Re: An observation re Pentax for sale
Tom, your website is fantastic! Your work is beautiful! Very contemporary and classic... To answer your question - QLD is short for Queensland, the sunny state that I live in in Australia. You know NY is to New York... lol. Also, I have never seen a proof magazine offered at any of the Australian labs that I deal with however I can see how it would work, and I think that most people would love to have them like that to keep. Might look into it further. Thanks for the "food for thought". tan.x. - Original Message - From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, November 28, 2003 1:33 PM Subject: RE: An observation re Pentax for sale > > -Original Message- > > From: Tanya Mayer - Photographic Artist > > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > > > My main stumbling block is the fact that I am in the > > country and country > > people tend to like things > > "on paper". Re: Pentax z-1 SILVER special edition on Ebay!!!
Thanks Ryan! It is bloody hot up here - bikini and sarong weather that is for sure. Not like the ice and snow most of the other PDML'ers would be having right now! As for the commuting, I have worked out that just the flights I already have booked for next year will be enough to get me a free return flight to Brissy courtesy of frequent flyer points! Actually, I have been considering doing this even with film - just getting the negs processed and offering the scans on cd as proofs. Not sure that it will always work around here though - as I said not everyone has computers, and even less have internet access. Yep, and that's why I am travelling to Brisbane so frequently (14 hour drive or 2 hour flight), as down there people are much more willing to pay me decent money. I think that here in my home town, people don't value my work as much due to me being a "local", but it seems that the further away people are, the more they appreciate what I do! > > -Original Message- > > From: Tanya Mayer Photography [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > > > Tom, your website is fantastic! Re: Show and Tell - AF 50mm f1.7...
Thanks heaps for your comments guys! Cory, it is funny you should say that actually! I was going to post yesterday, when Herb etc were debating about PDML'ers who don't shoot enough etc. Currently,I shoot about 20-30 rolls per week. Of this, 1-2 is "just for fun", 15-20 are for work, and on average, I would shoot at least 2-3 rolls per week of my kids!! VERY expensive indeed. The girls at the local lab (where I send my personal stuff, not work) just roll their eyes in exasperation when i arrive there a couple of times a week and dump a handful of film on their counter! Mind you, the kids are obviously very used to it. My 5yo was making a sandwich today and came in holding up a piece of cheese. He said "mummy, i don't think you've taken a photo of me with a piece of cheese ever". H, I was like, "ummm, you don't need to have a photo of EVERYTHING that you do matey." To which he answered "well, you take a photo of me doing everything else, and i eat cheese EVERY day on my sandwich so i thought you'd like a photo of it too..." Plus, he told his teacher the other day, when asked about what "mummies do" in the home (they were learning about gender roles etc", and of course his answer was "mummies give cuddles, and they read stories, and they cook yummy jam drops (a cookie that i bake him)... oh, and they take photos of EVERYTHING i do" (apparently, he "rolled" his eyes whilst making the comment!). So, yep, having kids sure does keep the photography bank in the red, BUT it makes for lots of practice, and many GREAT memories to show them when they grow up. Sylwek said: "Beautifull children and shots Tanya! Gotta think about at least one of this small gizmos :-) Just another reason to take more and more photos :-)" Sylwek, not sure if the "small gizmos" you were referring to were my kids or the little 50mm lens that I used, but either way, they are both great to play with! lol. David, i'd love to see some pics of your little miracle! congratulations on his arrival! he is getting to a lovely age, plenty of cute smiles to photograph, and once he is sitting on his own, it makes life alot easier too! Bruce, it is a nice light lens, and great focal length. Probably wouldn't be able to use it for shooting kids other than my own though as it distracts them too much when you get that close to them, and can be difficult to get natural expressions. Will keep using my 135mm I think, but for my kids they beg me to take their photos and the closer the better! tan.x. - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, November 29, 2003 10:45 PM Subject: Re: Show and Tell - AF 50mm f1.7... > I can tell you from experience Sylwek, having your own bundle of joy to > photograph whenever you want is MUCH MUCH more expensive than any of the > current digital SLRs. Ok, well not ALWAYS, but generally. I like to shoot my portraiture with a "fashion" angle, rather than straight portraiture, so I am usually trying to bump up the contrast and saturation, iykwim? I love this lens (well, I THINK it is the same one). I smashed it on my camera a couple of weeks ago, and was most happy to find out today that it is fixable. It will cost me au$120, which I am STOKED about, I thought it would cost me at least double that IF it was even able to be salvaged... Pentax 28-105mm FA powerzoom
Question - I just bought this lens, the Pentax 28-105mm FA powerzoom f4-f5.6 (from ebay, for like au$150!!!). It is in PERFECT condition and I am very happy with my purchase. Course I don't use the powerzoom crap, but the lens itself is great. I also got a very pleasant surprise, when I discovered that at the 105mm end, it is extremely close focusing. Almost to the point of being macro? Boz's site and the lens itself, say that it goes to .43mm focussing distance, but I am getting into even closer ranges with the lens spinning around to show a little flower symbol (if this makes any sense), that I have always taken to indicate a macro function? I know this might all sound very rudimentary to you guys and gals, but until now I have only ever had a collection of manual focus Pentax lenses and all of my AF stuff has been third party. As this lens was purchased second-hand, I don't have a manual to go by. Does anyone else have this lens and could they shed some light on this for me? I have found so far that it is extremely sharp and I really love it. Does anyone know of any problems etc that I should be aware of when shooting with it? Many thanks, tan.

