No problems here, even with Google Cache.

FYI, what google cache shows is not a good indication of second opinion,
since what are you seeing there is mix up of actual page and cached page.

For the real cached page:

http://74.125.153.132/search?q=cache:81EvS442yJEJ:www.qmailtoaster.com/+qmai
ltoasterhl=idclient=firefoxhs=8ftgl=idstrip=1

On the other hand, it is possible that you have local problems:

From my site for example:

# dig mx internux.co.id @67.222.12.29

; DiG 9.3.4-P1 mx internux.co.id @67.222.12.29
; (1 server found)
;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

# dig mx internux.net.id @202.62.16.6

; DiG 9.3.4-P1 mx internux.net.id @202.62.16.6
; (1 server found)
;; global options: printcmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Etc etc

I don't know eyeOS throughfully but i _really_doubt_ that a WebOS (browser

a different approach to browse the web than use your own browser.

Anyway, the good second opinion is to use another user with another totally

Qmail+vpopmail+the X components that makes qmailtoaster in linux

That was my previous, extremely customized, Qmail deployment.

But qmailtoaster is for linux and RPM based distros in particular

You can find a lot of Qmail installation howtos in solaris:

Just a matter of curiosity,

Why 53 seconds?, why not 300 (5 minutes), since every mta I know retries in
more than 5 minutes ?

Did you use spamdyke for this?

The graylisting in spamdyke, afaik, acts only on e-mail addresses (the
From+To addresses), and not IP's, and I'm interested in knowing your
experiences with it.

I run greylisting on some of my mail servers, using a 52 second retry

Honestly, greylisting only blocks about 1% of the incoming spam - that's

spammers try again anyway, if they're still around in an hour or two.
For that matter, most of my spam is coming from Gmail these days.

RE: [qmailtoaster] Any experiences with greylisting?

2009-04-24 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Why 53 seconds? Because when you're blocked, you'll retry in 300
seconds. If greylisting was going to block any spam, it would
 have done
so with a 2 second delay. And my users complain when mail is delayed.

A real MTA will retry in, at least, 300 sec.

A bot will retry as soon as possible, if ever, because its time is valuable

In two hours a bot could easily fall in a blacklist.

Because the graylisting is not IP based, but the Sender-Recipient values, it
will not have any side effects for customers.

Choosing a long time to live and configuring good whitelists, will
help with this also.

I greylist on these machines by IP address, and as I said,
 greylisting
on these servers seems to only block about 1% of the spam.

I think, if it works as everyone here says, spamdyke is worth a try,
because it doesn't graylist IP, but the tuple (From,To) addresses.

[qmailtoaster] Any experiences with greylisting?

2009-04-20 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Hi list,

I used not to be a big fan of greylisting, given that it delays the
reception of legitimate mails, but given that spam is getting worst each
day, I want to try it.

Don't get me wrong, blacklists+spamassassin works certainly good but it
takes a lot of CPU.

Greylisting, if I do it right, could possibly reduce the thrashing of my
CPU, delaying only certain mails, not too much time, giving time to
blacklists (like sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org) to be filled with that wrong-doer.

I'm looking for greylist the FULL way (triplets, not only greylisting
IP's), but I'm open to any other solution.

  Any experiences out there?

Well, I do not inform here about all Clamav updates, because:

- I don't want to bother anybody (like jake), who is using his own time for

- I only report versions which correct known vulnerabilities, because, I
think, the community wants to be secure, or at least know how insecure it
is.
- Not all the updates are relevant.
- The clamav-updates do it for me, and has so low traffic, that it's the
same like being informed by a qmailtoaster-list user.

RE: [qmailtoaster] yahoo deferrals fix

2008-11-26 Thread David Sánchez Martín
Hi,

AFAIK, if this is not modified by a patch (which i really don't know),
the queue retry schedule is not configurable and it's quadratic.

It tries to send the message less and less often until it reaches
queuelifetime, then it's tried to be delivered again and generates a bounce
if this delivery attempt fails.

The retry schedule is explained here:

   http://www.lifewithqmail.org/lwq.html#retry-schedule

For example, for my 1-day queuelifetime (86400) qmail, it will try 16
(when message arrives, @6 minutes, @26 minutes, etc etc) times until it
gives up.

