Yeah - GMail has been tossing a BUNCH of the recent ProFox emails into my

the past year, but, it keeps trying to push ProFox into Spam! Maybe
its cause it Knows that the Fox is Dead! Yikes!

OK - that just meant to be humorous - don't Stone me...

Re: VFPAdvanced - My Problem, My Tests & Some Results

2024-03-07 Thread Kurt Wendt
Hey Paul,

Completely understood why my suggestion would not work in your case. And,
WOW - I'm Thrilled to hear that Alan's suggestion blew you away - and put
your data processing into Turbo Speed Mode!

And, yeah - I still may at some point create a VFP app for work.

Re: VFPAdvanced - My Problem, My Tests & Some Results

2024-03-05 Thread Kurt Wendt
Thank you Paul for your kind words.

One suggestion - why not suggest that the Import process is run at the End
of the Day - and have the User start it up and just walk away for the
night. Then - NO NEED to have any kind of Status updates on the screen - as
nobody is watching it!

Also, an alternate option - suggest client run this on a machine not in use
- and it can run unattended.

The idea behind both suggestions is simply then you need not truly worry
about screen updating and a status.

Anyway - its just a thought...

Yeah - my new job is truly my Dream job - its FUN - and I enjoy going to
work every day - and I get to run printers, and even get to do 3D Design
work!

When work is FUN -- Then LIFE is GOOD!!!

My Motto - Trademark Pending...

2024-03-04 Thread Kurt Wendt
Hey there Paul,

Interesting write-up, and it was a good read this morning.

Will admit - I have NOT Touched VFP in a while. AS I've had my head down in
the 3DP world for a while now. In fact, life kinda went to hell again for
me - as I lost my job last July - co. imploded - letting almost EVERYONE go
from the Essentium site in Irvine, CA - whilst only letting a couple folks
go from HQ in TX. And, it was miserable - a little over 6 months
unemployed. But, luckily I got a new gig - also in Irvine - and I am
actually doing 3D Design work for the job, as well as heavily working with
3D Printers. In fact, I had thrown the idea around about doing a small
database application for them. But, so far, I have not really dived into
that...

Yeah, I suspect that every time you import a record - it has to do a
Re-org of that IDX file - and the building of it would probably be Much
faster after importing all data.

I'm curious...

Doesn't VFP normally give some kinda of a screen updating when building an
IDX file? And, if so - maybe you could use THAT as a way to show the user
what is happening!

It's just a thought - and mostly a WAG.

Goodluck!

So - exactly how many emails did you send? On that webpage - there's a
mention of 0.57% work wanted emails sent. But, was not really sure of the
final # of emails sent. Also, on that webpage - you show the content of an
email. Was that actually the email you sent out?

If so, Ouch - considering what you wrote, and point them to a DB access
form, where they can pull up the Info that YOU have stored about them - I
can't imagine someone reading that would be very Comfy with it! Just

Re: Unemployed Destitute FoxPro Guy

2023-10-30 Thread Kurt Wendt
Hey Virgil,

Sorry I didn't respond to this earlier. It got dumped into my SPAM Folder -
and I just now saw it.

Gotta say - getting a list like this from an unknown source - it all sounds
VERY Sketchy. And, I see its really a list of like recruiters but for
Foreign workers in the USA. So, as you stated on that webpage that has the
list - true American workers will probably get Ignored. But, I'm going to
give it a shot - as I did see one listing for a recruiter in the SoCal area.

Re: FW: SQL Upsize

2023-10-05 Thread Kurt Wendt
Hey there Graham,

Now, I know this is going to be more of a WAG or a total Shot-in-the-Dark,
Butt...

Also, I will admit - I am not familiar with the exact process you're
attempting to do. I did try something similar MANY Years ago, admittedly -
back in like 2012. Anyway...

So, my question is this - did your Process at least create the Database
files in SQL - and SOME of the records did make it into the Database? If
so, why not push the records into SQL Databases from FoxPro after the SQL
databases were already created?