Anyways, light was running out, the kids were all bloody late (little brats!), and I was RUSHING to get them all through. So, I was running across a road when I tripped, dropped everything I was carrying and then turned to watch the next passing car run over everything that I was carrying! Aargh! So just WHAT was I carrying? Well, it was a (very poorly made) Sigma EF430st flashgun, three rolls of NPH400, a Pentax Pz-20, and a Tamron 28-200mm lens (the same one that shel's friend is selling). Combined, this was my favourite set up for shooting portraits! Ok, so of course I had backup gear, and went ahead with the job no problems (although with my hands shaking!). I was very lucky, cause looking back it most easily could have been MYSELF that got collected by the car. Anyways, I had prompt flash backs of the PZ-1P that I "threw" over a cliff a few years back (anyone remember that? Stan saved my butt on that one...), and which I never did replace. For some reason, that I can't put my finger on, I have since come to LOVE the Pz-20 body, and have 3 (well, 2 and one smashed one!) of them, and think I will stick with them. They do everything that I have come to need. > > Of course, everything WAS insured (not that I would get much back, cause it was all used gear), BUT decided against claiming them due to the time factor involved. I would need to source 3 or 4 quotes and then send them to my insurance company etc, because of course there isn't an agent here in my town. To put it into perspective, a gecko crawled into my power supply on > my pc last year and it took me 6 months to get another one! > > Sooo, basically, my *istD "fund" has disappeared for now, as over the past three weeks, I have enabled myself with the following items: another Pz-20, Pentax FA 28-105mm lens, Pentax FA 50mm f1.7mm lens, 360fgz flashgun. And whilst I was at it, I went a bit mad and also bought an Incablitz flashmeter, Lowepro Nova 5 Camera Bag, SLS 160ws monolight (300 effective ws), light stand, softbox, umbrella, carry bag. Phew! Of course, I am well aware that what I have spent over the past few weeks, could very well have purchased my *istD outright, BUT I am intending of going down the "shoot digital have film backup" path, so want to get that side of things sorted out too. > > I am now at a point where I am quite confident and comfortable in my "collection" of equipment that I can offer consistent results to my clients. I do OF COURSE, still want to go digital, but that won't happen until the New Year now... > > William, I already scan most of my work, and ftp (upload) it to my lab where they print just as they would if I were shooting digital. As they are a Pro lab, the turn around time is generally about 3-5 days, which would only differ by a day or so if I had actually hand delivered it/picked it up myself, so I am happy with that side of things. They also do a fantastic job. For Aussie members, the lab's website is www.imt.net.au if anyone wants to check it out. The delay for me is that I have to send the film off to be processed first, before I can get to work on it. That adds another 3-5 days, sometimes more, to the turn around. > > Moral of the story is that when I do get my *istD that side of things won't really change where my lab is concerned, BUT I won't have to a) mail order film (as no-one locally stocks any Pro films), and b) won't have to send film off to be processed. The trips to Brisbane are for work/bookings. I am travelling there to shoot weddings, and couldn't possibly comprehend travelling there for lab stuff (it is a 14 hour drive!). I welcome the Brisbane trips as they give me the chance to display a larger variety of backdrops and locations on my website and also give me a great break for a day or two from my kids! lol. > > Ok, so sorry that was all so long winded, just wanted to fill you all in on my "butter fingers" and say thanks for all of your encouraging comments... > > tan. >

Re: *ist D - with no lens?!?
Another question that I have, and I apologise if this sounds extremely "dumb" BUT, if the effective focal length of the *istD is 1.5times the focal length of the same lenses on a film body, does this mean that the f-stops are also 1.5 times? ie. If I used my FA 50mm f1.7 on the *istD, would this effectively become an "FA 75mm f2.5" and would the FA 28-105mm f4-5.6 become a "42-158mm f6-8.4", cause if so, that would suck majorly. (sorry, I'll write the words "lollipop" and "straw" here so that I don't get into trouble for using the S word out of context! lol). And all of my lenses would then become very slowww. OR, does it only affect the focal length? Anyone able to get this through my thick skull? lol. tan. - Original Message - From: "Tanya Mayer Photography" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 10:26 AM Subject: *ist D - with no lens?!? > Hi all, I have just found an Aussie site where I can purchase the *istD > WITHOUT a lens! Re: Pentax 28-105mm FA powerzoom
Stan! I DID check your website, and that is WHY I purchased it! . OT - your website seems to be down right at the moment, or is it just at my end? Thanks heaps for your comments, I mainly purchased this lens to "get me through" until I got my Tamron 28-200mm back, BUT I now think it will be my primary portrait lens, as I can use it with the 360fgz without having to worry about going "over" the zoom distance, AND it works perfectly with the Mz-6/ZX-L too. S, the softness at the 28mm end isn't really an issue for me, as I will generally always be shooting at 85-105mm. BUT, it is a shame that at f5.6 it is a little slow. When I bid on this lens, there was also an FA 100mm f2.8 macro being auctioned. I have wanted THAT particular lens for SO long and I was SO excited to see it, BUT it ended up going for like $650 and I can buy one new for $850 so I let it go and went with this one instead. Still dreaming of the 100mm though! Until I can afford it the Tamron 135mm f2.5 will suffice (although it doesn't have macro capabilities). What does "psuedo" macro mean? And how exactly does it work? tan. - Original Message - From: "Stan Halpin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 10:24 AM Subject: Re: Pentax 28-105mm FA powerzoom > on 12/02/03 6:04 PM, Tanya Mayer Photography at [EMAIL PROTECTED] > wrote: > > > Question - I just bought this lens, the Pentax 28-105mm FA powerzoom f4-f5.6 > > (from ebay, for like au$150!!!). Mike, you are correct, it DOES way a ton! lol. BUT, I have a smaller bag that I use for weddings etc. I just purchased the Nova 5 so that I can fill it with most of my gear and take in on flights as "carry on luggage". No matter how secure the case (Pelikan, Storm etc), I don't trust baggage handlers at airports and have heard too many stories of entire suitcases etc being stolen recently. Thanks Stan! So I bought quite wisely then! lol. I am still interested in this whole macro thingy. OT- tom, are you shooting your weddings exclusively with the *istD, or are you using another digital slr of some description? Also, you said "I regularly make 16x20's from 6 megs, and I'm always astonished at how good they look. I like them better than most of the prints I got from my 645, and that includes the ones I printed myself." The guy at the lab that is trying to get me to take my work to them, seems to think exactly the same. In fact he was trying to get me to buy the Minolta Dimage A1, which is only 5megs claiming that its results were better than any digital slr on the market! I too, have been "holding out" and hoping for a Pentax 10megapixel slr, but I am interested to hear your thoughts on the abilities of only 6. If what you are saying is true (about the 16x20s), then there is really no reason (except for $$$) for me NOT to convert to the *istD ASAP! tan. - Original Message - From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 2:23 PM Subject: RE: *istD - Hm > > -Original Message- > > From: Bob Rapp [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > > > > > - Original Message - > > From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > > > > Yes, they would. Yeah, but who exactly does the GST go to? Re: *ist D - with no lens?!?