I really don't know what does a HUP on qmail-send (that qmailsend
doqueue), but i think it tries to deliver all the messages in the queue now.
Not sure.

I will create a few more accounts to see if it helps...

I have filled out the postmaster forms at yahoo at least a half dozen times,

It's ridiculous.

There are multiple threads in this list saying so. You are not alone.

Is a known bug, don't know when or if it will get fixed anytime soon, it's
not an special problem, at least for me, since it's getting all in a bunch
in my mailbox, so i can delete the duplicates easily.

Hi Rich:

There's a nice set of scripts called QmailToaster-Plus that is pretty
popular (and VERY nice, also) around here.

There's an entry in the Wiki about the whole process:

  http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/Upgrading

In my case, though, i prefer to update package by package via RPM as soon
as the are released, but this is a risky process.

Upgrading QT in general, could be a (sometimes) risky process, so i
suggest you to take an idle box, test the process of upgrading, getting
comfortable with it before releasing it to the production machine.

  Just my 2 cents.

We've been talking about that on the DEV list. Cent is usually 3-4 weeks

Just pipe it thru tai64nlocal, like this:

2: The teacher says she never got the mail, how do I figure out what
happened to it?

You must search it in the correspondent /var/log/qmail/send/* file.

Oddly enough, we were running an older version of the toaster, and we
updated it to the current version that very evening (About 6:00 pm) but
that was *AFTER* this took place.

I only mention this as I had heard that the older version of the toaster
we were running had much poorer logging than the new one, and is the
main reason we updated.

Logging in qmail was allways admin-unfriendly. It's great for statistical
tools but
not for seein it directly.

AFAIK i only had _unlogged_rejects_ (qq permanent errors) of accepting mail

On the other hand, I truly think dk must be disabled, in a current toaster

RE: [qmailtoaster] Qmail SPP

2007-03-07 Thread David Sánchez Martín
Hi Davide

I ask this question some time now in this very list :-)

See this thread
http://www.mail-archive.com/qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com/msg08041.html

SPP is more a framework by itself than a patch.

Is very attractive to have a fw that makes easy to control the smtp session
without the need of (more) patches (nor likely dangerous upgrades), just the
plugins of your choice.

Is like the milter concept (sendmail, exim, etc are not allways wrong ;-) ),
i really like it.

As stated in the thread is a matter of create a new dev branch and rethink
about the current functionality of QT and try to implement it with
Qmail-SPP.

If it works fine, is a nice way to go.

Cheers

RE: [qmailtoaster] Qmail SPP

2007-03-07 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Qmail-SPP have a great community writing plugins, that are more compatible
between them.

See, for example one of the battle-horses of this list, apply RBL
_only_if_not_authenticated_ , is resolved in one of the plugins of Roberto
Alsina's collection (http://ra-plugins.googlecode.com/)

http://ra-plugins.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/rblchecks.man.txt

If the user is successfully authenticated, this plugin disables itself
for the session. This is
necessary because most home IP addresses are listed in one RBL or the
other. This behaviour,
may become configurable in the future.

This will help in, for example, using residential/dynamic IP blocklists
without the worry of blocking your own users.

This is just an example, I'm pretty sure a lot of functionality will be
gained with Qmail-SPP, since not every one knows how to write a patch for
qmail, but plugin's are much more easy (and can be as efficient as patches).

Now, the problem is, who will have the time to work in this? :-)

Just my two cents.

Yep, you can do it temporarily:

svc -d /var/qmail/supervise/NAMEOFSERVICE

This will disable NAMEOFSERVICE temporarily

You can bring it up again with:

svc -u /var/qmail/supervise/NAMEOFSERVICE

See http://cr.yp.to/daemontools/svc.html

[qmailtoaster] BATV and CHKUSER

2007-01-31 Thread David Sánchez Martín
Hi:

Apparently, our toaster doesn't work well with BATV
http://mipassoc.org/batv/draft-levine-batv-03.html

BATV is used basically for avoiding fake bounces.

The sending SMTP server rewrites the mail from like this:

MAIL FROM: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

to

MAIL FROM: prvs=fred/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Being 3423434 a cryptocraphically generated sign.

When bounce returns, the server checks that sign and if it doesn't mach,
discards it.

I've received some complaints of some sysadmin that use this scheme, not
being able to send mails to my toaster

Some clues?

