Bug#407010: mplayer: multiple segmentation faults

2010-04-06 Thread Reinhard Tartler

fyi, i've just tested upstream mplayer svn 20100405. it does not crash
with lol-mplayer.mpg. on the other hand, the currently packaged
version, svn 20090405, still crashes. does it make sense to upgrade to
 a newer upstream version? thanks.

The newer mplayer won't work with our system ffmpeg, so we would need to
compile in ffmpeg statically? Would this be acceptable for the security
team? I suppose not.

Moreover, ftp-master blocks any work on mplayer. If you could talk to
someone to get mplayer out of (binary) NEW, that would allow me to work
again on the package.

It's the other way round. In Debian we follow the stable ffmpeg
release series (i.e. 0.5x) while mplayer follows the current ffmpeg
development trunk.

i had no idea. what do they disapprove about the package? i suppose i
could send a message indicating that some action really needs to be
taken since this issue does have security relevance.

We never got explicit public feedback from the ftp team, thus I can
only *guess* it has to do with our enabling of the mencoder package.
Mencoder is considered dangerous, because it is... well... able to
encode into different probably patented video formats using libavcodec
from ffmpeg. However, the Debian mencoder package is linked against
the Debian ffmpeg libraries, which have exactly these codecs disabled.
So mencoder is just as dangerous as xine, vlc or ffmpeg itself which
are already in Debian. Maybe you could try to hint this to the ftp
team, it seems they don't listen if we tell them ourselves...

This doesn't make sense to me. the parallel build support in CDBS
invokes make with a -jN argument. It doesn't mess with the calling of
debian/rules itself.

Right. The problem I thought up was avoided long ago by setting
NOTPARALLEL - see bug#240981.

I will revert that commit.

Totally. The only strong points we have as team are listed here

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/DevelopPackaging#Packagingguidelines

and they are pretty packaging-tool-agnostic (re CDBS/DH7/whatever). We
have a lot of packages to care of and limited resources (it's almost all
volunteer work), so I think it makes sense to let whoever gets the job
done decide about how to do it, as long as it is compliant with the

Btw, thanks a lot Jonas and Adrian for pushing jack2-unstable forward.

Thanks for the confirmation and encouragement, Free. I certainly
appreciate there being room for my CDBS packaging style here at the
Multimedia team.

I appreciate Reinhard being concerned about newcomers, too. I have had
a bad experience with setting the bar too high: I initiated the Debian
packaging of Sugar packages and encouraged others to join me but
insisted on doing it my own way. Today - after several interested
attempts to help out - I am still the only maintainer of those packages,
and I partly blame the complexity of my packaging style for that.

So I seriously mean it when I wrote earlier that I appreciate you
challenging me, Reinhard. I could use some more challenges on the
usability front.

Please continue to raise questions about my packaging. Both to maybe
learn something (you *and* me). But also to challenge the relevance of
complexity. Most probably I will be _very_ stubborn, but even if it
seems you are getting nowhere with me it might be that your raising
concerns in the long run help me shape up both my own personal packaging
style and the features of CDBS. Just wishing here :-)

Regards,

 - Jonas

Oh, I find reading the cdbs source enlighting from time to time. In
fact, I do like some of its ideas. OTOH, I do have some disagreements,
my latest two have resulted in 2 bugs against the devscripts package,
which I consider as sucess from our dispute ;-) - And yes, I intend to
continue asking questions :-)

Bug#407010: mplayer security

2010-04-06 Thread Michael Gilbert
hi,

the latest upstream version (svn20100405) of mplayer fixes a
long-standing open security issue [0]. if this version were to be
packaged and uploaded, would it have a chance of getting through the
ftp-master new queue in a reasonable time frame? the current version
has already been delayed 10 months now [1]. is there a list of
specific problems in that version that need to be addressed? thanks!
