Yes: What I've been reaching for all these years as digital capture cameras 
have come into being and matured into usable devices is a camera with the 
familiarity to muscle memory and mind that it disappears from my sight when in 
use the same way that my first Leica M and my Nikon F cameras did fifty some 
years ago. The Leica M-D 262 finally achieved that; the closest an SLR ever 
came was the Olympus E-1, but that's now been replaced by the Leica CL which 
can be configured to do that disappearing act for me (and which also feels in 
use much like my Olympus Pen FT half-frame camera once did, one of my favorite 
film cameras…). 

No desire for a boat here, and I have the car, the motorcycle, and the bicycle 
which make me smile on the vehicle front. Speaking of which, it's time for my 
afternoon bicycle ride … :-)

One of the things I like about my Oly Pen F is that it is so reminiscent in 
size and feel to my Pentax MXs of yesteryear.

I know this should not be important but actually the familiarity is quite 
pleasant, really. Much like the 'feel' of your Leica M is effectively recreated 
in the more modern digital examples. You obviously prefer that - familiarity?

The Fujis have this 'familiarity' also. Heft and metal. I don't prefer 
lightweight cameras with lots of plastic.

I suppose I would be a good Leica customer but I'd rather spend my hard-earned 
crust pouring diesel into my Land Rover, or saving for the day when I can buy 
myself a boat.

I often get asked this type of questions by friends.

While I am myself a big fan of the SLRs I have (and had before), - today, 
I would not suggest a DSLR as the first camera in the case like yours.


Here is my earlier response on this list to a similar question from Eric:

Even though that was written for a 12-y.o., practically all the same 
thoughts are applicable to a 15-y.o.



So, I would suggest either one of the micro-2/3 cameras, if the 
interchangeable lenses are desired, or a well-capable ("more advanced")
P, - such that offers manual control for most parameters (almost the 
same as in case of an SLR or rangefinder).


In case of a P, I'd suggest to buy a camera with a fast lens (f/2.0 or 
faster, -- there are a few cams with 1.4 or 1.7).

A faster lens typically shortens the reach of the zoom.
But the practice shows that typically, you don't use as much of the long 
end of a P "superzoom" (the image quality is not as good, and

you are not buying a P for birding), but you'd appreciate
a fast lens.

For about 10 years, I've been following the models of the advanced P's
(but stopped in the past ~3 years). We usually had one either for my wife 
or as a camera for me when I cannot take a DSLR (e.g. on a snow mountain).


Brand- and model-wise, for a P, I'd look at the Lumix LX line, - 
currently it is Lumix LX10, or Canon Powershot:  G7 X Mark II at this 
point, or its predecessor, that is still available and cheaper, - G7 X.
These two model lines have been very close to each other, - but somehow 
I've always made a choice in favor of Lumix, and never regretted.


I don't know the most recent micro-2/3rds models, but I am sure some 
people on this list can recommend those.

Now, let me comment on the C, N, and P lower-end (D)SLRs.
 While I haven't looked at those in the past 3-4 years, my experience from 
the previous 20 years form my opinion that the lowest end Canon DSLRs (and 
SLRs),- "Digital Rebel" (and Rebel before that) are a bad choice.
 They are made cheaply, and are not as good performers as the counterparts 
from Nikon and Pentax. Canon good cameras are their high-end models (And I 
don't have sufficient experience with Canon mid-level models.) It seems 
that the intent of those cameras is to hook people on Canon brand with a 
low price, and lock them in there, expecting the need for an upgrade.


In contrast, the low-end Pentax and Nikon have been good, solid performers.

The K-70 is a better all around camera than Nikon and Canon entry level 
systems.  I haven't looked at Canon's bottom tier Rebels lately but 
earlier ones had crappy viewfinders and not particularly great IQ in 
addition to having smaller sensors, plus feeling decidedly plasticy.  
The Nikons have a lot fewer features and IIRC their bottom rung D3xxx 
series is pretty hobbled by it's feature set, and their viewfinder again 
isn't the best.  They're not as cheap feeling as the Canons were though.


I have an analogy here.  When I was just a wee youth, my parents paid 
for guitar lessons, and an inexpensive instrument.   The one I picked 
out was obviously the nicest I could find, it just looked good, but what 
did I know about guitars.  I didn't realize until much later that I was 
always cutting my fingers on the strings because they were positioned 
too far from the fretboard.  Because of that I never enjoyed playing and 
gave it up.


