The problem with AF lenses (most of them anyway) is that they are AF lenses; loose, rattly, and focuses past infinity. Unfortunately, I've discovered that initially tight AF lenses develop looseness over time. It may well be that some newer AF designs are potentially beter optically, but getting the best out of them is more of a hassle. I have noticed this too but I do not think that the degree of looseness is a measure for the degree of durability. I think they are designed to become looser with use (to keep friction as low a possible). Once they have become loose it stays like this. However, there is a big difference between built quality among the various AF lenses. You have to pay much for built quality (I estimate that today a lens with a built quality comparable to that of the K-lenses is at least 4-5x more expensive than it was in the eighteens). Older, MF lenses are built to last forever and my experience is that they do and never ever get out of alignment or develop rattles. I aggree. But in those days, lenses were not categorized into consumer and pro lenses. Those who could afford the fast version bought a slower version of a lens. Both were made according to the same (high) standard. Today, the consumer is feeded with junk lenses while the right stuff has become excessively expensive considering the prices from the eighteens. Re: 30mm f2.8 was Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
I agree with all those positive comments about the 30mm/2.8 lens (particularly about it's great range of tonality). I just want to add that it also delivers remarkably high quality over-life size macro shots (in reverse mode on a bellows or extension rings). I have used this lens for 4x or 5x life size macro shots and I am quite pleased with the results. Enjoy, Alexander Bob wrote: Hi Thibault The 30mm is probably one of Pentax's most under-rated lenses and one of their best. I have one and have been singing great pleasures of joy since I bought it. I am sure that this lens was a all stops pulled design and I would be interested how the 31mm limited compares. I personally don't think the 30mm could be significantly bettered by the 31mm or competing lenses near that focal length. I had read many good things before buying my 30/2.8 and all I can tell is that I wasn't disapointed by the qualities of this lens. Although it is especially sharp, as the MTF tests can indicate, it has also a very strong visual sharpness and a great range of tonality. The rendering of out of focus scenes is also quite pleasing, especially close focus scenes. Mechanically the lens is awesome and still very light, lighter than K 28/3.5. The characteristic I like most about this lens is the very low distortion you get given the relative wide angle of the lens. Buildings and lines near the edges of the frames are rendered very linear, making this lens a very good lens for street photography. I have yet to see a lens of the same angle and size with so little distortions. The fact that the lens is quite rare explains its high price on the used market but it is also due to its qualities. As Bob Rapp said, a Pentax-M 35mm f/3.5 is a superior lens, and better than most other 35 mm lenses from anyone. That is HIS opinion. It is also my opinion. How much superior is totally dependend on what the user does with it. There are several features or qualities about lenses and how they perform. What is important to YOU is only known by you. If you want mid-range sharpness, that lens has few equals. If you want good bokeh, you'll have to listen to those who know ~ I don't pretend to be a lens expert NOR a bokeh expert. Do try to understand one thing, and this does not only apply to lenses: there is no such thing as best over all others. There is only better than something else. What might turn out to actually BE best for YOU, may not be agreed upon by somebody else. They may have reasons to say it is NOT best, for them. It's that reason that no-one can absolutely say This [whatever] is the very best. It cannot be true for everyone, for all circumstances. So, having said that, I'd try to stay with the question Which lens is better for me, than any others I know about? Also, don't forget, price enters into it as well. There are probably special lenses that have incorporated certain design features in them, that are quite superior to most if not all other lenses of it's type. But the cost is very very high. For instance, if you only get more sharpness from that extra money, may not be worth the high price. No-ne can answer that question for you. Take all you learn and think on it. Only you can decide. Go for K35/2 if you do need the extra speed. Go for K35/3.5 if you do need fine prints. I prefer K35/3.5 to K35/2 in point of center resolution/sharpness and better correction of aberrations. Yoshihiko Takinami (again) - very little light-fall-off even at wide open, amazingly sharp, good color rendition, great color saturation, scarce distortion, natural bokeh, great resolution Yoshihiko Takinami (again) - . . . one