Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Smart Mix plugin

2012-12-31 Thread Michael Herger

On the installation, it did take me a bit to figure out that you have to
do basic Smart Mix settings from the LMS Settings Plugins Page (the
Settings link on the far right of the Smart Mix plugin line). For
instance, if you want to have it mix on your library you have to tell it
NOT to use online services. Otherwise it tries to make a Spotify mix and
I don't even have Spotify installed.

That's a new one (to me). You say you don't have any Spotify plugin
configured, yet SmartMix is using it? Do you have Triode's plugin
installed (though not configured)? Did you ever use it?

I have an issue where I can't save the recipe created as a playlist, or
I can save it but when I click on the recipe (eg "Play it Loud!") it
just fails to run. I've set the plugin to debug but I have almost no
trace whatsoever. I also tried with recipes or my own, none will work
this way.

When mixes fail you should get some log entries anyway. Could you please
post them - after you've updated to 0.94 and given it another try, of
course ;-).

Also check the server.log right after the LMS restart: if the plugin fails
to initialize properly you should get some feedback as well.

In interactive mode ("The Blender") all works fine.

Heck... everybody seems to be using this much more than I ever thought...
:-).

Unfortunately not (yet). That's something I've had in the back of my head
from the beginning... but no solution yet. I would be very interested in
testing some of your mixes, and would love to include a few more presets.

Anyone got good suggestions of mixes that seem to work well?

Easiest would be to copy the "recipe" field from the blender and paste it
in a posting. We others could then manually create a new mix in the
blender, using your values to set the options. I tried to name the input
fields very similar to the actual variable names in the recipe (which are
defined by TEN) to allow for easy "translation". Including the character
triplets in "hotttnesss" :-).

The only thing to ignore would be the buckets list and the "limit"
parameter (which is set automatically based on the sources you have).

It's my understanding you can choose to play music from your own local
collection OR from internet services, NOT both. There is a check box in
the settings for the Smart Mix plugin which will toggle between one and
the other.

I'm happy to say that this behaviour should be fixed in 0.94: mixes now
default to a mixture of local and new tracks (if you are subscribed to any
of the supported music services).

I still left the "use local tracks only" option in, for those who really
want to re-discover their own music collection.

This shouldn't happen. Are you using all local tracks only, or some online

I love it. Thanks so much. And so glad to see that new things are
still happening with plugins and the server software.

I have been using MusicIP for at least 5 years, but using "The Blender"

refined and tunable mix (I am only using it on my own library). I can
also create a mix with the Smart Mix, save it, and then add a MusicIP

I ran the plugin briefly on 7.6.2 and it runs fine, much lighter than
MusicIP of course.

I don't think the wma files are an issue as they always play fine. As I
mentioned when the issue pops up, I can play the music files fine, but
the playlist screen only displays the last list played before the issue
started and the controls at the top (play, pause) don't work (rebooting
iPeng fixes the issue).

My "server" is a PC laptop running Windows Vista SP2 and LMS.

I don't know anything about "bitrate limiting" in iPeng. I haven't
changed any settings in iPeng since downloading it, so I'm assuming it's
using whatever is the default settings.

I appreciate your effort to figure out this mystery. :)

For what it's worth, over Christmas I tried using Muso on a 10 inch
tablet using remote desktop software. It was quickly obvious that even a
10 inch screen is far too small to use Muso in this fashion -- there was
a lot of zooming in and out. But I don't think it would be too difficult
to re-design Muso for the tablet screen and still retain everything that
makes Muso unique.

So if the conditions still are the same it looks like it will be
possible, but you would have to let each user register their own API
key, which complicates the setup process a bit but it will work.
They offer streaming for commercial applications without this
requirement, but then you have to agree with them on the specific terms

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBC radio 4 program unavailable to BBC iPlayer

The BBC iPlayer plugin uses an authorised BBC feed which provides all
details of program that can be played. Every so often this BBC feed
"loses" a program. The plugin cannot do anyhting as it is a BBC problem.
This looks to be the case with your missing program. Often the missing
program turns up in a few days.

A workaround would be to install the BBc iPlayer Extras plugin which
uses the BBC Iplayer plugin for playback but gets program info from
different BBC feeds. The "Forum" program is availble to play using the
Extras plugin albeit a bit hidden away.

Quite the opposite actually, hard-linking it to a web site often means
that the company have to provide official support for their product a
long time after they have stopped selling them. If they shutdown the web
site so the products stop working, a lot of people are going to complain
and they are going to get a lot of negative publicity, which is often is
very bad for any future business they plan to do. You can loose your

Correct, but it's a lot harder to abandon a paying customer, because
people might start to ask for refunds and give you negative critique all
over the place and that's generally not something most developers like.
Unless you have done it yourself, it's very hard to understand what it
really means to spend 5-10 hours every week year after year to support
users and maintain plugins for free without any compensation what so
ever. Unless you have experienced it, it's also hard to understand the
positive feelings you get when someone actually is prepared to pay for
something you have done.

LastFM have a Radio API which looks promising if you like to stream
radio from LastFM: http://www.last.fm/api/radio
But their non commercial Terms of Service also says: "This Agreement
does not entitle you to stream music or other content available on the
Last.fm Site." so I'm not really sure if you are allowed to use it or
not. Based on the questions they have asked me in previous communication

good idea to ask them specifically about it.

If anyone is interested I think they should give it a try, all plugins
developed will be valuable, either on short or long terms.
For someone who doesn't know perl, the easiest way to start is usually
to take an existing plugin which does something similar and start
adapting it to your needs.
If you don't know software development or engineering, it's generally
going to be hard, but it's definitely not impossible if you are
committed.