Now, I know - it's Not Addressing your original problem. But, I figured I
would throw some suggestions out there...

Unemployed Destitute FoxPro Guy

2023-10-03 Thread Kurt Wendt
I know I have not posted much here in the past few years. Life has been a
Lot of Ups & Downs in the past few years. I even had what I considered to
be my "Dream Job".

But, alas- Essentium essentially Imploded a couple months ago - Sadly.
Letting almost everyone go from CA site - then they vacated the building
last week. Although the TX HQ continues to operate.

I've been struggling to find work. Already applied to like 65-70 jobs in
past 2 months - and so far, got no positive response nor Any interviews. So
- yeah, super frustrated! I even applied to several FoxPro jobs, but still
a no go!

Figured I would reach out to folks here - in case anyone knows of any
opportunities!

Thanks in advance,
Kurt

2017-11-14 Thread Kurt Wendt
Hey Mike,

Thanks for posting this. I don't think I've ever been to this Wait But Why
website before. The comics at the start of this Elon posting/article are really
hysterical. And, I happen to be a HUGE fan of Elon - and am currently reading
that Bio book mentioned in this website.

Am going to pass this to some of the folks here at work to check out this link.

Myself - I started on an Apple II and a Commodore Pet 1200 (I think that's the
# for it), as well as on a TRS-80.

RE: How many of you use foreign key constraints and References in your database schema?

2017-11-01 Thread Kurt Wendt
Interesting discussion - considering a situation here at my job just
today/yesterday.

An email from a manager claiming that since this one employee is no longer with
the co. (although the email was late since the guy left about 4 weeks ago) -
was asking to have this User removed from these various systems. So - I
responded yesterday that I had deleted the user record from this one system.

Then - this buddy of mine, another programmer here - he was out yesterday, so
he asks me about the deletion of the record. He was worried that the deletion
of the record would cause problems if there are FK constraints! I told him he
need not worry - since for the most part in the system I did it - there really
are mostly no FK's in there. Of course, I know there are a couple - but,
nothing that would be impacted by the removal of a user from a table.

So - yes - I can relate.

Hey Woody - nice to hear from you. I can surely relate to your job hours. I
leave every morning at 6:40am - commute mostly by trains @ nearly 4.5 Hrs round
trip - and arrive back to my place in the evenings at 7:05pm (or 19:05). So,
yeah - nearly a 12.5 Hr day. Not much time left for me personally during the
week. Although - on the upside - since 3/4 of my time is on the Long Island
Railroad - I can actually work on my personal 3D CG projects on the train, or
even do e-mails.

Anyway - best of luck to you on your current job situation.

Kurt

In the meantime I checked the 60-age mark, managed to survive 5 years as a
freelancer (after the breakdown of the ProLib companies in 2009), and 2 years
ago I changed back into employment. They offered me some obscene amount of
money to get me onboard to manage and enhance their inhouse software. Finally I
couldn't resist, even after sleeping over that decision
for three nights.. Thus now I find myself in a 9 to 18 job, with driving
86km each morning and evening (which means starting at 7:30 and returning at
19:30), but I'm very happy with my salary (and 30 days of payed vacations

XOJO doesn't support Android development yet. Xamarin does which is write once
and portable class libraries allow you to reuse a lot of your base.

It makes it worse! It's the number one reason I don't like Python!

I was recently writing some Python code on my Raspberry PI.

How to Enable the NotPetya/Petna/Petya Vaccine

To vaccinate your computer so that you are unable to get infected with the
current strain of NotPetya/Petya/Petna (yeah, this naming is annoying), simply
create a file called perfc in the C:\Windows folder and make it read only. For
those who want a quick and easy way to perform this task, Lawrence Abrams has
created a batch file that performs this step for you.

For a list like ProFox, where the ability to interact in real time, or at least
its email equivalent, is really useful when trying to solve a problem, Digest
Mode is probably not a good idea.

