Usually depends on the subject matter, composition and many other factors. Ithes
case, I think the color works better.

Don't always agree with you about which photo of a subject is the one to
be "bannered" as it were, but I do this time. I like both the color and BW
and the sorry Rv reminds me of two things.  The one in "Into the Wild"
and what a ranger told me about the condition Edward Abbey left the trailer
he lived in at Arches back in the sixties (Desert Solitaire) ...though
neither of those were torn apart inside to the extent yours is..

It is of course sad to see the end of the PDML Annuals, but it has been a
marvelous eperience for all of us who participated and benefited from the
project over the year.

You have put in a tremendous amount of work on our behalf each of the past
10 years and, more importantly, an incredible amount of talent and
artistry. We are all deeply indebted to you and those who worked with you.

I shall treasure the books and the memory of what this group, under your

Re: Sorry about my absence

2019-01-14 Thread ann sanfedele

Ooops! sorry!
Once again my math fails... but no - I just counted my books and I only
have 9  - I'm missing 2014!

Dont' even know if I'm missing it totally or mislaid it.  :-(

It's especially funny because I had just been having a long discussion
on facebook about kids learning math... fessing up that I was terrible
at it.

You set a very high standard, it would be hard for anyone else to step in! So
let’s just flog sales of the 10-Volume PDML Masterworks and see if we can’t
fill the funding gap that way for now.

Since we are now easing our way into the 21st Century and all things digital
seem to be the rage, I may have a suggestion for an alternative forum. I’ll
think about the details and get back with something concrete, real soon now.

Meanwhile, Thanks Mark!

Re: I feel sorry for your children

2014-08-25 Thread John

Had to deal with shit like that when I was running the mini-lab.

Had a woman come in with one of those disposable cameras. The film had
two toddlers in diapers playing in the sprinkler a wading pool. The
inevitable result of toddlers in water-logged diapers happened before
she got to the end of the roll. Nothing pornographic, just two kids
splashing in a plastic blow up pool where they've lost their diapers in
the last three or four frames.

But one of my nutcase co-workers got all upset went to store
management when I told her not to call the police on the woman.

As with the dog walker picture, this needs tighter cropping to align
with the title you've given it. OTOH, this is a perfectly fine street
shot if you're not trying to emphasize the sign (a bit busy, but that's
often the case with environmental street shots -- you're trying to
convey a mood more than a specific subject).

Thanks for posting, Paul.  I had heard a little bit about this a while

Here's the link to a 9 minute piece on  Maier on Chicago Tonight, which
ran on WTTW, channel 11 here in Chicago.  I just watched it; it's
fascinating. The 1st American exhibition of her work will open in early
January here in Chicago at the Cultural Center.  I'll attend and provide a
report back for PDML.  Given the size of Maier's archive its subject
matter, the Department of Cultural Affairs in Chicago really should help
with this project in a major way, and it seems to be doing what it can, but
every art department in the city is strapped for money.  It will be
interesting to see what the city continues to do for this lovely and
 important work.

Mixed bag there. The Confectionery violated that neutrality in 1861,
(as if a State could remain a part of the Union and be neutral, I can't
think of any theory of law under the Constitution as it was even then
understood where that was legal). Kentucky organized a number of
military units which fought with both sides, and the official elected
Government was decidedly pro-Union. The Confederates also set up
competing State government after their invasion loyal to the South which
was admitted to the Confederacy on Dec 10 1861.

Andrew Jackson is claimed by North Carolina, South Carolina and
Tennessee. Jackson was born in the Waxhaws area disputed between North
Carolina South Carolina. His exact birth place is unknown, and both
states claim it is within their state as the boundary was eventually
settled.

In 1787, Jackson was admitted to the bar in Jonesborough in the Western
District of North Carolina.

The Western District became the Southwest Territory in 1790, and in 1796
became the state of Tennessee.

Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution states that no new States
shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State
... without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned.

The North Carolina legislature DID give its consent for the creation of
Tennessee from the former Western District of North Carolina and
Tennessee is the only state thus admitted.

(West Virginia was admitted without the consent of the Virginia
legislature due to some finessing of Constitutional requirements because
of Virginia being in a state of secession at the time).

Re: Sorry Aussies, it's ours!

2010-12-03 Thread Walter Gilbert
This sort of reminds me of the ongoing dispute here in the US
between Kentucky and Illinois. Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky,
but spent most of his life and political career in Illinois. Illinois
claims to be the Land of Lincoln ... but, we still have his old log
cabin birthplace here in Kentucky.

Oddly enough, Kentucky was also the birthplace of the president of the
Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, during the Civil War, and never officially
seceded from, nor joined, the Union. Thus concludes today's Moment of
Pedantry -- with your host, Walt Gilbert.

Must have been playing it safe if they didn't know for sure. Or maybe they
have some expat kiwis on their staff and couldn't settle the argument :)

I don't really care who invented it, it's just delicious. But it's a real pain
to make so I only have it a couple of times a year. And now that I know how to
make zabaglione, I have a good use for the leftover egg yolks (and the bottle
of Marsala of course).

BTW it's not a pavlova without sliced kiwifruit on top...

Dave