I'm happy to answer any development related questions in the Developers
section of the forum from someone who want to try develop a plugin and
I'm sure there are other plugin developers who are prepared to do the
same. If someone who isn't a software developer wants to try, it's
probably a good idea to start reading up on perl and look at some simple
plugin first, for someone who is software developer but doesn't know
perl it's easier, after all that was the case for me when I developed my
first plugin and it took a few weeks I think.

Unfortunately, due to some other music related projects I'm involved in,
I don't have the spare time to engage in any additional plugin
development myself at the moment, except for continuing to maintain and
support my own 20+ plugins/applets of course.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Smart Mix plugin

2012-12-31 Thread Oliplay65

Hi Michael,
If I create a dynamic playlist from a reciepe some songs are repeating
after a short while up to several times. If I create a static playlist
(same reciepe) everything works fine. Is there a possibility to avoid
repeating songs?

I don't know when it started, but it was after i did a new "Synchronize
with squeezebox server"

In the latest version he did nothing when i did a "Find Missing
Artwork"

I have now installed version 1433, and did again a "Find Missing
Artwork"
Now he is scanning, it takes a long time.
After he is ready i can see if the missing artwork is added.

Where can i find the muso.log?

At what point did this start? Do you mean it's for ALL albums?
Try sending me a muso.log - it may reveal something.

Thanks!

I can still use them through other means until then.

It happens with some other SQL playlists with user parameters too.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Optimistic about Squeezebox future

2012-12-31 Thread slimhase

Hi there;
I followed the various threads discussing the future of our Squeezeboxes
and I would like to propose a different approach then the often stated
"don't worry: mySB.com will still live a couple of years and after that,
you will anyhow want to buy / use something newer / better"

Background:
1st of all: I hate where things are heading generally these last years
in terms of consumerism:
You buy something and it gets obsolete ever more quickly - the cycle
gets quicker and quicker (cellphones, ...).
It wasn't always that way (i.e. I still have & use my Thorens turntable,
my (homebrewn) pre/main amplifier combo, my Bose speakers aso), but
companies found that if they (artificially) shorten a products lifetime,
they can sell more stuff by creating faster product cycles, which they
force the consumer to follow, as the old product simply won't work
anymore
And hard-linking a produkt to a web-site gives a company a perfect
end-of-life switch for their product.

Well, I don't like this at all and I think, many people in this
community don't either - that's why plugins like i.e. Triode's Spotify
Plugin are so popular (-> cutting the need of mySB.com for Spotify
use).

In my case, I fear the end of www.mySB.com (whenever that will be)
especially, because it will end me beeing able to use lastFM, which i
find reasonably priced and which I use almost on a daily base.

2nd: commercial vs non-commercial plugin.
I can see Erland's reasoning w/ the benefit of support for a commercial
plugin, but honestly I think that link is somehow wishful thinking: A
person can make a software / plugin commercial and still abandon
it)
The biggest disadvantage of a commercial plugin is that it can't use
public API's.

-> I think the way to go is to develop non-commercial plugins and (this
is the 'new' approach): Make it a public development, so that interested
people understand the plugin, can contribute - and can fix it
themselves, if the API changes ect.!

I am not a s/w developer, but I am interested, esp interested in
learning how to develop a plugin - and maintain its functionality.
I am sure many people in this forum are very similar.
(Afterall, the Squeezeboxes are a kind of tinkering device - that's
probably also the reason Logitech abandoned it and wants to go w/ a
simpler functionality via the UE devices.)

-> This is also the reason, why I think, we should start soon w/ such a
development - before the community shrinks and critical mass is lost.
(I would as stated favour to start w/ lastFM, since as stated I like it,
but also, since it is listed in Talvolas link:
http://www.programmableweb.com/apis/directory/1?apicat=Music

What do you think?

Other than that: Happy new year everyone!

Cheers, Heiner

I find it very strange that muso don't display the album art.
In al the maps there is a cover.jpg or in most cases a musoCover.jpg,
but muso don't display the art.

I shal try to go back to an older version.
The oldest version i have is musoSetup1433.msi

Looks like I fixed it so they work in the Logitech app and now they have
stopped working in SqueezeCommander.
Ideally SqueezeCommander should be fixed (or Logitech app), but as I
guess none of that is likely to happen I'll take a look and see if I
somehow can handle them differently. I don't think I'll be able to fix
it today, but I'll take a look at it during the next day or two and see
if I can find a solution for it.

I'm afraid there's no one solution for all Linux-based systems since
they often lock down the filesystem in ways which a windows box cannot
always breach. A samba share is the way to go for many Linux systems,
but if that cannot be installed then some Linux tweaking may be required
to open up the sqlite db files to windows (beyond my detailed knowledge
unfortunately). The best places to ask on how to do that is the Linux
forums or the forums for your specific device (eg. qnap). Another good
place to search is the moose support forum/group, since that is a
similar windows app which needs access to the db - qnap moose users may
have found a solution.

No, but it's only full albums that are processed in a standard artwork
scan (after you add albums) - you can scan for artwork for all albums
(non-full as well) via Tools > Find Missing Artwork > All

Erland,

Since the recent Dynamic Playlist update some of my SQL Playlists no
longer work in Squeeze Commander.

They are all in this style:

They still work through the web interface but in Squeeze Commander it
just hangs after picking the second year.

This is something which you have previously addressed and fixed. Has the
new version broken this again?

Could I manually re-install the older version of the plugin (using
Ubunutu) to verify that this is the cause?
