Tidal might be better here, as you say: a recent blog of theirs has a curated review of Bowie's album history, with pointers to (some) albums. Mind you, I don't really want to pay a 50% premium for that. For other artists, e.g. Pink Floyd, there does seem to be only one version of each, at Deezer. Perhaps it is an out-of-copyright thing. So jazz from the 1950s suffers more than 70s stuff? cdmackay's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=24816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104908 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] quick catalog compare - tidal verses deezer
This is an interesting topic . One would expect Tidal who offers themself as a "hifi" service to curate their content IE keep well mastered versions and make it easy for us to differentiate . Getting the rigth version triumphs all thier other efforts . It does not matter if it's 320k MP3 CD quality flac or *sigh* hirez if it's a dud version . But as usual they market the bit container as the great solution . Kind of blue :) how many versions are we at now ? In general I can't find the time and effort to actually find all the *best* versions of everything . I would gladly join a hifi streaming service that did exactly that ,,curated thier content to get the best sounding versions . The record companies themself can obviously not be trusted , they want thier latest loudness war master online... Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] quick catalog compare - tidal verses deezer
Thanks, I've been wondering this, too. I got Deezer Elite a few days ago (via Ickstream), precisely because of the half-price offer. I know Tidal do a discount for buying 6 months in advance, but it's still considerably more than Deezer Elite. The one issue I find with these large catalogues, is trying to find the "real" version of a classic album, from all the crap versions. e.g. there are 2 or 3 "proper" versions of Getz/Gilberto, and then loads of dodgier versions, some of which have appalling sound. Would be nice if the more official versions were flagged in some way. But I suppose who defines "official". Ah well... cdmackay's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=24816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104908 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

When I first started with Tidal and found several versions of the same album , many remastered (ie in theory better), I took a second digital feed from my Transporter and plugged it through some waveform analysis software. Typically the remastered version was both hotter and also compressed... and this was on classic Jazz albums. So even these revered albums were not immune from the loudness wars. So it is a quandary... go for an older release or the "better" remastered one? On a side note, to some degree the CD quality streaming services can make hi-res (ie higher than redbook) seem somewhat irrelevant. In my case, I can get into Jazz artists that I wouldnt normally spend money on and I dont care if it is "just" redbook its just great I can listen to them at good quality.
