Using a MF lens solved the AF speed problem.

That's the solution I've used on every autofocus Pentax SLR.

Set the camera up so it IS absolutely level (Duct tape a meter long
level to it's base) then note the cameras level reading, say one pixel
one way or another, and always set it there.

As an aside (see, there's another) I now know that it is critical to
make sure your tripod head is absolutely level if you are going to be
panning a wide angle lens (DA*16-50 @ 16) more than 10 degrees.
Rolling re-positioning of the camera makes one dizzy when viewing!

I have thought about getting a K7 but am waiting to see if they come

this combination that I really started to improve my skills.  Though, I have

I share your sentiment for a certain part, Christine. K7 is a fine
camera. As a matter of shameless plug I am offering you this entry in my
blog: http://pentax-ways.blogspot.com/2010/02/power-of-habit.html

I should also say that despite having a number of advantages over K10D
and up to date being the most advanced DSLR Pentax ever produced, I
still think that older cameras, such as K20D or K10D (one that Galia is
using as well) are very fine photographic tools.

As for stealthiness, well, yes K7 is pretty stealthy, up to the
limitations of sound produced by screwdriver AF motor and quiet but not
entirely silent mirror slap. (I hope I am using the words 'quiet' and
'silent' in proper order here :-) ) This was to a certain extent
demonstrated by Chris in Chicago during that exhibition...

Boris

P.S. Unless new camera is really a full frame one, which is quite
unlikely, I don't think that I personally would be very much interested
in upgrading my K7. I cannot afford buying a camera more expensive than
USD 1000 every year.

I share your sentiment for a certain part, Christine. K7 is
a fine camera. As a matter of shameless plug I am offering
you this entry in my blog:
 http://pentax-ways.blogspot.com/2010/02/power-of-habit.html

I should also say that despite having a number of
advantages over K10D and up to date being the most advanced
DSLR Pentax ever produced, I still think that older cameras,
such as K20D or K10D (one that Galia is using as well) are
 very fine photographic tools.

As for stealthiness, well, yes K7 is pretty stealthy, up to
the limitations of sound produced by screwdriver AF motor
and quiet but not entirely silent mirror slap. (I hope I am
using the words 'quiet' and 'silent' in proper order here
:-) ) This was to a certain extent demonstrated by Chris in
 Chicago during that exhibition...

P.S. Unless new camera is really a full frame one, which is
quite unlikely, I don't think that I personally would be
very much interested in upgrading my K7. I cannot afford
buying a camera more expensive than USD 1000 every year.

Re: I think I'll keep the k7 :-)

2010-08-16 Thread P N Stenquist
I'll probably get a K5, since my K7 now has well over 20,000 exposures
on the clock. That's been my pattern: sell the backup camera (K20) and
retire my main camera to a backup role when the new model is released.
Considering the return on selling the used equipment and the tax
deduction that comes with the purchase of new equipment, this strategy
seems to make financial sense. And the new camera has always proved a
plus in terms of on the job strengths. I expect the same again.

I suspect the K-5's going to be pretty much the K-7 with a new sensor
and maybe a couple extra fps (the Sony 14.6MP CMOS sensor and the
rumoured 16MP CMOS sensor are both capable of 7+fps and are the likely
candidates for the K-5's sensor). Might even see a 1/250 flash sync if
we also get the extra fps. Aside from that probably incremental
improvements to the video function and LV implementation and hopefully
a flip/twist LCD (I really miss that from the G1 and E-30)

Even with that, I'm expecting it to be a nice upgrade. K-x or better
high ISO, resolution at least as good as the K-7 and all the
improvements to the non-imaging parts the K-7 already got.

Well, Adam, you paint a rosy picture here, which I hope happens :-)
Cheers,

Christine

Heh, I was trying for the minimalist approach. The new sensor is a
given, but I'm not sure which of the two we'll see. Probably the 16MP
one as that's what Nikon and Sony are reportedly both using in their
newer high-end APS-C bodies which should get announced in the next
month or so. Pentax has been improving the Video and Live View
implementations with each update so I expect we'll see that as a given
as well (It'll just be software anyways).

The extra fps and better shutter is a guess, but the capability's
there and it differentiates the K-5 from the slower K-x (and rumoured
K-r) better than the current 0.5fps difference does today. The flash
sync is built on that, all of the 7fps-capable shutters are also
capable of 1250th sync (the Sony's don't get it as their IS
implementation limits the physical sync to 1/200 and they don't give
the sync boost with IS off on the current A450/A550 but do on the
A850/A900). If Pentax has this limitation as well it could explain the
K-7's od lower flash sync (odd given the 1/8000 max shutter speed).

The flip/twist LCD is just me hoping. I love the feature but it's not
available on the bodies I would be interested in.

I've tested the video, and it's fun. I aim to create some practice projects
suited to the video features. Cheers, Christine

If I had one knock against my K-x, it's that you WILL be noticed.
After cutting my teeth on a used Olympus E20-n, which I often had to
look at the disk-write indicator light to make sure I'd even taken the
shot, I couldn't believe the shutter noise on my Pentax. One benefit of
it, though, is that it does tend to startle birds, which makes for good
take-off shots on occasion -- when I remember to hold down the shutter
release in drive mode and pan, that is. I usually don't.

