Re: I think I'll keep the k7 :-)
I'll probably get a K5, since my K7 now has well over 20,000 exposures on the clock. That's been my pattern: sell the backup camera (K20) and retire my main camera to a backup role when the new model is released. Considering the return on selling the used equipment and the tax deduction that comes with the purchase of new equipment, this strategy seems to make financial sense. And the new camera has always proved a plus in terms of on the job strengths. I expect the same again. Paul On Aug 16, 2010, at 8:08 AM, Jack Davis wrote: Well said, Boris. As a matter of shameless plug I am offering you this entry in my blog: http://pentax-ways.blogspot.com/2010/02/power-of-habit.html I should also say that despite having a number of advantages over K10D and up to date being the most advanced DSLR Pentax ever produced, I still think that older cameras, such as K20D or K10D (one that Galia is using as well) are very fine photographic tools. As I mentioned in a previous post, I still have strong affection and respect for both the K20D K10D. As for stealthiness, well, yes K7 is pretty stealthy, up to the limitations of sound produced by screwdriver AF motor and quiet but not entirely silent mirror slap. Might even see a 1/250 flash sync if we also get the extra fps. Aside from that probably incremental improvements to the video function and LV implementation and hopefully a flip/twist LCD (I really miss that from the G1 and E-30) Even with that, I'm expecting it to be a nice upgrade. K-x or better high ISO, resolution at least as good as the K-7 and all the improvements to the non-imaging parts the K-7 already got. Well, Adam, you paint a rosy picture here, which I hope happens :-) Cheers, Christine Heh, I was trying for the minimalist approach. The new sensor is a given, but I'm not sure which of the two we'll see. Probably the 16MP one as that's what Nikon and Sony are reportedly both using in their newer high-end APS-C bodies which should get announced in the next month or so. Pentax has been improving the Video and Live View implementations with each update so I expect we'll see that as a given as well (It'll just be software anyways). The extra fps and better shutter is a guess, but the capability's there and it differentiates the K-5 from the slower K-x (and rumoured K-r) better than the current 0.5fps difference does today. The flash sync is built on that, all of the 7fps-capable shutters are also capable of 1250th sync (the Sony's don't get it as their IS implementation limits the physical sync to 1/200 and they don't give the sync boost with IS off on the current A450/A550 but do on the A850/A900). If Pentax has this limitation as well it could explain the K-7's od lower flash sync (odd given the 1/8000 max shutter speed). The flip/twist LCD is just me hoping. I love the feature but it's not available on the bodies I would be interested in. I've tested the video, and it's fun. I aim to create some practice projects suited to the video features. If I had one knock against my K-x, it's that you WILL be noticed. After cutting my teeth on a used Olympus E20-n, which I often had to look at the disk-write indicator light to make sure I'd even taken the shot, I couldn't believe the shutter noise on my Pentax. One benefit of it, though, is that it does tend to startle birds, which makes for good take-off shots on occasion -- when I remember to hold down the shutter release in drive mode and pan, that is. I usually don't. On 8/15/2010 1:06 PM, Christine Aguila wrote: Moving through a crowd with the K7 is fun. It's so quiet. I can get closer, and I'm quieter. Re: I think I'll keep the k7 :-)
I suspect the K-5's going to be pretty much the K-7 with a new sensor and maybe a couple extra fps (the Sony 14.6MP CMOS sensor and the rumoured 16MP CMOS sensor are both capable of 7+fps and are the likely candidates for the K-5's sensor). -Adam On Sun, Aug 15, 2010 at 2:54 PM, Jack Davis jdavi...@yahoo.com wrote: I feel your euphoria, Christine. Re: I think I'll keep the k7 :-)
It's a very nice camera. I shot three straight days in 90+ heat on a job. Just got home. Anyway, at the end of day two, I had one more low- level tripod pic to shoot and picked up the camera out of my box, screwed on the 60-250 and, knees aching, got down on the ground. The I realized I had picked up the K20. I thought should I just finish up with this, now that I'm down on the ground. Hell no. Got up and swapped in the K7. Knees be damned (I actually burned my right knee on the tarmac. Must have been hot enough to cook on.) Well, Adam, you paint a rosy picture here, which I hope happens :-) Cheers, Christine Heh, I was trying for the minimalist approach. -Adam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
