pop3 wired problems
hello friends if i chmod 644 Maildir (owned by user) then pop3 is not able to delete messages it successfully download from "new" (/home/user/maildir/new) folder under Maildir so every time it downloads all the messages old + new repeatdly , if i keep 777 maildir then it will delete the messages it after downloading them so can you please suggest me 1 my mail message store would be /HOME/USER/Maildir 2 user must be the owner of his home directory under which Maildir resides 3 i also wanna display mailbox on web as well as wanna give pop3 services 4 so what file permission would be required so that both of this work thanks in advance Prashant desai

Is there an easier/better way? how about setting the DNS first, and then you move your old server ? First you set your DNS with as low as you can for the expiry for a few weeks, so when you change your DNS Record, sites accross of internet can fastly change their records too. This is correct, but it is also beneficial to set 2 mx records, one is the current ip and one the new ip. If this is done at least 24 hours before the move, then mail servers on the net will look to both ip's to send mail. If one is not available, they will try the other. Once the move is done, change the mx back to the new ip only. Then you turn off your server, then move it as quick as possible to new location, turn it on, and update the DNS record. Regards Abdul

Help pls Unable to receive mail
Hi all I'v been using qmail for about a year with no problems. But yestarday I've noticed that my server cann't receive mail from some hosts. I see active (ESTABLISHED) connections from that hosts in netstat they are handled by qmail-smtpd (seen in fuser ...) they remain active for several minutes (tens of minutes) the droped. No mail is send through them. I've check connection speed to some of these hosts with ping -s 1 and find that it's rather fast (replay ~2 secs on 10k byte packet) Pls give me advise on how can I check what's wrong with this. And may be someone can check how my mail server (mail.ct.spb.ru) handle incoming smtp. TIA Alex

Local mail delayed
I have in qmail's queue three or four messages that are not being delivered. They are to local email addresses and I see no special attributes there. The local email addresses receive other mail, just these messages are not delivered. Also it seems that I don't get any log anymore since I upgraded the system. splogger is running, how can I tell what is the trouble with it?

Hi, This is the second time I tried to install qmail. However, I did a successfull installation for the first time, but now, I got some error. I am trying to follow the installation manual from Life with qmail. After I create my user and group for qmail, then I type in "make setup check" on the command line. I got the following error messages. ./ compile sig_alarm.c In file included from /usr/include/signal.h:300, from sig_alarm.c:1: /usr/include/bits/sigcontext.h:28: asm/sigcontext.h: No such file or directory make:***[sig_alarm.0] ERROR 1 I know I have been missing something. QMQP and QMTP: differences ?
Hi, I'd like to know whether there are significant differences between QMQP and QMTP. I know that qmail-qmqpc is used in place of qmail-queue so mail isn't safely stored on the QMQP client, whereas a QMTP client could be used in place of qmail-remote ( I'm thinking about writing a patch to qmail-rspawn to allow that ) and mail is securely stored on the client before the QMTP session. My question is : from a network point of view, why are there 2 protocols ? As far as I can see, qmail-qmqpc could speak QMTP to the remote server instead of QMQP, and that would make no difference at all. So why don't null clients / mini-qmail setups just speak QMTP ? Thanks in advance, -- Ska
Splogger(was: Local mail delayed)
Forget the question about local mail. It was due to a missing Perl module. Re: unable_to_chdir_to_maildir
Sounds like you really don't know what you are doing. Qmail can be setup *many* different ways so there is no definative answer to your problem - you must describe in detail how you got to this point. Then pick a problem email address and describe how that is setup, what entries are in the control files, where you want mail delivered to, etc - only then will anyone be in a position to help you. Changing the IP address
Hello, I have one Qmail Server with a few of domains (I use vpopmail). This server has got one Internal IP Address (192.168.0.x), and another Linux Server (with one internal IP address and one external IP address) use the portfw sentence for redirect the email traffic. The Qmail Server also has an invented name and domain that now only works in "internal mode" (with an Internal IP address 192.168.0.x). I must change this configuration. I need to change the IP address for one real IP address, and the name and domain name for another real name and domain. I must change the IP with ifconfig and the name in the file (/etc/hostname). What is the file for change the domain? How other files should I change (Qmail files, vpopmail files, etc)? Thanks for all.

The problem isn't with the /usr/include/bits/sigcontext.h file, it's with a file (asm/sigcontext.h) included from that file. Usually this means that you haven't properly installed the kernel header files. If you really think you have, go into /usr/src/linux/include. Yes, I did run into that problem. I increased the limit and qmail started working fine, until I rebooted the machine (accidentally hit the power switch :-) It's odd that qmail will work after I restart it manually. The only difference between it starting during the bootup scripts, and when I start it manually, is that it's tied to a terminal when I start it manually. spamcontrol patch
Hi all, I'm using Erwin Hoffmann spamcontrol patch and now I'm trying to bloc addresses without @ without bloquing void addresses (mail from: ) which are used in bounce mails and can't be bloqued. I've tried to put * !*@* in the badmailpatterns but it blocs void addresses. Is there a way to bloc addresses without @ without bloc bounce addresses? I think it would be nice to add to the spamcontrol patch the Ricardo Cerqueira maxrcpt patch or Chris Johnson tarpit patch to reduce the risk of insiders doing spam (in big servers you can't trust all the users and unlimited rcpt is a risk). BAD Qmail instalation
Hello one and all :) I have a coworker that attempted to install QMAIL on a production machine. Per Murphy's law The installation failed and took with it sendmail. Now, sendmail is storing all incoming messages in qmail, all are empty files, and for every one Of them a new child is forked. These children are then waiting indefinitely for something. When doing a "mailq" a lsit of files is displayed, every one of them having the annotation: NO CONTROL FILE. Can anyone shed some light here? What did QMAIL to provoke this behavior? TIA, Alex

RE: rcpthosts
Isn't qpopper for pop, not smtp? Why would the rcpthosts file affect it then? In any case, an RCPTHOSTS file error can mean either what it says (the site ISN'T in the file) or it could mean if your blocking based on IP addresses that whatever your tcprules.cdb file is isn't setup right. Make sure you have your domain in there, and that RELAYCLIENT is set and :allow is set. -Original Message- From: Z [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, June 22, 2000 6:21 PM To: Chris Johnson Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: rcpthosts On Fri, 16 Jun 2000, Chris Johnson wrote: On Fri, Jun 16, 2000 at 03:33:20PM -0500, Z wrote: well, what i decided to do was switch to qpopper and use the --enable-home-dir-mail=Mailbox and it worked fine. now one thing that i don't understand is the rcpthosts file. it seems like it would be a file that would decide who gets to use qmail as the SMTP server, but when i try to send a message to somewhere like freak.net, it tells me that the address is not in the rcpthosts file. so is this to say where you can send to? do they have something for address that can use the SMTP server? are they one in the same? i put '.net' in the rcpthosts file and it sent fine. If that server is going to be connecting to other mail servers and sending them mail, common practice requires a PTR record, and an A or CNAME record for that name that refers to the same IP address. Virtual Domain Message Header Pollution
Hi- I have qmail set up on a server with multiple virtual domains. I am puzzled by, and want to remove, extraneous header entries that end up in incoming mail for accounts on the virtual domains. Specifically, there are various "Delivered-To:" entries that reveal the primary domain name. If I am virtually hosting foo.com on my server which is primarily bar.com, I do do not want foo.com's incoming email to reveal this in its header. Is there a simple way to configure this in qmail, or am I forced to write scripts to process incoming messages? Thanks!