RE: [qmailtoaster] BATV and CHKUSER

2007-01-31 Thread David Sánchez Martín

I'm guessing that CHKUSER is rejecting it due to the '/'. I don't see where
a '/' is introduced into the MailFrom according to the BATV spec, but it's
possible that I'm missing something there.

If this is indeed your problem, you'll need to tell CHKUSER that '/' is
allowed. You'll need to unomment CHKUSER_ALLOW_SENDER_CHAR_3 in
chkuser_settings.h and specify the '/' value there. For instructions on how
to modify chkuser_settings.h, see
http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/Chkuser

Let us know how you make out. If a '/' is now valid, the stock toaster
might
need to be changed.

Hi Eric:

I simply disable sender checking, adding SENDER_NOCHECK= in tcp.smtp and
then qmailctl cdb

I do not see any advantages, and many inconveniences, in checking sender's
address format.

Maybe i'm missing something :-S

RE: [qmailtoaster] SpamAssassin cpu usage

2006-12-14 Thread David Sánchez Martín
Hi:

AFAIK you can always use ulimit (http://www.ss64.com/bash/ulimit.html) or
softlimit (http://cr.yp.to/daemontools/softlimit.html) for CPU time used.

Using it as a filter:

For example:

In /var/qmail/supervise/spamd/run

From:

#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/spamd -x -u vpopmail -s stderr 21

To:

#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/softlimit [YOURSOFTLIMITOPTIONS] /usr/bin/spamd -x -u vpopmail
-s stderr 21

Cheers.

Yes, I did killall spam processes before restart, and no Im not using Pyzor.
Is it possible to run spamd in daemon mode, and would that reduce how much
CPU it uses? Thanks

Did you stop spamd and then kill all the processes before starting up
again? What does your rulesdujour look like? Do you have DCC, Pyzor or
Razor enabled? I also found Pyzor to be a problem.

What rulesets are you running? If you use rulesdujour, I have found
 that eliminating:

 * *BLACKLIST* a blacklist of spammers.
 * *BLACKLIST_URI* looks for these domains inside URL's in the message.

These two rulesets are huge and can cause swapping on the server. I
removed them from my rulesdujour and things became quite manageable.

RE: [qmailtoaster] blacklist question

2006-12-11 Thread David Sánchez Martín
Hi Erol:

Since RBL blacklists are based on DNS you should seek for DNS queries and
responses.

Moreover, you should see DNS queries to your DNS cache server (that
configured in /etc/resolv.conf )

Since that tend to be very small and hideous UDP packets sended from your
server to your cache DNS server, and there will be a lot of them, is a
little difficult to find.

Do you installed djbdns? or bind dnscache? do you configured your
resolv.conf to point to that caches?

I hope that they're on a trusted network. If so, you can add an entry
specifying said network to the /etc/tcprules.d/tcp.smtp file which sets the
RELAYCLIENT variable for that network, similar to the 127. entry you'll find
there. Then do
# qmailctl cdb
to rebuild the tcp.smtp.cdb file which will activate your change.

Note, be very careful not to use the RELAYCLIENT variable for untrusted or
external (open) networks, as you will be configuring an open relay (a very
bad thing to do). As a general rule, RELAYCLIENT should only be used for
private (class A,B,C, not publicly routable) IP addresses.

 Not the case

If it's after data, it'd be domain keys, since checking could not

RE: [qmailtoaster] Qmail Ver.1.3 yahoo/gmail (554 mail server permanently rejected message)

2006-11-22 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Sounds like domainkeys and/or SPF. Try disabling them (in tcp.smtp).

Yep, It looks like SPF and domainkeys issues, because he doesn't tell
about his spam box ;-) , but AFTER DATA?

If it's before data, it'd be SPF, since checking could be done then.
Not the case

If it's after data, it'd be domain keys, since checking could not be done
until after the message is received. (I'm guessing here, but this makes
sense to me).

This fits, since he is using a Spam filter machine that perhaps appends
information to the message, breaking the sign.

Since Yahoo and Gmail are the best known DomainKeys deployers, this fits
also.

Two questions Midhun:

Which is the value of DKVERIFY in /etc/tcprules.d/tcp.smtp ?

Could you send me a mail with one of your real mail address (not gmail),
since i can reply to it and test if my DomainKeys enabled toaster can send
you email?

