Valley of Fire is awesome. I hiked out to see the petroglyphs and came
back. It was about 110 deg. I burn easy so I had on a light long sleeve
shirt and hat but my face still looked like a lobster!

Mitch - thanks for looking & commenting.

As for the black backgrounds with the leaves - they were taken at the
crack of dawn with my back to the rising sun - I spotmetered the
brightest spots on the leaves, letting the background go dark. Same
for the ridgeline ('North Face of Denali'?) - in Photoshop I then made
sure the dark side became completely dark.

HTH.

And by the way, next time in Vegas you've got to take the time to
visit 'Valley of Fire' State Park about an hour or so north of the
city - in spots, its other worldly.

Well for one it doesn't have Kadak tripod hole locations & the

Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-29 Thread Mitch Conant
Ann:

Good choice on the DELL. I've used Dell for several business clients,
they all seem to be happy with them.

I too, use AVG and LOVE it. I put it on client PCs, use it on all 3 of
my workstations (Win 98SE, NT 4.0 and Win2000) as well as my Win2000
server and my Linux server. I have never had anything get through
(feverishly looking for wood to knock on). I think that as part of the
installation process on the Dell, you have the option of installing
Norton Anti-Virus. I wouldn't do it, I would get AVG from the link below.

Someone else in this thread mentioned a firewall. I have always used the
Linksys Firewall/Switch. The firewall is a BIG part of your security,
the Switch would allow you to connect the 2 computers (if you have an
ethernet port in the old computer - $10.00-$15.00) and share Internet,
Printers, Scanner, etc. Some people swear by the software firewall,
Iswear by the hardware. I do so because a software firewall is
suceptible to the same issues as other software (crashes, being unloaded
behind the scenes, not being loaded at startup, being hacked
(IMO)...etc...). See the link below.

Let me know if you need the Win98SE disk...

Have fun,
Mitch

Re: My New Webpage for PDML Submissions

2006-09-23 Thread Mitch Conant
Tim:

Thanks for the input comments.

You're the 2nd or 3rd one to mention the borders.I'm going to play
around with them to see how things look. At first I didn't it would look
right with light grey on medium grey, but I love it and it doesn't
detract from the photo content (I originally had the text as
red/scarlet). I also want to try re-arranging the data parts of each
picture in the gallery (index).

As the page grows larger??? H . I haven't decided the
details...yet. Possibly, by month. That would probably suffice for me.
Or... I could display the gallery page in chunks of 5-6 photos and then
recursively "call" the page with a different starting photo number. If I
used the month idea I would probably incorporate it as a column in the
SQL table so that I can do specific selects . I would then add a month
drop down select list on the top level PDML page. I'd have to think
about it...

I forgot to get rid of the link borders. You're right Title and Text
would be appropriate on the viewer page, and with the wonders of SQL...

Navigation controls are on the list. I would like to figure out a way to
figure out what the referring page was, dynamically. I can't find any
PHP variables (Globals, etc.) that would let me determine "from whenceI
came". I could store the HOST and PHP_SELF in session variables and grab
them, but for that to be effective every page that called the viewer
would have to know to set these variables. Why do this? I could then
have a generic go back nav control and go back to a PESO, GESO or PAW
gallery or any other page dynamically. I have the flexibility to call
the viewer or gallery page and request the photo(s) to display from any
page or email by sending a GET request with the appropriate variables
set. Ann sent me some comments and included a comment on one of the
photos. All she had to do was put in the comment and include a link with
the variables and she sent me back to my own photo using my viewer.
Kinda cool. I also do this with the gallery page. If I send a GET
request with the "urlphotos=photo1,photo2,...photoN" variable set, the
gallery will only contain those photos. Ah, the wonders of the
WHERE...IN... clause of the SELECT statement! You'll see it in the code,
I conditionally build the SELECT statement and let MySQL give me the
specific photos.

To add new photos right now, I create the thumbnail, web friendly and
full size photos and copy them to the web folder. I then add the entries
to the SQL tables (2). The PHP takes care of the pages. I like the fact
that I can transfer photos and the page doesn't see them until I add
them in SQL.

I might consider doing some Admin pages. I did the Admin pages for a
Jokes page that I was maintaining. I created forms to add text, picture,
audio and video jokes. As part of that process I did an upload page. I
also did some Admin pages for a local realtor that also included
functions that automatically created thumbnail and medium sized versions
of the photos that she uploaded. I might go pillage that code and do a
couple of Admin pages for this site.

