Ricky, I couldn't have said it better! I agree 100 million percent. The
material is a little bit outdated, I'll admit that, but for what you get, it's
absolutely phenomenal! In fact, I even find myself two years out from
purchasing it going back and reviewing things over and over. There are just so
many things Matt covers in this tutorial. Especially in the editing section.
I've gotta say, I would never be where I am today with PT had I not gotten the
PTWS tutorials. Words cannot even express how greatful I am to Matt for putting
them together. It really! truly helped me embrace the DAW at my own pace,
feeling extremely comfortable along the way. And what I love is, he doesn't,
for those who haven't heard it, just lecture you like, to do X, do Y. Once Y's
done, jump on your head, bark like a dog, then oink like a pig. LOL! In all
seriousness though, he actually goes through, does it, and let's you hear, and
shows you.

What I also like is, he not only shows you what to do, but also what not! to
do. There were a few places where he obviously undoes the action, but he
actually very intentionally epically breaks things in his mix a bit, just to
show you why certain things would not be a good idea in certain contexts. This
way, you kind of have that Aa! OK moment.

I absolutely would say he's gained my full trust. If he ever makes an updated
version of these tutorials, even if we don't get them complementary since we
already bought the original, and even if we get no discount for already being a
customer, that's fine. I'd still purchase them in a heartbeat with absolutely
no hesitation.

Any updates on the UA Accessibility?

2019-06-21 Thread Nathaniel Kile
Hello all,

I have had my UA Apollo for over a year now and have used it in a very
limited capacity. At one point there seemed to be a little dialog about
pushing for accessibility in the interface, I myself wrote a few emails to
UA with the contacts that Chuck provided, and had no responses. I know that
some have invested in the Soft Tube console , but other than that, is there
any hopeful news?

Question about session folder views

2019-06-21 Thread Nathaniel Kile
Hello everyone,

Since I have been working from my Glif removable storage I have been having
issues that I am not used to with the folder view of sessions. When I am in
a folder that contains three of my main PT folders, after I activate a PT
session and return to the folder, that session that I recently opened is now
in that folder, if I open 4 sessions throughout the day, they are showing up
in that folder like a recents list. This does not matter what keystroke I
use to open a folder. When I start my Mack, there are only 3 folders, by the
time I am done, there may be dozens of folders in the view. This has only
started lately and I am not sure what I may have done. I just need less
clutter and no that when I am in this main folder that only my 3 folders are
going to be shown, unless I expand them and leave them like that.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Now back to reality where none of those are going to be in the cards right now.
It's got to be five hundred or less.

I did find one other microphone that stood out for me though... The Majave

Hey guys,
Good luck with calling in and telling them that you have no accessibility
online. I tried that and it didn’t work and I missed out on the the $200
discount. I asked him if there was anyway that I could get this renewed before
my subscription was up and they said not in less I could get help myself. So I
missed out. Now if I want to renew it it’s gonna cost me 300 bucks. I don’t
mean to sound bitter but I think they could help us out a little bit.

If you are on a Mac computer, do not, not not not, do not open archives files
while focused in a Dropbox folder. If you want to see what's inside a ZIP
archive, copy the ZIP file out of the Dropbox folder into a private directory
on your own computer. You need to do this because when ZIP files are opened on
a Mac, they are extracted to wherever they are.
That means if you open a big ZIP archive in a Dropbox folder, everyone who
shares that Dropbox has that archive's files copied to their own machines
whether they want them or not.

