It’s relatively fast for me, but there are many variables, including internet

Re: Photo.net question

2019-06-28 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Paul.

I finally got it to work, using the click and drag method. On previous
attempts, that didn't work or worked only on the thumbnail image. I had to
shut down my browser and computer and reload photo.net.

I was also trying to reorganize my portfolio there. It seems to take
forever to save any changes I make, even small ones.

Re: Gallery link in photo.net?

2018-06-12 Thread Paul Stenquist
It’s easy. Go to portfolios, then galleries. Select the gallery you want. Open
a photo. Go back to the full gallery, click “view” under the photo you want.
When it appears, copy the URL. Bingo.

Re: Photo.net

2017-11-22 Thread Paul Stenquist
The key to making photo.net behave is to work on your portfolio page, not in a
gallery. You can choose to have all your photos appear in portfolio or just
those from a single gallery. From ther you can manipulate them, replace them,
rename them, enter them in contests and more.

Re: Photo.net

2017-11-21 Thread Paul Stenquist
I don’t go to the gallery if I want to copy an image. I look at my portfolio
page and choose which gallery’s photos I want to view. That might be the
difference. Your portfolio page is where you can do the most work.

Re: Photo.net

2017-11-21 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Paul.

I was logged on, and viewing the gallery that contained the image I
wanted. (Yes, I have many, many galleries.) It would not let me drag
-- or right click on -- the image until, in the gallery view, I clicked on
the "view in another window" button. Once I did thatm I could just drag
the image to my desktop. All the other views of that image could not be
copied.

You have to be logged in and on your portfolio page. Then at upper left where

Re: Attn: Virus from "photo.net": do NOT open attachments in messages from Photo.net

2017-09-21 Thread Igor PDML-StR

That's correct.

As for "non-executable" extensions, there is still a danger there.
Thanks to Microsoft, the default setting in Windows is to masquerade
the "known extensions". This is frequently used by the perpetrators: a
file has two extensions, e.g. file.doc.js or file.doc.exe

So, it would appear as "file.doc" in that case.

(I always disable that extension hiding on all Windows systems I set up.)

BTW, in this specific case, the attachment in question is called
terms_and_conditions_doc.zip, and the file inside is
terms_and_conditions_doc.js

The interesting thing is that clamav doesn't indentify any virus in this
.js file.

Re: Photo.net experiment...

2017-02-20 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Ann, I usually try to avoid quoting the entire email or thread of emails,
because when everyone does that, each post later in the thread becomes long
and difficult to read. That works well for me, because my gmail takes all
the posts with a certain caption and threads them together. I gather it
causes confusion at times when others see my post outside of a threaded
series of posts. Sorry about that.

What I see now is a page Captioned as "Search our Community," with no
indication that the images are yours, unless I move the cursor over a
particular image, in which case i can temporarily see your name and the
title of the image. There are also ads interspersed among your images.
It's not really what I would consider a "gallery,' but at leasgt your
images are there.

whenever you reply to an email on PDML that has a link -- either a PESO
or perhaps something else someone is pointing out, your mail comes in
without the original link... it always happens, so it must be something
in your settings in email... so then no one sees what you were
referring to...

gallery came up with the link you posted...

It DOES says Search our Community at the top, but in the little search
box it has my name, and the photos that come up are mine .. unsorted..

as another test... when you reply to this, can you make sure all of this

Cool!
Dan, I liked the image when I saw it earlier, and despite the weather,
nothing has happened to it since that. :-)

PS. Many years ago, I was wondering what the number means when a movie
theater is called e.g. "Windchimes Cinema 18". And then I figured it out.

So, now, I know what "Monarch 12" means. ;-)

Yes, Mark this is the second one in the last few months. Both are
insect macros taken with my trusty old FA 100 mm F 2.8 macro, hand
held. I also am very pleased with the image stabilization of the K-5

This came as quite a surprise. I have been using Photo.net to store
most of my images that I intend to show here or share with others for
years, but this is my first photo of the day.