I'll send the PHP code and MySQL "dump" info to your email. I don't want
to clutter the list...

Sorry this was so wordy,
Mitch

Ann:

You, Godfrey and Shel are right, the red was too much. I changed the
colors of the text to a very light grey and I like it much better. It
seems to distract less from the content and photos...

Thanks for the feedback on the load times...we are an impatient lot .

Welcome to the Broadband world! Once you're on high speed, you can never
go back!

I have not published any GESOs or PAWs, yet. I just published my first
PESO last week .

I'm going to Lowe's to look for some sort of brackets to mount a rod to
hang backdrops from. To get the picture of my Pentax equipment (for the
front PDML Photo page) I used push pins to tack the edge of the backdrop
ot the cornice moulding and then draped the backdrop over the ironing
board with the roll on the floor. It worked, but there has to be a
better way; for pennies .

Thanks and have a good weekend,
Mitch

Thanks for the input. The red on grey (especially the straight text) IS
terrible to read. This is the first go around, I was going to add some
CSS to help manage those things. The wife has to work this weekend, I
think I'll play around with that. The comment about r-g colorblind is
well taken.

Any thoughts on colors to go with the middle grey? In addition to the
colors, I'll play around with the borders on the Viewer page. I kinda
like the organization that they give to the Index page.

Hey, thanks for your ideas!

My New Webpage for PDML Submissions

2006-09-21 Thread Mitch Conant
PDMLers:

Yeah, I could've used a canned package, but where is the challenge in
that???

It was cloudy and rainy today, so I finished up a little project that I
was working on. Over the past 2 days I put together a quick series of
web pages that allow me to easily give people access to all of my PESOs
(and hopefully GESOs and possibly PAWs). I have a page to access all of
the photos and the same page allows me to cleanly present new PESOs to
list members.

I am on Broadband and sometimes lose sight of how things run over
dial-up. If you wouldn't mind taking a couple of minutes, please try the
following links out and give me some feedback on speed, I would
appreciate it. Everything is accomplished by server side scripting
(PHP), no JavaScript.

For those of you that like playing with things like this, I would be
glad to send you the HTML, PHP Code and MySQL Table layouts. It's the
least I could do in return for some feedback .

Thanks in advance,
Mitch

Re: OT - Xfer Vinyl to CD

2006-09-20 Thread Mitch Conant
Shel:

The way I have mine set up is this:

Turntable (with Magnetic Cartridge) into phono pre-amp ($25.00 from
RadioShack) See It Here

Pre-amp into Aux inputs on sound card via Right/Left RCA to stereo mini
plug ($5.00 from RadioShack). See It Here

Software that allows you to capture from the Aux jack (could be
turntable or cassette deck) I use Audio Cleaning Lab (Magix).

ACL allows me to burn directly to CD or break up into MP3 files. I
transfer more music so I will burn an image of the full album verbatim
and will also save individual songs as MP3s. The MP3 format allows me to
put the songs on a player or burn a disk of MP3 files to play in the car.

The reason you need a pre-amp for a turntable with a magnetic cartridge
is because the Aux input requires what is referred to as Line Level
input. The magnetic cartridge turntable puts out a higher quality lower
level signal.

Any software will probably have pre-built filters to cleanup
pops/crackles, rumble, etc. ACL was only like $29.00.

Let me know if you have any questions.

PESO - The Sentinel Reworked...

2006-09-18 Thread Mitch Conant
I reworked The Sentinel with some inspiration from Paul and 2 pints of
Oatmeal Stout . I cropped the subject a little tighter in this shot
(thanks for the suggestion Paul). I also increased the contrast slightly
(thanks Oatmeal Stout).

I like the results, especially getting that distracting greenery out of
the way, I wish I could've gotten it all.

Infared Techniques Questions...

2006-09-17 Thread Mitch Conant
I have seen other posts concerning IR photography and I seem to recall
some of us experimenting with it.

I was out playing around with my 72R IR filter yesterday afternoon. I
wasn't overly satisfied with my results. It was really windy, coupled
with long exposure times the leaves on the trees came out looking like
cotton, instead of leaves.

I seemed to notice the following patterns:

-- The results seem to be better if shooting in full (harsh) daylight.
Shooting in/into shadows can produce muddled results.

-- Tweaking the contrast in the final image seems to help.

-- A tripod is a must since you have to set up the shot (in the
viewfinder) without the filter, then put the filter on while being
careful not to move the camera. I'm also having to use 6-8 sec. exposure
times at f11.