My point is, if the equipment is unpleasant to use, it will kill a new 
users enthusiasm as fast as anything.

Kao is always reasonably entertaining, and it's good to see him enjoying a 
Leica M. He does get into a bit overmuch on the Focusing stuff ... most M users 
in good light like that will set f8 and the zone they want and not touch the 
focus at all unless they move in or want a broader distance view. 

The other minor but significant thing I notice in all these reviews is that 
they always say the camera is trying to be a "analog" ... aka "film" ... camera 
in feel and use, even Leica themself does that.

I have a K5 that looks like new, with the original box (nice condition), the 
strap, charger, cables, instruction manual and battery, all in the box and 
never used. Not sure of the shutter count, but it was my backup and I don’t 
think I used it a lot. Can’t get a count on my shutter count, and since I have 
a Mac the EXIF reader won’t work. You can have it for $250 or $300 with a 
battery grip.

Not quite the same kind of camera, Mark. The PIXII is a much simpler, 
all-built-in storage and battery camera with just the optical rangefinder. The 
M10-D is a limited edition version of the M10, sans LCD, and takes an optional 
EVF, takes SD storage cards and M10 batteries, and is configurable/controllable 
via WiFi with the Leica FOTOs app on smart phones. It is as yet unclear whether 
the PIXII is APS-C or FF format but it is considered very likely to be a 16 
Mpixel APS-C format camera; the M10-D has a FF format sensor with 24Mpixel 
resolution. 

The M10-D follows the very successful limited production M-D model, which sold 
out its run within a year and a quarter. I bought the M-D and it has become one 
of my most favorite cameras of all time, as well as my favorite Leica M whether 
film or digital capture. :-)

Special edition, low productions always cost more than standard production 
items, from any manufacturer, regardless of feature set. 

Current price of my special edition Leica M-D typ 262 is now $500 more than I 
paid for it New, after being used for two-plus years.

I agree about the "advance" lever. That kind of tat is beneath Leica
(or should be).

I also notice: Unlike the  PIXII, the M10-D does accept standard
memory cards. And it uses DNG as its native raw format.

This is officially the first leica that's ever interested me.

Yep, I have 3 of these GXR-M modules. They are extremely good and I use
them periodically. They don't disappoint.  In fact, at this time, I don't
see myself getting rid of them. They are worth nothing these days while in
fact, they are extremely capable for most of what I am shooting for my own
pleasure.

I am mildly interested in seeing how this develops. If the price is low enough 
when introduced, I might try it out. Have virtually no experience with 
rangefinders, but I do have 3-4 M-mount Leica lenses from my late 
father-in-law. I have tried pairing them with the Q-S1 but with a 5x “crop 
factor” it is hard to find a good niche for the lenses when used with that 
system.

Thanks for your wonderfully upbeat response. =8^/

Epson R-D1 cameras were a bit early on the curve, and Epson decided not to put 
any more development in when Cosina was in the process of closing down the body 
production it was based on. It was the only other digital rangefinder camera 
ever made, and is still sought after by some enthusiasts despite being 12 years 
out of date with respect to sensor technology.

The Ricoh GXR with M-mount camera unit was the only other non-Leica camera made 
specifically with a sensor tailored for M-mount lenses .. you didn't adapt 
Leica lenses to it, that's what it was made for, in contrast to all the other 
EVF cameras on the market with the exception of Leica's own. The issue with it 
was that Ricoh made it and its system too complex, making it difficult to 
market, sell (due to the price), and maintain development for. It did a superb 
job with a very large range of M-mount lenses, certainly more than any of the 
other third party M-mount adaptations. Many Leica enthusiasts still have and 
use the GXR, and wish Ricoh would have developed a better EVF and higher 
resolution sensor for it. But it remains an EVF camera, and many still want an 
optical rangefinder. 

I figure if the PIXII makes it to production, whether APS-C or FF, it has a 
good shot at a reasonable niche audience if it performs well and is reliable. I 
doubt it's going to take the world by storm and become a new standard that 
everyone aspires to. But I see no reason not to be optimistic that it gets into 
production and satisfies a community of enthusiast users. 

Note that I won't be one of them. I have my CL and M-D Leicas already and don't 
need another M-mount camera. :-)

That Pentax-L 43mm Limited remains interesting to me, yes, for both my M-D and 
CL bodies. It's just a bit hard to come by and a touch pricey but I might go 
for one, eventually.

