I really dont see any effect(s).
you have horses in shade and a sunny lit
background. Whats so special about it?

White balance set for sun, the open shade will give a kind of blue cast
to the horses.

That's what it looks like to me.

PS - I'm only 80 some digests behind at this point.

Larry, early morning and evening we get some very interesting light. I'd
keep low sun's light in the background, open sky lit subjects and some
repetition. Takes some careful light evaluation or good eval metering
plus luck.

I went back yesterday evening. The horses had moved into an open
field. The good thing about digital is that I was able to blow off 133
frames. The bad news is that I've got like 133 frames of horses to
sort through looking for the keepers.

What I should have done is asked for pointers for shooting horses ina
field *before* going off for a reshoot.

I continued up San Felipe to Metcalf, top down in the Miata. I can see
that that little loop of a drive is full of photographic
opportunities. This may sound odd to folks who haven;t lived in this
area for more than a couple of decades but I didn't realize that there
was a little bit of California so close to the office.

I stopped to shoot a rusty barn, and it turns out that there was
someone working on a car in the yard I had parked in front of. He says
that a lot of people stop to shoot it, and the rusty farm equipment
just up the road (corner of San Felipe and Metcalf).

As a short digression, he had dropped a turbo charged 2.3l ford 4 cyl
into his 69 Cougar, replacing the V-8.

Later on, I got some shots of a tree in the late dusk. 30 second
exposures, a couple of them with flash. A quick look when I got home
last night shows that a couple of them have potential, but I'm no Dave
Savage.

Its a nice shot for sure, but the lighting isnt that hard to see.
You have horses and trees in the foregroung in soft light, thats
either skylight or shade from a cloud most likely. Then in the far
background you have the near background in the shade, most likely
a cloud, and the far background in direct sunlight. You can do it
again, but mother nature would have to co-operate and you would
have to wait for conditions to duplicate, I can tell you right now,
it wont be fast or easy to do.

Re: I like the light, but don't know what I did

2009-04-23 Thread pnstenquist
Here's what you did: You shot at 7pm. That's probably less than an hour before
sundown at this time of year, so it's magic hour. The sun is coming from the
horizon, and it's filtered by a lot of atmosphere. So the color is golden. You
caught a bit of light spill from open sky in the shade. That's like shooting
with the ball down in an open area. That's the best light you'll ever find. The
quantity and quality are partly dependent on atmospheric conditions and the
presence or absence of clouds, but it's the kind of light that the best
location shooters look for.

This is what I've heard, and I often shoot a just before sunset, but
I've never gotten the magic before.

sun is coming from the horizon, and it's filtered by a lot of
atmosphere. So the color is golden. You caught a bit of light spill
from open sky in the shade. That's like shooting with the ball down
in an open area. That's the best light you'll ever find. The
quantity and quality are partly dependent on atmospheric conditions
and the presence or absence of clouds, but it's the kind of light
that the best location shooters look for.

Thanks.

I noticed the light on the hillside behind the horses, which is a lot
of what caught my eye, but when I was shooting, I didn't really notice
the light on the horses. I've never really had magic hour work its
magic before, so I didn't expect it to be so magic.

As was pointed out, I think that the open shade must have done a lot
to help. So often around my house, I'm just down in a canyon of trees
and don't get much light from the sky at that time of day.

I went on a bike ride with a cow-orker yesterday. About 7PM I saw some
horses, and some pretty light on the hillside behind them.

The processing that I did was pretty basic, pretty much setting the
exposure levels and cranking in a little fill in lightroom.

I blew the sharpness in this photo, but I love the light. It almost
looks like one of those fake HDR photos. Other than just dumb luck,
how would I deliberately get this effect?

I'm not sure what effect you see. I see a very attractive scene with
great lighting. It's a pity about the sharpness - the horses are at the
centre of interest and if you'd got them sharp it would have been a
great image.

Not sure what a cow-orker is...

Someone who gooses a cow ?

Ah, Usenet.

The memories..

(and I'm quite convinced that orking cows, if not illegal, is at least,
ill advised.)