There are lists where timeliness is less crucial, though, and seeing their
contents once a day is fine. As Kurt pointed out, it's incumbent on the digest
recipient to format responses properly.

Well, I replied to this 8 hours ago, but my reply didn't make it.

I said that "anything I say is considered [OT]". I didn't think that was
offensive but . . .

Maybe the list has a filter that stops anything with [OT] in the body text, or
something. It ain't easy being green . . .

No, it was a test to see if it would help with some ISPs that are blocking
ProFox emails. I changed it back, so you should start seeing them back in the

You're postings do tend to make me chuckle!

By the way - I checked out that tool on CodePlex - and it ROCKS It does
Exactly what I needed to do - so - problems ALL Solved!

So - in that regards - seems I WILL have this done Quick, Accurate (cause I do

RE: [NF] URGENT Request - MailMerge w/PDF

2017-05-25 Thread Kurt Wendt
Gosh Ted - that's a "Nice" thought!

Correct - its not really a VFP project. Just need a way to get data from Excel
onto a PDF form that is already digitally signed.

Not sure how I gave you the idea my co. here is Cheap. Hmmm...They are a
very professional co. in a fancy building here at the bottom of Manhattan. So -
nope - they aren't cheap. If they need to purchase a tool to do it - then they
will.

There were instructions online - but, it turns out it was a bit BS - since it
claims it could only do 1 doc at a time. Thus - if I have 1000 records in the
Excel file - I would have to do the process 1000 times - which, yeah - is total
BS. Hard to believe someone actually posted that answer as a reply to someone
else with an almost Identical request to mine!

I'm going to look into the CodePlex thing right now...

Thoughts? Boy, are you in trouble!

Okay, so [NF] means Not Fox, so you don't want to hear about the 42 ways to do
this in VFP. The CodePlex code may be worth trying out; some of the people on
their forum report it works for them.

It seems to me you're looking at the classic IT conundrum: Fast, cheap,
accurate: pick two. If you want it fast and accurate, it won't be cheap. If you
want it cheap and accurate, it won't get done fast.
If you want it cheap and fast, it won't be accurate. And IIRC, your employer is
big on cheap. And fast. So...

Otherwise, you're looking at a specialized tool. Years ago, I worked with a
client that used OmniForm (now from ScanSoft) to mail merge their internal data
onto government-supplied forms. ScanSoft may have a solution for you, although
I'm not familiar with their current product lines.

Adobe are the people who invented PDF, and likely have some tools that would
work for you. If this truly is a one-off job, and not a "we'll ask you to do
this every 6 months, as an emergency," it might be cheaper to search for an
Adobe professional who could bang this out.
Searching online, it seems like a lot of Adobe products can mail merge via
ODBC, which is likely what you want.

Random surfing turned up: https://www.evermap.com/automailmerge.asp,
no idea if it works, but $149 is reasonable.

I thought there was a way to do this using CutePDFPro; I've used it to create
the data-fillable PDF form templates, but I don't see a solution that includes
merge-from-database.

Good luck!

2017-05-25 Thread Kurt Wendt
Alan - as I wrote in the original posting - the PDF Files come from a Client.
Its also Digitally Signed. On that PDF - they need to have name and addresses
on the PDF - based upon data from an Excel file. Thus a mail merge. But, yeah -
PDF already exists! It is NOT something that I can generate from VFP - so, VFP
is NOT involved - thus why I posted as [NF].

Not clear on what you're trying to do - are these actual PDF forms or do you
just need to put data into an existing vanilla PDF?

If it's any help I did some code recently to add a customer signature captured
from a signature pad to a PDF invoice. One of the methods I investigated was
generating the invoice first and then merging the signature graphic in. It used
the free Debenu Quick PDF Lite Library

which has support for merging graphics into PDFs. Ultimately I didn't end up
going down this route but here's the business end of it FWIW. You might need
the paid version to merge text or fill PDF forms.

[NF] URGENT Request - MailMerge w/PDF

2017-05-24 Thread Kurt Wendt
Hey folks,

I have this crazy request here at work - and its super urgent. So - I need to
figure out how to do this - and do it FAST!

