John, what port did you change to? I use 465 for my CDO email, but
apparently 587 is generally preferred.

Many thanks! I tried that and it failed but a bit more research showed me I
had to change the port after which it worked fine - much to my relief.

Although, I will admit - I thought Red had the most RAM!

Will also say, I almost had to cringe when reading the article around the comic

bother to proof read it for him, as in - the folks that run the site! Yikes...

I'm not sure why you're having to go to such lengths. When I double-click a
PJX or PJT file in Windows Explorer, the project automatically opens up in

Hi all

I have been toying on and off over several years with a method of opening
VFP with a MODIFY command when double-clicking a file in Explorer. For
example, double-clicking on a PJX in Explorer should open VFP with the
command MODIFY PROJECT  NOWAIT.

I am almost there, maybe. At the moment everything is in C:\Temp

ConFig.FPW contains

Command = C:\Temp\FoxOpen.PRG

*FoxOpen.PRG is constructed on-the fly by a PowerShell script TEST.PS1 as
follows:

TEST.PS1

Param([string]$a)

$file=Get-Item "$a"

$Extension = $file.Extension.ToUpper()

$Command = ""

switch ($Extension)

{

.PJX

{

$Command = "Modify Project '"+ $a + "' NOWAIT"

}

   # Other cases follow

}

Set-Content -Path C:\Temp\FoxOpen.PRG -Value $Command

& "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9\vfp9.exe"
-CC:\Temp\Config.FPW

I have tested this in a PowerShell console like this

PS C:\Temp> C:\Temp\Test.PS1 where is a fully qualified
path to a PJX, enclosed in single quotes

I have also tested in a COMMAND window like this

C:\Temp> PowerShell C:\Temp\Test.PS1  again where  is a
fully qualified path to a PJX, enclosed in single quotes

So far, so good. Now for how to implement the shell command. My registry
settings are as follows:

Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

PJXFile  (Default)  REG-SZ Project (FoxPro)

Shell (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

Modify project (Default) REG_SZ (value not
set)

Command   (Default)
REG_SZ "POWERSHELL C:\Temp\Test1.PS1" "%1"

However, double-clicking on a PJX results in:

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have
the appropriate permissions to access the item.

It seems as if I am nearly there, so any suggestions will be very gratefully
received.  Many thanks

Hi all (Happy New Year)
I have two PRGs with about 60 differences between them. I am looking for an
editor that will allow me to view and edit them side by side. I have
CodeCompare but I can't seem to get on with it and I don't have time to get
to grips with it. Basically I want a one way copy-and-paste facility (copy
from one file, paste into the other). If it highlighted differences that
would be a bonus but not absolutely essential. All suggestions most
welcome.

[NF] Server OS in a VM on a client OS box

2018-08-15 Thread Michael Glassman
Hi, all! I need some advice as to whether or not this will work.

Our company runs shipping software (ProShip Server) on a Windows Server 2008
(not R2) computer. Unfortunately, the system requirements for this software
have been recently upgraded, so that I need a 2012, 2012 R2, or 2016 server
instead. As getting a new server would take several weeks to order and
provision, I am wondering if I can install one of these server versions as a
virtual machine on a spare Windows 7 machine that I already have.

I've never tried this on a production server. Will it work? Are there any
pitfalls I need to be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

RE: "An IF | ELSE | ENDIF statement is missing"

2017-07-13 Thread Michael Glassman
Errant is correct. It has two meanings as an adjective:

1. erring or straying from the proper course or standards.
"he could never forgive his daughter's errant ways"
synonyms: offending, guilty, culpable, misbehaving, delinquent,
lawbreaking

2. archaic/literary: traveling in search of adventure.
"that same lady errant," "a knight errant"
synonyms: traveling, wandering, itinerant, roaming, roving, voyaging

Apart from all of the above, my pet hate is mistakenly using ERRANT instead
of ERRING. ERRING means in error and ERRANT means on a mission (as in "A
Knight Errant"). I'm sure as children we all had to run ERRANDS (same root).

Use a dot to as a delimiter to specify the end of the macro expansion when
you can't leave a space between the macro and the rest of the command, so:

cTable ="Customer"
   && expands to "Tablekey" and fails, while
  && expands to "Table.key" likely what you want.