Hmmm, I am SLOWLY getting there William. My "rates" are slowly climbing, but I know for a fact that I am still the cheapest in the area by hundreds of $$$. As I said in a post yesterday, I still find myself apologising to people regularly for "being so expensive" and trying to justify the costs to them. Also, I tend to buckle when under pressure and like to make myself available to everyone regardless of their budget. I did a wedding just two weeks ago for $700. *eek*, of which, I made a grand total of $0. BUT, the couple were so happy with their pics that they have since come back and ordered double that in enlargements and gifts for their family, so I think that it does pay in the long run to be within peoples reach. OTH, I just took a booking from a lady in Brisbane, who was so excited after seeing my website that she phone me and said "i don't care what you cost, I want you and only you, and I want the works". She then offered to pay for me to stay at the Hilton Hotel in Brisbane! Woohoo, luxury baby, and not a smelly nappy in miles!! I'd do the bloody wedding for free, just to get an all expenses paid trip to BrisVegas... In regards to the *ist D - it seems that with my line up of lenses, it would probably be unwise to NOT purchase the 18-35mm, even though I don't go wide angle very often. So, I will keep my ear to the ground and see what becomes available after Christmas. Still planning on leasing at this stage though... tan. - Original Message - From: "William Robb" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 1:55 PM Subject: Re: *ist D - with no lens?!? > > - Original Message - > From: "Tanya Mayer Photography" > Subject: *ist D - with no lens?!? > > > Question to all of you who have it already - this is my collection of > > lenses - > > > > - Tamron Adaptall (manual focus) 135mm f2.5 (my all time favourite > lens!!), > > - Tamron AF 28-200mm Aspherical, > > - Pentax 28-105mm FA powerzoom, > > - Pentax 50mm f1.7 FA, > > - Pentax A 70-210mm macro (thanks Stan!!), > > - Sigma 35-80mm f4-5.6 AL (came on my MZ-6/ZX-L body). > > > > Ok, so my question is - how will this > > collection of lenses go with the *istD? Re: Re[2]: Freaky price for *ist D
Bruce, I too have purchased from Adorama and had no problems, which is why I was confident to post their price here on list. I have also purchased from Keh.com and B&H, and have never had problems with either (and come to think of it, never had to pay GST either!). Of course, it is pretty scary though when you do read the Photo.net reviews (and I have always done this in the past) that Ryan posted, BUT if you put it into perspective - these places are HUGE and probably do like 200 mail orders per day, so if these reviews are anything to go buy, in reality the problematic transactions are really a very small percentage of their overall custom. Mind you, it still pays to be wary of these things. In regards to Keh.com - it seems that they don't seem to be stocking many of the latest equipment available. They don't list the *istD on their site. I purchased something very small from them like 2 years ago - (I think it was a hotshoe slave module), as a bit of a "test" run. Well, even with me being in Australia, I received the package within a week of my purchase, and to this day, continue to receive their catalogue in the mail every couple of months. I was really impressed with their service and wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again - it is a shame that they don't seem to be offering the stuff that I am after though! tan. - Original Message - From: "Bruce Dayton" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Ryan Lee" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 6:24 PM Subject: Re[2]: Freaky price for *ist D > Hello Ryan, > > I have to say that I have had very good luck with Adorama. Re: Re[2]: Freaky price for *ist D
Ryan, definitely try www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au or www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au . I have purchased from both and have always been extremely happy. Dirt Cheap Cameras are particularly great - I ordered my 360fgz from them and although it was out of stock at the time, I still had it at my post office within 7 days of my phone call (it wasn't listed on their website), AND the added bonus was that they deliver COD meaning no credit card fees. Both of these sites have the absolute CHEAPEST equipment I have found ANYWHERE, and have always beaten Photocontinental hands down. Also, when it comes to scanners/printers/software etc, be sure to try www.estore.com.au they are fantastic too! With overseas transactions, I DO prefer B&H as well, but as I said in my last post, I have always been really happy with KEH.com too. tan. - Original Message - From: "Ryan Lee" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 7:50 PM Subject: Re: Re[2]: Freaky price for *ist D > Hey Bruce.. > Noted :) I was just comparing the good/bad reviews for Adorama and B&H > http://www.photo.net/neighbor/one-subcategory?id=2 and though I haven't used > either, I think I'd feel slightly safer ordering from B&H (posting to > Australia). Re: Pentax z-1 SILVER special edition on Ebay!!!
Sounds GREAT John! So far, I know for sure that I will be there on Friday 27 Feb in the morning, but busy all day. Shooting wedding all day Saturday 28 Feb at Bundaleer Rainforest Gardens, in Brookfield. Flying back Sunday afternoon, so maybe we can do something on the Sunday? Also, I will then be down there on Friday 12 March, free that day. Shooting wedding all day Saturday 13 March at Sandgate. Flying back early Sunday morning to organise hubby's surprise 30th that night. So, maybe we could get together on the Friday - except you guys will probably all be working? There are more dates later in the year (June, August, September), but those are the ones that I have booked flights for so far. tan. - Original Message - From: "John Coyle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, November 29, 2003 9:25 AM Subject: Re: Pentax z-1 SILVER special edition on Ebay!!! > Tanya, just let us know when you're in town and we'll see what we can do > about a BVPDML (BrisVegas PDML). Re: *ist D - with no lens?!?