That would be the same as Command Space bar. On the numeric keypad, there's a
dedicated Record button so you don't have to add the Command modifier.

the shortcut you're thinking of is Control Left bracket not Command Left
Bracket. The Control Left Bracket shortcut is to play the Edit selection,
meaning the edit range in this case. Technically, there's no difference between
this and simply pressing space bar providing you don't have insertion following
playback. Where this does differ, however, is if you unlink the edit and
timeline selection. Blind users would almost never do this. I myself have
probably done it maybe twice in twenty years. Unlinking the edit and timeline
selection allows one to audition an edit selection and a separate selection
elsewhere in the timeline. Note that Control Right Bracket plays the timeline
selection rather than the Edit selection. When the two are linked, the playback
is exactly the same since the two selections are the same. When they're
unlinked, the two can be completely different sections. One would often use
this to audition other sections in the timeline to compare with the edit
selection or copy from one section to another or compress or expand one to fit
the other's range. It's a bit more of a post production workflow although one
could certainly utilize it in music or other audio workflows.

Flo Tools allows you to Command-click the record button but, if you're having
difficulty with that and you do have a control surface with a record button,
you can hold down the Command key and press the record button on the control
surface and that is the same as Command-clicking the track's record button to
put it in record safe mode. One other option is to change that track's input to
no input so, if you try to arm it, Pro Tools won't let you so it would be
impossible to record over anything.

You can use the Control modifier along with the letter m, Comma, Period and
Forward slash to move the insertion back and forward by the nudge value and the
next greater nudge value. So, for example, if you set your nudge value to one
beat and go to the beginning of the timeline, pressing Control Period would
advance the insertion point to beat 2. Pressing Control Forward slash would
then put the insertion at Beat 4. Pressing Control Comma would move it back one
beat to beat 3 and Control m would move it earlier by two beats back to bar
one, beat one.
Hope that helps,
Slau

with voice over? It is funny about the console 1, I was just looking at it

Console one was made to control some of the soft tube plug ins and the UAD plug
in and now the UAD console. I don’t know how much functionality it has outside
of those areas as in if it can be use to control the DAW as well. Also It seems
PreSonus took some additional steps to allow some functionality with pro tools
in the fader port 8, that you wouldn’t normally get with a non Avid/ProTOols
controller, so you may still be interested in the Fader Port. Speaking of which
zounds has the fader port 8 for $100 off today.

RE: Is Flotools free?

2017-12-30 Thread Nathaniel Kile
I can second that.
There are no quick and dirty tricks to use PT like I found in Sonar. One has to
pay their dues and put in the work. I have run project studios with both Sonar
and PT and once I past the steep learning curb with PT I never looked back. Pro
Tools has been so solid for me in comparison to using Sonar on the PC and my
work flow is very stream lined now. At the end of the day it is still a matter
of personal preference though.
After not having the studio up for the last two years I will now have to role
my sleeves back up and dive into this Floe tools as well.

Hi Rory,
While a track is selected, take a look under the Tracks menu. Seriously, you
have a bunch of reading and listening and experimentation in front of you. It
won't be easy but it's worth the investment of time if you really want to learn

Pro tools with speech still active

2017-12-22 Thread Nathaniel Kile
Hello everyone,

Whenever I try to go to pro tools with speech, the page will not load. I
have been trying for the last two days. Is the page still available?

I have tried on two different computers as well as my phone. If it is due to
my internet security, this is not a good sign for the page because I have
very minimal settings and 99% of pages load for me with out any problems.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Hello Slau,
That is great! Thank you for taking the time to reach out to him to make this

Hello Bryan,

Thanks for your thoughts. I am going to hold off until I get this Softube piece

parameters, then I will know how much I can get into the full features of the

I've only used the buss compressers and fgx limiter and the parameters move in
almost unusable increments with voice over, if other slate plugs are the same I
wouldn't personally go near the bundle. I think UA is probably a better deal
for you given you have the hardware.

No problem asking again:

1. Yes
2. I use the cheaper autotune EFX and I have managed to cover all my tuning
needs with it. I believe the full version is also accessible for the same
functions.

Hope that helps

and as a result can control alot of Universal Audio plug ins as well since
SoftTube’s plug ins are also available on the Universal Audio Platform. They
have also made it possible to control the UAD console which is what everyone is
curious to see if it will give us access to the UAD console as VoiceOver users.