Why not macro substitution?

Note that the two dots are mandatory.

In many cases it is better to use macros because they are expanded and
interpreted only one time.

For example in sql query, in filter condition, in for clauses.

I have been asked to give a talk to a local pensioner's organisation on
internet security. One of the points I will make is that you need a good
anti-virus. I have used M$ Security Essentials and now Windows Defender on
Win 10 for some years without any problems, largely as a result of
recommendations here. In a recent magazine article in UK they were saying
that Defender is not very good only picking up 75% of viruses in a test.
They were advocating Kaspersky; the fact that they were offering it at a
discount but were undoubtedly getting a cut may have influenced their
decision. What anti-virus are you using? Do you still recommend Defender?
Any thoughts or comments? I will be recommending one to the pensioners so
will be going for one of the free ones.

Thanks

RE: Unit quantities

2016-12-20 Thread Michael Glassman
I think the answer depends on whether or not your client needs to know the
number of apples on hand at any given time. If not, I'd recommend having
separate lines items for singles, cartons, and pallets. (This is what we do
in our publishing company, where the commodity is non-perishable books, not
apples.) But if the quantity on hand is important, then you need to go the
two factor route.

Just my two cents' worth.

In my accounting/invoicing system, clients create product items.

Let's say you sell Apples
You can sell
single apples
apples in a carton (e.g. 25 apples per carton) cartons of apples on a pallet
(e.g. 50 cartons per pallets)

I would like to know how YOU handle the Quantity management.
Do you create 3 different stock items or do you force people to enter 2
factors at invoice time. Qty and Factor, where factor can be (say) Single,
Carton or Pallet.

When you *see* your product profile,
do you see 1125 apples, X cartons and Y pallets and Z singles?

I hope I've explained this satisfactorily.
If its NF, please forgive me.

RE: [NF] Arago

I'm not certain, Gene. The last paragraph of the review refers to Arago's
"true .EXE compiler," implying that FoxPro's wasn't. But the only
distinction the review actually gives is that Arago's compiled file sizes
were substantially smaller than FoxPro's.

Coincidentally enough, the same issue of PC Magazine has a comparative
review of five Xbase development systems, including FoxPro 2.0, Clipper, and
dBASE III/VI. FoxPro won hands down! From the Google Books left menu,
search for "Xbase Development Systems" in the same issue. Makes for very
nostalgia-inducing reading.

RE: VFP Help File Problem

2016-12-04 Thread Michael Glassman
You mention getting "save the target" dialogs that aren't working when
trying to save the help file. The only way I know to get that dialog is to
right-click. But in the case of CodePlex, you need to left-click to save
files.

On my Windows 7 machines, when I left-click on
http://vfpx.codeplex.com/downloads/get/861801 in this email chain, my
default browser (Chrome) gives me Save/Save as options in the form of a
Windows Explorer window. I get the same (albeit after a three second delay)
if I paste that link into the Chrome address bar.

If I paste it into IE, then I get a save dialog at the bottom of the window
that provides the same ability to save the compressed help file.

So what happens when you left-click the above link or paste that URL into
your browser's address bar?

RE: Dealing with Extraneous Parameters

2016-11-22 Thread Michael Glassman
Have you thought about passing your parameters in a single array, Gene?
That way you can test to see if you have received the correct number of
parameters using alen() and empty().

PROCEDURE TmpPrint
PARAMETERS laParams
liArray_Len = alen(laParams)
IF liArray_Len < min_param
* Too few parameters
  ENDIF
IF liArray_Len > max_param
FOR i = max_param + 1 TO liArray_Len
IF !empty(laParams[i])
* Too many parameters
  ENDIF
  NEXT
* Just right!

This also circumvents the limit on the number of parameters that can be
passed.

VFP, unlike some languages, is intolerant of excess parameters. To catch
this:

1. Use error handling in the CALLING program, not the CALLED program with
the Parameters statement, or

2. Write a very tolerant program that accepts all of the parameters you can
throw at it (varies by version) and throws an error after testing them with
PCOUNT().

