Yes the huge resolution (but not only )benefit of HD is lost on small screens watched from way back. thats like buying a 16MP FF dslr and only getting 4x6 prints to stick on the fridge. Thats not what HD was develeped for. It was developed so you could watch a large screen image, even fairly close and still not have to see all the artifacts that old analog video formats have like scanning lines, blurry edges, video noise, etc. Even that said, you can seldom match the color of an analog set to match that of an HD set for all scenes because the color scheme for analog tv is not as good. The most obvious flaw is what I call poor "color contrast" with the old analog sets compared to HD( I am sure its got a real term but I dont know it off hand). With analog video, the parts of the image with the deepest color saturation are just not as saturated as they should be and the parts of the image with the least color saturation are too saturated, hence the term poor color contrast. The color is kinda all the same saturation level, like a muddy gray BW print would look like if the paper was fogged a little. This really screws up the flesh tone color compared to the realistic flesh tones of HD. Everybody sorta looks like they have just used some bad suntan creme on analog once you get used to the accurate color of HD on a good HD set. The point of all that is that you cant fix the color by using a small set or standing further back. Its worse from any distance or on any size screen compared to good HD color reproduction. And this color accuracy difference I am reffering to here is much more of a problem with analog tuned broadcasts than what you see in a store display because that is usually always a direct input to the tv via a DVD or downconverted HD signal which looks better than what you would get on a typical analog cable or analog antenna system tuned channel. Both the color accuracy and the resolution get worse on an analog set with a tuned analog channel compared to a direct feed. Yes, but when I post a bunch of facts on the history of TV sets and explained exactly why his initial story did not make sense and offer probable explanations as to what his situation really is AND THEN HE PROCEEDS TO TELL ME my opinion/facts are "wrong" and he did, and then its later revealed that I not only was right, my speculation that the set would most likely have been made at later date if it had video input jacks, AND IT WAS, ( he gave false 6 yr earlier mfg date ). That has to be called on and it was. I am not proud of myself, just proving once again to know what the hell I am talking about when I post these kind of things. Its simply a credibility issue. I hate to say it but GRAYWOLF is sorta busted and my statements on that topic were not wrong at all. That set clearly is stamped 1989 and he initally claimed it was from 1983. I told you all that in 1983 you couldnt get any sets with video inputs on them except on top line Sony and I stated that the set most likely did not have any video inputs or was made at a later date, and there it is folks " 1 9 8 9 " stamped right on it not 1983 as initially reported and discussed and being told wrong by him when there is nothing wrong with what I said at all. Maybe we had a mixup on the date, I dont recall 1989 ever being mentioned, only 1983, but I stated 1983 in my reply posts and he didnt correct the discussion to 1989 like he should have. Also another dead giveaway to vintage is that it's stereo audio tuner. That didnt come out till '84 on any sets, even my ultimate set from '83 had a "multiplex output for a future stereo decoder to be available soon". I got one a couple years later. this all brings back great memories. Maybe not, there were still electronics and tube manufactures in the US at that time IIRC. Sorry I missed your "number". $5K ? Not necessary. You can get some nice HD sets as little as $1200 now. I saw a beautiful 42" sony at sears for that price, probably even cheaper elsewhere. There are even a few CRT HD projectors left selling now for only around $800-900. It sounds like you are a special case of limited income and that's unfortunate. That doesnt change my opinion one bit that the average joe blow and afford a nice HD set at todays low prices though. Yes, I thought that was interesting, especially those big 3x5 inch speakers. After thinking about it I realize the electronics are probably the same as in the portable TV's, only the box is bigger.