John, even better, if you package up the manual/boxes/receipts and MAIL them to yourself in Australia, you can carry the camera in your luggage without having to declare it at all. If they ask, just say that it is yours and that you took it with you in the first place. I did this when I went to Hong Kong and came back with a video camera and Nintendo Game Boy (for my little brother!)... tan. - Original Message - From: "John Coyle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 5:46 PM Subject: Re: *ist D - with no lens?!? > Tanya, the GST on imports works like the old Import Taxes. Re: Aussie GST (Re: *ist D - with no lens?!?)
LOL! Ryan, this would be all well and good, except, I am pretty sure that apples, being fresh produce are in fact GST Free! hehe... Of course, I am only joking around, and I do understand your explanation of it all... I would also be eager to hear what comes of your Hong Kong guy... Now as for your "what tha?!" How funny that you should use that phrase as my 3yo has just this week started saying it, and it is SO hilarious. He always manages to use it in the right context and even throws his hands up in the air. I have no idea how he ever managed to see Rove, but he does tend to sneak out of his bed at night, so there is the possibility that he was watching over my shoulder one night. As for the Ambulance Levy - do you mean the one that it now in our Electricity account? That is just our normal QLD Ambulance cover, meaning that you no longer have to subscribe and that every QLD'er is automatically covered by it. ie whoever is in your house is covered by your elect. bill. I am PRETTY sure this is the way it works, but don't take it as gospel... tan. - Original Message - From: "Ryan Lee" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2003 5:23 PM Subject: Aussie GST (Re: *ist D - with no lens?!?) > Hey Tan! > Well I'm not exactly sure, but in my (very possibly flawed) logic, I'll try > to work it out... > > As I understand it, GST here is what we (Eaters) pay the govt for the right > to eat an apple in Australia. > > Businesses pay GST for 10 apples, and they claim back this GST (tax credit) > for 10 apples when they sell them (because they are not the Eaters). > If they don't sell the apples, they don't claim the tax credits because then > they are the Eaters. > > If you buy an apple from Applerama in the states, you get charged because > you are then assumed to be: > a) The business- in which case you get charged GST, but can sell the apple > and claim tax credits > b) The Eater- in which case you pay the GST (the right to eat the apple in > Australia), and have an American apple. > > That's how I understand it more or less.. Re: Re[2]: Freaky price for *ist D
Ryan, I had never seen the shop.centre site before, and I am quite impressed. I have bookmarked it and will be sure to check it regularly - and, like you said, it has the added advantage of selling all manner of stuff, not just camera gear... With regards to dirtcheap - they don't have the 360fgz on their site, you have to ring them. I purchased mine from them for $473 including all postage costs. Photocontinental had it for $479 PLUS postage and it was out of stock for at least 10 days - hence my decision to go with dirtcheap. But boy did you get a bargain - only 200 bucks! Not sure about their other prices, but when i bought my MZ-6, they were the cheapest by far. I think they were like $100 cheaper than their nearest competitor. I have some catalogue work (kids clothing) coming up, and I too need to get some new polarisers, so I would be interested to hear how you go with yours... Re: Laptop suggestions
Paul, there are many laptop bargains to be had on Ebay!! I have been watching them for a month or two now, and as soon as I get my *istD, an Ebay laptop is my next planned purchase. Most come with warranty if you buy from the right seller, but be sure to check that they come with working batteries as alot don't. I'm not looking for anything majorly fast - I will mainly want it for checking emails whilst I am away and for presenting my digital proofs to my clients. Somebody mentioned yesterday about a wedding that they went to where the guests were able to view the photos - well, that is my plan. I will also be buying a data projector and intend on running a slideshow at my client's wedding receptions with their proofs, if they would like it. I recently did this for a friend whereby I shot their ceremony, ran to a one hour lab (the wedding was in a bigger town), had the film printed and scanned and then I presented them as a slideshow for their wedding gift at their reception. Everyone was totally blown away, and the look on their faces was truly priceless. I would so love to be able to do this for all of my wedding clients on their special day, and this is one of my MAJOR motivations for buying the *ist D. As for a laptop, I only need it to be able to run powerpoint and check my emails really, so I'm only going to buy something around the AUD$600 mark. I have been following the Ebay auctions closely and have found that for this price, I should be able to get one with 256mb RAM, 58k modem, cd-rom, approx.500mhz cpu, and around 5-10gb harddrive. Pretty much all of them have USB connections now. The size/quality of the screen isn't really an issue as most of my stuff will be projected onto a wall/larger screen, so I haven't really researched that side completely... tan. - Original Message - From: "Paul Eriksson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2003 7:47 AM Subject: Laptop suggestions In January I'm going on a extended phototrip and need som memory storage. The computer will be used both as storage and editing. What about memory, harddrive size, processor, connections(USB, Firewire, etc) the screen? Any suggestions are very wellcome. By the way, my target price would be in the $1200-1500 range, cheaper if possible. Archiving stuff...
Ok, so another question (full of them aren't i?!) - the recent increase in my workload, has also brought about another issue for me - that of storage. I am wanting to adopt a fail proof way of filing and storing negatives and cds so that they are a) easily accessible b) don't take up too much room c) secure from grubby little 1 year old fingers d) easy to refer to with regards to client orders etc. Would be most interested to hear what systems any of you guys and girls have in place for filing and archiving your negs/digital images... tan.

Re: *ist D - with no lens?!?
