On that note, and tuning in with the cellphone theme here, I recently
purchased an app for my phone that, provided you cover the lens with
duct tape, will turn your phone into a quite decent dosimeter.

Apparently it utilises the same effect that had me seriously scared some
six years ago, when I discovered odd streaks of seemingly glowing sensor
dust in long exposure shots with the 645D. And when I looked closer I
found similar black streaks too. Not your ordinary hot pixel, although
some were just dots, one or two pixels wide. And not your ordinary dust
either, as some drew regular spiralling patterns.

In the 645D case, the sensor was just picking up backscatter of cosmic
rays, shattered and bounced by the Earth's crust; which neatly explained
the black streaks as subtracted noise during dark-framing.

The app, however, cranks up the ISO to some unknown overdrive and look
specifically for trails made by alpha and beta particles. Thought that
was pretty neat.

And since there is a known area of Thorium-containing ore an hour's
drive from here, I might now go looking. Duct tape at the ready. :-)

With the Plus iPhones since the 7 you get two front lenses, but of course you
know that. If I had a Plus I wouldn’t need Moment’s telephoto lens, but that
big a phone. Is lack of room the reason they’re not putting two lenses on the
basic model?

Yes, same here. I'd love to try one of these mounting rigs with my Leica R
lenses. They have such smooth focusing action, and most are not overly large or
heavy.

I bought a RYLO 360° action camera a few months back ... I've only played with
it a bit as yet, but I think there are some great possibilities between the
iPhone and the RYLO for motion fun. :-)

A friend who was a huge Canon pro gear fan has all but stopped using his Canon
gear entirely now, using the Momentist accessory lenses on his iPhone. The
quality of his photographs has, if anything, improved ... probably since he

It seems well worth the money to buy a case and a couple of their lenses!

Last fall, on a trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway, I ended up without a way to
recharge my camera batteries, and relied on my iPhone 6s exclusively for at
least half of the trip. When I viewed the images on the phone, I was not
impressed. When I got them into Lightroom I definitely was.

I'm just back from a month in Big Bend National Park. Again, a new battery
charger for my Fuji XM1 failed. This time I had my Fuji X-Q1 compact camera as
well as my iPhone. In my unsophisticated opinion, the X-Q1 gave me as good as I
would’ve got with the X-M1, plus I could zoom my shots. (My only lens for the
X-M1 is a 27/2.8.) And again I was impressed with the images I got with the
phone. Not only sharp, but throughout an unexpected depth of field.

My only complaint about the phone is the focal length/angle of view. (Well, and
a view finder, but ain’t gonna happen). I wanted something longer and narrower.
After checking out this thread I went looking on the web and found this.
It requires the use of their
phone case, but the case looks a lot like the simple case I have on the phone
now, with the ability to fasten a lens to the phone. Also a wrist or neck
strap, another thing for which I’ve wished. Haven’t read any reviews, but I
will be.

They have lots of other neat products, too, especially for smartphone
videographers. Their battery phone case for iPhone 7 and up has a dedicated
shutter button.

I’ve been contemplating some camera and lens purchases. I think I’m gonna hold
off to see how things go with more intentional use of the phone as a camera.
The possibility of becoming a phone-only photographer—to the extent that I can
call myself a photographer—is actually starting to become attractive. Suits my
minimilist tastes.

Larry,

Actually, Samsung does that with a "dual-camera" setup, - where they
realize a "portrait" mode. It's actually quite good, - I saw one just two
days ago, when a hair master took a few photos of the customer. It
minimizes or even eliminates that wide-lens-selfie effect, and also blurs

It is a classic case of a solution in search of a problem.

That being said, the sensors in phones are getting surprisingly good
these days, outperforming a lot of classic film cameras. It also has the
advantage of getting the photos directly to most folks primary means of
communication.

I've also heard quite a few people wishing they had better lenses for
their phone cameras. If the problem is wanting to use old lenses you
have lying around this is probably less expensive than a dedicated
mirrorless camera and adapters.

One question is whether they also do something optically to correct for
the crop factor.
