Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long
I'm not totally sure regarding the whole server issue. I'll need to look into that in more detail too I think. In the meantime, I've borrowed an m box and a small USB Behringer surface to get me through the last few weeks of college, but obviously this is not a long term solution. It did get me thinking though and maybe I'm totally clutching at straws here... There is no problem with the latest version of mavericks, pro tools eleven point one and anything I have connected via USB, including daisy chain connections through my USB numpad. Its probably a long shot but what about trying a Firewire to USB adaptor? Nothing to lose I suppose so I'll try get hold of one and hook the Digi up that way and post my findings back here afterwards. Not holding my breath though... I'd think, it should. I know in version 10, which is what I run, it checked. I'm not sure if it'll be a software update thing like all your other updates, but when you open PT up, it should prompt you, provided you have an active internet connection. Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long
This is partly why I'd not do this on an audio machine. It's gonna be difficult to pinpoint down what all's running, but, generally... Yeah, you'd have to know the service name, specifically, then in terminal, you'd go... sudo /etc/init.d/servicename stop Then when done, sudo /etc/init.d/servicename start and really, that's a horrible way to stop services, as if you do it through the back end under the hood with terminal, things might not totally stop correctly. I don't think going to login items, nor going to activity monitor is going to be enough. Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long
Nick, What type services are you running with the server? This is not off topic yet, I dont' think, though I could see the potential of it coming so. I'm just wonderring your reason for using the OSX server to start with. The server definitely! will take a large amount of resources depending on what services you have enabled. For instance, are you running the apache http web server with it? Are you running ftp? Are you running Mail? I mean what types things are you hosting with the server. Over all, I definitely! would never, ever ever ever! run a server on an audio production machine. That in itself is asking for trouble in my opinion. If you're gonna run O S X server, I'd frankly, just get an inexpensive mac that you could use as a dedicated server. If server functionality is that paramount, I'd even possibly look at just setting up a Linux box and going that route. You really don't want a server running on your ProTools machine though, as you need to dedicate as much of your system resources to audio production as you can. Does that kind a make sense? Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long
I'm not exactly sure what might be causing these issues. I've never seen them myself. A couple of things come to mind, however. First, it's never advisable to update the system software before checking compatibility with Pro Tools, if that's your main production machine. Yes, I understand that it's common for a laptop to be a primary machine and double as a person's email & Internet machine and sometimes it's unavoidable. That said, the reality is that a production machine running Pro Tools should not be upgraded until it's approved by avid. Trailblazers are welcome but run the risk of erratic behavior. Similarly, the 002 is not supported in Pro Tools 11. It might work for some people in some cases but it's officially unsupported which means it wasn't fully tested. Also, I wouldn't recommend turning off Spotlight in general. Spotlight is the engine that runs search functions in applications like Mail. So, if you use your computer for mail and ever have to search for messages, turn Spotlight on but turn off Spotlight indexing for any external drives to which you record audio. Try switching where the drive and 002 are set up in the chain. Try plugging the drive into the computer, then run the 002 from the drive's pass through port. Folks have seen differing results from that. Also, regarding spotlight, when you say you disabled spotlight, did you mean that you added your drive to the list of exclusions for indexing? Re: pro tools 10 and 11 both crash during recording with the operating system held off interrupts for to long
I have also been experiencing this most frustrating error message reasonably frequently. I have tried connecting my external hard drive via USB instead of thunderbolt but to no avail. I tried a different hard drive entirely, same result. If I put the buffering settings up it then tells me to put them back down again and vice versa. I have disabled spotlight, and even Wifi etc and the problem still prevails. The issue is that it's so inconsistent. I recorded a two hour drum session where it didn't have any problems at all but the next time I set my equipment up, in the exact same way, the buffering message was coming up literally every two seconds despite many resets I am using similar set up to Nick, same Macbook pro and external hard drive theory but a 002 instead of a 003. Potential fixes? When the recent mavericks security upgrade was released, that seemed to smooth it out at first but over time it kept happening again. I borrowed a friend's 0021 at this point to check but unfortunately same result. Everything pointed to the Mac at this point. One morning just two weeks ago I was trying to mix at college and it became impossible to do so with this error message appearing so frequently. I shut the 002 down to mix in the box, knowing the process would take so much longer but my hands were tied here. Obviously this automatically changed the playback engine default to pro tools aggregate. No buffering at all for the next two hours or so. I thought at this point I'll try the Digi again and shut PT down, turned my session back on and changed the playback engine back to avid '%\002. I'm happy to say it worked fine then, with only maybe one buffering error every say four hours on average which still isn't ideal but can be worked around. As well as changing the playback engine half solution, the other factor I have noticed is finder. As a side issue, is anyone else having problems with finder when shutting down? The security upgrade seemed to fix this at first but now it's happening again and so I think are related. I've tried closing all finder windows whilst PT is running which again works sometimes but not others. Its that inconsistency that makes this problem so hard to pin down. Anyway, I had to do a location recording yesterday and I recorded a choir performing four songs with no problems, using a total of eight mic's using a spirit folio sx's first four channels as pre amps and running the line out from each channel to line in five to eight on the Digi. No buffering issues. Then I tried to record one guitarist vocalist with two near mic's and a room stereo pair just using the four digi pre amps and I got the buffering every ten seconds problem again. The size of the session seems to be irrelevant is what I'm saying. Apologies this post has got larger than I hoped but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. I'm preparing to go into college this morning and I know I have mixing to do and only three weeks left on my course yet I can't predict what will happen with my Mac and Digi when I set up. So if anyone has any ideas on a permanent solution to this problem I would be genuinely eternally grateful! Thanks for reading and any subsequent help you may offer. Hi, I have had this issue for a few days now in both pro tools 10 and pro tools 11.