Ok, s, what is the image quality like on these lenses? for eg, if I use say my 70-210mm f4 at the 210mm focal length, combined with a 2 x teleconverter, that would make it approximately a 400mm focal length, and then on the *ist D, it would be 1.5 times that - which would be a grand total of 600mm!! Wow, I could get a job as paparazzi with a setup like that Not really my thing, but hey, you know Prince Harry is currently staying at a cattle station only a couple of hours from here, could be worth big bucks! hehe. *winks* Of course, not much point without the *ist D though... lol tan. - Original Message - From: "Butch Black" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2003 1:41 AM Subject: Re: *ist D - with no lens?!? Hi Tan; I subscribe via the digest, so if this has been answered already sorry for the redundancy. The multiplier factor applies only to the focal length, not the aperture. The area that the sensor takes up is about ½ the size of a 35mm film frame, hence the multiplier factor. Aperture is a function of the size of the opening in relation to the actual focal length of the lens. For instance, the physical size of the aperture opening on a 200mm lens at f4 will be larger then f4 on a 50mm lens, but both will let the same amount of light in. Where the multiplier factor does not change the lens itself, it only designates a "cropping factor" compared to 35mm, therefore, no change in aperture. I had a lovely surprise this morning! My kids and hubby woke me with a chocolate (lopsided! lol) cake, complete with 27 glowing candles, and some loveheart shaped balloons, whilst performing a very off-key rendition of "happy birthday to you". My one year old then proceeded to sit on the cake and mash the icing all over my bed! lol. I can now officially say that I a in my "late" twenties, gawd I feel old, but at least now I fit in with you lot a bit better! lol. ;-) tan.

Re: Archiving stuff...
Thankyou to everyone who has responded to this, you have all helped me out no -end. Tom, I was most interested to see your "bag" system. I do exactly the same, but using large A4 sized envelopes. So, I must be on the right track somewhere. I also like Leon's idea of the database and also the easy numbering system suggested by Bob. I already have a large filing cabinet and this is where I place each clients envelope (in alphabetical order), I also have a checklist attached to the wall above the cabinet that I check off before I file the envelope to ensure that everything is in there. BUT, the filing cabinet is already becoming too small so I was considering moving on to "better" things, but as I seem to be "on par" with the system that I am already developing I think I'll just install a couple of small changes and continue on my merry way... Tom, thanks particularly for taking the time to post a pic of your system. I really do appreciate your help. I totally "hear" you about the confusion with order forms/contracts etc, that is exactly why I posted my question as I have found myself really swamped by this type of thing in the past few days as work continues to escalate. Many thanks again guys, tan. - Original Message - From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2003 10:27 AM Subject: RE: Archiving stuff... > > -Original Message- > > From: Tanya Mayer Photography [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > > > Ok, so another question (full of them aren't i?!) - the > > recent increase in > > my workload, has also brought about another issue for me - > > that of storage. > > I am wanting to adopt a fail proof way of filing and > > storing negatives and > > cds so that they are a) easily accessible b) don't take up > > too much room c) > > secure from grubby little 1 year old fingers d) easy > > to refer to with > > regards to client orders etc. > > I wrestled with this one for a while. Re: Archiving stuff...
me too tom, and that is exactly the way i am marketing my business, as you will see on my website. I am trying to cover their entire lives as one "story" eg. engagement portraits, wedding portraiture, pregnancy, new baby, family portrait etc. Here is the (very rough) start of one that I just put up yesterday... And I have a couple more to add in the next week or so http://www.tanyamayer.com/sally.html Obviously, I am totally going for the "human nature", "emotion", "cutesy" and "aw" side of things in my marketing, hence the "Imagery With Heart" slogan that I've devised. It is true though, as I do LOVE my work and put alot of love INTO my work, AND it SEEMS to be WORKING - I too, am having alot of return business... I know it is all very "girly" but I guess that is just moi... Does any of that makes sense to you grumpy old men out there? hehe tan. - Original Message - From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 5:17 AM Subject: RE: Archiving stuff... > > -Original Message- > > From: Christian [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > > > > > - Original Message - > > From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > > > > I do get return business > > > tv > > > > What does that tell you about the sanctity of marriage in > > America? Re: Silly Digital Survey
Dave said: "Someday we might see ourselves having to order film from places like B&H because finding a good selection if any downtown might be tough. And we might become dependent on mail order processing, which for the most part is the way slides always have been. But I doubt we will see film literally disappear. I'm considering trying to process color negatives at home. But that part only and then scan the negs as usual." Dave, you just explained my life, LITERALLY. I have to order all of my film from Photocontinental in Brisbane, which is a complete pain in the butt. I order propacks by the dozen, which means CONSTANT mail ordering, and BIG outlays of money at any one given time - a normal film order for me is in excess of au$300, and I do this at least once or twice per fortnight. It drives me completely in sane - particularly as I am a "touch and see" type of person and I like to be able to browse everything that is available to me, pick it up, turn it over etc, but with my film, I have to go by whatever the salesperson on the phone tries to tell me. It also means that I have to know at least 2 weeks in advance for all of my bookings to allow time for me to order film in specific to the job. The only film I can buy in town is Fuji Superior 100, 200 and 400, (which I have used MANY a time, when I have been "stuck"), Kodak Select Black and White (which I HATE), and the new Kodak High Definition (which only comes in equivalent to ISO 200 in Australia, I *think*). ALL of my processing is also mail order, which means it takes 2-3 weeks for my prints to come back from the time I sent them off. Just had a nice surprise this morning, got back some prints from a shoot I did on Frid. 21 Nov - exactly 2 weeks ago! Woohoo! That was QUICK by my standards. I too, have been considering processing my own colour negs at home, but have decided against standing there inhaling chemicals all day, and plus the *istD is imminent, so I won't NEED to worry about silly little things like film anymore! tan. - Original Message - From: "Dave Miers" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 5:25 AM Subject: Re: Silly Digital Survey > Someday we might see ourselves having to order film from places like B&H > because finding a good selection if any downtown might be tough. Re: Archiving stuff...
