Re: Cool architectural photography. Pentax 67, I think.

2016-02-22 Thread knarf
Cool photos, but brutalist architecture has got to be the ugliest crime
perpetrated by architecture against cities in the 20th Century.

Toronto was in the midst of a huge boom during the late sixties through to the
end of the seventies, the heyday of brutalism. Grey concrete abounds in this
city and it's monstrous, heavy, grey and imposing. I hate it:

But thanks for the link. Wonderful photos despite buttons it pushes. :-)

Thanks, Paul, Rick, Ann and everyone else who threw in their 2 cents.

I still don't know which I prefer. I was thinking in colour when I took it but
I have to say the B worked way better than I expected. It is (as I think
Bruce said) a bit menacing where the colour is a bit whimsical.

To me it's like they're two different photos. No preference, I think they each
have something to say.

Thanks all for your input; it has been most valuable.

Re: PESO - Stage Door

Thanks Mark. I think you caught what I was going for.

I actually was initially attracted by the door and posters, only as I was
framing that shot in the viewfinder did I notice the (apparently) homeless
person on the right. It was pretty dark in that corner and I considered dodging
it a bit to make him more obvious, then I decided that hiding in a dark corner
was more appropriate to the situation.

Thanks again.

PESO - New Year, New Hope

2016-01-01 Thread knarf
I took this last weekend down by the lake. It was sunset but I was looking
southeast; the clouds caught a tinge of the sun.

As I looked at it this morning I thought, simple as it is, it says something
about the hope of this day:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2015/12/early-winter.html?m=0

Happy New Year. May you have happiness and peace in 2016. May the world see
happiness and peace in 2016.

That's a beautiful photo, Paul. I'm sure you must have such bittersweet
feelings this, her first birthday since she left.

Memories of joy and beauty and happiness, mixed with anger, loss and grief.

I'm glad you have a few photos and I feel honoured that you shared this one
with us. She was beautiful, and from what you told us over the years, a
beautiful human being.

I wish you peace,

Re: OT Wet Christmas

2015-12-29 Thread knarf
Well, Dan, believe it or not, I agree with pretty much everything you just
said! :-)

It's been some time since the term "climate change" replaced "global warming".

I don't know if the world is, on average, warmer or not, but what's irrefutable
is:

"The Arctic region is warmer than it used to be and it continues to get warmer.
Over the past 30 years, it has warmed more than any other region on earth."

https://nsidc.org/cryosphere/arctic-meteorology/climate_change.html

Human activity seems to be a contributor to at least some of that change. It
just seems prudent to do what we can to alleviate this before it's too late.

 Cheers,

frank

Re: PESO: Emulating Knarf

I think you're holding that camera too steadily, Mark. Don't squeeze the
shutter release, stab at it. Quick, short motions are best. That way you get
tilt, motion blur and out of focus all at the same time.

It'll come with no practice whatsoever. In fact practice is discouraged.

Nice effort all the same.

And seriously, I love it! I wish I'd have taken it. :-)

This has been the mildest December on record, and even if we have a deep freeze

But tonight we're (finally) getting our first taste of winter:

It was freezing rain, then snow, now ice pellets. The photo doesn't show the

A warm front is coming in tomorrow and by the afternoon this will all be a

Taken with the phone cam whilst taking out the trash. Hope you enjoy. Comments

Don't worry. It's got nothing to do with Global Warming. Sorry, we don't use

Climate Change: It's got nothing to do with Climate Change, which is doesn't

Now I know it's really Christmas morning!

And like everyone else I first scroll down and see how many of mine are in
there. Then I sloowly scroll up, reading each one.

A vintage year. Bob W. was in fine form this year, but honestly you could do an
entire page of Bob quotes and still miss some good ones. In fact, just to give
the rest of us a chance, I suggest you do that moving forward (oh how I hate
that phrase - "moving forward" - eeew!): A Bob W. page and a page for the rest
of us.

Fair is fair.

And in all seriousness, thanks Mark, for another year of great quotes. Next
year starts right now! LOL!