(At one point, I know the number of parameters was 26, since that's the
number of red playing cards in a standard deck. But I think that limit was
raised in the most recent version, as your testing
indicates.)

the originating form the filename and filesize created. I checked out the
FSIZE command but wondered if there was a better way to determine the
outputted file size? These files are being created on a network drive, most

RE: Mopier mode printers and multiple collated copies

2016-08-30 Thread Michael Glassman
I'm confused. Mopier mode by definition is a "mode that computer printers
may be switched on to that only allows them to print one copy of a document
at a time."
(https://www.reference.com/technology/mopier-mode-eeb403e4593478b4).  So why
are users expecting to be able to print multiple copies in the first
place???

If your users are on Windows 10 and need to disable mopier mode, there are
17-step instructions at
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2795563/disable-mopier-mode-windows.htm
l. There are also 8-step directions for other operating systems.

Subject: Mopier mode printers and multiple collated copies

Since the beginning of the month we have been getting phone calls from
customers with large copiers that are setup as network printers (or
networked all -in-one business class printers). They are no longer able to
print multiple copies to the copier using our old Crystal Reports 8.5. It
appears each collated report is sent to the printer as a separate print job.
Sometime, the printer will print 2 out of 10 copies. Many times, it only
prints the 1st copy.

If one does not collate, all the pages seem to print.

I'm able to reproduce this behavior in house on the Dell B3465dnf Laser MFP.

The only workaround we have been able to find, Save the report as a PDF (or
print it to a PDF printer). Then preview the report in the PDF viewer and
print it from there.

I don't see this behavior in another product that is using the
FoxyPreviewer. The product that uses Crystal Reports has over 200 reports,
and some 20 of the are crosstab reports. A few of the are very complicated
with multiple sub-reports. I do not see this being converted to VFP reports
to run in FoxyPreviewer.

More just getting this information out to others. But if someone has some
useful thoughts, I'll happily listen.

Thank you,
Tracy

Although totally against my principles where I would normally save the link

anyone who knows how I can drive the embedded Excel object in the same way

Ideally I want to query the embedded Excel and pull back a named range of

Any ideas?

Firstly I've seen a few (MozyPro in particular) hold a file handle on
DBF/FPT/CDX files if they're in the backup upload queue, which can interfere
with VFP.

Secondly VFP applications using DBF data are essentially a data set spread
over many files, hundreds in our case. Unless you can do a 'point in time'
backup when you know there is nobody in the system (like the traditional 3AM
tape backup approach) then how do you know if restored data is consistent?

RE: Bad getwordnum

2016-07-29 Thread Michael Glassman
I'm afraid I have to disagree with you, Fernando. The DO WHILE approach may
not be optimal, but it does work. If you have three consecutive commas, for
instance, the first two get changed to one comma on the first loop, leaving two
consecutive commas. On the second loop, those are changed to one comma.
Honest, the process works fine and executes very quickly in VFP. It's much
faster than having to test each and every array element to see if it is empty.

The "DO WHILE" approach is not optimal, not even exact, because you can have
more than 2 consecutive commas.

One optimal and exact approach is using ALINES() indicating the comma as the
separator and using the optional parameters to take out empty parameters, so
the final array have only non-empty values.
In the case that you want empty values too, then do not use the optional
parameters of ALINES().

The problem lies with consecutive commas. If you put a space between the
commas after the 2 and before the one in front of the 3, it works OK.

?GETWORDCOUNT("1,2, ,3")  && prints 4
?GETWORDNUM("1,2, ,3",1,",")  && prints "1"
?GETWORDNUM("1,2, ,3",2,",")  && prints "2"
?GETWORDNUM("1,2, ,3",3,",")  && prints " "
?GETWORDNUM("1,2, ,3",4,",")  && prints "3"

RE: Do prompt when starting EXE

2016-07-06 Thread Michael Glassman
Kent,

Christof's suggestion reminded me that Windows' own security settings can
cause this behavior as well. Launch Internet Options (from either the run
box, the networking center, or the tools menu in Internet Explorer). Click
on the Security tab, select Local intranet, click Sites, and click Advanced.
Add the Q: drive to the zone, and close everything up. That will tell
Windows that it's safe to run executables on that drive.

