Without deviating too much, I also assume, Amit Karpe (from Pune?) had posted a Custom build of Ubuntu with all CS based developer tools within the LIVE CD. Amit, may be you can elaborate more on that option, apart from Knoppix and Fedora Spin. I'm assuming CS==Computer Science, in which I would be very interested to know about it. Re: [PLUG] Need LiveCD for Students to learn C
Digressing a bit - how about _not_ allowing an IDE at all ? IMHO, using a console based editor is an important and essential skill when operating *nix kind of OSes. Also, using IDEs right from the beginning will keep the student in dark about what goes into compiling and debugging a program. And I personally agree, and I'm doing my bit. But this student comes to me for consultation, and I do not control rest of his learning time (college lab/home) I've started with gEdit and gcc. Personally I would prefer to teach Vi/Vim, but then my focus would move from C to Vi. -DP -- On the internet, no one knows you are a penguin -- __ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List: (plug-mail@plug.org.in) List Information: http://plug.org.in/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/plug-mail Send 'help' to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for mailing instructions.

Re: [OT] Language, tone and approach in posts from {Re: [PLUG] DSL modem}
Finally **I** have a concern: 1. When the participants (you are possibly a veteran) of this forum start ignoring the basic etiquettes, what happens to the forum: http://www.plug.org.in/mailinglist.php Please read Point 18 under the sub-section Posting to the List in the section Mailing List Etiquette. Except when using abbreviations, you should not capitalize ... like you have with the words - lot, all and fact - none of which are abbreviations. You surely know, capitalization is the electronic way of shouting at people. As you've noticed, entire sentences aren't capitalized. If you try reading aloud my post and shouting when you encounter capitalized word, i think you'll find it is very difficult. Point I am making is that yes, I am aware that capitalizing is equivalent of shouting (if everything is in caps) I think when individual words are capitalized it has an effect of putting *stress* of certain words, which is certainly what I was going for. Thanks for reminding me of the rules. I link your style of using asterix around the word one needs to stress. I've already used in in this post :) -DP -- On the internet, no one knows you are a penguin Check my blog at http://desipenguin.blogspot.com/ -- __ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List: (plug-mail@plug.org.in) List Information: http://plug.org.in/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/plug-mail Send 'help' to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for mailing instructions.

Re: [PLUG] How to write a makefile or installable script
Basically i want to copy all files and folders in /usr/lib and /usr/share. If any one know please help me by sending some examples or by hyperlink. Which distro are you targetting for distributing your project ? Depending upon the asnwer to this, there amy be various instructions that you need to follow. e.g on RH/FC you need to create RPM, so search for instructions on how to create RPM on google. Similarly for Debian based distro, you need to create .deb package. If you don't care about package manager then easiest thing to do is to distribute your project as tar.gz file. This is simplest and can be achieved easily via makefile as well. -DP -- __ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List: (plug-mail@plug.org.in) List Information: http://plug.org.in/mailing-list/listinfo/plug-mail Send 'help' to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for mailing instructions.

