Re: New web site

2010-10-23 Thread Nick David Wright
Thanks for the feedback.

At this point, the only point of the site is to share my work and to
serve as kind of a gateway to my blog. I'm leaning towards
self-publishing my work as books in the future and the site will then
act as a store for those books as well.

The small number of images is due to my taking my photography in
different direction from what I've mostly done in the past and I just
don't have many photos reflecting that as yet. I'll be adding lots
more as time goes by.

Also I changed the portfolio pages to have larger thumbnails, makes it
look not so empty.

Thanks for the suggestion on the about page. I struggled with the
wording of that phrase a while and never did like how it came out. I
think what I've got on there now is much better.

i'd suggest something on the front page other than a forced slideshow of the
same material in the portfolios -- perhaps the two images on the portfolio
page with direct links to each portfolio, positioned subordinate to a small
amount of text, such as a one line description of what one will find on the
site, something like seeing the people and places of the rural heartland)

the serif type is no problem for your name, but in the small blue type it's
not attractive, hard to notice, and a bit hard to read

instead of i first started making money, which gives an kind of flip

Hi,
like the simple clean design but would perhaps prefer a sans serif
font such as frutiger lite as opposed to the times new roman you're
using now - but that is just me =) tiny nit, on a slow line like mine,
all I see for the first three seconds is a white empty frame on an
otherwise grey screen - perhaps add a little animated something there.
oh, and I love the recession price value meal in your blog, what a
prime example of business ethics or lack thereof... other than the
above nits I like it but really in a quiet sort of way. Perhaps you
should tell the people you ask for comment a little more about what
you're trying to achieve so that they can tell you whether or not you
did?

Well done - a simple layout and intuitive interface that works well.
The two-tone grey background is effective. I agree with Ecke that I'd
prefer a sans serif font but that's a minor point.

Perhaps in the 'About' panel you could let us know your partner's name.

Interesting about the font.

I chose that font because it was the only one I liked which was
available in both the blogger design thing and my website design

I'm curious why you don't like the font? Oh, and it's Georgia by the

It's just a personal thing. I don't particularly dislike the serif
font, I just prefer sans serif fonts on websites. They seem to give a
'cleaner' design. If fact, most of the sites I visit regularly seem to
use them.

Vast overgeneralization here, but not bad as a rule of thumb: Serif
fonts tend not to do as well as Sans Serif fonts at low resolution
because the serifs break up. Plus the strokes are often thinner on
common Serif fonts, which means that the strokes become more uneven more
quickly on a Serif font as the resolution drops.

In print, you usually see serif fonts in the body text because the human
eye and brain follow them better. Then sans serif fonts for headers,
captions, and such, so they contrast with the body text.

That doesn't work as well in the display on a monitor world because
the resolution is so much lower and the Serif fonts suffer
disproportionately.

I think so too. The layout is pleasantly simple, and the transitions are
well managed. You have a lovely portfolio, too. I like the gentle light

H. I agree with that but there are plenty of web designers who
believe that using target=_blank is poor design. Somehow it's seen as
being disrespectful to experienced web users who apparently find links
opening in a new tab or window annoying (it certainly doesn't annoy me
and I think I'm reasonably experienced.)