Thanks, I had not thought about a virus scanner. We have the program working
fine when mapped to the regular R: drive but they created a new Q: mapped
drive with a copy of the folder that is working. This new Q: mapped drive is
the one that has the problem. We get the same Do prompt when we try to run
any of our VFP9 programs from the Q: folder but they all work fine in the R:
folder.

Sounds very much like a virus scanner is trapping the EXE on the new Q:
mapped drive.

Thanks, we will check it out and report back if solved

Usually this is either a corrupted EXE or an EXE that is partially blocked
by a virus scanner.

A common issue with virus scanner is that the exclusion list only has the
mapped drive path, but the EXE is launched from an UNC path (or vice versa).

Mixing mapped drives and UNC paths can also lead to different App_Compat
flags in the registry that cause different behavior.

Some people consider programming languages to be religions:

Though we know it's far more important than that.

I'm definitely looking at this for running FoxPro apps!)

Gene, I'm quite familiar with the DOSBox site and forum, but again, never
looked up "printing" on it. I just saw the documentation that said printing
wasn't supported and stopped there!

Thanks for the recommendation of FreeDOS, Ted. I had forgotten about that

  The standard distribution of DOSBox does not support printer output.
The Implementors state repeatedly and pointedly that DOSBox is intended for
games. Since very few games use printers, printer support has not been
implemented.

  That stated, there are versions with printer support. I use one
(though not for FoxPro apps) called the DOSBox Magebuild. It is available
at http://home.arcor.de/h-a-l-9000/index.html and if you need any help
configuring it -- it was a bit of guesswork -- drop me a line.

   I have used DOSBox for several years. It has limits that nip at me
occasionally and there is a screen refresh quirk that is frustrating, but I
do get to run my 16-bit utilities.

Mike remember this suggestion, based on experience:

- You first create your VM according to what are you going to do with it.
In example, Windows uses +20 GB for it's OS plus continuous updates. I
normally create 40 GB VMs, trying to install just the neccesary stuff
- For better security and possibility of a smaller backup, you can create 1
Virtual Disk for the programs + OS, and other Virtual Disk for Data, using
it as slave, so you can backup just your data and not all your programs and
OS too.
- At the moment that you finish installing the OS and have it booting OK,
without installing anything else and powered off, you make the first
snapshot of it, so in the event that something goes wrong when configuring
it, you just recover your snapshot and start with a fresh OS again
- Then you install and configure things (programs, OS, features, etc), and
every time you get something working, take another snapshot, so you can
recover the last working one if neccesary
- Remember to add a good comment on every snapshot, so you know what you
have installed on each step.

Doing this, and in the worst case, you always can restore from your 1st
snapshot and get the fresh OS without any software installed, and do not
need to spend hours installing and configuring from the start.

Another goodie of separating Programs and Data disks, is that in the case
that a virus get inside your Programs VM, you just restore to the previous
snapshot I you can't desinfect with AV software and that's it! :D

Best Regards!

Mike,

I have the same situation, identical.

On my development workstation, Win7Pro, I have installed and set up my
FoxPro 2.0 DOS application with DOSBox .74 (noconsole) and it works great.
In fact, using DOSBox my FoxPro DOS app comes up immediately and there are
no intervening steps, no 2nd OS interface to deal with.

The data files in my setup are actually on a machine in another city,
accessed via VPN over the Intertube, and DOSBox handles it just fine (as a
mapped drive.) So, yes, shared files in a MANY-multi-user environment
(~250). I have not used this setup extensively with writing data...so it is
possible that updating (writing to) index files or data files might have
issues although I'm not sure why they would.

What I have NOT tried is printing from the DOSBox FoxPro DOS app. YMMV.

If it is a new install of Windows 10, the .NET Framework that is installed
by default is 4. In the control panel, where you would remove an installed

add the .NET Framework 3.x, which also installed the version your program

RE: Online Dues Payments

2016-04-05 Thread Michael Glassman
You shouldn't have to send or retrieve full tables to or from Authorize.net;
you can do individual transactions instead. Furthermore, you can even
process the transaction within your own app with a simple API call to
Authorize.net. Make sure you visit their developers' pages at

Subject: Online Dues Payments

Our membership app resides on a Rackspace server. It's a FoxPro app that
uses FoxPro free tables. Our client wants the ability to have members pay
dues online. We are looking into http://www.authorize.net/ for the
processing center.