Hello,
It is not a traditional control surface. It is more or less a plug in
controller. You can make all parameter changes with the hardware unit and they
will change with in the software side. It has different plug in sets that are
model after different consuls. It comes with an SSL bundle to start you off.
You can YouTube it.
It is around $399.

Folks, there have been a number of newcomers to both the Mac OS and Pro Tools
in the recent past and it's worth emphasizing here to everybody who hasn't had
the benefit of long-term knowledge of best practices related to Pro Tools and
Mac OS. Here's the main bit of important information: you should not use an
operating system that hasn't been approved by Avid for use with Pro Tools on a
machine where you use Pro Tools. Occasionally, the latest version of Pro Tools
will happen to sort of work with a not-yet-approved Mac OS but you're taking a
risk by upgrading before an approved combination is announced. I encourage
everybody to pay attention to this aspect of Pro Tools and Mac OS combination.
Most people are unaware and should take note. For example, Pro Tools 12.8.2
does not support Yosemite. That doesn't mean it categorically won't work but
there were problems with the combination and avid has indicated that 12.8.2
requires El Capitan or higher but not High Sierra, at least not yet. My message
is not directed at anybody in particular because we've seen this issue several
times over the last 2 months. This is just a public service announcement to be
mindful of your OS upgrades, especially if you don't have a dedicated
production machine.

Cheers,
Slau
 will sort of work

 loaded plug in.
Because they are adjusting the knobs from a hardware surface, they won’t have
to look at the screen and can close their eyes and adjust until things sound
right. Given that so far there is no VoiceOver support in the UAD Console

(the software emulating a mixer interface for the UAD Apollo audio interface)
we still have to figure out a way to get the plug in loaded into a blank slot
on a given channel , before we can start changing it’s parameters with the
Console One (hardware control surface). This is why I don’t force the Console
one (hardware control surface) changing the game as far as allowing us to use
the UAD Console. In pro tools this won’t be an issue as the pro tools mixer is
accessible so we can load a plug in into a blank slot there and change the
parameters with the Console one (Hardware control surface). On Nov 30, 2017, at

Hi Charles,

Welcome to the list. I've send you relevant links for the Drop Boxes.

Regarding the Instruments, you should have them in your account already. Log
into your Avid account and go to your products. There you should see the AIR
Instruments bundle and Effects bundle. Be aware that, once you've installed
everything, you'll need to update the Mini Grand and Structure plug-ins. Find
those links in the Drop Box. Also, the account page is a bit funky and you
sometimes need to interact with an item to get to the actual "show" link to
expand the items to see the entire contents of the item. If you have trouble,
let us know.

When creating a session, toward the bottom of the Dashboard, there's a radio
button for selecting the location where the session will be saved. Select that
radio button and you'll be prompted for the session location when you proceed.

When installing libraries, it's best to install them to their default locations
and subsequently use SymLinker to move the samples to external drives. we can
get to that when you're ready. Hope that helps for now. Cheers,

slau

Console one was made to control some of the soft tube plug ins and the UAD plug
in and now the UAD console. I don’t know how much functionality it has outside
of those areas as in if it can be use to control the DAW as well. Also It seems
PreSonus took some additional steps to allow some functionality with pro tools
in the fader port 8, that you wouldn’t normally get with a non Avid/ProTOols
controller, so you may still be interested in the Fader Port. Speaking of which
zounds has the fader port 8 for $100 off today.

If you have trouble,
let us know.