Search for VI Cheat Sheet on google, you'll get a lots of hits. Look at them, take a print out of the one that you like. keep this printout near your computer where you use VI. Now to answer your question : 1. Copy single line : Have your cursor on the line you want to copy and in command mode press yy This will copy the line into the buffer 2. Copy multiple lines : Same as above except prepend the count before yy e.g to copy 3 lines, you'll use 3yy 3. Paste: Go to the line where you want it pasted, and in command mode, press p This will paste it BELOW the line where you have your cursor If you are using Vim, them you can try :he this will give you help. Re: [PLUG] Sharing My Updates With Other People On Ubuntu/Debian?
Say, I have installed KDE, VLC player etc on my base Ubuntu (Ubuntu is gnamoe based). I'm assuming that you've installed these packages using apt-get. If this assumption is correct, only then rest of my email makes sense. apt-get has an option for download only. (Check http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html) It also has an option of using local file system as source for .deb files. (Check http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-basico.en.html#s-sources.list) Combination of these two, should be able to give you the desired result. So how do I share my wares with him? Sharing in Windows is quite easy. You can just burn the install/setup files and give it to the person. Is there any similar way? Person having the fast net connection does apt-get -d (download only) Then burn the .deb files on to CD and use it to install on local machine as well as share the CD with other people without fast conneciton. Re: [PLUG] Need some help.
I have done a lot of installation for net based cyber cafe's before. As far as the cost is concerned you just need the pc's and the hub to be honest and also not to forget the cat5 cables that's it ! Have you considered setting up Linux Terminal server ? That could keep the costs of PCs down. You could avoid HDD altogether and go with diskless workstation. Read more at http://www.ltsp.org/documentation/index.php AFAIK, users in Cybercafe wouldn't save anything locally (May be floppy/USB Drives, but not to local HDD) You may be able to invest little more (better h/w) for server by saving costs on low end machines for workstations. As far as the distro is concerned you can pick anyone say FC4 which is good or mandrake or anything else. Also check http://pxes.sourceforge.net/ You could also let each machine boot with Knoppix or its variant. You can remaster it to your taste (Your cybercafe logo, your choice of programs etc) You just have to install the distro on each of the machines and just put the ip's and stuff nothin else is required to be done... What applications do you need to install ? OpenOffice (or MSWord Viewer) might be needed if users want to open MS Word document sent to them on their email. Same for xls/ppt files as attachments. How are you planning to upgrade the machines over the period of time ? LSTP or thinclient solution might be useful here. I would like to visit your cafe once it is inaugurated. Re: [PLUG] Re: plug-mail Digest, Vol 22, Issue 16
Although I am not the moderator, I was present when the rules for moderation were setup. Only the mails which have: 1. Improper format (not plain txt) 2. Words like Win$ or MS$ are caught by filters. The rest of the mails are not even blocked for moderation. I was under impression that it is manually moderated. Mailing list that I used to administer locally, was moderated this way. I used to get notification for every incoming mail, and if I (as admin) allow it, it use to go to everyone who subscribed. Off course traffic was relatively low. (compared to PLUG) I guess with traffic like PLUG, manual administration is a huge overhead, if there is only single admin. May be multiple admins could share the load, if at all it is manually administered for moderation of mails. Lastly, it is not the job of the admin to reformat mails, so ... please understand. Got it. I didn't expect the admins to do that anyway. Re: [PLUG][OT] BSNL revised plans
No I meant all my data transfers up or down (ISOs, streaming, whatever), when I said downloads... won't there be a problem like My solution obviously is meant for downloads only, not streaming data. On hidesight, it might work with windows only (Not sure how sophisticated download managers on linux are) you need to log out and log back in (or turn off and on your modem) between 2am and 8am else BSNL wont consider it as you NU usage? I'm not sure I understand this. scheduler thing... but got to be careful that BSNL doesnt consider just the modem being powered-on to mean that you're connected then I would have to be awake to power it on/off 8-) Not sure I completely understand this, but from what I understand, you are billed *only* for 'extra' downloads. If your modem is *only* powered on, but no packets are being exchanged (coz you are sleeping, computer is waiting to start scheduled download) how will that be a problem , even if BSNL considers you as 'connected' ? Does the modem/computer keep sending packets just to keep the connection alive ? Even if it does, how much would that amount to ? (considering that you are going to get a *lot* of data 'free-of-charge' between 2-8AM ? -DP -- On the internet, no one knows you are a penguin (http://www.unc.edu/depts/jomc/academics/dri/idog.html) -- __ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List: (plug-mail@plug.org.in) List Information: http://plug.org.in/mailing-list/listinfo/plug-mail Send 'help' to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for mailing instructions.

One has to *remember* to scroll down and start the reply. I know people who decided it is *not* worth their time on mailing list which will *not* moderate name calling (as original poster had mentioned), but will reject mails based on (incorrect) formatting. BTW, I didn't mean the rule is ridiculous, but the fact that message gets rejected, is ridiculous. Are you moderator , who made this rule ? Are you taking this personally ? Coz if you are, please don't. My suggestion was only in the best interest of the entire PLUG community. Instead of asking point blank why is it ridiculous it would have helped to give your points why it is NOT ridiculous I think this is what original poster was implying, lack of maturity/holier-than-thou approach of the (few, but very vocal) pluggies.