Current Membership payment data needs to be available to the payment website
to be able to process the correct dues payments, as rates vary and late fees
may apply. At the end of the day we will import the transactions into our
app through a process within our FoxPro app.

Our idea is that our app creates a table of current membership information
which is sent (somehow) to the payment website. Members will use the
website to make dues payments. At the end of the day, the website app will
send the transaction data to our server on Rackspace (somehow) so we can
import the dues transactions. After processing the transactions, our app
will refresh the website data with current membership data.

We're not sure how to implement the "somehow" (i.e. send/receive data)
to/from the website that submits the payment to the processing center.
We're also open to other ideas. Our client's web developer says that there
are tools out there to do this, but our initial Google searches have not
come up any solutions thus far.

Here's a simple diagram of what we're trying to accomplish

Thanks in advance.

Peter,

We have run FoxBase+, FoxPro for DOS, VFP5, VFP9 RTM, and VFP9 SP2 apps on
Windows Server 2003 and 2008 without problem in a non-virtualized
environment. I copy database and index files to and from Windows XP, Vista,

Could your problem be with the copy method rather than the environment? Are
the tables and indexes being accessed or modified during the copy process?

Hi,

We are currently running a VFP9 SP2 app on a windows 2003 server, which has
been virtualised. We want to move to either 2008 server or preferably 2012
server. The app has a DBC and DBFs and has been running happily for over 10
years. The problem we have when transferring the data over to a virtualised
2008 or 2012 server is that we get index corruption once or more a day. We
then have to move the data back. We have tried a few different
configurations but do not know why this is happening.

I just want to check what servers people are using for their networked VFP
app and any problems (or not) they have had.

Please let me know what version of windows you are using and what version of
VFP and if the server is virtualised or not.

TIA

Peter

RE: Import/Export with CSV

2016-02-28 Thread Michael Glassman
Two points:
1)  Str(val( '12345.56'), 10, 5) only gives 4 decimal places because you
lose a place to the decimal point.  Using str(val( '12345.56'), 11, 5)
instead will work in the first example, but not in Sytze's second one.
2) Neither CSV no Excel support strict types. Either will always
interpret field content with only numbers, a single decimal point, or a
leading hyphen as numeric. The only way around this is to export an
additional character such as a tilde (~), pipe (|), or other characters that
don't ever appear in your data, then strip it out when importing back to
FoxPro.

The Supplier code could be letters and number, just letters, or just

The supplier code may be 12345.1234567890 It's nothing to do with decimal
point. It's a character.
If the code is ABC12345.1234567890 all is fine.

The import routine is append from file IMPFILE type csv

Of course, you may have your preferences. I know that I certainly do.
But you cannot honestly disparage something which has single-handedly
resulted in the internet as we know it. It may not be your thing, but
godammit lots of people have figured out how to make lots of cool stuff
happen that didn't exist before them.

I got into this business because it was always doing new cool things, and
each thing it was able to do was more impactful than the previous. I can
tell you that IBM is doing some incredible things with Linux on their System

So please enjoy where you are without feeling the need to knock other

RE: [NF] Two DHCP servers on a network - Changed to [NF]

2016-02-23 Thread Michael Glassman
Graham, Ted is correct that wi-fi devices will attach to whatever network or
DHCP provider to which they can secure a connection first. So the trick is
to allow them to only connect to one and not the other.

We have a very similar setup at our office. Our 48-port switch is the main
DHCP provider, and its IP address is 10.0.2.1. Our outside Internet
connection is on 10.0.2.2. The servers are on 10.0.2.4 and 10.0.2.5. All
of our end-users cabled devices have static IP addresses set between
10.0.2.10 and 10.0.2.223.

Also cabled to the switch are three wireless routers. Two of these are
password-protected and have their DHCP set to provide addresses 10.0.2.224
and above. The other wireless router is not password-protected and has its
DHCP set to provide addresses in the 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.255 range.