Cheers,

slau

access to the Pro Tools dropbox Folder? Are there any other resources I should
be aware of for Voiceover users? One question I have is regarding the vertual
instruments included with Pro Tools. It was my understanding that Pro Tools
does include some virtual instruments, however when I tried to open the editing
session that comes with the pro Tools tutorials, I got the message that I
needed to install the virtual instruments from Avid. I clicked on the link
that took me to the Avid page for that instrument but it was telling me that it
was 19 dollars for a one year subscription. Is this correct or I should
already have access to this instrument? Any advise as to what I should do? On
a related question, I bought an SSD drive for samples. Any helpful tips for
making sure that I install the sample libraries in the SSD? I also bought a
7200 HDD for recording. When I get the create a new session window, I have not
been able to figure out how to put that new session in my external HDD. So,
for now I am just creating a new empty session and then I do a save as wich
does allow me to put it in external drive. I would appreciate any advise on
the best way to do this. I am using a Mac Mini I 7 dual core with 16 gigs uf
ram. I got the full version of Pro Tools withe the one year upgrade package.
I also bought the Native Instruments Komplete Ultimate. Can someone qoint me
out to any helpful resources? I think there might be a dropbox for the

aggregate device settings to have surface and interface

2017-11-20 Thread Nathaniel Kile
Hello everyone,

I am wondering what the set up would look like if I used my 003 as the midi
controller for PT 12 and then another interface such as the UA Apollo as the
interface for audio ins and outs?

I would like to use the 003, only to use the faders, mute, select and solo
functions, but could I relegate the 003 to performing only these functions?

If I could do this, what it simply be a matter of making sure that both were
added in the aggregate settings?

Thanks for any thoughts

Hi Nate,

I've had great experiences with both Western Digital and seagate drives. In
every case, they were either seventy-two hundred or ten thousand rpm drives for
the HDD models. I've used the same brands for the SSD drives for sample
libraries but not for recording. I've never used them via USB, although these
days, USB 3 is plenty fast. Thus far, I've used 1 terabyte drives but now
looking into eight or ten terabyte models for HDD. As always, SSDs are crazy
expensive when getting into those capacities. If this is for recording, 7200
rpm HDDs are plenty fast and you can pick them up for around seventy dollars.

I would always get Western digital red or equivalent, they are designed for
continuous operation and last much longer and you can get the hd and put it in
an enclosure which is what I have done. I much prefer the enclosure to have a
fan -- keeps the drive cool and lasts much longer.

I would have to go digging and figure out which of the projects were done on
that. I probably did a lot more mixing at that time than recording. The reasons
I got rid of it is I realize I didn’t care for the “analog hype”, as in I
wasn’t using a lot of the UAD 1176/LA2a//etc but I did end up using a lot of
the plug in alliance stuff like the Maag and SPL stuff. Native Plug In Alliance
stuff went on sale more frequently and at better prices than the UAD versions.
Also I could use a lot more without running out of processing power. So not
being able to use Unison and not using a lot of the UAD exclusive plugins I
decided to get rid of it. I do still have some plug ins in my account that I
intended to get a satellite card to use at some point but I still haven’t
gotten around to that yet.
I eventually ended up with the Clarett 8PreX but no longer have it as I moved
and had to downsize.

Hello Slau,
This message fell through the cracks. Thank you for the response. I may
investigate the remote again and re think all of it. When it boils down to the
quality and sound of Apogee VS UA, do you have an opinion that you would like
to share. I have very little with either, my UA experience is all based on
their traditional hardware.

Hi Nate,
When using it with Pro Tools, stuff like bit depth and sample rate are
identified by the session itself. The things that you'd need to use the Apogee
software for are items such as soft limit and, if applicable, analog versus
digital assignments to the interface's output channels. Also, any preamp
volumes are also accessed through the Apogee software. I found it to be
somewhat accessible, although as I mentioned, apparently the iOS version is
fully accessible. I only spent 10 minutes with the Elements interface at NAMM
in January so I hardly have a true picture of the potential. Much like the case
with other control panel software, a lot can be done with Keyboard Maestro. If
I upgrade one of my Symphony chassises, I'll surely go through the trouble of
customizing a macro group specifically for the Apogee software. Again, I should
point out the Apogee Control hardware (costing $200) that allows you to control
preamp volumes remotely. If I were going for an Elements interface, I'd surely
go for the hardware remote for instant access.