AFAIK you can limit also domain quotas (i don't use it) via vqadmin
http://YOUTOASTERIP/mail/vqadmin/toaster.vqadmin?nav=view_domaindname=THEDO
MAINYOUWANTTOLIMIT.COM.

Is up to the postmaster of whatever domain what he can do with that quota.

Howdy,

Does anybody have a good reason for why qmailadmin is compiled to allow
postmaster accounts to change mailbox quotas, including changing them to
unlimited?

Seems to me that considering the way most people would use the toaster
(hosting many domains), you would not want the postmasters to be able to
modify quotas. Is there a way to change this ability in a setting somewhere
I have missed without re-compiling qmailadmin?

Right, you can also do the same thing with vmoddomlimits. However, I have
never had good luck with domain quotas. If you read the documentation from
Inter7, they say that domain quotas are broken and that they don't ever have
any plans to fix them.

That is why I don't want to allow the postmasters to be able to modify
quotas.

Are domain quotas working correctly for others out there?

Do a qmailctl cdb (for making sure you have a good simscan.cdb) then send
us the output of qmailctl stat

This happens with all e-mail?

Only with certain domains?

Did you modify something in /etc/mail/spamassassin/* ?

Actually with the new qtp-newmodel upgrade is about as safe as any

your mail servers stay up until everything is compile, then it just copies

I totally agree, David. That's why I wrote the qtp-newmodel scripts to do
just that!

They do everything except the update ahead of time in the sandbox, so the
production server is not affected. Then at the appropriate moment, the
sysadmin can re-run the script, automatically skipping over everything
that's already been done, and apply the update (which is done with a single
rpm -Uvh command btw).

You might want to give it a try! ;)

This is because the limit of # of arguments in the command line

A better approach instead

sa-learn -spam *

Is a script snippet like this:

for file in *; do
   sa-learn -spam $file
   # And if you want to delete that spam email
   rm -f $file
done

This is slower but will do circunvent the problem.

I don't usually have more than 30 mails in my spam folder because i control
it in a more or less manual way (see previous threads on this list)

If the account get absolutely nothing but spam, you could add
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' to the /var/control/badmailto file. Note that this
would also reject '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', as the badmailto entry is a
qregex that matches a substring of the address.

Regarding the Argument list too long, I vaguely remember this being an issue
of there being a limit on the amount of data (as opposed to the number of
arguments) that can be passed to a program via the argument list. I don't
recall specifically what establishes that limit. There might be a way to
rebuild something (don't know what) to increase that limit, but I wouldn't
go that route for a number of reasons. Instead, shortening the directory
path of the files passed to sa-learn should help, but you're still going to
have a limit. I think that changing the spam-train script to pass files to
sa-learn in batches (of whatever fixed number works) is going to be your
best solution.

That being said, I'm really not very familiar with sa-learn specifically, so
there might be an alternative fix that I'm not aware of.

Harry Zink wrote:
I have a specific account that receives nothing but spam - it's a
client's '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', and it receives upwards of 300 spams
 an hour. It's insane.

What it gets is mostly waves of the exact same spam for days, until it
switches to a different type, then the cycle repeats.

What's odd is that spamassassin doesn't appear to learn - ever. Only
on this account, though (for example, on one of my other accounts, as
I dump spam into the 'spam' folder, and use sa-learn to teach
 spam/ham, it smartens up.)

The other problem is that it seems sa-learn has an upper limit of spam
in the spam folder, as I frequently get the Argument list too long
 error below:

 spam-train: /usr/bin/sa-learn: /usr/bin/perl: bad interpreter:
 Argument list too long

Mind you, this doesn't just happen with huge numbers of spam in the
folder, but it seems anything over 300 messages triggers this - which
seems odd. I used to run the script once a day, but am now running it
once an hour, but it still gets the same error (I have to manually
prune the folder down to less than 200 to let it do its job).

Any ideas what I can do about this to both make the account 'learn
better', but to also fix this limi error?

 Any idea are appreciated.

 Thanks,

 Harry

RE: [qmailtoaster] rbl bypassing

2006-11-10 Thread David Sánchez Martín
AFAIK whitelisting RBL should be used here

Rblstmtd (http://cr.yp.to/ucspi-tcp/rblsmtpd.html) accepts -b and -a
arguments

Rblsmtpd checks in sequence and when it gets a match, stops searching.