do you guys set up separate areas for different types of jobs? eg a "baby portrait" cabinet, a "wedding" cabinet etc. I am trying to think of the best way to be able to remember where to look for each file. I know that the suggestion has been made to use a database etc, and to file with a number system, but to be honest I am SO not a numbers type of person (as I am sure you have all guessed), and I think I would benefit more from actually sectioning off different spaces for different types of jobs. Just wondering if anyone else has worked this way and it it worked for them? tan. - Original Message - From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 5:04 AM Subject: RE: Archiving stuff... > > -Original Message- > > From: graywolf [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > > > As long as you are doing "people" photography filing by > > cutomer name is OK. LOL, Ann, I just found this on the net that is supposed to explain "keywords relating to sagittarians": "Expansive, cheerful, prolific, powerful, loud, noisy, fortunate, loyal, majestic, arrogant, masculine, religious, comfortable, enthusiastic, social, hunter, reckless, exuberant, verbose, counsellor, creative, honourable, idealistic, noble, ambitious, popular, warm, humorous, generous, excessive, tolerant, free, extravagant, philosopher, principled, optimistic, visionary, fanatical, successful, opportunist, jovial, sincere, honest, uncritical, creative yet sublime. Re: *istD Pixels Per Inch
graywolf, it depends how you are outputting them to your lab. if you are uploading via ftp or emailing, it may be beneficial due to file size to send as jpegs. Contradicting this is the software that my lab just adopted called "xsend" - very cool little program indeed. I upload as TIFF files and they go in just seconds. I sent off a 48mb file just yesterday, and using this software it went in under 1 minute, and I am only on a 128k ISDN connection! Previous to them using this software however, i used to have to send them as jpegs compressed to around 10, making an RGB 8x10 file only like 2.5mb. I promise you the quality most definitely DOES suffer... - Original Message - From: "Shel Belinkoff" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 9:22 AM Subject: Re: *istD Pixels Per Inch > Why the heck save to JPEG? Re: Archiving stuff...
not as yet, graywolf. just looked into it recently actually, and it is really hard to get accepted. To be an AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photographers), you have to been a proven full-time professional photographer for over 2 years, (or have completed a 4 year Bachelors degree in photography), and be nominated by another AIPP member, and THEN have references from two other AIPP members. It also costs a packet - like $500 per year! HOWEVER, they are looking at changing their acceptance requirements so that members may be accepted on approval of a portfolio - I am hoping that they do this, as although I have been WORKING as a photographer for around 3 years now, I have never been full-time, and probably never will be full-time for at least another 5 years when my kids are at school. When I say "full-time" I mean, shooting wise. I probably only actually shoot 2-3 times per week, and then a wedding most weekends. Most of my time is actually taken with post-production work, ordering, bookwork etc. Actually, that is an interesting point - how much time do you other Pro photographers actually spend taking photos per week? Anyways, I am hoping that they do change the AIPP requirements as being where I am, there are no other AIPP members within a 3-4 hour radius, and I would still like to join. The benefits and publicity that is given to the winners of their annual awards is fantastic and could set me up for a very long time to come, should I ever be lucky enough to win any. Plus, I just wanna put some letters after my name... tan. - Original Message - From: "graywolf" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 8:34 AM Subject: Re: Archiving stuff... > Hey, emotion is what sells. Re: Pentax 28-105mm FA powerzoom
Yeah John. This is why I love the Tamron 135mm f2.5 that I have. It is old and manual, and all metal, weighs a ton, but does some lovely things to skin, and skin tones whilst still appearing very sharp. Has great bokeh too. Only problem is that being 135mm, I am unable to use any of my flash guns with it in TTL mode (they all only zoom to 105mm), and manual flash photography is just one of the areas I know absolutely, (well, virtually) nothing about. I really do need to learn about this. I do know how to use the guide no. divided by distance to find f-stop equation, but this rarely suits me as I like to be able to choose my f-stop for depth of field control over exposure. I would be happy to use the Tamron exclusively if I could somehow find a way to use flash with it when needed, and still be able to choose my f-stops at will... tan. - Original Message - From: "John Coyle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 10:57 AM Subject: Re: Pentax 28-105mm FA powerzoom > Tanya, can't say that I have done too much genuine very-close-up shots with > this lens: about the closest was bloom on an African Tulip, where the area > framed was about 200x170mm. Re: Re[2]: card storage in the field
tom, i will shoot around 200-230 and deliver average of 200, sometimes 150-180 if they're on a budget... of which, an average of 30-40 are then chosen for their album, and they get to keep the rest of their proofs which are 5x7s, UNLESS they have chosen a "digital" package whereby they receive their proofs on cd only, and just get the prints of their chosen shots for their album. sorry if i sound naive, but is that bad/weird? i thought that was normal. in fact, i mentioned yesterday i think, about my "hit and miss" rate, and like i said, it IS getting better, but embarrassingly (and NO-ONE laugh!), i still have about 30-40 of what i call "rejects" per wedding that the couple will never see - eg eyes closed, underexposed, faces too shiny etc actually it is funny you should say that about the makeup as it is true! if i am doing their makeup, it is a sacrifice that they make that i generally can't shoot the groom's preparations as well, obviously, i can't be in two places at once. fine by me though, as i hate doing boring grooms by themselves! lol, at least AFTER the ceremony they have relaxed a bit, usually have a few beers under the belt and are more willing to do some fun and interesting stuff... tan. - Original Message - From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 5:33 PM Subject: RE: Re[2]: card storage in the field > > -Original Message- > > From: Tanya Mayer Photography [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > > > per wedding?!!?!? are you kidding me?!!?!?!? > > > > I shoot 150-200 USUALLY, up to 300 if it is a HUGE celebration... > > You're probably too busy doing eveyone's makeup and washing the limo. > > You shoot 200 frames total? Re: Re[2]: card storage in the field