They have these spreadsheets of Data - and these PDF Files. I've done work
recently with putting field names in PDF files. But, now I have to merge it
with data from an Excel file. The other stuff I've been working on - its NOT
time sensitive - and for that people have .Net code and pulling data from SQL.
This new project is really a One-Shot-Deal!

Doing a Google search I came up with some PDF Mail Merge utility that resides
on CodePlex - and I see CodePlex so far is STILL running (although I looked
thru recently archive postings since I knew that CodePlex was recently
discussed about shutting down).

So - this PDF Mail Merge utility on CodePlex - is it really the easiest way to
go? I'm still researching on Google to see how to do this particular mail merge.

Any thoughts on this??

TIA!

Ed - yeah - the CK Video clip is pretty darned funny - and I can also relate to

Was also reading your blog post - and saw your comment about idea on redesign

BELIEVE that some exotic handle bar designs already exist - even some may be
specific for your problem. On the other hand - I could actually prototype

Ted - you bring up some interesting points.

I'm on another forum besides this one - and many of you I am sure can guess
what kind of forum it is. And, if your 1st guess was for Bachelors and meeting
women - you'd be wrong. So - yeah - it's about 3D Printing.

Well - there is a chap on there - he was very well known in the beginning when
the forum started - his knickname was Wing Commander. He's located down under
in Australia. I actually did a Skype call with him a couple years ago. A Very
interesting chap indeed.

So - at one point - this project he was working on - for which he used 3D
Printing to produce some of the parts - in particular - I remember the pedals
he had 3D Printed. His project - a type of bike that's a stand up unit. It's
like you are walking or jogging when riding the Bike. Its supposedly less
strenuous on the body that jogging. And, although it's not a solution for Ed -
the discussion here just reminded me of WC's product design!

cuffs, sleep apnea, fading eyesight, bad knees, diminished hearing, etc. -- and
that's just me! A good friend says "Old age is not for the faint of heart."

Inevitable, probably, but certainly working your medical providers to refer you
to physical or occupational therapy when available. I've had OTs come up with
some good adaptations over the years.

I hope you can find some accommodations that will let you continue to cycle. A
number of friends have moved from road bikes to slower-speed trekking and even
upright cruisers, "don't go too fast, but they go pretty far." I live near the
foothills to the White Mountains, and swear some of my short rides are more
vertical than horizontal, but I enjoy getting out and getting some fresh air

Also, I don't know if there's anything local, but another friend, a well-known

Kurt,

You should be able to right click the thumbnail that shows the debug window.

Select Move, press one of the arrow keys once, then start moving the mouse
without pressing a button.
The window should appear, and you should be able to place it where you want.

Then click the mouse button to let it go and you'll be good to go.

VFP menu, clicked on Debugger under Tools. But, the Debug window does NOT
appear on the screen! However, if I click on the Fox icon at the bottom of my
screen (and I have Two sessions of VFP currently open) - it display 3 small
windows - 2 VFP sessions - and the 3rd small window is the Debug window. But,
if I click on it - it does NOT go full size on my screen.

I find this VERY Weird - and have NO Clue as to why it's happening. FYI - I'm
running VFP 9 SP2 on Win7 Pro 64-bit.

RE: VFP9SP2 report error with _pagetotal variable

2017-03-27 Thread Kurt Wendt
The problem as I see it - is how can VFP predict full length of the report at
the start? Many things are dependent on the data - even to the point of things
like starting a new grouping on a new page - which could cause a gap at a
bottom of a page. Unless, of course, VFP can internally run the report without
you seeing it - in like a 1st pass - so that it can properly determine total #
of pages! Anyway - those are my thoughts on the matter...

Although - truthfully - I have even done much in the way of reports for years.
The one system I worked on here had "reports" - but, they were ALL just Excel
files. The other system I still currently support - it has reports - but, they
just work and have not needed ANY Modifications in the past nearly 2 years
since I have been support this system.

