Anthony,

Are you 100% certain it is the hard drive that is producing these
clicks? May be it is one of the fans?

I should also mention, that for the future, you'd consider portable
applications. My WinXP uses all together 2.1 Gb of space with the
programs that I cannot use in portable mode. The rest (few GB) are on
the other drive and they are portable, so that I can easily backup
them just as a bunch of files.

Just my cents...

Definitely get the external drive and start backing it up now.

 There are probably others.

But, like Bill said, start copying your data files to another drive now.
Re-installing the O.S. and your apps after a drive failure is a pain in

I have two hard drives on my computer and one holds the O.S. *only*. And
I back it up with Norton Ghost once a week.

I keep my data mirrored on an external drive.

I don't mind reinstalling programs, but I hate losing data.
In Outlook Express you can change the store directory to a different location
than the stock
one. I don't know if Outlook will allow this though.
I changed my store directory to my mirrored drive.
I also regulary back my bookmarks file and anything else I can think of that is
stored by
default on my C drive to my RAID1 drive.

EP uses the NTFS file system, with no real modifications AFAIK and you
can force it to run on DOS 7.0 formated disks so I expect any good

The best image is always made when Windows is not running. And backing up
while Windows is running may cause a lot of extra drive activity (not nice
when it starts failing).

Here is another one, which will also run from a live CD (the Bart PE live
CD, which you need to make yourself). It will cause the least stress to
the drive. http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/index.htm