-- There seems to be no way to setup the shot with the filter on...right?

Does anyone have any pointers on shooting IR photos??? I have an old
Presbyterian church that I want to shoot. The IR technique would produce
the "frosted" effect on the surrounding trees/grass, and make the sky
nice and dark (some nice white clouds would be a nice touch).

Thanks,
Mitch

PESO - My First Submissions ... Smaller Files

2006-09-17 Thread Mitch Conant
This post is for the members with slower dial-up lines. Sorry for your
frustrations with my big file sizes. I will be working on a web page
template that allows you to choose which format (large or small) you
would like to view. I will do it with all server side PHP, no JavaScript

Controlling file size is one of the lessons that I learned from my first

All file sizes are <= 200k and meet the 950 x 700 size recommendation.

PESO - 3 More Urban Landscapes

2006-09-17 Thread Mitch Conant
I spent a couple hours out after sundown last night.

These are the 3 that I like the best. All of them were shot with my DS.
The details common to all photos are:

Manual Mode
1600 ASA
JPG *** Mode
Converted to B/W (or Sepia) in camera

Please note that I have posted both the larger files (1024 x ???) and
smaller files (950 x ???); the file name suffixes are "-sm" and "-sm2"
respectively. I have also included the file sizes in the photo details.
I have also included some questions/comments for each photo.

After Hours <http://www.mme-ia.net/images/peso/2006/afterhours-sm.jpg>
597k, 35mm, f11, 1/4
After Hours <http://www.mme-ia.net/images/peso/2006/afterhours-sm2.jpg>
143k, 35mm, f11, 1/4
Comments: If you look in the shadowed are behind the dumpsters (on the
left) there is some noise in the image. The noise looks like the grain
produced when I would push 400 ASA B/W film to 800 or 1600 ASA. Is this
"noise" the same as the noise generated at 3200 ASA (as discussed on
this list)? I will probably reshoot this photo at 200 or 400 ASA to try
to get a sharp photo.

Memories of the 60's

<http://www.mme-ia.net/images/peso/2006/memoryof60s-sm2.jpg> 101k, 43mm,
f11, 0.7 sec
Comments: Smulekoff's is the oldest department store in Cedar Rapids,
IA. It is the only one that stayed downtown. It is a store like the ones
that I remember going to with my Grandmother in the 60's in Akron,
OH...an old building, an old style sign and real product displays in the
windows. That said, sepia toning seemed to lend an "antique" feeling to
the photo. This is the total opposite of the Wal-Marts and Target stores
of this century. There seems to be no or minimal "noise" in this shot.

Untitled <http://www.mme-ia.net/images/peso/2006/untitled-sm.jpg> 293k,
18mm, f11, 1/8
Untitled <http://www.mme-ia.net/images/peso/2006/untitled-sm2.jpg> 77k,
18mm, f11, 1/8
Comments: I'm at a loss for a title for this one; "Starway to
Somewhere...", I suppose. If you look at the full size version, you will
see some of the same noise as in the "After Hours" photo. I would have
liked this one to be sharp as well.

Thanks in advance for the input...

PESO: My First Submissions.

2006-09-14 Thread Mitch Conant
PDML List Members:

I hope that I did this right...

I have been admiring the work that everyone has been posting on this
list. It has been both entertaining and inspiring. I am only an amateur
(sp?), but I'll go ahead and post these for comments. They are uncropped
and unaltered and the composition was done in the viewfinder.

All images were made with an *ist DS with the original DA 18-55 lens ( I
have also been playing around with other lenses and equipment from my
ME/MX). All of these JPGs were made from the original 3008 x 2008 RAW

*ist DS / Ref Converter Questions...

2005-06-06 Thread Mitch Conant
Greetings:

Has anyone seen this particular Ref Converter?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=29968&item=752044
9926&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW#ebayphotohosting)

If so, do you know if it will fit on an ME/MX or an *ist DS? All we have
to go on is the eBay listing is the fact that it will fit a K1000, hence
the first question . If my memory serves me well (enough) I seem to
remember my K1000 viewfinder accessories fitting on my ME and MX.

Now for the logic (flawed as it may be)...

My viewfinder cover for the ME seems to fit on the DS, hence I'm
thinking that if the Ref Converter works on the ME/MX it stands a chance
of working on the DS.

The unknowns are do the optics and sight path on the Ref Converter line
up with the DS viewfinder correctly? What about any distortions in the
viewfinder (such as vignetting)?

Thanks,
Mitch
