Yeah, an email went out to the NPW team members a couple of days ago.
We'd all been expecting it.

I'm hoping things are settled enough for the Camera Clinic weekend to
run in August.

Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend 2020 CANCELLED

2020-04-01 Thread John

I got an email from them this morning. Tickets usually go on sale April 1.

Dear friends,

Regrettably, due to safety concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19 (novel
coronavirus), Grandfather Mountain has canceled the 2020 Nature Photography
Weekend, previously scheduled for May 29-31.

This was not an easy decision to reach, but we feel it's a responsible one,
as the safety of our guests and staff comes first and foremost.

Grandfather Mountain voluntarily closed March 15, following suit with
executive orders from N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper (https://governor.nc.gov/) , the
latest of which directs North Carolinians to shelter at home
(https://files.nc.gov/governor/documents/files/EO121-Stay-at-Home-Order-3.pdf)
for 30 days, March 30 to April 29.

During the temporary closure, the park will maintain a minimal level of
essential staffing on site, including animal habitat keepers, maintenance and
security, while strictly adhering to guidelines and recommendations from
Centers for Disease Control (https://www.cdc.gov/) , the N.C. Department of
Health and Human Services (https://www.ncdhhs.gov/) and local officials
(https://www.apphealthcare.com/) .

As of now, the 2020 Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic
(https://grandfather.com/event/grandfather-mountain-camera-clinic-2020) is
still scheduled for Aug. 15-16, while staff works on alternative methods of
providing a Nature Photography Weekend experience to our NPW family. Keep an
eye on your inbox and www.grandfather.com (https://grandfather.com/) for news
and updates.

Thanks for your patience, support and understanding. In the meantime, we hope
you and yours are doing well and keeping safe. We look forward to seeing you
all back on the mountain in the near future.

Sincerely,
Frank Ruggiero Director of Marketing & Communications Grandfather

Mountain Stewardship Foundation

It's a shame, because I really look forward to seeing some of y'all when I get
there (actually, I look forward to seeing ALL y'all, but only some of you come
to the Grandfather Mountain NPW).

Brain malfunction.

I had an early doctors appointment on Monday & scrambling around to get ready so
I'd get there on time, I completely forgot about Grandfather Mountain Nature

Had an "Oh Shit!" moment just now when I finally remembered it.

Fortunately for me, it hadn't sold out yet, so I was still able to register.

Hope I'll see other PDMLers there.

Unfortunately, my alternative (Earthlink) is also being screwed up by
spammers right now. Several of the IP addresses for their mail servers
keep getting blacklisted by the SPAM catching service the PDML Server
uses. If my post to PDML catches one of those IP addresses it gets
bounced by the PDML server.

Finding anyone at Earthlink to address the problem is almost as
difficult as finding someone at Yahoo.

... and y'all should remember all the aggravation Time-Warner &
Roadrunner email gave me (and AnnSan).

Re: Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend

2014-04-01 Thread John

Well, just so you know ... my experience when it did happen last year,
they corrected it RIGHT AWAY.

Everybody makes mistakes now and then, the telling is in how they handle
them. They handled theirs well.

On 4/1/2014 9:14 AM, Stanley Halpin wrote:

Whatever the reason, this time it worked. I’ve only received 3 emails
so far, a Purchase Confirmation, a Registration Confirmation, and an
Order Invoice. As far as I can tell, they all relate to the same
purchase - i.e. I won’t have multiple charges.

it's actually working.

If they're not going to have someone around to fix the inevitable
problems when it goes live at midnight, I don't understand why
they don't set it up to go live at 8:00 am when there's someone
going to be there.

It appears to be fixed now. I was able to place my order this
morning. I've gotten 5 emails from Grandfather Mountain since I
successfully registered 15 minutes ago, TWO of them being
confirmations that I'm registered.

I will be checking my statements closely to be sure that doesn't
mean I'm going to be charged for the failed attempts last night.

I got charged twice last year, but I sent Landis an email & she had
it fixed within 24 hours.

Re: Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend

2014-04-01 Thread John

I dunno. I've had problems with the on-line registration EVERY TIME
since they went over to using it. At one point I got the grayed out
screen & spinning whatever-it-is too. The server goes live at midnight,
but there's no one monitoring it to make sure it's actually working.

If they're not going to have someone around to fix the inevitable
problems when it goes live at midnight, I don't understand why they
don't set it up to go live at 8:00 am when there's someone going to be
there.

It appears to be fixed now. I was able to place my order this morning.
I've gotten 5 emails from Grandfather Mountain since I successfully
registered 15 minutes ago, TWO of them being confirmations that I'm
registered.

I will be checking my statements closely to be sure that doesn't mean
I'm going to be charged for the failed attempts last night.

I got charged twice last year, but I sent Landis an email & she had it
fixed within 24 hours.

I know know Mark said that registration starts in the morning, but
the site clearly says it is open at midnight and all the links are

I think you broke it John. I got as far as the Place Order button. After that
(for an hour now) I just get a greyed out screen and a spinning boomerang or
whatever. I tried closing the window, coming back into the site. When I tried

Re: Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend

2014-03-31 Thread John

There shouldn't be any shipping involved.

You register & then you show up at the tent down by McCrae Meadows at
3:00pm on Friday May 30, to check in and pick up your packet.

I have had trouble with the online registration every year since they
went to it. The first couple of years I went, they still had the
telephone registration by the 800 number & you just started calling at
midnight EDT and kept redialing until you got through.

I sent 'em an email & I left a voice mail. I'm going to bed & I'll call
'em again first thing in the morning.

Here's the page:
http://www.grandfather.com/planning_your_visit/events/nphoto.php

Last year they didn't get the sign-up functioning until mid-day on April
1, as I recall but it sold out by the end of the day. Who knows how
current economic conditions will slow things down this year. But it's
very inexpensive, as photo workshops go, and there are still only 165
spots available.

That's the page I've been monitoring.

There's an 800 number listed on the calendar of events page, so I might
try registering by phone as well.

I have to be at work by 1:00 on Wednesdays, and have no internet access
there I could use to try to register if the on-line registration is not
up in time for me to get to it.

Yes it was Mark, all sold out by mid day.

John mu suggestion would be to sleep during the day, and then hit the
web site at midnight.

May be the only way.:-)

On a side note, looks like i'll be missing it again this year. If i
finally make up my mind about this years horse shows, to do them or
not, I may try for the PJ weekend.

It used to take 3-4 days to fill up. Maybe now it is quicker. It's on the
