[Phono-L] Question about a Columbia Graphophone model I have never seen or heard of....

Hello all,

Can any one give me some insight into the Columbia Disc Graphophone BWT?  I
have not been able to find any info on this model and if it is a correct model
to even beging with.  I know that Columbia parted some machines together but
this I have never heard of before.

Try searching for that. have you asked George Vollema?

 Hello all,

I am looking now for a headless screw for a Columba BK. It is the size 5-40
and holds the rod that he caraige slides across above the feed screw and
gear. It's for the rod that is in front of the mandrel. There is only one
screw and it goes on the left side of the rod. This is the BK with the
black bedplate. I am hoping I can find some one with an original one that I
do not have to alter. I called Dwyane Wyatt and he only has one that I
would have to screw in and then cut off. That is not the way I want to go
about it if I can help it. If any one has one I would be very happy to
 purchase it.
I would also like to thank EVERYONE for all the help I have been given
here. I live in a very rural mile square town with it being over 100 miles

will be able to make it to the next Orlando, Florida show and get to see

Hi Ken,Please explain what you meant by the right hand side of the
attachment was missing... If it is just the bearing on the right side, you
already have one in your machine. He couldn't be referring to the feedscrew,
since that is permanently attached to the 2/4 gearing. The only other thing
would be the feedscrew tube, which you also already have. So, if he has the
feedscrew with the round gear case assembly attached and he has the BE plate
that has the locking post on it, you should be good. You might also need the
screws to attach the plate and the tube. Send a pic if you have one. Also,

The Columbia BWT is a disc machine that uses a Talkophone Brooke case. After
the lawsuits between Columbia and Talkophone, Columbia bought out Talkophone as
a settlement. As a result, you'll see Talkophone cases with Columbia mechanical
parts. The BWT is one of them. Hope this helps.

The screw in question is an ordinary set screw with a slotted head. You can get
this screw at any well stocked hardware store. I had the same problem with my
Edison Standard Model B. It was missing the set screw that held the 2/4 min.
attachment to it. A 5-40 thread is very common
in a well stocked store.

2012-07-26 Thread Vinyl Visions

The main problem with finding set screws, is not the 5-40 thread, it is the
slot, as opposed to a socket head. I have a local fastener company that stocks
a bazillion screws of all types and shapes and has plenty of stock, but slotted
are real hard to find, unless they are new old stock. Collectors of antique
machinery of all types have bought up all of the available stock of slotted
screws. I recently searched for any size slotted set screws for my restoration
of a Fairy Phono Lamp - no luck - not that they might be out there somewhere,
just not commonly available any more.

Basically, if it's cheap and in good, complete working condition (reproducer,
crank, horn and all obvious parts), go for it... If it's more than $4-500, then
check it out, as far as value. If it's missing parts, then it might be hard or
impossible to find replacements.

The Columbia BWT is a disc machine that uses a Talkophone Brooke case. After
the lawsuits between Columbia and Talkophone, Columbia bought out Talkophone
as a settlement. As a result, you'll see Talkophone cases with Columbia
mechanical parts. The BWT is one of them. Hope this helps.

 Hello all,

Can any one give me some insight into the Columbia Disc Graphophone BWT? I
have not been able to find any info on this model and if it is a correct
model to even beging with. I know that Columbia parted some machines

You buy a 5-40 filster head machine screw, chuck it into your electric

I would also like to thank EVERYONE for all the help I have been given
here. I live in a very rural mile square town with it being over 100 miles
to the nearest city. It is so nice to be able to be in contact with other
collectors even though I do not get to meet anyone face to face. Maybe I
will be able to make it to the next Orlando, Florida show and get to see
some old friends and make some new ones.

Also,

I took two 5-40 nuts locked them together on the screw. Then with a Dremel with
a thin cut off blade and holding the nuts with vice grips. I cut the nut and
screw at the same time. You loose a nut but it is easier to put in a slot in
the small screw.

You buy a 5-40 filster head machine screw, chuck it into your electric
drill and file down the head.

The main problem with finding set screws, is not the 5-40 thread, it is the

but slotted are real hard to find, unless they are new old stock. Collectors
of antique machinery of all types have bought up all of the available stock

there somewhere, just not commonly available any more.

I think you are looking for a set screw, or grub screw, probably slotted.

I would also like to thank EVERYONE for all the help I have been given
here.  I live in a very rural mile square town with it being over 100 miles
to the nearest city.  It is so nice to be able to be in contact with other
collectors even though I do not get to meet anyone face to face. Maybe I
will be able to make it to the next Orlando, Florida show and get to see
some old friends and make some new ones.
 Kenneth

Hi Ken,Please explain what you meant by the right hand side of the
attachment was missing... If it is just the bearing on the right side, you
already have one in your machine. He couldn't be referring to the feedscrew,
since that is permanently attached to the 2/4 gearing. The only other thing
would be the feedscrew tube, which you also already have. So, if he has the
feedscrew with the round gear case assembly attached and he has the BE plate
that has the locking post on it, you should be good. You might also need the
screws to attach the plate and the tube. Send a pic if you have one. Also,
let me know what he is asking, if you don't mind. My email is:

The Columbia BWT is a disc machine that uses a Talkophone Brooke case. After
he lawsuits between Columbia and Talkophone, Columbia bought out Talkophone as
settlement. As a result, you'll see Talkophone cases with Columbia mechanical
arts. The BWT is one of them. Hope this helps.

Hi Ken,
When the economy was good, they were worth about $1000.00 - $1200.00. With the
bad economy, It shouldn't sell for more than $700.00. If you can get it for
less than $700.00, then go for it. It would be worth more depending on the
condition. Good luck with it.

Harvey,
I have never seen a machine like this from Columbia and I am interested in
getting it but I sure do not want to over pay for it and I have no idea what
the valuse on something like this would be.  If you could provide some insight
in the value of something like that.  Any insight in the value you could help
me with would be just great.
I will wait on your reply.
Take care until I hear from you about the BWT Disc Graphophone.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: [Phono-L] Question about a Columbia Graphophone model I have never seen or heard of....

2012-07-26 Thread Vinyl Visions

Ken, personally I wouldn't buy it. Not because its not a nice machine, but if
I'm going to spend $1,300 on one I am going to get something that I like
better. I am not a big fan of the oddball Columbia disc machines, mainly
because parts are not easy to find if something needs repair.
Columbia springs are difficult to replace and I'm not crazy about the styling.
I like the Columbia cylinder machines without the pot metal. However, everyone
has their favorites. I, personally like front mount Victors or small rear mount
Victors... or for that matter Pathe machines. As you can see, this boils down
to personal preferences...
