Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Question regarding Spotty / Spotify stream quality options

2018-06-30 Thread mherger

Ok, here's the breakdown:

- Spotify is sending 320kbps data to the spotty helper. This data is
  afaik OGG encoded.
- The spotty helper would take these 320kbps OGG data and decode it to
  raw 1.4Mbps PCM data.
- The Spotty plugin would in turn take these 1.4Mbps PCM data and
transcode them to FLAC to save some bandwidth when streaming to the
device. FLAC is lossless compression. While it would save about 40-50%
of the volume, the data when decoded to PCM on the device again would
be the same PCM data that Spotty originally received from the spotty
helper. But the bandwidth would be about half the 1.4Mbps, which gives
  those 700kbps.

By disabling the PCM -> FLAC decoding you save a few CPU cycles at the
cost of more network traffic in your local network. In most cases this
really doesn't matter, as most systems have enough CPU and bandwidth.
But the data eventually played on the device would be the exact same as
the decoded OGG stream as received from Spotify. It's just been
transcoded a few times, resulting in different bitrates :-).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Question regarding Spotty / Spotify stream quality options

2018-06-29 Thread Michael Herger

Then i check my synology LMS page it says only 705kbps which playing the
same song. I tried reinstall and enabled or disable Spotty also cannot
get it to play at 1410kbps on the synology. On the picoreplayer LMS it
just play 1410 once I installed the spotify plugin.

Did anyone encounter this problem also?

I'm not sure I understand: are you saying that it wasn't playing? Or is
your "problem" the difference between 1410 and 705kbps? One is the raw
audio's bitrate, the other the flac compressed version's. The data
played would be the same. Just disable spotty -> flac transcoding if
that number is of importance to you :-).

Thanks, Michael, for all your work and your willingness to keep us all
informed.

You do say, "spotty is currently always using the highest quality
stream." If possible, could I (and perhaps the OP) request that this be
made an option? With limited DSL internet speed here, at times using
Spotty it rebuffers every minute or so, while TuneIn and other services
using lower-quality streams don't. This is the same whether using my
ethernet-connected picore server or wifi-connected laptop for LMS, so I
know it's neither the wifi nor the hardware used for LMS. I'd love to
have faster internet, but it's not an option where we live.

No, spotty is currently always using the highest quality stream.

Are there other means to choose the stream bandwidth?

For best quality leave at default, including bitrate limiting -disabled
-for the player.

The OP was not asking for best quality, but how to decrease the
bandwidth used. Spotty always streams in a PCM or FLAC format with
higher bitrate and bandwidth than any mp3 format has. Enabling a bitrate
limit for a player, makes LMS automatically transcode any stream in
higher bitrate, to the given mp3 bitrate format. You save bandwidth, but
quality also decreases.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Question regarding Spotty / Spotify stream quality options

2017-10-02 Thread Man in a van

As I understand it the "Sound Quality" as determined by Spotify is one
stream of 160 thingies per sec and another of 320 thingies per sec.

So changing the Sound Quality setting should result in the use of a
lower bandwidth.

What I did not remember (until the post by Stig) is that the Spotty
plugin is "fixed" at 320 thingies, regardless.

It is possible apparently, to utilise librespot at the lower bandwidth
but the developer deprecates the idea.

IMO encouraging users to be "Premium" means Spotify is more likely to
use the "Nelson touch" with regard to librespot.

Changing the "original" Spotify quality, wont change the format of
output from Spotty. Only the sound quality.
Instead you need to look at audio settings of your mobile player:

LMS settings -> Player -> Choose your "mobile picoreplayer" in 1st
dropdown -> Choose Audio in second dropdown

If you have LAME installed, you can now set "Bitrate limiting" for the
player to for example 320kbps. Everything above that should then be
transcoded to MP3 320kbps when streaming to your "mobile picoreplayer".