Hello list,

As some of you may notice, I do not post to the list so much anymore, about 2
years ago my life took a major twist. I went through a divorce after a 16 year
marriage. I walked away from a toxic situation and left all of my assets behind.

Around that time I started working at my local center for the blind and my life
took off from that point on. The Center was a grave yard when I first came on,
we did about 25 hours of training a month and it was a depressing place to be.
I was given the flexibility to pursue some ideas and build some relationships
with the local VR councilors and now, almost two years later we are averaging
about 150 hours a month in training hours and I am not only the AT instructor,
but I am the youth transition coordinator, the residential monitor with a three
bedroom apartment, and I also work with the local university as well as with
Dr. Denise Robinson, who was mentored by Dr Abraham Nemeth and Mr. Linux. My
life has been quite the adventure this last year.

In the mean while I have had the studio packed away and as of tonight I ordered
Pro Tools 12 to make the upgrade. I want to thank this list, and all who have
continued to contribute to the Pro Tools community, I feel that without this
list I could have completely drifted away from recording, but as I continually
see the messages in my in box and occasionally read them, I still have felt the
passion for recording flowing through my veins. As I move forward into this new
chapter in my life I hope to be able to pass this gift of recording with Pro
Tools on to others, giving the gift of a viable trade to other blind persons as
well as a love for music. I want to say thanks to all who have kept pushing
forward, carving out a trail for others to walk, you guys have put in so much
of the work and as people like me reap the rewards of your labor, I say thank
you and I take my hat off for your faithfulness.

More specifically I am suggesting those making music or teaching videos won’t
necessarily need the additional expense of Pro Tools HD and its additional
specific interfaces. A modern computer with any 3rd party thunderbolt
interface will perform on par for a lot less money.

Nah, you can't control it from within Pro Tools. It's a stand-alone
application. It might be possible to create macros to control it a bit
with Keyboard Maestro but it won't have anything to do with Flo Tools.

RE: PT Avid certification

2017-11-13 Thread Nathaniel Kile
I don’t know if I would be in competition on the angle that I am coming from,
On top of that, I would love to have a hands on curriculum to accompany hands
on training. Perhaps their training would be included in the program that I am
looking at. Theoretically it could even include a basic studio package with a
DAW, mic, interface and so on. I have been involved in VR plans that were
upwards of 70 thousand dollars. I would not want to make this a plan that was
that costly, only a fraction of the price, but I simply want it to be a real
quality based program.

Hello,
I am still going back and forth between the Apogee and the Apollo but neither
seem to be completely accessible. I am looking at the new Apollo's with the
quad shark processors, but the unison technology does not seem to be accessible
and I don't want to buy something and only be able to use half of its features.
What are you using? I am in the $1500 to $2000 range.
Any suggestions? I have a couple clean pres, and thought about simply picking
up a Black Lion Audio AD converter, but then I would still have to push audio
through my 003 and it is only fire wire and I want a stronger data transfer
than fire wire can offer.

If you do not have an iOS device to control the device accessibly, then perhaps
consider an interface that has some hardware buttons on it so you won’t really
need to use its control software. For example if you need to enable phantom
power or switch an input from line level to hi-z consider an interface that has
physical buttons for these features. If you don’t have a Condensor mic that
requires phantom power or plan to record an instrument like guitar or Bass
directly and also don’t plan to do any complicated routing of audio you
probably won’t need to ever worry about going into the Apogee software and just
install the drivers and start using it. Usually with most interfaces I have
encountered once the drivers are installed, you can select it as the audio
interface in your DAW and start using it.

The Plug ins are generally accessible however, the unison technelogy part of it
on their interfaces is not accessible. That means if you get an Apollo
interface the part where you select a mic preamp and adjust the settings of the
preamp you would like to emulate is not accessible. So if you just want to use
the plugins in your DAW you can get a UAD satellite card instead of the apolo
and use the Apogee element as as your interface.

