Re: My experience: Vivitar 19mm

2004-01-27 Thread Ryan Charron
Hi Graywolf,

I don't want to argue with others here, but this is my
experience.
I owned a Vivitar 19mm f3.8 for years and was quite
happy with it, until I compared it to another lens. My
advice to you is: Don't buy it! It only sharpens up
stopped way down and even then, it's not that great
especially in the corners it really sucks.
It's a piece of garbage compared to the Russian
MC Mir-20M 20mm f/3.5 Lens.
When I first bought the MC Mir-20M, I could tell the
difference
on the NEGATIVE, between the two lenses. When I
magnified with Photoshop, I was absolutely Stunned at
the difference. So, I quickly sold my Vivitar.
I have since purchased a Pentax FA 20m f2.8 (I wanted
a k mount wide angle instead of a screw mount) and I
did some
comparison shots. I was surprised at how good the
Mir-20M was even compared to the Pentax. Just about as
sharp, almost as good even in the corners, flares more
though under certain circumstances because it's not as
well coated as the Pentax and it has a large glass
front. The Mir-20m is a lower contrast lens than the
Pentax, but it takes awesome photos.
Perhaps my Vivitar was a bad copy, but I don't think
so. Any lens can look good with web shots.
I took nice photos with the Vivitar and they looked
fine as I stated earlier. But once I saw the results
of a better (equally priced)lens, it was no longer
acceptable.

I have no idea about the MIR-47K 20mm f2.8, I never
used that lens.

Sincerely,
Ryan

Hello all Pentaxians,

Item for sale: Pentax Camera Data Back FD in Brand New
Perfect Condition !! It comes with the original Box,
Instruction Paper and the Battery... There is not even
one tiny scratch on this item, it's as new as when I
got it less than a year ago. Although it is the Data
Back designed for the PZ-1 / Z-1, I bought it for my
PZ-1p (that I just sold) and it works perfectly,
however, in Panorama mode the info is still in the
same position on the film since the PZ-1 /Z-1 cameras
do not have the Panorama mode. I never used Panorama
mode on my PZ-1p anyways and very few photographers
do.
ASKING: $75 US and $10 shipping to anywhere in the USA
or Canada.
PHOTOs available! Will e-mail upon request.

Hi Everyone,

I have the Tamron 90mm f2.8 AF macro and it looks
great even wide open. By the way it's almost as sharp
as the 77mm Pentax at f2.8 when magnified up with
Photoshop. But my Pentax A 50mm f1.7 is the sharpest
of all my lenses. It wins out over the 77mm slightly.
I would say those are my three sharpest lenses.
I'm surprised my Pentax A 50mm f1.7 is noticeably
better than my Pentax FA 50mm f1.4.

Guess what, TIFFs aren't as sharp as JPGs, but Raw
images win over JPGs.

I already ordered the *ist D from Adorama, body only.
No FAJ 18-35mm f5.6 for me.
Currently I don't have a zoom wider than my

Pentax FA 20mm f2.8 which will at least get me close

I will probably get the DA 16-45mm f4 when it is
released.
Eventually I will need a wider prime, perhaps the
Pentax 15mm A f3.5 or the Sigma 14mm f2.8.
I heard that Pentax will release an FA 14mm f2 in the

2.8? That would be crazy. Who needs f2 in that sort of
lens?

third place.
Favorite Zoom / Non-Pentax lens:
Tokina 28-80mm f2.8 ATX PRO. Folks I never cease to

at f2.8 and in my opinion it's the perfect normal zoom
range. It won't be a great focal range with the new

2003-06-10 Thread Ryan Charron
Hi Everyone,

I think I may have figured out Pentax logic behind the
FA-J lenses. I'm certainly not agreeing with it of
course.
OK as everybody knows the *ist D has a 1.5 x
magnification factor, so if you make FA-J lenses that
are specifically designed for it, they don't have to
be as sharp or as high quality optically around the
edges, especially when it comes to an 18mm zoom that
can save big bucks; Right? However nobody with an
MZ-S, MZ-3 or an LX will buy an inferior FA-J lens
without an aperture; Right? Pentax says that they will
still make lenses with an aperture for those cameras,
Right?
They also say that the FA-J's are entry level lenses
and the *ist is an entry level camera; Right?

Maybe there is a method to the madness; Right?
WRONG!!!

Re: The dreaded FA-J

2003-06-09 Thread Ryan Charron
Hi Pal and Everyone Else,

It only makes sense that Pentax will keep aperture
rings on most higher end future lenses. (I hope)
What MZ-S owner would want a lens that doesn't allow
him to use aperture priority or manual modes?
We need that aperture ring, unlike with the PZ-1p
where you can get by without it !!
I find the apertureless FA-J more disturbing than an
*ist that can't work pre KA lenses. Of course they
both go hand in hand I guess, kind of like Bonnie
Clyde.