of the best Pentax lenses. . . Its color rendition and 3-dimensionality are really great. FA35/2AL is superior to K35/3.5 in point of correction, color saturation, and uniformity of image all over the frame. They are the two best 35mm (focal length) lenses Pentax ever made, IMO. David Collett - If you get a chance buy a 35/3.5, IMO it is the best cheap 35mm second hand lens you can buy. It has good contrast and is very sharp between f5.6 and f11. This may push the price up then perhaps I can sell mine for an inflated price and buy a[new] FA35/2 :-) Timo Hartikainen - a really great lens! . . . I'm very pleased. Hi John, Welcome to the list. Another Brit - we'll soon be challenging the yanks for top spot ;-) Not a million miles away, either - I'm just the other side of Oxford from you. Best, Cotty My name is John Whicker. I live in Aylesbury, UK, not far from London. I have lurked here for quite a few weeks now and this is my first posting. I have used Nikon 35mm equipment for more than 15 years, and Olympus OM for more than ten years before that, but I had always wanted to own and use a Spotmatic and Super-Takumars since my teens. I bought one a year ago and was hooked! Now I have changed completely from Nikon to Pentax bayonet and use an LX and a Super A plus a few fine SMC Pentax lenses. I changed to Pentax because of the lenses. Most Nikon lenses don't have good out of focus effects. Many Pentax lenses do. Good point. My Sigma 70-300 APO (the older MF version) has _terrible_ feel, flares badly, wobbles, and is butt-ugly. But I find it a useful lens and am unlikely to ever purchase another 70-to-Something zoom. In fact, the major reason I purchased the Pentax A 35-70 f4 last week was to use both in a 2-lens kit for those times when primes are just too much hassle. -Lon Mark Roberts wrote: Herb Chong [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: why this obsession with feel? Re: Build quality of lenses (was: Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?)
I think this is true only when posting to PDML. When I have something important (to me) happening in front of a lens, I: a) do NOT think what camera I have b) Do NOT worry about the lens c) Do NOT remember that I wasn't as kind to my second grade teacher as I should have been. d) Do MOT worry that that stupid plastic zoom som'bitch currently mounted may not be the appropriate lens. Shooting is different from posting, and more fun to boot. None-the-less, PDML is a hoot. And I'm thinking of only shooting with the M 28 f2.8 for a while because it's bad and because when I'm shooting wide angle my shots all look like they were taken by a 4-year-old. -Lon Fred wrote: for me, the discussions on focus feel are like discussing the paint job on a race car. I switched from Nikon AF to Pentax AF and I did it for the same reason as John--most Nikon lenses don't have good out of focus effects. I am new to photography and even newer to Pentax, but from what I have seen so far: Pentax has nice, small bodies with useful features and nice, small prime lenses with good bokeh. Plastic autofocus lenses don't bother me. The only thing I miss about Nikon is the Nikon automatic flash system which was perfect in nearly every situation. Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
Funny you should mention it. My first camera was a Miranda G. In 1974, on my Honeymoon in NY City, I traded the Miranda G for an OM-1 with the Zuiko 50/1.4. To compare the Miranda with the Olympus is like comparing Rod Stewart with Pavarotti. The 50/1.4 Zuiko gave me the best KR64 shots ever. It was one sweet lens. A couple of years later I got the hots for the MX, which was as small or smaller than the OM-1. Instead of buying the MX, I ended up getting the Ricoh XR-1. I figured if I build up a collection of K mount lenses, eventually I'll get a Pentax camera. Not before I traded the XR-1 for an XR-1s and then upgraded to an XR-X, that I eventually got my first Pentax camera. It was a Program Plus mated to a 40/2.8 Pancake lens. Coudn't pass up the deal, at $90 CDN. The rest is history.. Yup. Oly is my second choice. Cool!! My first bought with my own money camera was an OM-1, with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. Never could get used to the shutter speed dial. Switched to Nikon a couple of years later. My dad bought the Olympus A huge time later, like 15 years, I borrowed the OM-1 and the 50mm lens for a day and went shooting. Took some of my best pictures ever that day. I had forgotten how incredible the Zuiko 50mm lens was. William Robb

Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
Hi, My name is Mike, and I switched to Pentax because JCO sent me an old user he used to carry around his truck so I could try the old screwmount lenses. I did a flurry of great work with that camera and really enjoyed it. I think I'm about to buy a Konica Hexar RF, as I saw one in Chicago over the Thanksgiving break and was smitten with it. I used to shoot Leicas (M6 and M4), CLE, and the original Hexar, and the Hexar RF seems to combine a lot of the best features of each. Also, my first camera was a Konica T3, purchased as a gift from my father when I was 16, so I have a soft spot (in my heart, not in my head g) for Konica. Still love the old screwmount stuff, though. Pride of place is now held by a nearly collectible chrome ESII that I will not be parting with. --Mike

