AND there was the opportunity to sell off my Leica gear and buy into a Hassy Superwide and 500C/M setup, something I'd always wanted to try. Re: No discussion of the Olympus OM-D ?
Agreed. I like my old cameras because the controls worked so well. The presence of automatic modes makes these controls an afterthought, and this becomes clear when you use the camera. Most shots work fine on auto but that actually makes it worse. You don't' use the manual controls as often, and when needed it's hard to react quickly. On Tue, Jan 24, 2012 at 1:29 PM, P. J. Alling webstertwenty...@gmail.com wrote: For me the styling is unimportant. Retro that works is controls and ergonomics. I have friends who have OM systems, and they are a bit disappointed that Olympus didn't make as much effort as Pentax did to keep their old lenses compatible. Most have moved on to low to mid level Canons... Using my existing lens kit is much more important than what the camera looks like. Right now I have a system that can use every single bit of legacy gl\ass I own. If you want retro for retro sake, look at the Epson RD-1, now that's retro, even more so than the Leica M-9. I then exported to my iBooks app, and it ran smooth as punch on my iPad. Totally amazing. While you are designing and laying out your book, you can preview your on going work and any of the multimedia widgets with the iPad when it's hooked up to your computer. It seems to me the reason to use this app is for its amazing widgets, and if you're going to use them, then you'd need to feel fairly certain that the majority of your readers would have the device capability to enjoy your interactive book to the fullest. I have no idea how an interactive book produced with this app would run on, say, a Kindle or Nook device. It runs great on the iPad, and I suspect that was the main intent, and if your book is only going to run great on an iPad, well then any mass distribution goals might have to be reconsidered. I shot with the DA 16-45mm on the k-5 the other day, and I got the feeling it wasn't focusing right on the k-5. Then I got to thinking that I really need a weather resistant wide angle zoom, which the DA 16-45mm isn't. But I'm a bit out of luck there because I can't stand the way the 16-50mm DA* ejaculates ; it's so vulgar, though I do recognize it takes nice pictures. These guys always insist on capture images. Both media always involve some PP, minimally the JPEG engine or photolab's chemical development. For absolute quality comparison you should allow both files to be optimized in LR. The problem with all of these comparisons is that they are typically being done by someone defending the honor of film and inevitably bias the test in small ways toward film's advantages. Re: Fuji X Pro 1 (X100 + interchangeable lenses)
If you look at the K5/X Pro 1 size comparison from the non-grip side, the body has a similar thickness. The grip and prism bump make up the size difference and probably part of the weight. It's pretty clear that Fuji is going after the M9 in that they want those who can't afford to the M9 to think of this as a good alternative. I think you've zoned in on the biggest problem, however, Frank, which is the slower AF. I've had some luck with the X-10 on moving targets (people) but my personal skill for street work is not sufficient to make a real evaluation. Apparently it's better than the x100 but nowhere near dslr capability. Fuji acknowledges that but says fast focusing is not what that camera is about. As for the X Pro, I'll need to see some output to see if it provides any real advantage over smaller SLRs like the K5 (or it replacement). This will frustrate some, but the price tag is a real hurdle for the Q. A less well built one, i.e., polycarbonate, might bring it into a range where it can compete with the the other high end compacts like the Canon G12. Re: Fuji X Pro 1 (X100 + interchangeable lenses)
It's very useful to have and eye level finder for long lenses and MF. In the context of this thread, however, that VF doesn't need to be optical. The X Pro can switch back and forth between the two, but I wonder how necessary that really is if the EVF is fairly high res. Re: Ashley Pomeroy opinion piece to end the year on dpreview.com
It's a fun read. Snarky, but universally so, even regarding her own writing style. Some great lines and some sad truths. The last few lines are the best, however. Let's drop the word digital form all photography references because it has long been the default case. As for her thoughts on photography, they are painfully descriptive of my own experience. I went to micro43 for a while because I so liked the E-P1. Unfortunately, Olympus doesn't make it's own sensors and you need the best stuff to compete with APS-C. I'm also tired of RAW, or, more precisely, working with RAW. I love to adjust a single picture but I hate the mass work flow. I'm always told that Lightroom is great once you get used to it, but to me that's a also a good description for a prosthetic limb. I've given it up, and will now use the latest version of Photoshop Elements until Adobe goes out of business. In truth, I've fallen into what I call the Disneyland paradox. Most of my best photo opportunities occur at the worst places/times to tote around an SLR and a bunch of lenses. I would have loved the Q with a built-in fast zoom but I'm hoping the X-10 fulfills that niche. Since most of my photography now lives on the web and I never make prints, it should be fine. I'll keep the K7 and the FA135 for those times when I can devote the trip to photography, like a trip to the racetrack or a national park. Rant over.
