Someone urgently wrote me asking if this was a repro machine - turns out she
was the high bidder on it. She had read my article on eBay about repro
phonographs and took note of what iI said about the decal and was afraid it
might be a repro. Based on that article and my response to her email, she
canceled her transaction with the seller, and the seller will relist it.  I
feel proud of having saved someone from the pitfall of buying a Crapophone, but
I hope the seller will relist it as a repro. I did write to the seller and
advise them of the fact, in a very polite manner, making the assumption that
they did not know about it.

at an auction to use on a built in bookcase, but it didn't fit so now they're
selling it at a fraction of what they paid...Nowhere does it say that it is a
repro, but the standard I don't know anything about these machines disclaimer
appears. I find it doubtful because they call the machine a Victor Gramphone,
not a phonograph or Victrola asothers so commonly do. Of corse the decal says
The Gramophone Company, so that's a good possibility...Someone asked a
question about the date of the machin, and the seller says that someone full
of knowledge said that these machines had been made for at least 30 years, so
maybe that's the disclaimer that it is not a real antique, but if so it is a
shady one. And of course they may not know what it is like they claim, but who
buys something to put in a certain

other items I have seen on ebay that are of questionable origin. Or the seller

Re: [Phono-L] Stuck with a Crapophone

2012-03-20 Thread Jack Whelan

John,
I'm glad to see you created that eBay link describing crap-o-phones. Years
ago, I would routinely send a message to eBay bidders suggesting they refer to
one of several links that described crap-o-phones. I received many thank you
messages from bidders, helping them avoid the pain of buying such junk.
Ultimately, eBay banned me under my original eBay name for interfering with a
bidding transaction which was its policy at that time. Today, it's not easy
to get the bidder or buyer's email address so I'm surprised you were able to
help. Good work.

Sorry about the possible blank email. I take a different approach and
perhaps thought to be mean spirited by some. If someone wishes to spend
$900.00 on a crap o phone I don't involve myself. It is a learning device.
If educating yourself is less important than a $900.00 bid why would I
purpose the money means as much to them as it does to me? An hour or so on
the internet would sort it all out or waste $900 bucks.

Re: [Phono-L] Cygnet suggestion

2012-03-20 Thread Gregory Cline

Thanks Jerry!
I can wood grain cygnet horns in Oak or Mahogany. I have also grained
Amberola 1 horns and elbows, morning glory horns, Amberola 30 Grills, Paper
Mache' MG horns, Victor Brass bell horns cone in mahogany for a Victor VI.

The cost for graining a cygnet in either oak or mahogany is $175 plus
postage. This cost is for a bare metal horn and includes the decals. If I
have to strip paint or repair the horn there is additional cost based on
what is needed. I often pick horns up at shows (Union or Wayne) and return
them to the next show to save postage.
You can contact me off list at this email or at zonoph...@woh.rr.com. Or
visit my decal website, http://phonodecal.com and there is a contact link
there as well.

Thanks!

Gregg Cline

Subject: [Phono-L] Cygnet suggestion

If you're going to buy a reproduction Cygnet and have it painted, why not
have Gregg Cline paint it in an oak woodgrain?  In my opinion, it would be
must more interesting than a freshly paint black horn.  I'd suggest ordering
the horn and have it sent to Gregg.  He does a wonderful job and applies his
excellent decals to the finished horn.  Jerry Blais