Oh, just realised that you asked about time - well, generally, if i am doing makeup, i just spend the entire day with them - start at around 10am, finish faces by around say 2pm (if the wedding is at 3pm for eg), shoot bridal shots pre-ceremony, follow her to ceremony (or go ahead to shoot her arrival at church/ceremony location), shoot ceremony, go to a few different locations until we lose light and then just stay with them until usually around the 7pm-8pm mark at which time I will do a mockup of the cake/waltz having filled my time since their arrival at the reception with still-lifes of the cake/bouquets/reception venue/table settings etc. Sooo, I guess, if you count the hours, it is an average of around 10 hours for a full wedding, and let me tell you, the smells of the yummy food at the reception make sure that I am generally STARVING by the end of it! Is this a "normal" setup? If I offer anything less, I find myself apologising as they demand "more". I have even had them ask me to stay until they leave the reception which is usually around midnight. I have never done this, but I have certainly considered it after feeling "bad" that I wasn't giving them a proper service... Re: Re[2]: card storage in the field
tom (and anyone else who is following this thread!) - with regards to this para. " Hmm. I throw out 2/3 of what I shoot, but I wouldn't call them crap. Most of them are dups, and I pick the best of a set. I shot about 10 frames to get these 3: http://www.bigdayphoto.com/boland/4462.htm http://www.bigdayphoto.com/boland/4463.htm http://www.bigdayphoto.com/boland/4464.htm Are the other 7 frames crap? Well, some of them were, but most of them were just "also-rans". I got to pic the best 3 out 10." Those are cool shots, I'll bet that she'll love them! BUT, I think it was Bruce(?) who posted about the different markets etc? I went and looked at the whole album from that wedding, and your shots are sensational (i am totally humbled and feel that my "work" is positively amateur in comparison to yours and also Bruces wedding work...) BTW, in regards to not calling the "outakes" crap, well, most of mine seriously are, and I like to remind myself of this so that I continue to improve and never get to a point where I think I am so good that I never take a crap shot, iykwim? The way I refer to them in a "nicer" context are as "rejects" or "out-takes"... Well, the whole photojournalistic thing hasn't reallly "caught on" in these parts, and to most of my couples here, they would be disappointed if I didn't give them 2/3 of their collection as "posed" shots. This takes ALOT of time to set up - I guess this is why I am only able to produce, at most 300 shots per wedding. When I say "posed" shots, I don't mean boring old stand in a line and smile, but rather creatively posed, such as those that I posted on the grayscale thread. Often, my "candid" shots are completely set up to look just like that. For example THIS one, which is one of my alltime favourite wedding photos that I have ever taken: http://www.tanyamayer.com/themarriage/hanrahankissbw.jpg Here is a link to an (almost complete - not all of the family and still-life shots are here) wedding from last weekend... This one was a garden ceremony, as most of mine in this region are... Sorry, if they look scrappy, they are low res and not colour corrected, this is just a proofing page for the couples family... oh, you'll need the username - tmp and the password - weddings. http://www.tanyamayer.com/weddinggalleriesprivate/anderson/ See how the style is so different? So, with that in mind, I find that I am able to still get good coverage with only 150-200 shots per wedding, and it also saves my clients money - which is a big thing where I am as we are in drought and most of the farmers on the land are barely making ends meet BTW, whilst you are all looking at that gallery, if anyone has the time, could you please have a look at the shots of the couple with the horse - any idea why my flash didn't fill the shadows on their faces? I was really close, shot with a 28mm and 50mm lens. I'm thinking it is because the flash has exposed for the white of the dress? But truly, I have no idea... Those shots look like absolute crap, and that is what I mean about me having a LOT to learn... Not only are the shadows really bad, major hotspots all over, but they are very poorly composed too. NOT one of my finest photographic moments there... I almost threw those in the trash can before even showing them to the couple, who ironically "love" them. There truly is no accounting for taste sometimes. AND, does anyone have any sure fire tips for preventing shine on faces from flash and reduce contrast for reception pics? No matter what bounce options, softboxes etc I have tried on my flash gun, I have never been able to find what I feel is a satisfactory result... what the bloody hell is a "triptych"?!?! (hope i didn't offend anyone by using the "h" word!) tan. - Original Message - From: "tom" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, December 06, 2003 5:02 AM Subject: RE: Re[2]: card storage in the field > > -Original Message- > > From: Tanya Mayer Photography [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > > Sometimes, I will get a really generous couple who > > *force* me to sit > > at one of their guests tables and eat a meal during the > > reception (which > > even though I am usually starving, I hate as it means I have to stay > > longer!)... > > I put it in my contract, they have to feed me and my assistant a hot > meal. > > My the time dinner rolls around I'll have been on my feet for 5 hours. > I need food or I'll get cranky. > > > I have never had a > > bride "demand" > > makeup, they just usually ask when booking me as a > > photographer "oh, can you > > do my face to?". > >

thanks for the advice mike! my business owes exactly ZERO dollars. I don't even have debtors accounts with my labs. I am still too small to do that, and actually it is a really safe way to run things. If my customers disappeared tomorrow, I would owe nothing and own everything. It can be a pain in that my clients have to pay me at the time of their sitting/when they place their orders rather than when their prints come back, BUT it does save alot of time trying to track people down for their money! Been thinking of taking out a loan for that *istD though! Re: Re[2]: card storage in the field