BTW, I chose another image from the same shoot for my PESO here of the
Sphinx or False Hummingbird moth, although this was among those chosen
for my GESO of the moth shoot.

Is anybody else getting great big interstitial videos popping up when viewing
photos on photo.net? A couple of weeks ago I was getting a small autoplaying
video ad wedging itself at the top of the page but this is a bit more obnoxious.

I do get to see the photo for 5 seconds before the popup covers it... but boy
am I losing patience with that site.

Is anybody else getting great big interstitial videos popping up
when viewing photos on photo.net? A couple of weeks ago I was
getting a small autoplaying video ad wedging itself at the top of
the page but this is a bit more obnoxious.

I do get to see the photo for 5 seconds before the popup covers
it... but boy am I losing patience with that site.

I'm seeing the ads at the top of the page and a scrolling strip of
adds below the image but both can be scrolled out of sight. Can't say
I've ever come across the pop-up videos.

Re: OT -- Really annoying Photo.net behavior

2012-03-29 Thread George Sinos
That's fairly common advice. In reality, it's probably not bad.

On the one hand, if a person is going to buy a camera without doing
much research, steering them towards the brands with the largest
market share isn't a horrible idea. If later, they go looking for
books, articles or accessories, the big brands will be supported.
Third party stuff almost always supports Canon and Nikon. Pentax and
the others may be supported, but not always.

On the other hand, 90% of the people that buy an SLR never buy much
more than a bag to carry it in. A smaller group might buy a flash or
one more lens. For that group, it just doesn't make any difference.
Any SLR on the market will give them decent results. That group is
unlikely to ever turn the dial away from auto. If they do, it will
likely be turned to a scene mode.

The advice I've been hearing given lately is, buy what your friends
have. That way you can borrow their stuff and they may be able to
answer questions.

I don't think this kind of advice is hurting Pentax as much as their
lack of marketing and sales. Maybe they'll settle in with Ricoh for a
while and have a chance to build a decent distribution network.

I agree with that. In fact it's pretty much the advice I give. I could
have steered two people recently toward Pentax and I didn't. I told
them that Nikon and Canon were pretty much a toss-up.

Most of these people want cameras with quick AF (and burst rates
though they don't know it) because they just want to point it at their
running toddler, hold the shutter button down, and have the camera do
all the work. I point them to dpreview for in-depth camera
comparisons, which is inevitably more information than they're
prepared to digest, much less read. When I show it to them, their eyes
just glass over.

They ask me why I have Pentax. Because it was my first SLR and I had
accumulated lenses. If I had to do it over again I'd go with Nikon.
(That way when I get a D800E I wouldn't also be spending through the
nose on lenses as well).

Most people don't take the camera off of auto. If they do, they don't
read the manual. If the pictures come out good they think it was the
camera. If they come out bad they think they weren't smart enough. In
fact many people don't understand why they have to manually turn a
ring on a zoom to zoom in/out when on their PS this was a
camera-controlled motorized function. They generally see a quality
improvement between the SLR in Green/Auto mode and their former PS.
They got what they wanted along with the self-esteem boost of carrying
an expensive fancy looking camera.

I may be wrong but, at least on my radar, Ricoh has had less of a
market presence than Pentax over the last 15 years. Would they have a
better distribution network?

What's the point of wasting time giving valuable advice to such people
who value self-esteem over good shots? They probably also drive an SUV
even though they've never been off-road in their lives.

Besides, people who want better image quality but to continue on
Green/Auto (and I don't knock such folk) would be best off with a
high-end PS like a Canon S95 or G12 or the Nikon/Panasonic equiv.
They won't be able to tell the difference from the o/p of a DSLR on
auto because they wouldn't ever stretch the SLR's capabilities.

Or send them to one of the Leica PS's. Then they'll feel super-ultra-smug.