Hi My name is Paul. I used to shoot a spotmatic and 50/1.4 Tak at school, then years later i was heading off on a trip and bought a new Pentax SLR to take on the holiday, then joined this list a while later. Now i should mostly Pentax 645 and Leica M. Not really much pentax 35mm anymore. Hi, my name is Bob and you should know that the Konica RF is not compatible with Leica lenses. The flange to focal plane distance is different. I used my fathers Konica equipment before I bought my own camera, it had manual metering and shutter priority modes. I do not like shutter priority, didn't like what Canon had Nikon was too expensive so I bought a Pentax camera. -- David S. Nature and wildlife photography http://www.sheppardphotos.com

Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
Hi my name is Shaun, and I am an Pentax-addict. I blame my parents. They bought me my first fix when I was only a kid. A K1000 that served me well for many years. After that it was a down-hill struggle with dependence until I reached the pit of despair that I am in now. After the K1000, there was an MV, then an Me, a couple of Me-Super's. I managed to kick the habit for a while, but it eventually won. I then moved onto the designer gear, which if anything is more addictive. I bought a z-10 in 1991 to travel with. Then came a Z-1 in 1992. Then another small hiatus while my career got in the way. But that's all behind us now...in the last 12 months I have become a full-blown addict again. First came an LX, then a Z-1p, 7 or 8 lenses, 2 flashes, bits, pieces,. I am afraid I am lost to the dark side forever Young Skywalker. Cheers Shaun Paul Jones wrote: Hi My name is Paul. Hi Bob, Hi, my name is Bob and you should know that the Konica RF is not compatible with Leica lenses. The flange to focal plane distance is different. Thats debateable, my Hexar RF seemed okay when the RF was aligned correctly. Only problem was with any slight bump (or for no reason) and the RF went out of alignment. http://www.dantestella.com/technical/flange.html Regards, Paul - Original Message - From: Mike Johnston I think I'm about to buy a Konica Hexar RF, as I saw one in Chicago over the Thanksgiving break and was smitten with it. Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
I changed to Pentax because of the lenses. Most Nikon lenses don't have good out of focus effects. Many Pentax lenses do. Choose carefully and they are among the best this side of Leica and Contax, for very little money! John, Welcome to the verbal side of the PDML. Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
I used my father's Konica auto S2 throughout University while I worked at the newspaper. When I graduated I bought a Ricoh KR10 with power winder. I later added a Ricoh KR5 Super. When I got a little settled in I sold the KR5 and bought an MX with winder. I eventually sold the KR10 and bought an LX package of goodies, (Camera, winder, FBI with action eyepiece, magni-viewer ... I now us LXs and PZ1s with a whole host of lenses... PS-I just pulled out the old Konica auto S2 with Hexanon 45. f1.8 any comments on this... Bravo! Someone who can actually read the title of a thread, and one of the few who responded that did switch to Pentax. I did notice that no one has yet mentioned switching brands for Pentax AF gear. I bought one a year ago and was hooked! Now I have changed completely from Nikon to Pentax bayonet and use an LX and a Super A plus a few fine SMC Pentax lenses. Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
My name is Pat, and in 1979, I was shooting with a horrible Praktica. I bought it new and the shutter started showing wear and leaking light within a year. I gave it away, then considered the OM-1 and the MX, and went with the MX (preferred the shutter dial location). I used the MX happily for 17 years, then went AF and AE with the MZ-5, but traded it for the MZ-5n in three months. They seem so much like the MX, they're really friendly and familiar, unlike the PZ series, which never tempted me. Last year I got an MZ-S and 6x7, and really enjoy both of them. I never thought I'd buy a camera as expensive as the MZ-S, but I sure don't regret it. The MZ-S and 6x7 both say quality and reliability to me, and they seem friendly. I like that. Pat White
Re: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
Before I used (switched?) to Pentax, I was not serious but still took photographs the odd time (and that does count IMHO). Used a Minolta PnS, a Petri SLR, disposables, etc. Brad - Original Message - From: Bruce Rubenstein [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, December 04, 2002 11:48 PM Subject: RE: Who has switched to Pentax and why?