The MSDN suggests your string to print it is too complicated to parse and
recognize that _PAGETOTAL is being invoked, and to force VFP to run the report
in two-pass mode. The IIF() near the end of the article should resolve:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa977060(v=vs.71).aspx

HWP's What's New in VFP8 also has some good suggestions.

RE: VFP9SP2 report error with _pagetotal variable

2017-03-27 Thread Kurt Wendt
Mike - I believe this is a VERY Common problem and has been covered here on the
forum a number of times over the years. As I know I had the problem in the past
as well. I don't think VFP can truly generate the total page count until AFTER
the report is completed. So - what people have suggested in the past - which I
think I did once - is to run the report Twice. The 1st time around it will
generate the total # of pages. Then you capture that value and then USE it when
printing the actual report the 2nd time. Maybe something like the 1st time
around the report is generated but goes to a PDF file or something like that.
Although - that part is just a WAG on my part...

See https://www.screencast.com/t/8bj9GNQk for what's happening.
Outermost group is CUST_ID. In Report Writer, Data Grouping tab, I've selected
Group starts on NEW PAGE NUMBER 1 (the last radio option). I must admit I've
never used this option before; most of my reports are always the New Line or
New Page option.

I'm using this expression in my footer to produce what you see: "Page "
+ allt(str(_pageno)) + " of " + allt(str( _pagetotal))

Obviously the _pagetotal internal variable is not getting set correctly.

Ideas on how to fix? tia!

RE: New Excel BREAKS Prior Working Automation!

2017-03-27 Thread Kurt Wendt
To let people know my resolution. I circumvented the whole cut commands.
Instead, I captured the values from each cell and put them in an Array. Then,
from the area - I inserted them into the new spreadsheet a cell at a time using
".value=". The other tricky part is that I had to capture all the values from
the 1st spreadsheet BEFORE I opened/created the New spreadsheet. When I didn't
do that - that's what was causing part of the problems...

You stated that the code worked on a computer that it did not work on
normally. Something about running the debugger did it. It is possible that
I/O had something to do with it. Maybe, it has to be explicit. Some forms of
the wait command will not wait, such as:
   wait "Hello!" window nowait

What you are looking for is a condition that will break the problem.
*Then*, you refine it.

I may be telling you what you already know, but do so in case you have

Tracy - just knowing that LISA order isn't quite enough. The minutiae I was
after was specifically the order of firing between the Form and the Objects on
the Form. Since the Inits of the objects happens first and THEN the Form - I
know the code change would then work! And, it did the 1st time round.

You stated that the code worked on a computer that it did not work on

Gene - thanks again for your feedback - and your humor.

So - I am trying to press onwards with this problem today. The Kludge I
mentioned before - was to literally read EACH Cell from the Source spreadsheet
- then push that value into the proper cell of the Target spreadsheet. And,
here's where it gets REALY Strange.

If I run this operation on MY regular work PC - it works fine. I even stepped
thru the code - to check the value of the " Val_2_Copy" var. - and it has a
proper value. However, on the machine that I Remote into - which has Excel 2013
instead of 2010 (which mine has) - the value of the " Val_2_Copy" var. actually
contains NULL! WTF?!?! That's Nuts - doesn't make Sense - all due to the Excel
version.

Anyway - here is the specific code/kludge which I am attempting to use to copy
of the data of the Cells:
FOR Col_No = 0 TO 3  && Columns A thru D
Column_Code = CHR(65 + Col_No)
FOR Row_Cntr = 1 TO rowcount && This is the Dest File Rows
Source_Row = Row_Cntr + 6
Source_range = '"'+Column_Code +
ALLTRIM(STR(Source_Row))+'"'
Dest_range = '"'+Column_Code +
ALLTRIM(STR(Row_Cntr))+'"'
oWorkBook.Activate
Val_2_Copy =
oExcel.ActiveSheet.RANGE(_range).VALUE
oWorkBook2.Activate
oExcel.ActiveSheet.RANGE(_range).VALUE =
Val_2_Copy
ENDFOR
ENDFOR

RK - of course! That's what the original code essentially does!