So is a Leica pretty much any of them, or even a Epson RD1.

I have a prediction, it doesn't have the name Leica on it, and it 
doesn't have a red dot, based on that I predict this camera will tank in 
the market, because it will require a Leica sized price and really no 
one really likes a range finder, (well I like rangefinders, but only in 
comparison to cameras that have scale focusing), if they have another 
choice, unless it has the name Leica on it, and there are lots of 
rangefinder like cameras with EVFs to choose from these days.


I also predict this for the new Zenit M, because, the Zenit was an 
inexpensive camera that actually cost more to make than it sold for, 
because the Soviet Union really needed Hard western currency.  At 
$5000-$7000 it just isn't worth that much for a Russian branded 
novelty.  If it costs like a Leica, you might as well buy a Leica.

it looks like a Jaguar XK120. The XK140 is very similar but I think
had fewer bars in the grill and a chrome strip down the centreline of
the bonnet.

My plan was to wait until prices have dropped, or at least until stores 
start selling the body with a kit lens (28-105) at a discount.  I 
suspect that demand for the camera will stay high enough for longer tha 
my patience.  There's the question of how much I'd save, and how much 
per month I'd be willing to pay to not wait until that time.

late in the evening - not an issue with the longer days at present - and
anything that allows me to not use a flash, is a real plus. I've been

DB review and TOP were fawning over it, and it is an attractive object.  
To my eye eye, it looks like a Leica M mated with an iPhone, mid-wifed 
by the Sony Nex design team, but in a good way.


Bottom line it has a 16mp sensor, possibly the same or similar to the 
one used by Pentax in the K-5IIs, so it starts with pretty high a base 
image quality, a new lens mount, and strangely enough considering 
Leica's compact camera prices it sports a MSRP that's simply a bit high 
for it's capabilities, compared to the competition, as opposed to 
stratospheric.

Well, my first camera was a K1000, but I'm still learning to focus. And I want 
to continue. I think I remember someone, I think Godfrey, talking about getting 
good enough that you could get focus to just snap into place without a lot of 
back-and-forth homing in. I don't know if he meant to suggest that was 
possible in action situations. If so it's where I'd like to get.

That said, and while I'm leaning toward a K-5 as my new camera---all of the 
quality I can afford right now, or am ever likely to---the X10/X20, with its 
manual focus limitations s certainly appealing.

 For my own personal photography, I want studious concentration and just
 a few lenses I know and can use to my liking. But I also want it reduced
 in size. I don't want a camera bag full of stuff. I want one camera *in
 my pocket* and one over my shoulder. And that's it!!

My aspiration, too. Simple and as small as possible. While it had it's 
limitations---I would like to have brought some scenes up closer---I really 
liked going with just the A28/2.8 and *istDS on my trip. The last half of my 
walk I literally had the camera in-hand the whole day. I found it to be the 
most convenient and the most comfortable way of carrying the camera.

One can still obtain new K-5 cameras Beach Camera, last I checked, had 
them for about $100 less than the K-5II through Amazon.

If found this site, that some of you may already  be aware of, that just 
compares camera sizes and weights. To my surprise the K-5  was lighter than 
the Canon T4i. Nevertheless, I will be going again with Canon.  But it's still 
a fun site...

And by the way, if I was going just for  image quality in a 
mirrorless/compact, I'd go with a Fuji X10/X20/whatever.  Every review I have 
read 
everywhere regarding IQ has been great. (No, still  undecided on a non-DSLR. I 
may, 
budget willing, get both a DSLR and something  else.)

one stone. You may remember me fretting about what kind of camera to take on 
the walk part of my trip. In the end I decided to go with m *istDS and a couple 
of short focal length primes, an A 28/2.8 and an A 50/1.7. I never took the 
28/2.8 off the camera. Essentially my solution was Paul's. 

So, not a done deal, yet, but leaning very strongly that way.

Thanks for complicating my decision, Cotty. -;) When I went to the review where 
I thought I remembered fairly extensive comments to this effect I didn't find 
what I remembered. I think I may have misunderstood. The only thing close to 
what I thought I remembered was in a comparison of in-camera and external raw

Basically you select manual on the front button (MF)

4th image down on this page:

and then use the control dial on the back

On the rear LCD you will see a scale with a mark that moves along and
back depending which way you want to focus the lens.