As soon as I read a few good independant reviews, I
will buy the *ist.

A Fellow Pentaxian,
Ryan

I don't claim anything as I don't know. What I
claim is that I've been
told that Pentax have no plans to remove the aperture
ring from their
higher end lenses and that the FA-J and *ist's are
entry level products.
This has been said by Pentax engineers and until
similar credible
sources state otherwise, these are the lines my
opinions will follow. Of
course a might be told bullshit but I don't pretend to
know anything by
first hand knowledge but we can always speculate.
However, to my mind, since all worthwhile current
Pentax lenses have
aperture rings (close to 60 in number), I seriously
doubt that the function of the said ring will
dissapear anytime soon
unless they plane to discontinue all of them in the
next few months.
Of course they may stop K/M compatibility at a certain
point. Maybe
even now. They have to at some point. However, Pentax
have made a host of
great cameras that take those lenses, the latest the
MZ-S, and these
owners certainly had their fill. The fact that they
may not be able to
use them on a DSLR isn't the cathastrophe it is made
out to be.

I need some help here.
A screw must have gotten loose on my Super Program and
I lost it.
So I have a Super Program with a screw missing (MIA)
under the camera, right in the center of the winder
advance control area. (where my MEII winder fits in to
advance the film)
Without it, light gets to the film when I'm not using
my winder.
I found a screw that fits but the head is too large
and my winder won't work with it there.

Does anyone have a Super Program hanging around for
parts? I'll pay you for it. How about $5 US for a
tiny screw?

Sincerely,
Ryan

Re: Re: Way OT: GUNS, GUNS, AND MORE GUN

2002-12-06 Thread Ryan Charron

Hello to Anyone Interested,

If you aren't, just move along to the next thread.

I'm an American and Canadian citizen very glad to be
living here in Toronto, the crime rate is still WAY
lower than the USA. Recently in gang related violence
in LA, the cops were OUT Gunned ! Here in Canada the
gun laws go a bit overboard I agree, but at least here
in Canada it's not like Texas and many other states
where any and everyone can have a concealed weapon on
their person. To me that's a scarey situation
especially in the Southern states where tempers can
flare very easily. I KNOW, I LIVED THERE! ( N.C. S.C.
 FLORIDA )

Picture this (not literally), it happens often: There
is a Committee meeting is in session in some State
legislature and they are debating legislation allowing
everyone to carry concealed weapons. Some legislators
are strongly in favor, saying that it will make the
population safer, yet they also are Very much in favor
of the metal detectors that make sure no one enters
the committee chambers with a concealed weapon,
because it makes them feel safer.
Is there a disconnect there?

Sorry for the Off Topic Comments,
Ryan

Re: Tokina 150-500 f5.6 ATX

2002-05-14 Thread Ryan Charron

Hello To All,

Here are my thoughts on my new lens. Of course it's
built like a tank which is normal for Tokina 's ATX
line. I was surprised that it has a built in lens
hood!
Very Nice indeed.
I finally got a chance to do some testing of it's
optical performance. I would say that wide open at
500mm, it's not as sharp as my Tokina 100-300 f4 ATX
lens at 300mm f4, but if you stop it down to f8 it's
alot better and f11 is very sharp.
So, I'm quite pleased with it and it's not as heavy as
I expected it to be. It's ONLY 4.8 pounds, that's all.
But seriously, it balances quite well with my PZ1p.
It's one of the largest/longest telephoto zooms you
can still handhold with faster films. So, bottom line,
I'm quite happy with it, It's no Pentax 600mm 5.6, but
then again, I didn't empty all the bank accounts
either to buy it.

Ryan

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about
a good, sub-20mm ultra-wide for Pentax. I only have
the luxury of surfing on weekends, hence the belated
reply. This week's discussions on favorite WA's and
true focal length were quite informative
(provocative?)

#1)I was inspired to save up and hold out (look
harder?) for a Pentax K18/3.5 until I learned its true
focal length of 19mm. That seems so close to 20mm,
that I might as well just get the A20/2.8 which is
[somewhat] cheaper, easier to find, and faster (but
not as wide as I wanted). Does anybody know if the
A20/2.8 is ~truly~ 20mm,... or is it 21mm or 22mmish?
Can it take the Cokin P system without vignetting?

RE: OT: Canadian customs information re broken gear

2002-04-24 Thread Ryan Charron

Hi Wendy,

Well, guess what?
About 6 months ago, I sold my Nikon Coolscan III to
someone in the US from here in Canada and when it got
to him, he said it wasn't working. I forgot to place a
shipping screw in the area you place the film / slide
holder, although the other shipping screw was in
place.
Turns out after a little checking up on my part, that
it was absolutely true and Nikon charged him over $300
to repair it and guess who was stuck with most of the
bill? Me, myself and I.
My replacement scanner was the Polaroid Sprintscan
4000.
No shipping screws are even needed with it.

