Pen F + Tokina 90/2.5
Minimal crop, slight levels adjust, slight saturation increase.

I am re-assessing my lens requirements. Boris is absolutely right in
that the Voigtlander Heliar 15/4.5 is far too slow to be a useful
general purpose lens (one to you Boris!) and I think I might sell it.
Thing is, it is a lovely landscape wide angle on APS-C and so I might
just hang onto it in case...

I've snagged an M50/1.4 off eekbay for 60 quid, waiting for that to
arrive. Portrait lens on a half-frame sensor.

When I had Pentax film cameras, I never got into 50mm lenses, finding
the angle of view neither here nor there. I had a 28mm which I loved,
and the other way you were into telephoto territory. Now, with my Pentax
24/2.8 on a half-frame sensor, it gives an image like a 50mm, and am
actually enjoying it.

So the question is, do I replace the 15/4 with something like the Oly
17/2.8? It's pricey, and actually I have always favoured a wider angle
as a general purpose lens. So I might consider the Oly 12/2 (which gives
an angle of view like a 24mm lens on a full-frame camera). But although
it has manual focus override, it's still an electronic lens with no
aperture ring.

Then I came across some reviews for the Samyang 12mm f/2 which point to
a good value for money lens. It's about 250 GBP which is a lot cheaper
than the Voigtlander 10.5mm f/.95 at 900 GBP!! The angle of view on half-
frame means it will act like a 24mm lens - ideal for my idea of a
'general purpose' lens. That is, a lens that I would normally default
to, leaving it on the camera as it is picked up to be used.

I'm seriously tempted by the Samyang. I'm building up a kit that relies
on manual focus and manual aperture. This requires forethought in
setting up for photographing, a good challenge for me! The picture of
the pigeon would be so easy to get with an auto-everything cam/lens
combo, and when I used to have EOS 1D gear with IS lenses and machine-
gun capability I did all that, and it was fun, but now.

The satisfaction of achieving a similar photograph with a simple and
basic setup (not even a zoom lens) is high. I felt like I'd actually
used skill and judgement in getting a decent image [of the pigeon] and
so in a way the photo is almost a 'reward' for effort. I find this much
more satisfying as I get a little older now.

My son thinks I'm barking mad. But hey.

that I had never seen one that would even come close.

Surly offers the Pugsley. The complete bike
http://surlybikes.com/bikes/pugsley_complete/ retails for about $1500.
Frame sets are around 5 or 600. Their sister company, Salsa, has the
Mukluk. http://salsacycles.com/bikes/mukluk/ Salsa bikes are
typically a few bucks more than the Surly counterpart.

A neighbor of mine has been doing some contract work in Sydney,
Australia and has spotted two different Pugsleys there. I have yet to
see one in the wild.

I Googled +"fat cat" v +"big ass" and got mostly images similar to

because I have filtering set to "off" in Google search preferences, I
got a selection of results that were definitely NSFW.

Thanks to all who replied. It's a Maxtor disk, and the Mac version of

After quitting one-touch I was able to reformat it.

Won't erase it? That's odd. Unless the drive is somehow write-
protected the Disk Utility will happily reformat *any* mountable
volume you present it with. Make sure you select the drive itself
and not one of its existing volumes when you try to select Erase.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the type, and don't bother
with Erase Free Space or the security options.

Assuming a disk utility fail you could use a linux boot tool to get rid
of the fat partition. Parted Magic is less than 100mb, and does a fine
job out of a pendrive (SD cards too).

You could have a damaged disk - I had some issues with a 500gb MyBook,
earlier this year.

Won't erase it? That's odd. Unless the drive is somehow write-protected
the Disk Utility will happily reformat *any* mountable volume you
present it with. Make sure you select the drive itself and not one of
its existing volumes when you try to select Erase. Select Mac OS
Extended (Journaled) as the type, and don't bother with Erase Free Space
or the security options.

I picked up a 500 gig Maxtor drive for next to nothing. I hooked it up
to my IMac 24, and system 10.5 recognizes it, and I can access the
files that are on it. But I want to erase it. It's formated with MSDOS
FAT, and the Mac disk utility won't erase it. What do I need to
reformat it to Mac Extended?

You're too kind - I wasn't trying! Trouble is, when I'm trying, I'm
annoying, cos then I'm leaping about and in your face - albeit for only
one number, but it can be frustrating. Only tend to do that at
rehearsals though - most musicians (quite rightly) put the punter first
and don't want lunatics obstructing the audience's view.

We could maybe talk about doing you a video though.

Well done Cotty - and thanks again.

My favorite "concerts" are played in smallish pubs and bars by
musicians crammed together on tiny stages. When one is 10 feet from
the musicians you can "feel" the music in a way that just doesn't
happen in a larger venue. When I was a kid I went to rock concerts at
stadia of various sizes - I think 70,000 at Rich Stadium in Buffalo to
see Yes was the largest I went to - and from the 50 yard line at
ground level the stage looked like a postage stamp.

Sure the music was loud (my ears rang for days afterwards) but there
wasn't a whiff of emotion to be felt - mind you it ~was~ Yes, so there
wasn't a lot of emotion to be felt from the outset.

A rather pleasant side-effect of my changing musical tastes has been
that much of what I like (jazz, blues, folk, a bit of indy-rock, small
chambre orchestras) is played by smallish combos playing in intimate
spaces.

You've captured that intimacy and emotion so well! That's why I liked
your photos.

cheers,
frank

Interesting. It's the first time I shot with it like that, and it
reminds me of loading up some HP4 (sic) as a student, and then pushing
the hell out of it at a gig in a Spottie and trying to soup it so it
printed something even slightly viewable. But when you're a student, and
you get big grainy blurry hell, your student mates looked at it and said
wow that's cool. And it was.

Do it today and they talk about d-max and banding. Times change
