Re: More Ice

2021-02-13 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Larry, for the suggestion. I have a clamp light and LED bulbs I
could put in it. I actually tried going out on the upper deck, to see what
I could do. but I can't open the door because it opens outward and there is
two feet of snow and ice on the deck and right against the door.

I tried turning on the outdoor light on the deck next to the door last
night. Not much light reached the icicles I can see from the nearest
window, but I took a few exposures and will see what if anything develops.

Re: More Ice

2021-02-13 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
We have insulation on the roof and in the attic, but I guess we could
always use more. The classic sign of insufficient insulation is when the
snow on the roof melts away quickly, due to heat from the attic. We still
have a heavy layer of snow all over our roof, even on the southern side.

When the sun comes out, It melts some of the ice on the roof, and the slow
run-off forms these icicles.

I have had great luck using $10 clamp lights with LED light bulbs. If you
break off the diffuser, the LEDs are often on a flat plate giving you more of a
directional beam. Since they put out relatively little heat, it’s also
relatively easy to make a snoot out of aluminum foil, or for that matter
something like a cereal box.

You can also get light fixtures that attach to light stands, and I use those a
lot when I’m using the LED lights as hot lights.

Re: GESO - More Ice Storm

2013-12-29 Thread knarf
Thanks Attila.

I agree the street shot isn't much, more for documentary than artistic
purposes.

Our neighbourhood is an older (by Toronto standards) suburb - about 100 years
old and I'd guess the houses on my street are about 70 or 80 years old.

Newer areas have concrete light poles and wires are now buried.

Our single family homes and small apartments are almost all wood frame. The
exteriors are usually brick or siding (aluminium or vinyl) made to resemble
wood. Not many houses left that are actually wood siding; too much maintenance
involved.

Thanks for your comment and thanks to all who looked.

Cheers,
frank

Not necessarily. I've done it in the UK about four or five times.

Ah, come on, frank, they aren't all that sharp. :-) (Referring mainly to
#3.) I sort of like #4 he looks very determined as snow falls around him.

But I know what you mean, I sort of prefer your blurred action shoots too.

Still, a nice little gallery. Though I think the one you picked out to show,
two riders, as a peso is the best.

Nice stuff, Frank!

If you don't like the "frozen" part, you can get quite creative with
the use/balance of flash with existing light.

(Depends on which flash you have, of course)

If you have a flash which can do "trailing curtain" you can set the
ISO for, say, 400. Set the aperture for f5.6 or something and set the
shutter speed to 1/30 with a "trailing curtain" sync.

This lets a lot of light in as you pan across, and then the flash goes
BANG and freezes the subject - with the element of motion and blur
still visible in the shot.

If you have a standard "auto thyristor" flash, you can't do the
trailing curtain. I think, if you are just using the built-in flash,
you CAN use trailing curtain flash. Others who know more about the
original *IST can jump in and correct me if I'm all fulla beans.

Anyway, for your amusement:

That's Alberto, The Ice Emperor.

He's getting a bit long in the tooth by now, but back in the day I
think he won the annual ice race four years running. It wasn't
unusual up until several years ago for the guys (and gals) to dress up
a bit, have a bit more fun with it than they do now. A few of the
old-timers still do, but I think there were maybe two or three guys
that did it this year, including Alberto.

I think he placed second in his first two heats then got eliminated
somewhere around the quarter or semi-finals.
