Philip: But I don't HAVE two weeks! Maybe if I inject the mold with a hormone... or a or a steroid, or something? Nah. I'm going to try that circle cutter. I called Michael's and they have it in stock. Can't make it up there for a couple of days though. Guess we'll all have to wait in suspense. Love, MM Marcy Merrill Photographer www.merrillphoto.com How about this: * Pour agar agar in the base of the can/camera, allow to cool/solidify. * Innoculate with a mold or bacteria that dislikes light. * expose for 2 weeks (or so). You might need to use a mirror pinhole arrangement to avoid gravity sag in the agar medium. I'm not sure how you'd fix the image... (^: (?) -- pw
Re: [pinhole-discussion] going in circles
I'm getting some great answers from everyone and I appreciate it! Something I found on the net is a Fiskar's circle cutter. They claim it uses rubber gripper feet, so no pinholes in your circle. Costs about $14. I think I'll try it. You can get hole punches of any size imaginable. Marvy Uchida makes them--they are called craft punches. here's their website. The martial mood of the country led by some strange path to the following thought: Take a light tight cardboard box made of fairly thin cardboard: in the dark, securely tape film to two inner facing sides, and seal box. Take box outside, set it somewhere with a weight on top of it (a brick or rock). Stand away from the box, and fire a bb gun through the middle of one of the sides. If the board is thin enough, the bb should go through the box, through the first film, through the second film, and out again, causing 2 pinholes to be formed and simultaneously taking a picture in both directions at the same time! After a suitable exposure time, drop a slightly larger box on top of the first box to end the exposure. Has anyone done anything like this? Anyone want to try it and let me know how it works out? I haven't had a bb gun for, oh, 20 years, so I don't have the technology available... pw __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! [pinhole-discussion] Pintoids revisited
Hi all: A while back there was a thread about pinhole cameras made from Altoid containers. I meant to comment. Later, there was a thread about multiple-holed pinhole cameras. I meant to comment. I just finished an exhibit of some of my pinhole images. I meant to post about it. Anyway, I've spent my afternoon posting Pintoid images to my Pintoid page ( www.merrillphoto.com/pintoids.htm ). I've been using acupuncture needles to make pinholes and they work well. I'm going to try porcupine quills next. Anyone tried it? Just curious. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks to everyone for such an informative list! -MM Marcy Merrill Photographer www.merrillphoto.com

Aside from the tins I'd collected myself, folks sent them to me from all over the US. An entomologist from Michigan sent about 35. They had collected dragonflies in them. Guy wrote: . How did you get them light tight? Did you wrap some tape around to seal the light away? I suppose that you loaded them in a light-tight bag. How many would you carry around with you on a typical day? Yup. I loaded them in a changing bag. I wrapped black electrical tape around them. I taped the film inside with skinny Gaffer's tape. At first I was using Gaffer's tape to seal the outside of the containers. That got expensive. I've found electrical tape on sale ... three rolls for a buck. I made over one hundred Pintoids. I knew that if I had to re-load to make a shot, I probably wouldn't do it. I'm lazy. I probably used about thirty-some per day, on an average day. The rear main seal on my Jeep's engine blew out during the trip. So I had to stop every 45 miles or so to add another quart of oil ... I photographed what was there (at each stop), photogenic or not. Until Bismarck, where I dealt with the problem. Bismarck is actually a really cool town! I never would have stopped there, if I hadn't been in need of the services of Corwinn some-body-or-other's Jeep dealership. The Missouri River runs through Bismarck. Still gotta print those shots. The Pintoid page mentions the next trip, which is to the Alamo. The trip was planned before these latest events involving terrorism in our country. Still, I think now that I'll go. I may have to borrow your idea as it's a good one. My next project is to try Gordon's idea of soldering nuts onto the Pintoids. I think I'll put them on the large side opposite the pinhole. At first, I tried to glue them onto an edge. They got in the way of the light proofing tape. John Yeo wrote: I played around with altoid boxes a while ago with paper negatives. The wide angle is fun. I had trouble figuring out how to keep them still. I usually ended up holding them hard against the ground. Your idea of magnets would have made it much easier. John; I've been having this problem also. I tried gluing a tripod nut to the Altoid tins, but it simply broke off the first time I attempted to use it. I've been using broccoli rubber bands. This is kind of a hassle. I've also got to figure out a better shutter than black tape, which tends to cause the Pintoid to move during the process of peeling. Someone suggested those flexible magnet strips. Tried them. They want to stick to everything but the camera and, if I attach them to the camera with tape, I end up with the same problem as if I'd simply used tape. Anyway, I'll figure out some sort of sliding shutter, or something. Meanwhile, I'm having a great time with the stereo Pintoid and will post images, maybe tomorrow. -MM http://www.merrillphoto.com/pintoids.htm Marcy Merrill Photographer www.merrillphoto.com
Re: [pinhole-discussion] Pintoids
Hey Jeff: Thanks for the comments. The photos were taken on the Washington coast. Funny story: That day, on the path down to the beach, we met two women who were leaving in disgust. They said that they'd just witnessed a nude photo session on the beach. (Hey! I thought I was the only one with that idea!) Anyway, they shook their heads as they described the photographer ... he said it was for FINE ART...but you should have seen the equipment he used! (I immediately swallowed my question, What were they using? because it would have seemed weird under the circumstances.) Definitely pornography. they said. Later, we both wondered what the women would have thought of all of my Altoid containers? It's yucky out today. A perfect day for Pintoid renovation work. By the way, I couldn't get your images to load from the hiddenworld.net address you posted. Any ideas? I did visit your pinhole photos area at the site. Very nice. I especially like the dried reservoir (?) with the Jesus sign in the background. -MM Marcy Merrill Photographer www.merrillphoto.com Jeff Dilcher wrote: Great pictures, Marcy! My friend is about 8 months pregnant. The weather was perfect, with this weird-ish high overcast and hot mist rolling in from the bay. A nice breeze to make the white dress flow a little. Lots of elements involved. Sun, water, pregnant woman, child, earth. In fact it was VERY element-al. Just like a ... like a ... like a SoBe bottle! I plan to add two more pinholes to it, so I can choose between using the single, centered pinhole or two offset pinholes, making a somewhat stereo (though overlapped) image. Hello to everyone! I joined this list a few weeks ago and have been enjoying it immensely. I especially like the recently posted Merlin Photo by Jim Kosinski.
