It is *very* sharp and contrasty. I love mine. As a walkaround lens,
it's almost perfect (far superior to 16-50, which is quite heavy and
has 77mm filter)

 Hi!

I don't recall any significant discussion of this lens. Anyone owning it?
Or is it the general opinion of this list, that this lens is of insufficient
quality? How about distortion at 17 mm?

Does the word Hoover mean anything to you?
Seriously, it's sharp and contrasty enough, but the barrel distortion is
 awful.

LETS CLEAR THIS UP. IMHO, a lens series designation
should cover all functionalities like coverage, AF, aperture rings,

don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Cosina. Actually they are
quite like Pentax and usually offer excellent value for money. But these
Carl Zeiss lenses are far from that - Pentax own Limiteds are much
 better value IMO.

BTW Contax(Kyocera)/Cosina doesn't matter, both are building lenses in
some automated factory so I'd expect similar results. The price of
original Zeiss/Leica glass is higher because of the labour cost involved
(hand assembly, testing), while this is perhaps slightly above standard
mass production with fancy name on top of it (an unnecessarily high
 price IMHO).

Subject: Problem with A* 200 macro

I had some exposure problems while shooting with the A* 200 macro last
week. Looking at it closely I discovered today that it is not stopping
down properly when the lens is set to the A position. basically, it
does not stop down at all at f 4.5 and 5.6, but then begins to stop down

at f 6.7. The aperture blades seem to be about 1 stop off across the
board, and the smallest aperture I can get looks to be f22, not f 32.
When I set the aperture via the aperture ring, it stops down correctly.

This performance is consistent on the three bodies I have that use both
Aperture Ring and Body control of the aperture setting - the Pz-1p,
*ist-D, and K10D. On other cameras - Mz-S and LX for example, this
issue is moot since the aperture ring is used.

I tested a couple other A lenses and they don't have this problem, so
something is amiss with the 200.

Last summer the lens (and my *ist-D) took a nasty six foot fall off a
tripod. The grass was thick and the ground was soft, so aside from
having to clean some mud off the filter on the front of the lens, I
thought no harm was done. Now I wonder if the lever that controls the
aperture setting on the camera was knocked out of alignment.

Checking Pentax's website I see that most SMCP-A lenses are no longer
serviced. For folks familiar with the lens mechanism - any thoughts
about how repairable a problem like this might be?

I looks like I can work around the problem by setting exposure comp to
-1 stop and the aperture one stop smaller than I really want. but then I

can't stop down beyond f22 (not that I want but someday I might) and,
well, I just want it to work properly...

 Any advice would be appreciated...

incorrect. a 1:1 reproduction of an object 10mmx10mm is 10mmx10mm

The key thing is that the number of pixels or the density of the film
is irrelevant to magnification, which is what the example was

there's no such thing as lenses in general. the best MF lenses are

good as the best 35mm lenses (although more expensive). it's all a question of
bang for a buck -- where the larger formats will probably loose.

btw, P645 A300/4 ED IF *is* better than any pentax A-lens (non-macro)
of a comparable FL. i know since i compared myself

Zeiss 180/4 sonnar is every bit as good as *any* 35mm lens in 100mm range.
I don't even mention superachromats.

The test site quoted doesn't have many modern MF lens tested. But even an
old Rolleiflex there has numbers that would make many 35mm lenses envious.

Over at dpreview there are occasional posts from Ned Bunnell, who is

Recently he printed some K10D images on a large Epson printer--I don't
recall the model, but it was one of the highly-regarded current ones. He
suggested that you may not see much difference in resolution between 10
and 6 mp on the screen, but it is very evident when you print enlargements.

Onscreen, of course, whether you see a difference will depend on whether
 you crop.

On 10/26/06, John Celio [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Granted, this is somewhat different from selling gray market cameras, but
the loss of sales and profits is the same.

Um, no it's not, it would be similar if you could clone cameras. Grey
market import protection is in place simply to ensure that the local
  market can gouge local buyers.

It's not gouging, it's staying in business. The costs of successfully
running a business in one country or region can be substantially higher than
running it in another country. This is why outsourcing of jobs has become
such a major problem in recent years. A friend of mine whose job at Intel
was outsourced referred to it as job piracy. In a country like the US,
workers cost more, insurance and benefits cost more, rent costs more, etc.,
compared to some 2nd world country in southeast asia where gray market
retailers get much of their stuff from. Thus, retailers in the more
affluent regions have to charge more to stay in the black. The gray market
undercuts their ability to stay in business, which affects not only the
business itself but also its employees and the revenues and taxes it
generates for local and higher governments.

In other words, the gray market has an effect on entire industries and
 economies, not just local stores.

There's also the fact that different countries have different import taxes,
and some countries have sales taxes that others do not. A good example is
the VAT that some UK travellers wanted to avoid by buying their cameras from
me at my last job. There are reasons for these taxes to exist, the first
and foremost is to ensure your government (local and national) has the money
 to continue to function.

Unscrupulous dealers will do whatever they can to circumvent these costs,
and unscrupulous or ignorant buyers will seek them out. On a large scale,
this hurts the local and national economies and has been affecting the
camera industry in particular for a long time now. It's one of the major
reasons internet retailers have been successful at driving brick-and-mortar
 retailers out of business.

