Yes, Martin is still in the needle business. But he is apparently VERY busy, as
well. Not the easiest man to get a hold of. He has moved since his old Amerola
Graphic days. But m...@together.net is his current e-mail. Cheers, TF

I spoke to Mr. Bryan (New Amberola Phonograph Company) on the telephone
three or four years ago about placing a large (close to $ 1000.00) order
for needles, both in bulk in packages of 100, sent him cheques for same
but the cheques were never cashed, nor were he needles received he never
responded to several letters I wrote inquiring about my order. Finally
this year, I quit keeping funds to cover the cheques in my bank account
thought he had disappeared from the face of the earth so
my cheques would not be cashed. Is he still in the needle business? I
had previously bought needles from him several times would like to again
since he offered several
thicknesses suitable for different records.

Yes, how strange, 3 or 4 years ago he sent a bulk mailing around saying that he
was starting up the Amberola Graphic again, asked me to send in my subscription
fee and promised he would start getting them out on a more timely basis, then
as you say, the elusive fellow disappeared from site, never cashed the check,
and never followed up on his promise to start up the Amberola Graphic again.
Now you say he is still in the Needle business. I realized that the guy is a
one man show, but you have to fulfill your promises, and if you don't, why in
the world would you buy needles from him? I don't hold a grudge against the guy
mind you, he was a trailblazer in our hobby as far as offering a very
informative and interesting collectors quarterly that you looked forward to
receiving, its just that something obviously went very very wrong towards the
end, and has never been the same since. There was no follow up, no apologies,
for failures to keep your word, it just did not sit very w
ell with many many collectors, even until this day.

I don't know about Texas, but in California checks are only good for 6 months.
If not cashed by then they are void at the bank. This Bryan guy sounds like

Re: [Phono-L] Steel needle manufacturer??

2010-04-16 Thread Steven Medved

I called him on the phone after the mailing to ask him where he got his needles
and how he was doing.

He said all his investments went bad so he could no longer do the Graphic or
the needles, and his best friend died and some other bad things had happened to
him. His vintage car he had had since he was young that was his daily driver
got totaled. He said it had taken him a year to get over all these things and
he was now going to catch up on the needle orders and continue with the
Graphic. I waited a year and my check for the needles was not cashed so I
figured he had changed his mind.

After that nothing else was heard from him until he started to sell needles on
eBay.

Re: [Phono-L] Steel needle manufacturer??

2010-04-15 Thread Bryan, Ronald (DSHS/DDD)
I observe a difference in shape between antique/original phono needles,
and newly manufactured ones. The antique needles I've found are
slightly longer, and are tapered along the full length of the needle - a
true needle shape. The newly manufactured ones are somewhat shorter,
and are not tapered apart from the cone tip - they are more of a brad
shape. I sure do like the look of the old long tapered needle when I
use one from time to time. Anyone know if any of these manufacturers
that have been mentioned still make the old-school style needles that
are tapered along the full length?

To my un-aided ear, I can't tell a difference in the sound of an old
needle versus a new needle, but I am sure on some micro-level there is a
difference. Just as the varying size of a soft tone versus a full tone
needle makes a difference, the varying shapes of antique versus new
needles, and also difference in the old-versus-new steel alloys, must
affect the
vibrational sensitivity of the needle, and thereby ultimately have an
effect on the sound. So even if the difference in sound is not
perceptible to me, I still find it more satisfying to use an antique
needle. Lol - maybe I'm the only one for whom these pedantic details
matter!

To my un-aided ear, I can't tell a difference in the sound of an old

needle makes a difference, the varying shapes of antique versus new

affect the
vibrational sensitivity of the needle, and thereby ultimately have an
effect on the sound. So even if the difference in sound is not
perceptible to me, I still find it more satisfying to use an antique
needle. Lol - maybe I'm the only one for whom these pedantic details

The quote from Bagshaw for 20,000 was 1700.00, or 8.00 plus cost per
hundred. Not competitive at all. I see you would have to buy tons to compete
with these $5 per hundred sellers.

Yes, it's Bagshaw. They've been making them since the early 1900s. But
here's the catch --- you've got to buy A LOT, I mean A LOT -- and they won't
be in little bags. So, it's a big expense and a lot of work. For most people
it's too big a project, but go to

I bought needles from APSCO in the past but I didn't like them. Under a
magnifier the surfaces were very rough and I didn't like the sound. They
 may
have changed suppliers since, however. It was convenient that they were
prepackaged though. I'd give them another try.

There were lots of suppliers 75-100 years ago and they made a variety of
lengths, and thicknesses (determining volume) as well as material/coatings.
We don't have as many choices now.
