own particular strengths and amongst the
ones I tend to use most when working in RGB are the following in no particular order:-

Tacmi Pixia, Photo Brush, Picture Window Pro 3.5, Ulead PhotoImpact
XL.

If I need to work in CMYK I tend to use Photoshop or Eye Spring
Studio.

So if anyone is looking for a 'free' program PhotoFiltre is well
worth trying and if you need a program for imaging and paint Tacmi
Pixia is another good free program.

Type 1 covers normal lenses

Type 3 covers some wide-angle and wide-angle zoom lenses

The cameras firmware will detect what lens is in use and applies a

Re: Question on SMC-FA 35mm f/2 lens and hood ...

2003-07-30 Thread Harold Owen
I just received an SMC-FA 35mm f/2 from BH, new in the box. It's a
beautiful lens, and the manual focus feel and the width of the
focusing ring is a bit better than my FA 50/1.4 and 28/2.8, as others
have commented. My question is about mounting the tulip hood --
unless I'm missing something completely, it seems the hood mounting
bayonet grooves on my lens aren't lined up correctly.

The white line on my lens that is used for lining up with the white
line on the hood for mounting purposes (line them up, then rotate the
hood until it clicks into place) is located at between 2 and 3
o'clock on the lens barrel with the front of the lens facing me.

I have just checked my SMC-FA 35m f/2 lens and viewed from the front of
the lens the white mark you describe is at approximately eleven o'clock.

My lens hood lines up correctly with the Pentax logo on the hood at 12
o'clock and the removable section of the lens hood is at 6 o'clock. It
is possible that you have a lens that has not been assembled correctly.

Photography Monthly reviews the *ist

2003-07-17 Thread Harold Owen
The UK magazine 'Photography Monthly' reviews the Pentax *ist in the
August issue.

Overall it is a favourable review for the new camera, the whats bad
items are:-

HANDLING:-'light spill from the AF points irritating'

EASE OF USE:- 'Very little to complain about'

FEATURES:- 'Little missing to be honest'

PERFORMANCE:- 'The AF and shutter are relatively loud'

The pluses they give the camera under the above sections far outweigh
the minuses.

The magazine gives the camera a score of 9/10

A second opinion is given by the magazines technical writer who noted
the following:-

The camera does want to always drop the shutter speed down as opposed
to the aperture, which can prove tricky for handholding. The mirror does
seem very clunky. Maybe the lightweight body has a big part to play in
this problem, but even when mounted on a tripod, I could see the whole
camera moving when firing.

As regard the above points use of shutter priority would overcome the
first problem and using the mirror lock should ensure minimal movement
of the camera when mounted on a tripod.

In its VERDICT panel one small quote is:-

The Pentax *ist represents a major improvement over the MZ-series
cameras. In fact, bar the semi-pro MZ-S model, it's the best Pentax
35mm SLR on the market.

One final quote from the magazines technical writer:-

With a digital version of this camera on the way, could the *ist range
of cameras be the new EOS? Only time will tell.

As an owner of an *ist I am happy with the features that the camera has
but it can be improved as regards AF and mirror noise, lets hope that
Pentax introduce some high end models based on the basic *ist design.

Will Digital SLRs improve consumer 35mm zoom lenses?

2003-07-10 Thread Harold Owen
Will lenses such as the Pentax 80-320mm (which according to reports I
have read is slightly soft at the 200-320mm range) be improved with the
advent of the forthcoming Pentax digital SLR?

Digital cameras in general allow you to alter the sharpness, contrast
and saturation settings, and numerous imaging programs allow one to
adjust barrel and pincushion distortion. It is also my understanding
that a lens that is not sharp at the edges would be improved on a
digital camera due to the size of the ccd sensor.

My reason for asking this question is that I have the opportunity to buy
a Pentax 80-320mm at a reasonable price and whilst it would be a reasonable
consumer lens on a SLR could in theory be improved by tweaking controls on a
digital camera.

Does this make sense or am I barking up the wrong tree!

Re: Will Digital SLRs improve consumer 35mm zoom lenses?

2003-07-10 Thread Harold Owen

Harold, the 80-320 at the long end is not much better in the center
than at the corners, and it doesn't improve a lot by stopping down
either. I think it's a nice lens just by this consistency of image
quality. However, I don't think that above 200 mm it'll fit the
sharpness requirements of the *ist d sensor (60 lppm).

Thanks for the information on the 80-320 Alin.

I was hoping that centre sharpness would have been a lot better than the
edges.

As I more interested in the 320 end of the lens I will just have to keep
an eye out for a reasonably priced 300mm prime, preferably Pentax or any
3rd party manufacturer who makes a decent 300mm f4.

From what other people have said about digital cameras and 35mm designed
zoom lenses I think I will wait until the ist D is on the market before
making any lens purchases!

From what you have said Tom regarding the Canon scenario, one is going
to have problems with some of the cheaper Pentax consumer zooms.

As has already been mentioned the *ist SLR has a single dial for

This is not a great problem (to me at least) as when in aperture priority

Even when in manual mode the single dial controls the shutter speed and
a combination of the Av button and the single dial controls the

Not as convenient as having individual dials for the shutter speeds and

Also rotating the select dial or I have just found out pressing the AE

*ist SLR and K-mount lenses

2003-06-04 Thread Harold Owen
I have been trying the *ist this morning with a couple of K-mount lenses
with the following results:-

Firstly custom function 17 has to be set to 2 to enable the shutter
release.

