Yes - it was controlled fairly quickly and I don't think any property
damage occurred. It was a few km east of us and anything east is
usually not of concern here because the winds are invariably westerlies.

A bit of rain and no winds for a while would be good, though...

Thanks, Ann. It's interesting that different agencies seem to calculate the
same quake as different magnitudes. They're thinking at the moment that it was
two quakes with the first triggering a second larger one but it'll be a while
before they untangle all of the data.

Just getting a good wobble now, must be a fairly decent aftershock.

Last I heard is there have been two fatalities but details are pretty scant. I
think Wellington had more damage than we did; the USGS info seems to indicate
the quake propagated northwards. You're right about Kaikoura. The coastal
highway north of there is very scenic. Good whale-watching just off the coast
as well.

I was wondering if our Anglican Cathedral might have finally collapsed but
there's been nothing in the news so I suppose it must still be standing.

I heard there's a bushfire not far from you, hopefully that comes under control

since. It's nice when it's far enough away that you don't get aftershocks
waking you up every few minutes.

Looks like there's a bit of destruction around the Kaikoura region. Might be a
while before the roads reopen up there as there are a couple of broken bridges
and impressive landslides.

Tsunami-wise we may have dodged a bullet as the area off the Kaikoura coast is
known to be prone to underwater landslides. A small one was generated and
looking at a tide gauge it appears that the sea bed may have been lifted by
about 700mm (27.5") by the quake.

Cheers,
Dave