RE: Running a project studio without a control surface?

2017-10-24 Thread Nathaniel Kile
Hello guys,

For some reason these messages went in my junk folder.

I will have to look at flow tools as I get back into upgrading the setup. I did
not know if I could use the 003 strictly as a controller, I don’t want to run
my interface through VIA the 003 optical because I will still be hampered by
the fire wire limitations, and I want to be able to take advantage of
thunderbolt speed. If I can use both then I would probably consider keeping the
003 as the controller.

RE: question about new audio interface for traveling purposes and good microphone suggestions

2017-09-14 Thread Nathaniel Kile
Hello Slau,
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question. I have been reading up on
the Elements interface now and am very interested.
I have a question, can you access all of the necessary settings through the PT
panel to take advantage of the Elements features.

Thanks,
Nate

Thats annoying as I was still considering an ensemble one day and they updated
the ensemble to use the elements control software now. But if the iOS app
works then thats a start. Hopefully One can pair iOS to the device or desktop
app independently. Thats the downside with the Focusrite stuff, you need
sighted assistance to pair the iOS app to the desktop app.

2017-09-13 Thread Nathaniel Kile
Hello Slau,
Would the Apogee Element Cut the mustard for a home recording project studio in
your opinion? I am looking at dumping the 003 myself and am in the dark right
now, meaning, I am not sure what to think about adding to the rig because I
have been off the grid for the last 18 months or so. I have a couple of nice
preamps, but do want to make sure that the conversion is up to speed and that
the pre's are bipassable, or extremely usable on my next interface.
If you have time, maybe send me a line or two on your thoughts.

Apogee Element is a bit more expensive but 8 I/O and the iOS app is accessible.
regarding the focusrite panel, I can probably make it pretty accessible through
Keyboard Maestro. Curious if the Scarlet and Claret panels are the same. My
brother just got one of those and I can probably grab it for testing purposes
for the software.

Hi Nathaniel,
while I respect your perspective, the only person who can honestly, and I
trust without pressure answer this question, is Ramy.
If, as you say, this is along time goal, the question is why?
Is there something required professionally that can be done no other way?
Or, is there pressure of the far from realistic reasonable or factual kind
saying that if others are doing this, Ramy must as well?
As a professional in your training field, I am sure you understand the
difference.
If Sonar meets your professional or personal needs Ramy, there is no reason
whatsoever to change.
Personally, your fear about the situation says a great deal to me.
While I absolutely resonate with the concept that nothing of value comes
without effort, agreeing with others here stating that the best teaching
comes from practice, there must be a firm deep and needful reason for you
to commit.
There is no other person who knows more about your needs, abilities,
preferences or desires than yourself.
You are the only individual inside your head, and your experience of
blindness and everything else begins and ends with you.
There is no need, or no shame, in defining your work as you prefer.
If fear is your only barrier however, understand it, and redefine it rather
than allow it to control you.
Just my 2 cents,
Karen

Why is this technology change critical for you?

Does answer my question, thank you very much.
It seems that you have found all tools to be useful in one way or another
regardless of the name brand. I can really appreciate many of the built-in pro
tools plug-ins as well. I always like to get other peoples perspective on these
things, I don't like to get hung up on following the crowd, I'd like to be able
to sit back watch, patient myself and get in my own lane.
Take care, I am still around, always lurking checking things out just not
actively asking questions right now. I am wearing about four different hats

I don't use Waves plug-ins anymore but, if you're using Flo Tools, you can
create a Plug-in View that will click on the coordinates for the parameters so
you can simply type in the value. It would take some sighted assistance to
initially find those places on screen but, from then on, you'll be able to
enter values after navigating and clicking the mouse. Of course, that would
have to be done for each separate plug-in. Just an option.
