QuickTime

2012-11-29 Thread John Weller
A failed QuickTime update has left me with an empty QuickTime folder in
Program Files (x86) that I cannot remove. It claims I don't have
administrator rights despite being logged on as an administrator. I've
looked at the permissions and the folder is shown as not having an owner.
I've tried changing the owner and deleting the folder through the command
prompt with no joy. Any suggestions gratefully received! What am I likely
to lose if I don't have Quicktime?

John,
I had that happen about the time Windows 7 first came out. Easiest way is to
re-install and then remove via the controlpanel.

RE: [NF] SATA Drive a Dead PC...

2012-11-29 Thread Richard Kaye
Absolutely. Not to beat a dead drive here but what you need is a pro service
that will physically disassemble the drive in a clean room environment, remove
the platter(s) and place them in a functional controller/drive housing, read
the data and dump out to some other storage. If the platters are physically
damaged, some or all of the data won't be recoverable. Not cheap but if you
really need what's on there then you can justify the cost.

[NF] Recommendations for cloud photo storage

2012-11-29 Thread Joe Yoder
I have a client with about 25 gigs of photos stored on their LAN. They now
have a designer working in another state who needs access to the photos for use
in brochures and a web site. The designer works on a Mac while the clients
system is using Microsoft Server 2003 with XP workstations.

My initial thought was to use remote desktop access but I don't know if this
can be done from a Mac. Another possibility is Logmein. Perhaps someone has a
recommendation.

The ultimate solution appears to be storing the images in the cloud. Here is
my feature wish list:

Stepped costs that scale to space in use
Access control to manage access to the photos
Batch upload to allow copying an entire folder at a time
Provision for assigning tags either at upload or at a later editing step
Retrieval of a list of thumbnails based on one or more specified tags
Selections for actual download from the thumbnails
An integrated sizing capability on download that allows the user to specify the
appropriate resolution
An integrated cropping capability on download that allows the user to specify
the area of the original as well as the resolution
Logging of image use by user
I doubt that my client's needs are unique or that I am the first to envision
such a system but I don't have the time to research what is available right
now. Any help?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

However, with information from the link you sent for Google Map Parameters, I

I will have a go this evening

Simplest thing to do would be to load a url like
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=NN15+6PE in your browser control.
There a lot of tweaks you can add to the URL, the wayback machine has this copy:
http://web.archive.org/web/20110714031648/http://mapki.com/wiki/Google_Map_Parameters

Anything more sophisticated would require using the Google Maps API, but last
time I looked they wanted a fairly hefty license fee to use it on anything
other than a public-facing web page.

RE: [NF] Recommendations for cloud photo storage

2012-11-29 Thread Joe Yoder
I understand the possibility of dumping photos to the cloud and pulling
them back. What I am hoping for is a cloud site with full photo
management capabilities. I considered developing a system with that
capability to run on the client's LAN but realize that doing it in the
cloud makes more sense.

Subject: [NF] Recommendations for cloud photo storage

I have a client with about 25 gigs of photos stored on their LAN. They now
have a designer working in another state who needs access to the photos for
use in brochures and a web site. The designer works on a Mac while the
clients system is using Microsoft Server 2003 with XP workstations.

My initial thought was to use remote desktop access but I don't know if this
can be done from a Mac. Another possibility is Logmein. Perhaps someone
has a recommendation.

The ultimate solution appears to be storing the images in the cloud. Here
is my feature wish list:

Stepped costs that scale to space in use Access control to manage access to
the photos Batch upload to allow copying an entire folder at a time
Provision for assigning tags either at upload or at a later editing step
Retrieval of a list of thumbnails based on one or more specified tags
Selections for actual download from the thumbnails An integrated sizing
capability on download that allows the user to specify the appropriate
resolution An integrated cropping capability on download that allows the
user to specify the area of the original as well as the resolution Logging
of image use by user I doubt that my client's needs are unique or that I am
the first to envision such a system but I don't have the time to research
what is available right now. Any help?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

The first gig of storage is free; 25GB more is $2.49/month, and 100GB

Ed,

I've just been to their site and it appears they support sizing images
before they are uploaded. My interest is in always uploading full
resolution images to the web and then downloading a size appropriate to
the intended use. The same image may be used at different times for
different purposes.

Keep in mind that the steps so far will only keep the server running while the

enable the server even after subsequent reboots, then you will need to enable
the launch daemon for the server, which can be done with the following command:

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd Disabled

As with the previous command, this one can be reversed by repeating it but
changing the false text to true.

I miss the old AT command. I have no idea what MS was thinking when they made
the
atrocious Task Scheduler. The wizardization of everything is baffling. Makes

I love cron on *nix. It just works and the syntax in the plain text files is
simple
once you get to know it.

I'd search for 'cron on windows' and see what turns up.

Alternatively, if feasible for your problem, I recommend running tasks on the
server
instead of individual workstations. For instance, I worked around a Samba
networking
problem with Win7 clients by writing a 3-line Python script on the server and
setting
it to run every minute to send one ping to all Windows 7 clients on the network.

Does Win 7 support the AT or SCHTASKS command? I've used it for
setting up some rather oddball schedules that the stoopid GUI thingy
won't seem to let you do.

Thanks Paul!

I did google Cron windows and found a couple. After downloading,
installing, and then uninistalling three of them, I decided to start
looking for a native (probably VB) Windows utility. So far, after
downloading and installing two of those, still no luck.

The apps I need to run are Windows.EXE files that ARE stored on a Linux
SMB box, but I have to have a Windoze kernel to run them on. I've tried
a Win2k box that I use for exactly this reason for several other tasks,
but the programs author is claiming that their stuff is not Win2k
friendly. (Of course, he also balked at Win7...seems to be really
focused on WinXP)

Thanks Matt.

The problem I'm running into is that this program that needs to run
every 5 minutes will throw an error if it runs after 5pm. I connected to
the computer this morning and there was a butt-load of error pop ups
(every 5 minutes). The developer says well, yeah, don't run it after
5pm or you'll get a connection error.

So, running every 5 minutes on certain days is not a problem...but
limiting it to between the hours of X and Y seems to be unusual.

I was just hoping someone else on the list had some experience with such
a utility.

Thanks!

The above command is telling httpd.conf to look in the
/private/etc/apache2/other directory, and include all files with a
.conf extension during httpd start, just as if they were embedded in the
httpd.conf file itself. Perhaps this is where you should put your personal
 name.conf file.

You should be able to set the starting time and then give a number of hours
to run after that starting time.

The problem I'm running into is that this program that needs to run every
5 minutes will throw an error if it runs after 5pm. I connected to the
computer this morning and there was a butt-load of error pop ups (every 5
minutes). The developer says well, yeah, don't run it after 5pm or you'll
 get a connection error.

So, running every 5 minutes on certain days is not a problem...but
limiting it to between the hours of X and Y seems to be unusual.

I was just hoping someone else on the list had some experience with such a
 utility.

 Thanks!

Does Win 7 support the AT or SCHTASKS command? I've used it for
setting up some rather oddball schedules that the stoopid GUI thingy

It seems that if I've given the Win 7 Task Scheduler a bad rap, it's
because the GUI SUCKS and not the actual application.

Many thanks for this Stephen! Not only a great utility, but obviously a
very capable and earnest software developer who isn't trying to retire
from one sale (to me). Lots of other very interesting utilities, too.

Again, mucho thanks for the lead!

I've used Pycron with Windows XP with some success. It is a replacement for
the Cron command written in Python so I don't see why it wouldn't work in
Win 7. See http://www.kalab.com/freeware/pycron/pycron.htm
