Charles,

Nice catch!
I especially like the audience shot!
The spotlight beam is a great lucky addition.

I try to remember to aim my camera back into the audience at almost
every show at least once. You get some very interesting shots when
everyone is (almost) looking at the camera. And, as you state, it's
 not done very often.

In my workshops on Photography and Dancers, I point out that there
are other interesting subjects at dance events. I quote this text from
the musicle Cabaret:
The girls are beautiful...
The audience is beautiful, too...
Even the orchestra is beautiful!,
suggesting to photograph the audience, the orchestra, and other things
that might be happening off the dance floor.

Usually, I show some of these shots as examples:
http://42graphy.org/swing/lindyfest-2010/_IR_6443.html
http://42graphy.org/swing/lindyfest-2010/_IR_6448.html
http://42graphy.org/swing/abw-2009/13-Saturday-acbc-3-final/IMGP8353.html

Yours is also a good example of that idea.

I agree with the square crop. While I typically preserve the aspect
ratio of the shot when cropping (if I keep it rectangular),
I change it to a square often and without reservations.

During the time of shooting, for this particular shot, I may have
chosen to turn the camera vertically, and zoom in on the dancers.
That might add some dynamics.

I've been thinking about cropping options since you posted the square one,
Charles.

I find that the dancers are just too closed in on the square crop. They need a
bit of breathing room.

I think I'd consider the left side of the frame including the bass, or maybe
even half or all of that acoustic guitar.

Just a thought.

Cheers,
frank

Fixed-focal-length 90mm lens, and the dancers were in-and-out in about 45
seconds. If I'd tried to swap in the 135mm lens it would have all been too
late.

With the exception of the times I need a wide angle (thus utilizing the 16-50)
I never shoot with zooms at a concert. Too SLOW. This could change someday if
I ever get my hands on a K5.

 Tamron 90/2.8 ? or Sigma?
Exif says A lens, so, I am guessing, it's a Sigma.

 That's when I love using 50-135/2.8.
Tokina ATX-Pro 28-70/2.6-2.8 is also good for that, but for some
strange reason, it is not performing as well with the digital bodies
as it used to do with the film body: the photos are not as sharp.
I even had it checked, but have been told it is just fine.

I've tried to use 16-50/2.8 for dances, but I am underwhelmed with it,
at least for this purpose. 17-70/4 turned out to be almost perfect when I can
 use a flash.

It's the Tamron 90 f/2.5 - Adaptall-2 mount.

I got it for $80. But in order to buy it, the seller made me take the ZX-7,
the TTL flash cable with ends so that you can use the flash remotely, the
Tamron camera bag (which is now my primary bag), and the Pentax 28-80 lens as
well. All or nothing he says. OK

Re: PESO x2: Dancers and Audience

2011-12-05 Thread Christine Aguila
Expressions and body position of the two dancers is fantastic, Charles. Really
great. Love the 2nd shot as well. I think a BW rendering would be great for
that one, but the color rendering is excellent as well. Great work! Cheers,
Christine

I got in for free in exchange for photographing the festivities - a fair

One favorite image from the gallery is this one:

The other one was taken while up in one of the highest box seats. I just
aimed the camera back into the audience and took a 15-second exposure of the
house. At about 13 seconds, suddenly the spotlight came up and I think it
 really ties the image together.

Feel free to comment, if you see something you like (or would do
differently). I won't take a lack of comments personally :-)