When an employee or visitor brings a new device into the office, they can
only connected to the open (192.168.1.x) network where get only an Internet
connection and cannot see any other devices or shared drives. Connecting
the wireless device to our main (10.0.2.x) network instead is a two-step
process.  First, we connect to one of the password-protected routers;
second, we move the password-protected connection higher in the device's
list of saved network connections than the unprotected network so that it
will be able to access other shared devices the next time it's brought to
the office.

HTH.

I think this is wishful thinking. On startup, the ethernet devices
essentially broadcast a plea over the network, "Who can give me an IP
address?" and pick one of the responders. IIRC, the first to answer, but no
guarantee who.

Is there a reason why you can't just turn off the DHCP server on the Win

Trust me, it's not TSFL. We have plenty of stupid people on our side of the

It's probably much more of a matter of "I don't have enough time to learn
all this *stuff*!" I've had times when I tried to juggle FoxPro and two

Subject: Re: [NF] Win 7 Update messing with network settings?

Ted,

The "blame me" line starts over there and extends around the
corner...welcome!

Changes...that's hard to not have happen on a network that includes 4
buildings and nearly 400 pieces of 'stuff' that somehow access the same
network, whether directly or via VPN, and a business that always seems to be
churning.

But, no, nothing that I would expect to have caused this. The only change
was that I removed two WIFI WAPs and isolated them on their own subnet with
private routers and WAN IPs. In other words, they "went away" as far as the
main data network was concerned. Other than that, people continue to bring
their own tablets and cellphones and try to connect in whatever way they can
dream up. (We seem to attract former Best Buy salespeople who are confident
they know everything there is to know about computers.)

No AD is involved since none exists, all drive sharing is via Linux Samba
(without AD). Everything is, or about 99% is, static IP, with a few devices
(IP phones, laptops) using DHCP. No server name change, no domain name
change/addition. Machines come and go every few days as they have problems
(PSUs fail, UPS fail, case fans annoy and get shut down).
With 300+ terminals it's "always something."

That's comforting to hear that you've at least seen this happen. I have
convinced myself it isn't human intervention, and it's not infection.
The one thing that is consistent is that all of the machines showing this
behavior were rebooted on the same day, 1/13/16. But, there are also many
other Win 7 Pro machines that were updated and rebooted on that date, that
have not tripped over this problem.

My best guess is that this was some odd alignment of a particular flavor of
NIC driver and updates kicking each other in the shins. Unless it continues,
I'm pretty confident I've found and fixed all of the affected systems and
I'm off to other issues. I just can't get rid of this nagging desire to
want to understand why these electronic gizmos do what they do...

Many thanks for the confirmation/feedback!

Has anyone else run into this in the last few days? (like since last
Tuesday)

I've had 10 or 12 Windows 7 Pro systems, so far, that have had their NIC IP
address settings switched from manually configured to DHCP. At first I
thought it was a fluke, but I keep finding more and more systems that this
has happened to. And there was a forced reboot update from MSoft last week.

I'm not suggesting nefarious activity, just that I have never seen this
happen before.

All of the systems are locked down with Admin accounts that use a password
that is not available to anyone but myself and one other person. Some of the
computers are running video display systems (kiosks)...not even touched by
users.

The one thing they all have in common is Windows 7 pro.

Anything happening like that to anyone else?

Thanks!

I do this all the time with fields that are all the same width, Jeff, but I
have no idea if it works on dissimilar width fields. To use this feature,
simply select the first field with your mouse, then shift-click the others,
after which dragging an edge to change a dimension of any one field changes
them all.

RE: Renaming Columns Problem

2015-11-11 Thread Michael Glassman
Gene,

I've found the very same inconsistency in VFP, MySQL, and three different MS
SQL Server versions.

I'd guess that all of these SQL systems total columns not one column at a
time (in which case your first query should work) but by one row at a time.
If that is indeed the case, then sumqty isn't defined until all rows have
been processed. When processing is complete, though, then avgunit exists,
and the output can be sorted by it.

HTH,
   Mike

Dear Vixens and Reynards:

  An innocent-looking query:
   select;
clcode,;
sum(basicchg+ovrhdfee) as totamount,;
sum(quantity) as sumqty,;
totamount/sumqty as avgunit;
   from cwkt;
   group by clcode;
   order by clcode
Unfortunately, it is not legal. Instead, I have to do:
   select;
clcode,;
sum(basicchg+ovrhdfee) as totamount,;
sum(quantity) as sumqty,;
sum(basicchg+ovrhdfee)/sum(quantity) as avgunit;
   from cwkt;
   group by clcode;
   order by clcode
(The change is in the definition of avgunit.)