tom said: "Obviously I don't know your market, but I think to some extent is > depends on what you show them during your first meeting. I would be > surprised if there wasn't a market for it in Brisbane." you are totally correct - Brisbane is a different ball game - ALL they want are photojournalism and proofs on cd - two VERY different markets i am catering for, but at this stage, my local one is the main one... tom also said: "I suspect at some point you're going to have to make some tough > decisions. If you did 26 gigs this year, and have 18 lined up for next > year, I would suspect you're on track for 45 or 50 next year." bloody hell! (this is a very aussie expression for those of you who don't know and I say it ALL the time...) you think? i doubt that majorly, but if it did happen i would be :-) ! no way could i pull that many off by myself - the orders alone would have me in a flap. i'll see how i go for bookings by say late Feb, and i might have to seriously consider hiring an assistant if it looks like it is getting out of hand... BUT, like i said in an earlier post, i stil can't believe that people want to pay me to push a button, especially people from Brisbane, they have so many photographers to choose from down there... THEN tom said: "Maybe. Did you set any exposure compensation?" yep, i did, but not enough, obviously. i was starting to worry for a bit there that i had a sick flash, but everything since has been a-ok. " I like ceiling bounce for reception shots. Otherwise I set up room lights" I can't always use ceiling bounce due to too high ceilings/outside receptions. Not sure how to go about room lights - more i need to learn i guess! Oh, and at the beginning, tom said: "Oh, be quiet..." Which is exactly what I am going to do now that my kids have stopped throwing up. It is 9.33am and I am going to sleep after one very rough (and LONG!) night... Re: card storage in the field
Ok, with the date thing, it is time for me to come clean! Shel picked it up and so did dave (i think?) also. Here's what I told Shel about that "LOL! Shel, I've been sprung! I am very naughty, and I downloaded a trial version of WS FTP Pro, and this is what I use to upload stuff to my website. Only problem is that it expires after 30 days, so whenever I am working on my site, I set my PC clock back to early Oct, and bingo it works again! Only problem is (obviously), half the time, I forget to switch the date back. You are the second PDML'er to have noticed this! I really shouldn't be so stingy and should just buy the bloody program...! lol." So, sorry to be a pain about that mike, date is correct now, and if I remember to keep changing it (until i get off my butt and BUY the bloody software), it should be fine from now on in... Mike, you also said: "I _would_ say that, if you have to think of a loan for a £1000 piece of equipment at your level of turnover, you are charging seriously less than the market can stand." Firstly, in Oz it is au$3000 which is alot of money in these parts... BUT, also, yes I am not making a great deal for all of the work that I am putting in. Mainly because to date, most of my work is locally, and as I explained yesterday, we are in drought and there is very little disposable income in these parts. This will change in the coming months when I really begin to travel on a regular basis as I can charge alot more "down south" than I can here. Also, I have been currently charging "per roll", rather than a sitting fee and then selling prints. All of this will change very soon, and especially so when I get the *istD (or another Pentax DSLR if one is brought out that supersedes it on all levels). ALSO, I am still building my equipment cache and I am constantly spending basically all of my profits to do so. I am working from scratch. I have had no capital to begin my business with (being a stay at home mum), and every single thing I have purchased for my business has been paid for BY my business. This includes such things as website hosting, domain name, ISDN internet connection, business name registration, yellow pages listing, newspaper advertising, website listing subscriptions (such as www.weddingcentral.com.au) QuickBooks software, CD Burner etc. All of these things alone have been purchased in the past month, at a cost of over au$2500, and paid for BY nothing more than my photography income. I am sure you will agree, that although it is taking me some time to "get off the ground", I am doing it in a way that is secure for my family AND not impacting my family finance wise, and having 3 little kids and hubby that works his butt off, this is very important to us. Up until probably 2-3 months ago (a period of around 2 and a half years), I have been doing photography for people just as a "cash job" or "hobby" basis, it was only recently that I have set up as a legitimate business. Ok, so anyway, moral of the story is that no, i'm probably not charging enough, and no i'm not going to take out a loan for the *istD (that was a joke when I said that! lol), and it will probably take a couple of months for me to save for it (if i decide to purchase one, i am still considering leasing at this stage), BUT I am happy to be plodding along as i am, i am at a point at the moment where i still feel as though i am "holding the reins" and don't want to "step up" anything just yet. Remember, it has only been 3 and a half years since I purchased my first ever SLR camera, so I have been on a very steep learning curve, and will continue to be on one for a very long time, I would imagine! Mike also said : "I wouldn't presume to give advice to someone who is so blatantly successful." NO WAY would I say that I am "successful"! (although I know that you did say it tongue-in-cheek). See above comments... Sorry, i know i've gone off babbling again, but i hope it all makes sense, and PLEASE correct me if i am wrong! lol. tan. - Original Message ----- From: "mike wilson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, December 07, 2003 4:16 AM Subject: Re: card storage in the field Hi, Tanya Mayer Photography wrote: > > thanks for the advice mike! my business owes exactly ZERO dollars. Re: OT-Totally OT but...
Well, as most of the list Aussies would recognise, my favourite is cheese and vegemite "sangas" (that's australian for sandwiches)... I also love egg, mayo and lettuce, and vegemite cheese and lettuce... but that whole mayo/peanut butter thing, man, that's just weird - i thought peanut butter and jelly (we call it JAM) sangas were bad enough... ;-) tan - Original Message - From: "Keith Whaley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, December 07, 2003 5:48 AM Subject: Re: OT-Totally OT but... > Okay, are we into strange (= different) food now? > > My mother used to make sandwiches out of thick sliced homemade bread, > slathered with homemade butter and liberally sprinkled with sugar. > Sometimes brown sugar, with lumps in it. . . > Back then, altho' I didn't really know it, we were as poor as church > mice (height of the depression) and I got a lot of inventive meals. > Like you, I just thought all Ohio country boys ate that way. > I'd go to school and trade with classmates who (poor kids!) had > home-cured pork and mayo sandwiches. > Both of us felt we got a treat! > And we did! Re: Who else?
ok, so i think i am a bit "out" of your tea-tastes "loop"! although i don't drink alcohol, i also don't drink coffee or black tea... me, i'm a herbal tea lover - raspberry leaf, chamomile, lemongrass, peppermint, orange & jasmine (my fav!), you name it, i'll drink it... from the oh, so serene, nature loving, herbal tea drinking tan. (who is choking on her bloody tea as she writes this! lol) - Original Message - From: "mike wilson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, December 07, 2003 7:34 AM Subject: Re: Who else? > Ann Sanfedele wrote: > > >From Fortnam and Mason I hope :) > > (did I spell that right? ) > > Fortnum; but an understandable error.