I'd like to see how you felt if you were running a legitimate business and
some jackoff came into town selling the same product, only at substantially
less because he got it through illegal channels. The worst part is, you
can't do anything to him because he's not located in a store: he's in a
roving van that can go wherever buyers want him, which means he doesn't have
the same costs you have associated with rent, insurance, employees, etc.
Your business does not gouge customers, and provides services the other guy
cannot or will not, but he's still successful because people don't realize
he's hurting their economy. Your store goes out of business and your
employees are now getting meager unemployment checks from the government
(who is now getting less tax revenue, by the way) because they can't find
work, all while the other guy keeps about his merry way taking more and more
bites out of the economy until it dries up and he moves along to find
 greener pastures to slash burn.

This is what the gray market is doing to the camera industry, leaving us
with fewer and fewer real, respectable camera stores.

I guess that's what you want, though. Enjoy!

Yes, try to escalate the issue. Sometimes asking over the phone for a
legal department rep works wonders.

They have zero upside incentive to cooperate with you, so do beat them
on the head and get them all the downside you can think of to make them
work with you.

And, yes, Pentax has everything to do with this. It is them who hired
the 3rd party.
I would be pissed too (I was pissed at BH when they sent me lenses with
utterly unremovable stickers covering UPC code on each box) .

Re: The JCO survey

2006-10-13 Thread Mishka
it's not a trivial matter. e.g. look at hasselblad. over the years its biggest
competitor has become hasselblad -- used gear. so there is some delicate
balance between a healthy secondary market that helps new sales and
a used market that kills business.

however, i think pentax had no reason to worry about lost lens sales since
their older glass caters to a completely different market segment. and at this
point they offer no product like this (fully mechanical, built like
tank, silky smooth
manual focus lenses).

therefore i think it was a dumb desision on their part to
ditch a feature that could bring them good PR and user loyalty, if nothing else.
i would be very surprised if they haven't realized this yet. i am willing to bet
that their professional body (whatever it will be) will have sTimulator.

I know I have no place in this thread but a thought occurred to me.

BTW, JCO just popped up all of a sudden lately after a long silence only to
be bashed :-), but to me, I remember him being a long time institution of
this list with a lot of old (read: classic) lenses. So, I have absolutely
 no bias toward him.

 But my question is this.
Is the used lens market also not helping the new lens sales? It is much
like a used car market. People have to sell or trade-in old cars to buy new
ones, and if the used ones won't sell and the world does not revolve, the
new car sales might suffer as well?

JCO's purchase of old classic lenses might be contributing to the new lens
 sales in a small way.

I can see his frustration of not being able to use his rather large stock of
lenses in new body etc, but it is also true that things progress.

 That's about where I stop.

for the last couple of weeks, there's been 150 successful auctions
for older lens over $50. that translates to about 4000/year. even if you
that meny of those buyers participated in multiple auctions, i think the figure
would still be of the order of a few thousands people/year. i also imagine that
not everyone is buying the lenses every year, so the numbers need to be summed
over a few years. all in all, i think 10K is a sensible rough
(pessimistic) estimate.

now, with monthly production rates of the order of 10-20K/months, that's
about 5..10% of annual sales (and with the digital lifespan, that may be 5-10%
of all sales). not a hell of a lot, but might be worth their while,
considering that
those sales will very likely be at premium prices.

doesn't do that well rendering fine detail.

However - and bear in mind that this is something I just use as a guide -
the amount of sharpening necessary to get a good web result was
consistently greater than with any of my other lenses. While i know that's
often dependent on subject and lighting, I was consistently using 80% plus
to get a good result with the 16-45, while with my other lenses, with the
exception of the K18/3.5, I usually sharpen at between 40% and 55%, and in
 some instances even less.

Deca- will precipitate fromf the solution. Septa- (7H2O) (not penta!)

Don't evaporate it. Just cool down the (warm, ~50C) solution in a

precipitate out in crystal form sodium sulfate decahydrate Na2SO4 .
 10H2O.

What proportion of water to sodium sulfate is required? Any specific
temperature the solution should start out at?

   Don't ask why. :-)

Thanks! I had sort of suspected that may be the case. Sodium Sulfate
apparently can combine with water to make a penta or a decahydrate. I
understand that the decahydrate form contains 10 parts H20 and the penta,
only 5, and was wondering why/when it would be in one form vs. the other.

What I'm hoping for in the end is crystals of a granular size. Is there a
way to speed up the evaporation?

 proportion doesn't matter -- Na2SO4 . 10H2O will form from the solution
 anyway.
just dissolve the anhydrous salt in a (minimal amount of ) hot water
 and put it in a
 fridge.

that definitely explains why every other car on the hiways is an
suv. i bet once gas prices get north of $5, the public transportation
will get to european level quite quickly.

We could move New Orleans in between Baltimore and NYC, I suppose.

very good point. add to that climate control, and that would add up
to quite a bit of maintanance.
imo, dvd/tapes backup is just that -- for disaster recovery.
it has to be done, yes, but it's kinda low priority (since true disasters
are kinda low probability events). since the hard drives
are dirt cheap right now, just having a few redundant copies (preferrably on
different computers) should be OK. check their health (automatically)
periodically,
and they'll live forever.

personaly, i am paranoid and i keep a copy of all stuff that matters
off-site (out of country), online. that way, even if NYC is nuked, i
will still have
pictures of sashkas's first birthday at hand (if i have any hands left
at that time).

there are things in live and photography other than resolution.
and attaching labels.
of course different lenses render differently. it's just that the
resolution is usually not among the differences, in 6MP cameras
at least.

one was taken with the 50mm/1.4.
