find that 1/500th is all that’s necessary. I do go to 1/1000th or even

Jack,
Thanks, there really isn't much more of the sign to include.
I cropped out a bunch of sky at the top, but not much sign.
The back lighting wasn't a problem until they got up against the sky.
My chance to catch these guys really made your hawk shot more impressive.
Getting a sharp bird on the wing is really special.

Re: PESO: Red Shoulder Hawks

2011-02-10 Thread Jack Davis
As I said, more of the sign isn't critical, but if the word Festival were
complete, it would be a slightly cleaner for me.
Appreciate your comments re my latest hawk shot. I called it a Red Tail, but
turns out it's, also, a Red-Shouldered. Awhile back I Googled bird
identification and have used the resulting site a couple times. They corrected
me, in this case.

No, I didn't Ann. I was actually just entering the area when he came up
out of the road side underbrush and flew along rather slowly
paralleling the roadway. He didn't go very far before stopping to rest
in a low tree limb no more than 40 t0 50 yds from my rig. I already had
the passenger window down, gently came to a stop in line with him and
took about a half dozen shots.
I've paid some dues, but still felt lucky/rewarded.

Appreciate the comments.

Went to the local State Wildlife Area, again, this AM. Brilliant day
and a nice break from recent, but much needed, rains.
A pro friend has gotten me into hawks at this point.
Am linking a crop from the middle of a shot of a Red-shouldered hawk
taken with my trusty FA 80~320. It's serving me well so far, but am
anxious to eventually get the DA* 60~250 which, I understand, MAY be
available in the spring of '08.
I have no serious intention of becoming 'a wildlife photographer'
accept on a very casual basis. If I were, I'd be thinking 600mm
 minimum.
All this type of shot takes is being there and shaking the target
somewhere within the frame, little PS and cropping.
Does give one the feeling of a true capture, however.

Re: PESO: Red-shoulder Breakfast

2007-12-20 Thread Jack Davis
Thanks, Paul. You're right, I did consider a tighter crop, mainly to
get rid of those fuzzy limbs close in on the left, but this is already
a very heavy crop and small file.
Ken suggested the same thing, so I'm providing the link to a tighter
crop. It's a vertical to include that 'wing' hanging down from
breakfast, the lower tip of which I cut off slightly when shot.
I think it holds up fairly well.

Did you use the 80-320 at 320? People often dump on

found it okay.

I've been pleased with the 320 setting on this lens, but didn't recall.
I checked the EXIF date and find that it was taken at 320.
As I indicated, the posted image is, also, a heavy crop,

Maybe even Fruit Loops?

Thanks for comments, Rick

breakfast, the lower tip of which I cut off slightly when shot.
I think it holds up fairly well.

A pro friend has gotten me into hawks at this point.
Am linking a crop from the middle of a shot of a Red-shouldered

taken with my trusty FA 80~320. It's serving me well so far, but am
anxious to eventually get the DA* 60~250 which, I understand, MAY

I have no serious intention of becoming 'a wildlife photographer'

  minimum.
All this type of shot takes is being there and shaking the target
somewhere within the frame, little PS and cropping.
Does give one the feeling of a true capture, however.

Re: PESO: Red-shoulder Breakfast

2007-12-20 Thread Brian Walters

Yes, I think the vertical crop is better balanced. How big an image were you
left with after the crop?

I find the 80-320 a real workhorse lens. Seems to perform much better than
would be expected for a fairly low-spec lens.

Cheers

I like it, but I'd crop it a lot more if it were mine... make it a
vertical with a little less to the right of the hawk
The depth of the tree branches are a tad distracting.

what birdie does he have there? did you get to see him make the capture?

I've wasted some bandwidth by doing what I always thought was a good
idea -- commenting before reading those of others.
So I opened your post first... then saw the virtual dittos re the
cropping :)

I do think this crop is better .
