Re: printer opinions

2016-01-28 Thread Victor Odhner
I’m happy with our old HP OfficeJet 550. Its paper tray is big enough for a lot
of copies, its four ink tanks have a long lifetime, and it prints pretty fast.
It was sold to me as an alternative to a laser printer, and I think we’ve done
well with it.

We’ll see how it does with the cheaper ink from Cartridge World. :)

toner in a 2000 page yield printer to equal one of my $59 cartridges and my
printer is made much better, so it will last longer too but like I said, it
doesn't make much sense if you print so seldom that you only put 1 or 2

because your new computer doesn't have a parallel port on it any more)

Re: printer opinions

2016-01-27 Thread Brian Cluff

13,000ish for each color.

It sounds like you are looking to do photo work with your printer. If
you want something that looks like a photo then you don't want any laser
printer. Laser printers print too crisp. You need something that will
allow inks or dyes to run together a little bit.

So you'll want to get an inkjet or dye sublimation printer.

If I were you, I would look at what it costs to just get things printed
at walmart or some other place. I think you'll find that it's worth it,
especially when you consider that the yield numbers are based on a 5%
coverage. With photos your coverage is much much higher so every print
will be more like printing 20 pages worth of ink taken out of every
cartride, so you'll be eating through inkjet cartridges after 50ish
prints. Just get yourself a decent inkjet for when you need something
quickly.

The 1430 is a Pigment instead of Dye and as such they tend to be more

The artisan 1430 is designed for art reproduction and high quality
graphics.

At 300 it is the least expensive of the professional print options. And it
has the ability to do 11x19. Anything better jumps by 200 or more.

Re: printer opinions

2016-01-26 Thread Stephen Partington
Laser printers the real cost is the toner, but we worked out a canon that
was only about 100 and it was cheaper per page than all the ink jet
solutions we had found. Not sure this is still the case.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-LBP6030W-Wireless-Monochrome-Printer/dp/B00K5UZO0Q/
Sure, but you would save money across the board on refills so my argument
still stands. You HAVE to consider total cost of ownership with printers
or you can loose serious money.

At the place that I used to work they spent $90,000 on purchasing toner for
15 printers because the accountant made us buy the "cheap" printer. And to
make matters worse the printers completely died about about a year and a
half they were purchased. The classrooms that were using the better
printers that we wanted to buy ran those printers for a decade or more with
little to no problems.

That's of course an extreme example on printers that were being heavily
used, but it still matters on lower usage printers.

But that's for *new* cartridges, no? IIUC, after the initial purchase most
folks just refill the cartridges for much cheaper. If you can't afford any
downtime, just buy 2 cartridges, so you can have one at the refiller.

Best advice I got on this subject was: before you buy a laser printer, ask the folks @
the nearest refiller (or wherever you plan to have it done) how much it costs to refill
the cartridge and how reliable the refills are. Some cartridges refill easily, others are
apparently engineered to resist--some manufacturers apparently low-ball printer prices to

Re: printer opinions

2016-01-25 Thread Brian Cluff
Make sure to compare the cost per page. Most low and mid range laser
printers have relatively high costs per page when compared to other
printers.

For instance, when I was last in the market for a printer, Most of the
printers I was pricing had toner cartridges that cost about $50-$70
each. With low end printers you would those cartridges would usually
have a yield of about 1500-2000 pages per cartridge. Spend a little
more on the printer and you get a printer that will get 5000-8000 per
cartridge. Spend a little more and you can get printers that will get
15000 to 2 for the same $50-$70.

Of course it all depends on how much you print. If you only use or a
ream of paper a year, it might not be worth the extra cost to get a
higher end printer since you'll probably replace it well before it's
worn out and you won't be feeding enough toner into it to make up for
the added cost.

I personally try to get a mid range printer due to the nice middle
ground of having slightly higher yields as well as the printer having
extra bells and whistles that the low end printers usually lack.

Well for wide format/photos I would have to say the Epson Artisan 1430 is
about the best you will get. However, it will kill with ink you if you use
it up doing text docs.

For black and white, most any of the current 100$ range or fewer printers
is perfect. Doc printing is really simple and easy to do well so any cheap
thing is good. you can also get into cheap B/W Laster printers at that
range. wich is my goal. the longevity and value for laser text are huge.