The moral of the story is that Nikon Scanners Are Very
Delicate. I'm not so sure the missing shipping screw
did it, it was packed so well.
So, Beware of Shipping Nikon Scanners or even bumping
them too hard for that matter.

I don't think Canada or US Customs was the problem,
unless they have a practice of giving boxes that say
Fragile a nice Big Kick.

  Hi Guys,

  I have a problem. I sold my Polaroid SS4000 to a
Canadian guy, it
took
ages to
reach him, it was apparently stuck in customs. It
left me working
perfectly and
in pristine condition. It now doesn't appear to
work, however there
was no
signs of overly rough handling on the box (it was
double boxed which
made it a
huge package overall) and there seems to be nothing
rattling inside.
It
has a
cold cathode tube (no filament AFAIK) for
illumination which usually
powers up
when the on button is depressed, now nothing
however the scanner is
visible on
  the SCSI bus and controllable.

It seems to me like customs may have had a peek
inside to see if I
was
shipping
more than a scanner? Does anyone know if they are
in the habit of
doing
this as
I just can't think of any other reason that it
would stop working
like
this?

  Any suggestions?

  Cheers,

choices you've got are the Pentax FA 28-70 f4 or if $
is no issue the Pentax FA 28-70 f2.8. But for the

For me, f4 is too slow for any lens under 200 or

I believe it's the Best manual focus 200mm zoom ever
made for Pentax. Now it's for sale on Ebay.

 Does anyone disagree?

I don't know if it is the best ever, but I wouldn't
sell mine.

Hi Ciao,

I am only selling it because I bought this AF 200mm
lens.

Sure a one touch manual zoom lens has it's advantages,
but I wanted AF.

RE: 77mm 1.8 vs 85 mm f1.4

2002-03-07 Thread Ryan Charron

Hi to All,

OK, so I am going to finally buy a great portrait
lens.
I still have not firmly decided which of the two to go
for, although I am leaning towards the 85mm for it's
faster speed and focal length. What are the reasons
why I should even consider the 77mm 1.8; it seems a
bit overpriced. Is it built better? Is it sharper?

Thanks,
Ryan

Hello to All,

Do they make an adapter to fit a 39mm screw mount lens
onto a Pentax camera?

Re: ZX5n focusing screen

2002-02-12 Thread Ryan Charron

Hello to All,

I recently purchased my first autofocus camera, having
decided to eventually end up with two autofocus
bodies, the ZX5n and the MZ-S. I kept my ZX5n for only
3 months because of the focusing screen. I could not
live with a focusing screen that was only clear in the
center portion and never clear all around the edges.
Only about 1/3 of the screen's center is usable for
manual focusing! So now I bought the PZ1p and I love
it !!! The screen is so much better and now I can't
live without the Hyper Program Mode.
I want to eventually get the MZ-S as well, however
when I have the money for it, I might get the 77mm
limited instead, since I don't have an unlimited
amount of $ to spend on camera stuff and I feel lenses
are more important than camera bodies in Photography.

Re: Portrait Lenses

2002-02-08 Thread Ryan Charron

Hello Wendy,

You are right in a way, however there are times when
you want Sharp Portraits. Just look in a few major
magazines (No not tabloids or rag mags) and you will
find all kinds of Sharp Portraits. Some way too sharp
by the way. (How about Bush, Colin Powell and others
in Vanity Fair Magazine's War Cabinet Issue
recently?OUCH, WAY TOO CLOSE and SHARP)
But I like to always start out too sharp and Photoshop
my way down to a comfortable softness. (so to speak)
Once you have a soft image on film, you can't really
sharpen it up and I personally love sharp detailed
eyes in a Portrait.

Subject: Portrait lenses

A couple of days ago there was a thread about portrait
lenses and macro
lenses of roughly the same focal length (around
100mm). Excuse me
waffling,
but it's late.
Anyway, I would just like to iterate, if anyone is
thinking of going
into
portraiture, then don't use a lens that is TOO SHARP!

RE: Rechargeable (2CR5) for PZ-1p

2001-12-19 Thread Ryan Charron

Hello to All,

My brother has been in electronics for over 25 years
and he told me there is No Way that a rechargable
could damage a camera motor. Rechargables always have
a little less voltage than the regular batteries they
replace. (1.25 volts to 1.5 volts for instance)
To settle the issue, I have been using rechargables in
my AA holder on my ZX5n and have had No Problems.

A Rechargable Fan,
Ryan
