[psas-avionics] Extended Temp Flight Computer Unavailable

2011-09-05 Thread Dave Camarillo
After bouncing back and forth with the advantech sales rep, it turns
out that the extended temp range flight computer board is not cleared
for the US yet. On top of that, it has a 12 week lead time even if it
were cleared. The notes at the bottom of the FC search page indicate
that we were going to fall back to the normal temp range board,
0C-60C.

With that in mind, I'm planning on placing the order tomorrow. Please
voice any comments/concerns/questions ASAP, otherwise I'll plan on
ordering tomorrow...

Thanks,
-Dave

Did the representative have information on the specific differences between
the high
temp version and the normal temp version?

That should be perfectly fine; I've never seen an e-bay go above 50C,
even in the dead of summer (like Kansas this weekend where mid-day temps
were around 42.

And, I hope no-one wants to be out flying rockets below 0C.

Yes, I know, it gets cold up there, but we're not in the air long enough
for it to matter.

Agreed. Also, keep in mind that 60C is not the max temperature of the
electronics, but the max temperature of the ambient environment that the
electronics are operating in. We can fairly trivially sink a heat spreader
to the outside frame of the rocket, which will be well under 40 C in the US.

2011-09-05 Thread Dave Camarillo
He didn't, it's usually just swapping components out for variants
rated over a wider temp range and changing how thermal dissipation is
done, perhaps larger heat sinks or something similar. In particular,
it has to pass their internal thermal tests. It's a brand new board so
it doesn't suprise me that they are not ready for full production of
the extended temp range version

Ok, so it doesn't sound like there are particular concerns over the
0-60, so I will proceed with ordering tomorrow

thanks guys!

Hey, now, let's get our facts straight - the high temperature was *5*
deg C out at Milican in February 2005, not 0 deg C. Well, OK, that was
the high that day anyway.

I think we're all OK with the tighter range.
