Not as common as 8x10 which is available in almost any department or discount store. Kodak used to, maybe even still does make a line of matting which includes 8x12 as a size. It's a bit harder to find an you have to nose about in better supplied stores Simon King wrote: Hi All I recently did a portrait session* with a family who has recent moved here (Perth, Western Australia) from Houston, Texas. Re: Mat sizes in the US (Texas)
Here in Canada, every lab I've ever used (pro, 1-hour, department store) offers 8x12s as well as 8x10s. I used to crop my shots sort of tightly, but now I usually shoot with 8x10 proportions in mind. Even so, I often order an 8x12 print and cut it myself, so I get the exact cropping I want. 8x10 frames are a standard item, but 8x12s are pretty rare, which means that an 8x12 print usually needs an 11x14 frame, with an 8x12 mat Most camera shops sell 8x12 mats, but the selection of colors is more limited than with 8x10s. Another oddball size I've occasionally used is 13.5x20. It's full-frame 35mm, but usually calls for a custom frame. Looks good for landscapes. Here's an opinion from a portrait pro friend of mine: 8x10 is desk size, 16x20 is wall size, and 11x14 is an odd bastard size that works best as an accent print beside (or on either side of) a 16x20. I get it! You use Vegamite because it is healthy. Then you add a lot of fat to make it taste good. I have a friend like that. Won't eat meat. Loves imitation hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. I figure that if I ate heathy I would live longer, longer than I would want to anyway (grin). -- Tanya Mayer Photography wrote: Simon Wrote: When we were talking they also told me that no one uses butter in sandwiches - they though it was weird that we do. I have never had a real scone, but what they sell as a scone here in the US (usually in upscale coffee shops) is a sweet buscuit (shortcake) with fruit in it. -- Simon King wrote: As for the butter thing. Hey, melted butter and peanut butter on toast was one of my favorites as a kid. If the butter did not run down my chin I figured I didn't have enough butter on it. Just to re-confuse you -- no way I'm making a PB sandwich (with or without jelly) without margarine on the bread first. The marg is necessary to stop the PB from sticking to the roof of the mouth, slowing the eating and possibly causing gagging. OTOH, yes, that combination on hot toast would make a big mess, but on room temperature or slightly warm bread, it works without making a big mess ... .. until, of course, the kid, in true kid fashion, opens up the bread to get at the filling ... But made with just a thin layer of jam and eaten in the adult manner, it's not at all messy. -- graywolf http://graywolfphoto.com/graywolf.html

Hello Simon, I get 8X12's printed quite commonly. You have to go a lab that will do it - my local Sams Club will not print them. The lab I normally use will print them. As for frames/mats, 8X12 is not common but does exist. The family may not have ever looked in a full service lab or frame store. Again, the local Walmart/Sam's Club type place doesn't deal with 8X12 but bigger stores do. We even use butter on sandwiches sometimes! -- Best regards, Bruce Sunday, April 18, 2004, 5:35:49 PM, you wrote: SK Hi All SK I recently did a portrait session* with a family who has recent moved SK here (Perth, Western Australia) from Houston, Texas. 8x12 precut mats are a little hard to find, but they're out there. I've found them at camera stores and at specialty framing stores.
