Paul, I’m so sorry to read that Marlene has finally passed. Please accept my sympathy for you and your family during this difficult time. Re: My Wife, Marlene
Paul, please accept my sincere condolences. I speak from some experience when I say that there are some holes in our hearts that can never be fully healed, but we can celebrate the chapters of our lives that were written alongside them and, in the wake of their loss, turn our attention to the generations of our family that will be writing the chapters to follow ours. Celebrate the memories of the good times and please take some solace from knowing that you were there for her through to the end. That is True Love. It is also wonderful that you could make it possible for her to avoid the impersonal setting of a hospital for her final days and weeks. That is no small accomplishment. I feel confident in speaking for most here, that we feel honored that you have shared what you have with us, and we hope we can, in some small (and inadequate) way, share with you in bearing the immense burden of your grief. Re: Marlene
I'm saddened to hear of Marlene's present condition, and I hope and pray that she achieves the peaceful and painless conclusion that is her goal and yours. Continue to be strong for her and for the family. I have gone through similar trials over the past 12 years with first my father, then my mother, then my mother in law and then my younger sister. As my mother used to say "life is not for sissies." I agree with your comments on cancer ads. We have a very long way to go. A friend of mine from our local Rotary Club lost her 16 year old daughter to pediatric brain cancer a decade ago. She and her husband started a foundation, which supports cancer research at Columbia Presbyterian in NYC. At the annual fundraising gala a few weeks ago, the head of the research team reported that they have made significant progress in the last year towards developing a vaccine for that particular kind of cancer, but is will be years yet before they will know how effective it might be. A peaceful and painless conclusion is now the goal.. I've pretty much known this was inevitable since Dr. Kim, the surgeon, met with me outside the OR, 13 months ago. After six hours in surgery he looked defeated. "I wish I had gotten to this years ago," he said. "Is there hope? I asked. There is always hope," he said, head hanging. Today,Marlene's best friend drove up from Chicago and they laughed and even danced a little. (She was with Marlene when we met at a bar in February 1971.) A rare good day, but all we can realistically do now is wait and hug and whisper words of love. Did I tell you I deeply resent the ads from a cancer hospital that suggest they're beating the disease? They're not. It's a blatant lie aimed at getting more Medicare and insurance dollars. Fuck them. Not sure what to say, Paul. I've never had to go through anything like what you and your family and Marlene are right now. I can't imagine... I hope she's mostly comfortable and at peace. We know she has the love of her life at her side, along with the light of her life in Gracie. Hold her and treasure your time with her. She needs that now. Hey Paul, I hope her surgery turns out as well as mine did, and that her recovery is quick and uncomplicated. It's common to remove lymph nodes along with the affected area in order to help with staging. Here's wishing her negative margins and a clean follow-up report. My Wife, Marlene
Marlene is having surgery at 10 am tomorrow for colorectal cancer. No other organs involved but quite a few lymph nodes must be removed, including one next to the aorta. Been sorting this out since she was diagnosed last month. Not easy, but It’s the hand we were dealt. Prayers and positive thoughts appreciated.