So - here is a cut down version of the original code (yeah - I really should
have posted this initially, was going to do so - but I forgot to include it!):
oWorkBook.Activate
rangeA = '"A7:D'+ALLTRIM(STR(lastrow))+'"'
oRange = oExcel.ActiveSheet.RANGE()
oRange.SELECT
oRange.COPY()

oWorkBook2.Activate
oExcel.ActiveSheet.Paste

jdate=ALLTRIM(STR(ROUND(julian(DTOC(DATE())),0)))
mCSVname = csvpath+'BO'+jdate
mCSVname = FORCEEXT(mCSVname,"csv")

oExcel.ActiveWorkBook.SAVEAS (mCSVname,xlCSV)
oExcel.ActiveWorkBook.CLOSE(.F.) && the .F. parameter will prevent the
dialogue box

Good afternoon fellow ProFoxers!

I hope you are faring well - for those of you like me in the NE USA hit by the
storm. They sent out emergency communications yesterday from my job - saying
office would be closed today - yet, instead of FEET of Snow - I woke up and all
the Rain/sleet seems to have melted it down to like 3 or 4 inches tall at best!
Well - alas - I digress.

So - here's the deal. Recently I had a User get a problem with a particular
option in an application - something that had always worked. Stranger still -
as the old saying goes "It works on MY Machine" is also occurring - since the
problem would NOT occur on my machine. Even went a step farther, as he had the
gal sitting next to him try the same option - and it failed for her. I then
went farther. I logged into another machine, and it worked. Went to a QA gal -
she tried it - and it work. In the end - a buddy of mine in Systems who deals
with networking and user support - he had like 7 different users try it - and
it failed for all of them. In the end - his deduction was problem being tied to
Excel - as I am running 2010 - and the systems experiencing the problem are
2013.

Short explanation of the actual problem. This app - reads in an Excel file
using Automation. Grabs the data in the header area of spreadsheet and fills in
var's. Then it takes the main data - a bunch of rows/columns - and pushes the
data into a CSV file that it creates via Automation. The 2nd phase shows a
screen w/Header info - and displays name of the CSV file. Then asks if you want
to Proceed with processing the data. Here in lies the problem. In my case -
when I run the option - the CSV file is fine. But, for the users that are
having the problem - the CSV file is EMPTY!

Now - before reporting this problem to you all here - I've been doing a bunch
of research - as well as Testing various options. I even looked at a prior
thread here in this forum - as it was VERY Similar to my own conundrum:
"Copy Excel worksheet to another workbook". And, one of the tricks I noticed
that was mentioned is that after Copying the range of Cells from the FROM Excel
file - and before Pasting into the TO Workbook (that will become the CSV file)
- that it was suggested to CLOSE the From Workbook. So - I did that - but, then
I get the following error message being thrown:"The object invoked has
disconnected from its clients."

I even tried a similar operation by hand (as I have remote access to another PC
in my office that has Excel 2013 - so I can test for the problem) - by doing
the Copy of the Cells, Closed the workbook - then went to the Other workbook
and did Paste - and it worked - NO Error and data was pasted!

As such - I'm rather stumped! It's really SUCH a Drag when changes to Office
now crash out Code that previously worked.

A fellow developer has suggested another Kludge - as Gene so adeptly states the
term - which is to do a more manual pasting of cell data one by one - literally
assigning the values to the Cells instead of by doing the Paste command. I did
do a test by simply assigning "Hello World" to a single cell - and that DID
work. But, I'd rather a more Elegant solution AND something that knows what the
Actual problem is and can fix it with less code. Especially since I worry that
this problem may run DEEPER than the users think - and that a BUNCH of other
similar options in this application may ALSO Start to fail for all these users!

TIA!

