Try rotating the ISO dial from stop to stop a couple of dozen times, then take the lens off and move the aperture simulator lever from stop to stop a couple of dozen times as well. That at least takes care of the user servicable stuff. Pentax Canada should still be supporting the LX fairly well. The lower mirror bumper is not the only cause of sticky mirror, there are some other elastic rests in the mirror box that are likely deteriorating (turning to goo) and interfering with the mirror action. Cornelius Nuzzlemuff III

RE: LX grouchy when cold
Very typical of a camera in need of a CLA. The lubricants become sticky and too viscous. When I buy used Pentax bodies I test them and then put them in the freezer for a couple of hours and test them again. Many that pass at room temp fail when cold. Re: LX focussing
There are rubber bumpers on the mirror supports that are collapsing. It's a relative of the sticky mirror syndrome. They and probably all the other rubber parts, including seals, need to be replaced. Alistair Lax wrote: I'm delurking for a while, partly to ask the brother- and sister-hood for their expert advice. I've had an LX for almost 2 years. It doesn't have a sticky mirror, but it now appears to have a focussing problem. It has the standard SC-21 screen. When the split screen is in focus, neither the top nor bottom of the screen is focussed. The top "focuses" closer and the bottom of the screen farther away. The focus suggested by the split screen appears to be correct and the full frame is sharp on film, but I'm losing confidence in the camera's ability to focus correctly. It has probably had this problem all along, and I've only noticed it recently, having just picked up a M50mm/f1.4. A possibly related problem is that very occasionally the split screen "focuses" too close - the opposite of a sticky mirror problem - this problem can be sorted by moving the mirror up and down a couple of times. It clearly shouldn't do this - my second LX acquired last month doesn't have this problem. It looks like a mirror misalignment to me, as the screen appears to be properly in place, but I'd be grateful to hear any suggestions. thanks Alistair -- When you're worried or in doubt, Run in circles, (scream and shout).
Re: LX focussing
- Original Message - From: "Alistair Lax" Subject: LX focussing I'm delurking for a while, partly to ask the brother- and sister-hood for their expert advice. The bumper that the miror rests on is misaligned, and possibly in need of a replacement rubber pad. William Robb
Re: LX focussing
Thanks Mike. Second one was bought on Ebay - luckily the guy I bought it from lives on my route home, so I was able to check it over before bidding. There had been a glut of LX sales, so I got it for a reasonable price. Alistair >Almost certainly misalignment, possibly a problem with the bumper that the mirror rests on. Should be a simple and (comparatively) inexpensive fix. >Where did you get your second from?

Almost certainly misalignment, possibly a problem with the bumper that the mirror rests on. Should be a simple and (comparatively) inexpensive fix. If so, by how much? With colour print film, I generally overexpose by 2/3 of a stop as a matter of course. Slide film, I tend to stick to the rated speed and compensate accordingly. I've never had much luck with the LX in auto. I'll be happily shooting away, and when I process the film, find a few shots per roll that are, for no apparent reason, 4 or so stops underexposed. My LX used to do that, too. Interesting, I cannot say that I can recall any of my five doing that. As a matter of fact, the ladies at the lab I use used to comment that I was the most consistent in shooting a complete roll that they have come across. It is true that I still use a handheld meter, but I have often relied - especially in low light - on the LX meter... César Panama City, Florida

I tend to shoot automatic at wedding receptions, occasionally outdoors in low light conditions and often when shooting family snaps. I've never hade that problem with any of my five LXen. I'm not sure what is causing the problem. When I had my fleet serviced a few years ago, I had both the ISO resistor and the aperture simulator resistor changed out and the problem persisted, much to my annoyance. William Robb

Bill, do you compensate for this by lowering the ISO setting? If so, by how much?