Shooting with this camera, for me, is quite different than the K20.  My
 rhythm
is off--I'm behind, and the K7 is ahead of me.  I've been working on keeping
up.  :-)  One factor involved here is the K7's sounds are different--lens
focusing and shutter etc--I can barely hear anything, which is good, but it's
thrown me off a bit.  Funny how you get used to the sounds of a camera.  That
horizon level is amazing. I certainly do A LOT less crop adjustments.  I
didn't
use the creative filter options on the K20, but I'm having fun with the K7's
filters--pretty fun, in my view.  Love the fish-eye, watercolor, and toy
camera
filters: http://www.caguila.com/caguila/k7play

The view finder is great, and it's easier to see through.  I'm not shooting
with the battery grip because I haven't purchased it.  A part of me would like
the vertical buttons, but I have to say, it's been so much fun shooting with a
really light camera.  That K20 is a tank, especially with battery grip.

Moving through a crowd with the K7 is fun.  It's so quiet.  I can get closer,
and I'm quieter.  Of course, if you get noticed, you get noticed, but if you
don't and take a picture folks aren't going to hear much.  I worry a lot less
about exposure due to the K7's improved exposure accuracy, and find I'm not
chimping  as much--though I do some--but still this is quite liberating.
Post-processing seems quicker--less cropping adjustments et al.

If the rumor is true that a K5 is coming, it's going to be really interesting
to see what the improvements are.

So, I think I'll keep K7.  I know I'm singing to the choir here, but I just
wanted to get my say in :-).

More testing and play here.  Comments welcome.  Cheers, Christine
P.S.  I know there are two color pictures in this black and white gallery,
 but
I just couldn't get rid of the playful purple.  :-)

I liked that one quite a bit.

Re: I think I'll keep the k7 :-)

2010-08-15 Thread Adam Maas

It's a very nice camera. I shot three straight days in 90+ heat on a
job. Just got home. Anyway, at the end of day two, I had one more low-
level tripod pic to shoot and picked up the camera out of my box,
screwed on the 60-250 and, knees aching, got down on the ground. The I
realized I had picked up the K20. I thought should I just finish up
with this, now that I'm down on the ground. Hell no. Got up and
swapped in the K7. Knees be damned (I actually burned my right knee on
the tarmac. Must have been hot enough to cook on.)

Christine, I agree with everything you say (except that I haven't tried the
various filters; just shooting RAW). I'm at about 1100 exposures on my K7, and

The only K10D function I wish the K7 had was switching back to the center AF

I really liked the whole gallery, and I have to agree with your judgment
on the purple. Particularly the solo shot of the little boy. I liked
that one quite a bit.

Agree with Brendan, as well. It's an advertisement for the K-7.

I feel your euphoria, Christine. I'm awaiting the K5 to evaluate so I can
either go for it or...reach back for the K7.
I really thought I wanted a larger step up from the K20 than that offered by
the K7, but I won't hold out the next effort.

I'm reeeallly, interested in learning about the K5 eventhough I just bought
the K7. I might go for a K5 K7 kit, and pass on the K20/10D to my
nephews--maybe. Cheers, Christine

It's a very nice camera. I shot three straight days in 90+ heat on a job.
Just got home. Anyway, at the end of day two, I had one more low- level
tripod pic to shoot and picked up the camera out of my box, screwed on
the 60-250 and, knees aching, got down on the ground. The I realized I
had picked up the K20. I thought should I just finish up with this, now
that I'm down on the ground. Hell no. Got up and swapped in the K7.
Knees be damned (I actually burned my right knee on the tarmac. Must have
been hot enough to cook on.)

Sorry about your knees the heat, Paul. Shooting conditions you describe
clearly hellish. Yea, it's going to be hard to shoot with the K20, but for
the time being I'll have to when I'm using two cameras on the construction
site. I'll go wide with the K7 use the DA* 50-135 on the K20. Cheers,
Christine

Christine, I agree with everything you say (except that I haven't tried the
various filters; just shooting RAW). I'm at about 1100 exposures on my
K7, and it's beginning to feel normal.

The 1st couple of days, the K7 felt so NOT normal, I was actually thinking
of sending it back. goofy, I know.

The only K10D function I wish the K7 had was switching back to the center
AF sensor by pressing the AF button.

I'm more used to the *pressing the OK button* for selective focusing, but in
the beginning, yikes, drove me nuts, now I'm much better.

I have a soft spot for the K10D because some favorite pics were shot with
that camera. Also, I think the DA* 50-135mm the K10D was a great
combination. Admittedly, this is a sentimental view because it was with
this combination that I really started to improve my skills. Though, I have
to say, when I hear the shutter of the K10D these days, I cringe :-).
Still, despite it's shortcomings, the K10D was/is a good camera. Cheers,
Christine

Cheers, Christine
