Looking at it closely I discovered today that it is not stopping down properly when the lens is set to the A position. basically, it does not stop down at all at f 4.5 and 5.6, but then begins to stop down at f 6.7. The aperture blades seem to be about 1 stop off across the board, and the smallest aperture I can get looks to be f22, not f 32. When I set the aperture via the aperture ring, it stops down correctly. This performance is consistent on the three bodies I have that use both Aperture Ring and Body control of the aperture setting - the Pz-1p, *ist-D, and K10D. On other cameras - Mz-S and LX for example, this issue is moot since the aperture ring is used. I tested a couple other A lenses and they don't have this problem, so something is amiss with the 200. Last summer the lens (and my *ist-D) took a nasty six foot fall off a tripod. The grass was thick and the ground was soft, so aside from having to clean some mud off the filter on the front of the lens, I thought no harm was done. Now I wonder if the lever that controls the aperture setting on the camera was knocked out of alignment. Checking Pentax's website I see that most SMCP-A lenses are no longer serviced. For folks familiar with the lens mechanism - any thoughts about how repairable a problem like this might be? I looks like I can work around the problem by setting exposure comp to -1 stop and the aperture one stop smaller than I really want. but then I can't stop down beyond f22 (not that I want but someday I might) and, well, I just want it to work properly... there's no such thing as lenses in general. the best MF lenses are every bit as good as the best 35mm lenses (although more expensive). it's all a question of bang for a buck -- where the larger formats will probably loose. btw, P645 A300/4 ED IF *is* better than any pentax A-lens (non-macro) of a comparable FL. i know since i compared myself Zeiss 180/4 sonnar is every bit as good as *any* 35mm lens in 100mm range. Re: K10D Availability in U.S.
jeez, do you buy ever anything online (as some unscrupulous buyers do and avoid paying state taxes simultaneusly hurting local retailers) -- we should call this retail piracy, i guess... best mishka On 10/26/06, John Celio [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Granted, this is somewhat different from selling gray market cameras, but the loss of sales and profits is the same. Um, no it's not, it would be similar if you could clone cameras. Grey market import protection is in place simply to ensure that the local market can gouge local buyers. It's not gouging, it's staying in business. The costs of successfully running a business in one country or region can be substantially higher than running it in another country. This is why outsourcing of jobs has become such a major problem in recent years. A friend of mine whose job at Intel was outsourced referred to it as job piracy. In a country like the US, workers cost more, insurance and benefits cost more, rent costs more, etc., compared to some 2nd world country in southeast asia where gray market retailers get much of their stuff from. Thus, retailers in the more affluent regions have to charge more to stay in the black. The gray market undercuts their ability to stay in business, which affects not only the business itself but also its employees and the revenues and taxes it generates for local and higher governments. In other words, the gray market has an effect on entire industries and economies, not just local stores. There's also the fact that different countries have different import taxes, and some countries have sales taxes that others do not. A good example is the VAT that some UK travellers wanted to avoid by buying their cameras from me at my last job. There are reasons for these taxes to exist, the first and foremost is to ensure your government (local and national) has the money to continue to function. Unscrupulous dealers will do whatever they can to circumvent these costs, and unscrupulous or ignorant buyers will seek them out. On a large scale, this hurts the local and national economies and has been affecting the camera industry in particular for a long time now. It's one of the major reasons internet retailers have been successful at driving brick-and-mortar retailers out of business. I'd like to see how you felt if you were running a legitimate business and some jackoff came into town selling the same product, only at substantially less because he got it through illegal channels. The worst part is, you can't do anything to him because he's not located in a store: he's in a roving van that can go wherever buyers want him, which means he doesn't have the same costs you have associated with rent, insurance, employees, etc. Your business does not gouge customers, and provides services the other guy cannot or will not, but he's still successful because people don't realize he's hurting their economy. Your store goes out of business and your employees are now getting meager unemployment checks from the government (who is now getting less tax revenue, by the way) because they can't find work, all while the other guy keeps about his merry way taking more and more bites out of the economy until it dries up and he moves along to find greener pastures to slash burn. This is what the gray market is doing to the camera industry, leaving us with fewer and fewer real, respectable camera stores. I guess that's what you want, though. Enjoy! it's not a trivial matter. e.g. look at hasselblad. over the years its biggest competitor has become hasselblad -- used gear. so there is some delicate balance between a healthy secondary market that helps new sales and a used market that kills business. however, i think pentax had no reason to worry about lost lens sales since their older glass caters to a completely different market segment. and at this point they offer no product like this (fully mechanical, built like tank, silky smooth manual focus lenses). therefore i think it was a dumb desision on their part to ditch a feature that could bring them good PR and user loyalty, if nothing else. i would be very surprised if they haven't realized this yet. i am willing to bet that their professional body (whatever it will be) will have sTimulator. best, mishka (a few grands worth of *new* pentax lenses/cameras, if that matters) On 10/13/06, K.Takeshita [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 10/13/06 11:40 AM, William Robb, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If that obsolete lens gets resold, they don't see any of that money. So, I have absolutely no bias toward him. But my question is this. Is the used lens market also not helping the new lens sales? It is much like a used car market. People have to sell or trade-in old cars to buy new ones, and if the used ones won't sell and the world does not revolve, the new car sales might suffer as well? JCO's purchase of old classic lenses might be contributing to the new lens sales in a small way. I can see his frustration of not being able to use his rather large stock of lenses in new body etc, but it is also true that things progress. That's about where I stop. for the last couple of weeks, there's been 150 successful auctions for older lens over $50. that translates to about 4000/year. even if you that meny of those buyers participated in multiple auctions, i think the figure would still be of the order of a few thousands people/year. i also imagine that not everyone is buying the lenses every year, so the numbers need to be summed over a few years. all in all, i think 10K is a sensible rough (pessimistic) estimate. now, with monthly production rates of the order of 10-20K/months, that's about 5..10% of annual sales (and with the digital lifespan, that may be 5-10% of all sales). not a hell of a lot, but might be worth their while, considering that those sales will very likely be at premium prices. Re: OT: Question for for the Chemists out there
Deca- will precipitate fromf the solution. Septa- (7H2O) (not penta!) will come from deca- as it loses the water (e.g. heated). Don't evaporate it. Just cool down the (warm, ~50C) solution in a fridge to about 0C (32F), when it solubility drops to essentially zero. On 6/16/06, Tom C [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks! very good point. add to that climate control, and that would add up to quite a bit of maintanance. imo, dvd/tapes backup is just that -- for disaster recovery. it has to be done, yes, but it's kinda low priority (since true disasters are kinda low probability events). since the hard drives are dirt cheap right now, just having a few redundant copies (preferrably on different computers) should be OK. check their health (automatically) periodically, and they'll live forever. personaly, i am paranoid and i keep a copy of all stuff that matters off-site (out of country), online. that way, even if NYC is nuked, i will still have pictures of sashkas's first birthday at hand (if i have any hands left at that time). best, mishka On 4/27/06, Rob Studdert [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 27 Apr 2006 at 23:41, Kevin Waterson wrote: This one time, at band camp, Jostein [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Nobody includes me too :-) but I would very much like to establish a good practice for myself.
