Re: OT - Computer advice wanted.
Anthony, Are you 100% certain it is the hard drive that is producing these clicks? May be it is one of the fans? I should also mention, that for the future, you'd consider portable applications. My WinXP uses all together 2.1 Gb of space with the programs that I cannot use in portable mode. The rest (few GB) are on the other drive and they are portable, so that I can easily backup them just as a bunch of files. Just my cents... I took my PC with XP home to store to get a bigger HD, and he mapped the drive and transfered my stuff to it. He's out of business now, so i don't know what he used. I don't mind reinstalling programs, but I hate losing data. In Outlook Express you can change the store directory to a different location than the stock one. I don't know if Outlook will allow this though. I changed my store directory to my mirrored drive. I also regulary back my bookmarks file and anything else I can think of that is stored by default on my C drive to my RAID1 drive. EP uses the NTFS file system, with no real modifications AFAIK and you can force it to run on DOS 7.0 formated disks so I expect any good cloning software will work. RE: OT - Computer advice wanted.
Hi, My data files are on a second drive in the case which is newer and in good health. The C:drive only has the OS and programs, although the contents of Outlook will be on C: I guess I should back those up so I don't lose Address Book and Organiser contents. I'll leave things running for now (it gets quiet when it's just idling) and get some cloning software and a new drive tomorrow. The best image is always made when Windows is not running. And backing up while Windows is running may cause a lot of extra drive activity (not nice when it starts failing). Here is another one, which will also run from a live CD (the Bart PE live CD, which you need to make yourself). It will cause the least stress to the drive. http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/index.htm BartPE CD: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder Boyd -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