RE: SQL Backend Question

2017-02-02 Thread Kurt Wendt
Hello Paul,

Welcome to the fold. Like you - I've been working w/Fox since Foxbase+. Where I
work - they have been trying to phase out all the old FoxPro systems (which are
all currently VFP 9 systems) - and replace them with new systems based upon VB
or C# and .Net. As it is - the core systems that were/are still in use (one of
those systems was JUST Phased out to a new system yesterday - sadly it was a
system I supported but I'm not involved with the new replacement system) - all
have SQL as the main data files - although processing does use temp DBF files.

I suspect that some here may suggest using something else to do development -
like C# and .Net or some such tech. Will be interesting to see what other folks
say. Although, I suspect that for you this late in the game - it may not make
such great sense to completely switch to a newer tech!

Subject: SQL Backend Question

Ok, I've lurked here long enough. I've been subscribed to this list for several
months and I have thoroughly enjoyed the questions and answers that have come
through during that time. I'm even a little star-struck when I see the names of
Foxpro experts that I have depended upon for years to help educate me to be a
better Foxpro programmer. Thank you all for all you do in this list group. Now
it is time for me to ask what is probably going to sound like a dumb question
coming from someone who has been using Foxpro since Foxlan but I figure I have
nothing to lose here and everything to gain.

For the past few years I have been honing my skills as a developer of data
interfaces and until recently, the few full-fledged data entry projects I've
build relied upon native Foxpro dbf files. However, my interface work has been
depending more and more upon using SQL pass-through language to issue queries
against various SQL backend systems and I have been pretty successful at
retrieving data from various systems and then re-formatting that data for other
uses.

For a while now, I've been contemplating building a data-entry and maintenance
system from the ground up that depends completely upon using a SQL database
(Firebird, MySQL, MS SQL, Postgres or something similar). My problem is that I
have all these data handling classes built into a couple of simple toolbars
that I can drop on form and provide the standard Add, Delete, Undo, Save and
Exit functionality as well as a vcr toolbar to skip between records. These
tools include all of the code necessary to detect changes enable various
buttons based on conditions, etc. stuff we are all familiar with.

Now I'm trying to wrap my head around the whole concept of changing the way I
depend upon Foxpro to handle much of the behind the scenes table activity and
create a new user interface that conforms to the how SQL works while
maintaining as much of the familiar functionality I'm so happy with in Foxpro.

Does anyone have any recommendations for where I should go to learn more about
the best practices for developing user interfaces that work efficiently with
SQL backends, and what do I need to know about how to collect data and insert
it into the sql tables, detect user changes to flag for saving data. In some
software they seemed to have ditched the Add, Delete, Undo, Save, Exit concept
to just save everytime there is keystroke.
And in other systems, they keep parts of that old style of user interaction.
Are there any libraries that can be purchased or downloaded to handle some of
the behind the scenes data manipulation for SQL that I can use to learn how
this stuff should work.

For something that seems to be easy, I'm having a hard time letting go of my
20+ years of doing things the Foxpro way to make the transition.

Any thoughts?

I'm looking for a web-based photo album I can share with a few friends and
relatives in order to ID folks in a photo album from the 1940s I'm digitizing.
I'm not comfortable with posting them to Facebook, but I like the style of
ID'ing faces it uses. Ideally, I'd limit access to a list of folks who could
comment and download but not delete.

Anyone got suggestions, experiences to share?

Chatting about old technology reminded me of the old days when we had to use
TSR programs like Borland Sidekick to get around the 640Mb memory limit. Oh how
times have changed!!

Funnily enough, I still have a 20Mb ... yes 20Mb Seagate RLL drive running in a
286 with 128Kb (Kb NOT Mb) of memory running MsDos 3.0 and stacker software to
make the 20Mb look like 40Mb!! All it does is simply routes comms packets from
the Radio Amateur network onto my LAN. It has been turned on almost
continuously since 1986 and never faltered apart from a couple of mains outages.

I've blown up a 300MB drive when installing it, back when that was a seriously
big drive, but that's it.
