We have a fair number of birds around here, but the urban setting is difficult.
A bird perched on a utility line just isn’t the same, so I rarely even try

The rain ended last night sometime and FINALLY we enjoyed a dry sunny day.
Was beginning to pick moss from my deepest wrinkles.
Took the D FA 150-450 out for awhile to hunt ducks and geese, as it turned
out.
Again, nothing that dramatic, but I got to shoot a couple hundred AF frames
of
snow geese primarily. Am extremely pleased with the clarity possible with
this lens,
but the snow geese were mainly just a tangle of wings, orange legs, beaks
and feet.
While many completely usable, I chose, instead, to attach a shot of two
ducks on a log.
Was in an area that has held some Balled eagles the past couple years, but
have seen

none so far this fall.

Thanks , Guys

The little sink hole has now become a much larger work area, so to
speak...

And then there is the reallly big hole across from Cooper Union - an
entire block where a building was torn down and the dig is two stories
deep - (see there goes the neighborhood in that 2012 gallery)

at least there were Co Ed guys at it pretty quickly - and people in
Duluth Minnesota would just be saying you call THAT a sink hole?

Re: PESO: Eagle Pair

2012-06-13 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks for the comments PJ, Jack, Frank, Dan, Ken, and thanks to others for
looking.
We live across the river from a small nature sanctuary which has had a resident
eagle for several years. There was mention earlier this year that maybe he had
paired up. We've seen one every 7-10 days, usually cruising by but occasionally
perching briefly. To see the pair together, and to see them perched for 15-20
minutes, was something quite special! I didn't want to leave my viewing spot
but finally broke off long enough to get a monopod. But not long enough to get
out the tripod or a longer lens. If there is a next time I will be more
prepared.

Hmmm the verticals ( shelf, coffee maker) vertical to me - but it

sadly, that includes, I just discovred, the level of food quality -

I agree with Christian that the original was much more representative

well-timed.

I agree on the timing. It almost looks like a shot of stuffed birds,

PESO: Finch Pair

2010-05-10 Thread Jack Davis
We have a very well utilized finch feeder. Keeps my wife and I entertained and
somewhat occupied refilling and restocking thistle seeds.
I attached a couple wild mustard and thistle stalks to the feeder, to give it a
more natural look, and reclined on the patio with my K20 and forever attached
DA 55~300.
Taken from their shadow side. A little quieter image.

That's not a bad shot. I like the vertical stacking of the birds in the
horizontal frame.
You need to go back in a week or so when the male is in full breeding plumage
and tell
the female to keep her tail feathers out of the male's face :-)

How much cropping and/or post-processing was involved? It looks like some
sharpening artifacts
are visible on the female's head.

Re: PESO: Finch Pair

2010-05-10 Thread Jack Davis
Heavily cropped from the silhouette side. They weren't completely black, but
lacked much detail. PS'd mainly to reduce shadows.
Actually, I've come to prefer this subdued light. So many sunny side male finch
shots are seriously blown out. I've resorted to a -1/2 comp to help control the
bloom on their feathers.
Yeah, I noted the edge artifacts, but a very conservative sharpening nudge was
applied.

Thanks for commenting, Christian!

Mind you, what makes sense to me likely doesn't make sense to the next

I hate to be too literal but I'm guessing it was a way to offer them to
anyone passing by that needed shoes.
they look like the same size... instead of taking them to a thrift or
just throwing them in the garbage.

This is happening a lot in my neighborhood... sometimes with notes
attached to the items free, please do not tag

Frank, I have no idea why those shoes are there, but I really like the shot.
The car tire in the upper right balances it perfectly, and the rendering is
very nice.
