QuickTime
A failed QuickTime update has left me with an empty QuickTime folder in Program Files (x86) that I cannot remove. It claims I don't have administrator rights despite being logged on as an administrator. I've looked at the permissions and the folder is shown as not having an owner. I've tried changing the owner and deleting the folder through the command prompt with no joy. Any suggestions gratefully received! What am I likely to lose if I don't have Quicktime? RE: [NF] SATA Drive a Dead PC...
Absolutely. Not to beat a dead drive here but what you need is a pro service that will physically disassemble the drive in a clean room environment, remove the platter(s) and place them in a functional controller/drive housing, read the data and dump out to some other storage. If the platters are physically damaged, some or all of the data won't be recoverable. Not cheap but if you really need what's on there then you can justify the cost. -- rk -Original Message- From: ProfoxTech [mailto:profoxtech-boun...@leafe.com] On Behalf Of Kurt @ VR-FX Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2012 8:11 PM To: profoxt...@leafe.com Subject: Re: [NF] SATA Drive a Dead PC... [NF] Recommendations for cloud photo storage
I have a client with about 25 gigs of photos stored on their LAN. They now have a designer working in another state who needs access to the photos for use in brochures and a web site. The designer works on a Mac while the clients system is using Microsoft Server 2003 with XP workstations. My initial thought was to use remote desktop access but I don't know if this can be done from a Mac. Another possibility is Logmein. Perhaps someone has a recommendation. The ultimate solution appears to be storing the images in the cloud. Here is my feature wish list: Stepped costs that scale to space in use Access control to manage access to the photos Batch upload to allow copying an entire folder at a time Provision for assigning tags either at upload or at a later editing step Retrieval of a list of thumbnails based on one or more specified tags Selections for actual download from the thumbnails An integrated sizing capability on download that allows the user to specify the appropriate resolution An integrated cropping capability on download that allows the user to specify the area of the original as well as the resolution Logging of image use by user I doubt that my client's needs are unique or that I am the first to envision such a system but I don't have the time to research what is available right now. Ed, I've just been to their site and it appears they support sizing images before they are uploaded. My interest is in always uploading full resolution images to the web and then downloading a size appropriate to the intended use. The same image may be used at different times for different purposes. Cripes. The configuration file fails, because ...it calls another configuration file, which fails because ... it passes by reference a file name. That file contains a reference to another file, which fails, because ... an apparent variable referenced in another file is wrong, missing or otherwise sysfu'ed. Cripes. Thanks Paul! I did google Cron windows and found a couple. After downloading, installing, and then uninistalling three of them, I decided to start looking for a native (probably VB) Windows utility. So far, after downloading and installing two of those, still no luck. The apps I need to run are Windows.EXE files that ARE stored on a Linux SMB box, but I have to have a Windoze kernel to run them on. I've tried a Win2k box that I use for exactly this reason for several other tasks, but the programs author is claiming that their stuff is not Win2k friendly. Thanks Matt. The problem I'm running into is that this program that needs to run every 5 minutes will throw an error if it runs after 5pm. I connected to the computer this morning and there was a butt-load of error pop ups (every 5 minutes). The developer says well, yeah, don't run it after 5pm or you'll get a connection error. So, running every 5 minutes on certain days is not a problem...but limiting it to between the hours of X and Y seems to be unusual. I was just hoping someone else on the list had some experience with such a utility. Thanks! Mike Original Message Subject: Re: Recommendations...