  Apparently, I can not use the totamount and sumqty names in the
columns clause. Oddly enough, I can use them in the order by clause (and
maybe elsewhere).  This is legal:
   select;
clcode,;
sum(basicchg+ovrhdfee) as totamount,;
sum(quantity) as sumqty,;
sum(basicchg+ovrhdfee)/sum(quantity) as avgunit;
   from cwkt;
   group by clcode;
   order by avgunit

  Is this really how it is, or am I overlooking something?

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Fred, I second not only the recommendation for Brother color laser printers
but also the bloatware issue. The trick is to never install the printer
from the accompanying CD! Instead, go to their support site
(http://support.brother.com/), find the printer, and download not the Full
Driver Software Package but the just the Printer Driver instead.
You'll get a clean install without all the other troublesome software.

By the way, never let Windows automatically install the drivers for a
Brother printer itself; it's never come out right in my experience. Always
install the drivers manually.

Re: FoxPro/DOS 2 Lines per record in a browse?

2015-03-31 Thread Michael Glassman
This is an example of FoxPro’s (both DOS and Windows) inconsistency and
quirkiness. Calculated columns in BROWSE, CHANGE, and EDIT commands must
always be assigned to a new variable name. Calculated columns in LIST and
DISPLAY statements must NOT be assigned to a new variable.

Just to keep us on our toes, I suppose.

Try:

Essential, you're creating a calculated field, fred.

Re: record position

2015-03-23 Thread Michael Glassman
Rafael,

I’m glad that Koen’s solution works for you, but it seems like it would be very
slow if 2/3 of the records meet “mycondition.” I prefer to create a file that
contains the value of the index key of the main file every 1% of the way
through. Then regardless of how one gets to a record in the indexed file, the
value of the index key just has to be compared to the reference file.

It makes more sense with sample code:

CLOSE ALL
USE MyFile ORDER 1
DO Create_File_Position_Table Call only when file must be rebuilt

SEEK BROWN
? alltrim(str(Find_File_Position())) + % from top

PROCEDURE Create_File_Position_Table
DIMENSION aFilePos(101)
nWorkArea = select(0)
SET SAFETY OFF
CREATE TABLE FilePos FREE (Key_Field C(10))
SET SAFETY ON
SELECT (nWorkArea)
GO TOP
APPEND BLANK IN FilePos
REPLACE FilePos.Key_Field WITH replicate( , 10)
SKIP reccount() / 100 - 1
FOR i = 2 TO 100
APPEND BLANK IN FilePos
REPLACE FilePos.Key_Field WITH left(evaluate(key()), 10)
SKIP reccount() / 100
  NEXT
APPEND BLANK IN FilePos
REPLACE FilePos.Key_Field WITH replicate(z, 10)
RETURN

FUNCTION Find_File_Position
nWorkArea = select(0)
cKey_Content = evaluate(key())
SELECT FilePos
LOCATE ALL FOR cKey_Content = Key_Field
SELECT (nWorkArea)
RETURN recno(FilePos) – 1

 I have this cursor containing a list of clients.

 If I do not set any order (set order to 0), the records are shown in
 physical order, so if I move the pointer 100 positions down, the record
 position is given by recno(), in this case it would be 100.

 However, if I order the records by company name and move the record
 pointer 100 records down, even though the position would be 100 records
 from the top, recno() is not going to tell me where I am.

 I need to show that I am in the 100dhs position from the top, regardless
 of the order.
 I am dealing with a table containing 3 million records, and the
 requirement is that the record position be shown very fast.

 To clarify, I select the table with the 3KK records and try to find a
 certain company. Because the table is now ordered by company name, I can't
 use recno() to tell in which position the found company is. If I move the
 pointer down or up, the position should move one up or down.

 For instance, seek 'WIDGET CO'

 The actual record number, as per recno() could be 2348897. However that
 record position in the cursor could be 1200, if the pointer is moved one
 down, the position would be 1201, or if it were to be moved one up, the
 position would be 1199.