The K-mount lenses only function with the camera when it is either set
on AV mode or Manual mode.

On AV mode the camera shutter speed seems to relate to the maximum
aperture of the lens in use irrespective of what aperture you have
selected on the lens itself,

Therefore although you know what your aperture is you have no idea what
the corresponding shutter speed is going to be, I tried using the depth
of field preview to see if this would enable me to gauge the shutter
speed but depth of field preview does not work in AV mode with a K-mount
lens.

Hopefully when the shutter release is pressed an appropriate speed is
selected by the camera, will have to see what the colour negs look like!

Manual mode appears to be the only worthwhile mode with the K-mount
lenses, although you will need a hand-held meter as the integral one
does not function with the K-mount lenses, although the depth of field
preview does.

I found it easier to take a reading with a Weston meter and transfer the
shutter speed and aperture readings to the camera and lens, after
setting the aperture on the lens it is just a case of using the dial on
the camera to set the shutter speed.

I have been thinking of buying a modern hand-held meter for a while so
now might be the ideal time to purchase one, any recommendations for a
reasonably priced incident type meter?

*ist SLR now available in UK

A courier firm delivered an *ist SLR this morning.

Initial observations are that it is compact !

The camera body has been assembled in the Philippines and the lens was
assembled in Vietnam the overall finish of the camera is good.

At the moment I have not put the batteries in it or read the handbook
yet.

As a spectacle wearer I was keen to see how easy it was to see through
the viewfinder and it is excellent if I position my eye correctly all
the viewfinder area is visible.

Holding the camera in the right hand in the shooting position is quite
comfortable and being a left handed person I also tend to use my left
eye for focussing, which means my nose then comes into contact with my
thumb when holding the camera to my eye.

The nose/thumb contact would not occur with most people who I assume
use their right eye for focussing.

At the moment I am waiting for a BG-20 battery grip which is also on
order which should further improve the handling of the camera.

The camera/lens combination is relatively light and should be ideal when
cycling and not wishing to carry a heavy camera and additional lenses.

I would like to see a high-end camera based on this entry-level model.

At the moment I am waiting for the *ist SLR due in April, if it is not
available at that time, I will then buy a secondhand body.

After reading all the advice posted it will most probably be an MZ-5n
although I have not ruled out the MZ-3 or MZ-S as they are all within my
price range.

Cheers - Harry

I think if you will use AF most of the time, choose MZ-5n or even
MZ-L/MZ-6/ZX-6. MX is a fine camera if you want manual focus. However, many
parts are gone for the MX and you might need to pay the service bill for a
2ndhand body. Something to think about if you just want a backup.

 regards,
 Alan Chan

Suitable body for FA24mm lens?

2003-03-22 Thread Harold Owen

Whilst waiting for the release of the forthcoming * ist D I am looking
for advice regarding a camera body for use with FA lenses.

The body will be purchased second-hand to be used as a back-up to the *
* ist D, so far after reading advice about camera bodies on Bojidar
Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page page I am tending to favour the MX and
MZ5n models.

Any other recommendations?

Harry

Re: No politics, please

2003-03-19 Thread Harold Owen
I've noticed a few jibes and pokes at the French over the past couple
 of
days or week, what with their veto threat on Security Council. So far
nothing really terrible has been said, but it's starting...

I endorse what you have said, please refrain from making obnoxious
comments about the French it causes great offence to our French members
of this group.

They as individuals are not responsible for the decisions made by
French politicians no more than I am for the decisions made by English
politicians.

The weeks ahead are going to be difficult for all nationalities
associated with the forthcoming war on Iraq and though like many English
people I would have liked a second resolution in the U.N. it was not to
be.

Now the decisions have been made I will give 100% support to our British
and American forces in their efforts to destroy 'weapons of mass
destruction' and overthrow the Saddam regime.

My thoughts are with the members of our Armed forces and their families
at this sad time and also with the Iraqi people who are the innocent
victims of Saddam's regime.

Please end the vitriol and 'gung-ho' remarks on this group, there is no
glory in war only killing and sadness.

Any chance of asking them what the ISO settings are for the *ist D?

Are there any features that PDML members would like me to check, and
 what questions should I ask?

Hi Arnold,

Just one additional question will it be possible to find out whether
owners of the *ist D will be able to update the camera 'firmware' via
downloads from the various Pentax websites?

My present digital camera that I recently purchased requires for the
camera to be returned to the manufacturers service department (in
Portugal) for any firmware updates, and of course there is a charge for
this service, in addition I have been told that it takes six weeks!

*ist D Pentax prime lenses

2003-03-04 Thread Harold Owen
My favourite lens for use with a 35mm SLR is a 35mm F2.

From the Pentax prime lenses available at present which is the most
suitable for use with the *ist D that will give me more or less a 35mm
equivalent.?

Re: strange button on *ist-D (IS?)

2003-02-27 Thread Harold Owen
After looking at some pictures of the *ist-D on DPReview I rather
think it is for allowing the camera to communicate with ones computer
when it is necessary to upload images.

On the majority of digital cameras there is a 'play' mode and one has to
switch the camera into that mode before it will communicate with the
computer in order upload image files. Possibly pressing this button on
the Pentax serves the same purpose.

Just a guess. :-)