The one thing I would say this camera (and the X20) are not very good at
is manual focus. It is fiddly and slow. If you are looking for good
manual focus control, perhaps look elsewhere.

That said, the AF is extremely good - and supposed to be even better on
the X20. I never use manual focus on my X10, and so far haven't needed
to. Even in extreme macro, the AF locks on and is accurate. I generally
focus and recompose. So - a half press with subject in the middle of the
frame, then recompose, then a full press of the shutter. Works well.

But a camera liker this is obviously limited. We're probably similar in
that we both grew up with good old manual focus lenses, and actually
that's what works for us and we enjoy using them. Not to say autofocus
doesn't have its place, but for me, I have no need right now.

A friend asked me to shoot some pics of funfair rides for a review he
was writing. For that, I borrowed my son's Canon 1D mark IIn and a 17-40
and a 70-200. The rides were fast and furious, yet the camera and 70-200
were able to track the subjects no matter the speed - no way I could
have had the accuracy of focus with a manual lens, certainly not for the
dozens of shots consistently in focus.

But that was a rare request and I knew the gear was capable.

For my own personal photography, I want studious concentration and just
a few lenses I know and can use to my liking. But I also want it reduced
in size. I don't want a camera bag full of stuff. I want one camera *in
my pocket* and one over my shoulder. And that's it!!

Fortunately I've been able to put together exactly that and I am about
to get to be able to play properly. I did my back in last Tuesday and
have been off work recovering, otherwise my SO and I would have been out
last night to a concert where I asked for permission to shoot a band,
and was given.

The combo I was so looking forward to using was my new mirrorless camera
(Fuji X-E1) and my good old Pentax 85mm f/1.4 - the perfect lens, in my
opinion, for the job.

Otherwise, that would be the camera over my shoulder, with a 15mm/4.5
(angle of view equiv. 23mm on my cam) and the X10 in my pocket. Spare
batts in another pocket, and good to go!

As they say, your mileage may vary :-)

Hi Eric:

I'd like to endorse Paul's suggestion about the K5  DA 40.  Below is a link 
that shows my everyday kit.  Now you have to remember that I am a woman, and as 
such, I've had to find a way to combine a purse and a camera kit.  I start with 
the Domke F-5XB.  The link below shows what I can carry in the bag as a purse 
and a camera bag.  I even show a photo depicting total weight.  

Now, as I said this is an everyday kit, which I virtually always have with 
me--even if I don't shoot anything that day.  I did add the DA 21mm for the 
purposes of this demonstration, but normally I would only carry one lens 
mounted on the camera.  Since I got my FA 50 back from repairs, I have that 
mounted.  With the DA 40, you'd even have a lot more room in this bag, and the 
bag would be lighter.

Now the gender thing is important because men usually carry wallets in back 
pants pockets and maybe phones in a shirt pocket, habits which would actually 
leave you more room in the bag.  I normally have my keys in my front jeans 
pocket, but I put them in the bag for demonstration purposes.

As I said this is an everyday bag, but if I was really restricted for travel, 
this is the kit I would carry:  50mm  21mm (a pared down long and wide combo). 
 When I travel for pleasure, I usually always take the DA* 50-135mm, so I use a 
different bag.  But this past year, I've had to travel for work, and I used 
this kit set-up.

Clearly, one good Fujiesque camera would be less gear and lighter; this kit 
won't beat that, and I do appreciate the point that even a kit like this can be

p.s.  I just weighed the K5 with the FA 50mm, and it came in at 2 and 1/4 
pounds--nearly half the weight of the entire kit.   The K5 with the DA 40 
mounted weighs nearly 2 pounds, about a 1/4 pound less.  The body of the K5 
weighs 1 and 3/4 pounds.  And interestingly, the extra battery in my plastic 
bag weighs in at about a 1/4 pound.

I keep lusting after a new camera, particularly those Fuji's after
seeing Doug's stuff and reading Cotty.
But the K-5 and K-5IIs are so good...
I grabbed a white K-01 as they were closing out.
It's actually surprisingly good with a tiny lens, but not so small.
It rides around in the car with me now.
The K-5 (or IIs) with a 31, 20, or 55 are what I carry now.
Hard to beat.

That should never have happened - there's not that much vibration from
the garbage grinder. The manufacturer should be willing to replace the
sink. Repairs on a crack like that are just a stop-gap measure. Is the
sink Swanstone or Corian?