 So, how can I determine the record position as opposed to recno() if the
 table is in any particular order, such as company name ?

 Is there a function that can be used?

I want to get the number of records in each of the tables in a database.
When I open the .dbc file as a table I can scan for ObjectType = 'Table'
and get the names but when I try to do a select cnt(*) from (objectname)
into array Cnt I get the message that The database for table ... could
not be opened. Would you like to try to locate the owning database or
delete the link (and free the table)?

Apparently if the DBC is open as a table it cannot be opened as a database
and the system will not let a file linked to a database be opened if the
database cannot be opened as well.

There are a number of workarounds that I can think of but I'm wondering -
Is there is a way to scan through the files in a database while the DBC is
open as a database?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Re: Quickest Search

2014-09-03 Thread Michael Glassman
I solved a similar problem by realizing that items in stock and other such
tables rarely get updated. So I added a field called Searchable that
contains the concatenation of all of the possibly searchable fields. Yes, your
file will be larger (though 10,000 record files aren't really very large to
start with), and you'll take a one-time hit when you populate this field for
all 10K records, but those drawbacks are negligible compared to the time you'll
save by only having to search one field in the future. Just don't forget to
alter your insert and update routines to include populating the new field.

Re: [NF] Recommendations on selecting/using a monitor in portrait mode?

2014-03-04 Thread Michael Glassman
Malcolm,

I've found that the key to successfully using a pivoting monitor in portrait
mode is to have as wide a vertical viewing angle as possible, which 178°
certainly qualifies as. With the monitor rotated, a viewing angle of only
140°-160° means that the screen will appear dim if you aren't sitting right in
front of it, and two people looking at a monitor at the same time results in at
least one of them having a compromised view. You shouldn't have that problem
with a 178°x178° monitor, though.

I've not had any problems using a mix of portrait and landscape monitors,
although there is one minor issue of which you should be aware in advance. I
have a portrait mode monitor in the middle of two landscape monitors. The
bottom edges are aligned (both physically and in Windows) so that when moving
the mouse from one monitor to the next along the bottom edge, the cursor stays
level. The downside to this is that when the cursor is at the top of the
middle monitor, I cannot move to one of the other screens without having to
move downward first. It only takes a bit to get used to, after which it is no
problem.

Every app I've tried works in either monitor orientation, but I like to have
e-mail on the left, working code/IDE in the center, and my web browser on the
right. I move around other windows, such as documents and Windows Explorer
panes, all over depending on the task at hand. The only thing I've noticed
about this (and it really only would matter to graphic artists) is that colors
on portrait and landscape screens don't quite match perfectly. Not a problem
for my work, however.

On an added note, I've been very happy with the dozens of Dell P-series
monitors we have purchased over the years. I've never seen a dead pixel, and
only one monitor has died prematurely (and was replaced by Dell within 48
hours!).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Mike

Subject: [NF] Recommendations on selecting/using a monitor in portrait mode?

I'm looking for tips on using and selecting a monitor that will allow
me to rotate it between landscape and portrait views. Portrait views
will be used for reviewing long code listings and single page technical
drawings.

Also curious to hear what your real world experiences are working with
monitors in a portrait orientation. In your opinion, what apps work
well and what apps should remain on a landscape monitor. Any vertigo
issues working with multiple monitors with a mix of landscape and
portrait orientations?

Background: I'm on a Macbook Pro Retina 15.

Here's what I'm considering based on my early research ...

Dell P2414H WHXV7 24-Inch Screen IPS LED-Lit Monitor, $220

[1]http://www.amazon.com/Dell-WHXV7-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B00EMB4K
VI/

My summary:

- landscape and portrait
- full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution
- ultra-wide 178°/178° viewing angle
- VGA, Apple display port, DVI-D (requires 2 cables), USB
- non-PWM backlight (no backlight flicker)
- text optimization mode (not sure if this is real or marketing-speak)

Thanks!

Mal

Re: [NF] anybody know how I can print or view this full size ( JPEG 2000 - *.JP2 )

Virgil, I'm able to view it legibly with IrfanView (http://www.IrfanView.com).
