Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Plugin Suggestion: Vinyl Emulator
Interesting point about the general dsp plugin. I suspect that most things could be made as an inguz drc file. I have a feeling that there is an open reel emulator somewhere. Do you think it may be possible to take an existing product and transcode (if that's the right word) for SBS? -- adamdea adamdea's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37603 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87881 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Plugin Suggestion: Vinyl Emulator
What i was getting at is that both inguz and brutefir is somewhat complicated and probably scare away people who just want more or less bas or similar. And none of the current 3rd party solutions plays well with transcoding, seems to be a lot off messing with convert.conf to get things going . A more user friendly DSP framework that justs works would require the plugin app writer to think about how to juggle with transcoding in the background :) Finally someone has to be really interested in these things to make a plugin for it. It have to work with streaming and radio and with multiple players too. personally if I had coding skills I would do more re the music discovery experience or playlist handling for example an easy to install and use music-IP /Apple Genius like thing.. etc etc . A more modern webskin would also be fun (if you have the skills) -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Plugin Suggestion: Vinyl Emulator
I don't doubt that there are many other interesting apps which could be written. It just occurred to me that since many people like the sound of analogue, and I have no doubt it is technically feasible to produce some sort of analogue/vinyl filter, it might be interesting to see if someone would do it. -- adamdea adamdea's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37603 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87881 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
[SlimDevices: Plugins] Plugin Suggestion: Vinyl Emulator
I understand that outside the Squeezebox environment it has been demonstrated that by DSP a digital file can be made to sound like vinyl. As I understand it this was done by .VST file which can't be directly used by SBS. Lots of people still like the sound of records more than cds or digital files so I suspect it would be quite popular. From my lofty vantage point of ignorance I would have thought it would be fairly easy to implement for someone clever, and it may be that it's largely a matter of transcoding something which has been done before. This point has cropped up a number of times on the audiophile forum, but I suspect it would be of much wider interest. -- adamdea adamdea's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37603 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87881 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Isn't the reason people are interested in vinyl that they think it contains more audio information due to the analogue characteristics ? Adding vinyl artifacts to a digital file would be the opposite to this, it would remove audio information and make it sound worse than the digital original. Of course, I can't really classify myself as an audiophile so I might be missing something obvious. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). Or has been frequently asserted that digital plus appropriate distortion= analogue. Although analogue fans dont think this is what they like, it is ( the argument goes). Many ardent analogue fans including the high priest Michael fremer admit that cdrs of vinyl capture most of the vinyl magic. If you are interested I suggest having a look at hydrogenaudio. Anyway this was not intended to rehearse the arguments about that but simply to say that I believe there would be some interest. -- adamdea adamdea's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37603 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87881 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Plugin Suggestion: Vinyl Emulator
IMHO, the main advantage of vinyl is that the albums were mastered without all the crap they do today; especially loudness. More dynamic range sounds better on a good system. -- riffer riffer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13459 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87881 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Plugin Suggestion: Vinyl Emulator
Interesting link, but to make a really good vinyl emulator you have to do more, For example frequency dependent channel separation, it's about 20 dB in the midrange with some pickups. ( thats why it can have a deeper but narrower soundstage It has a warp emulator, but what about the constant wov and flutter component + the mech noise belt or direkt drive ? Low levels of acoustical feedback ? Lowest bass in mono ? phase anomalies ? Typical distorsion components from pickups , more second order thd ? Impulse behavior. A pickup chooser in the plug in ? Frequency response, im distorsion etc , moving coil step up transformer ? But imho even then it will be a novelty that people try once and then forget abaout. And the way modrn CD's and downloads are mastered, you probably end up with the worst of both worlds. What about an open reel tape machine emulator, if it emulates a good one it will be a subtle effect. But you rise a more general q about a dsp plugin engine for sbs, thats more interesting. the ones whe have are inguz and brutefir, but what about a more general purpose one ? that could take plugins for Eq or simple tonecontrols, loudness balance, and novelty stuff as the vinylemulator . -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub.