-a mens a whitelist, meaning that ip's in that list should be whitelisted

For example, say you want to whitelist the ip 231.34.32.1

You can have in /var/qmail/control/blacklists

-a mywhitelist.local
-b sbl.spamcop.net
-b anotherblocklist
-b anotherblocklist2

And configure the fake domain mywhitelist.local

Then create and entry like this (look, the ip is REVERSED):

1.32.34.231.mywhitelist.localA127.0.0.2

In that domain dns servers.

PS: Instead of doing all this stuff of making that domain and reversing the
ip and making an A entry is way better take a look to an specified dnsrbl
server like rbldnsd (http://www.corpit.ru/mjt/rbldnsd.html) or something
like this.

BTW RBLSMTPD= in tcp.smtp, as Jean Paul and Eric said should do exactly
what do you want,

The -a thing was just what i've done for my whitelists.

RE: [qmailtoaster] Automatic Archiving of Qmail mails

2006-11-09 Thread David Sánchez Martín

That's it and BTW you must look at qmailtap
http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/Taps

And you can then make yourself a script running from a cronjob that checks
the space of the receiving mailbox.

Something like this (not tested):

#!/bin/bash

YOURMAILDIR=/home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain.com/archiving/Maildir   # This
means you have [EMAIL PROTECTED] configured for tapping
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

if [ `du -ms $YOURMAILDIR |cut -f1` 900 ]; then

# Send an email... Would you like.

mail $YOUREMAILDIRECTION -s Your tap mailbox is 900MB or more EOF
Your tap mailbox is 900MB or more

.
EOF

fi

And configuring this script as a cronjob running once an hour, for example.

RE: [qmailtoaster] disabling CHKUSER_RCPT_MX?

2006-11-08 Thread David Sánchez Martín

No security issues, just disabling MX check for
recipients affect your relay users.

This MX check IMHO__only__pretend__ to help YOUR
users don't make mistakes in domain part of the email address of the recipient,
when sending OUTSIDE your mailbox.

The real effect is that temporary DNS problems on the
recipients infraestructure (for example, a DNS server not responding, it happens
more than you think, since people tend to use BIND ( eric :-P :-P)), that should
betemporary (your toaster must accept the message and try to send 'til the
MX problem is fixed or bounces it if the message is in the queue for too long),
become a permanent error to the user (and you probably get nasty phone calls
complaining), instead a bounce.

I did
disable that check in chkuser with no problem at all.

In my
humble opinion, chkuser is a lil' too much paranoid.

I have
too nasty non-that-standard email ids like john[EMAIL PROTECTED], and is
a burden to recompile qmail-smtpd to append ''
characterstovalid onesfor recipients and senders
inchkuser.h

Just
my 2 cents

I don't have much concern about it. Especially when some of the

Great!

I checked tcpblocker that does something similar (

(and a little change in source code to work with currrent toaster).

The approach of this patch seem really better.

Could you contribute your conf?

Or better add it to tipstricks page on wiki

Hi all,

I was wanting to limit the number of concurrent connections from a
particular IP...I ended up searching a lot and came up on the tcpserver
limit patch http://linux.voyager.hr/ucspi-tcp/ I managed to patch it
into toaster presently on my test box. My testing shows that it seems to be
working properly...I think it is a very useful patch to limit the
connections based on IP.

Any reason why this was not included in toaster. Will it be included in new
toasters ?

My tcpserver is ucspi-tcp-toaster-0.88-1.2.9.src.rpm.

RE: [qmailtoaster] RBL blocks my roaming users

2006-11-08 Thread David Sánchez Martín

A better and straightforward solution for this kind of stuff is enabling
submission port (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2476.txt).

That won't let spammers or wrong doers pass, and your relay users won't be
blocked by a RBL anymore.

IMHO this is the simplest and safest way.

It is not spamcop but, in his case, list.dsbl.org http://list.dsbl.org/
is the one that needs to be excluded.

I was asking same thing couple weeks ago, but no real life solution yet.
Look for How to skip RBL check after successful SMTP AUTH

Solution is that roaming user first has to be authenticated via SMTP.
After successful authentication, his IP should be excluded from RBL for next
couple minutes.
So some patch needs to be implemented, like this one here
http://xs3.b92.net/tomislavr/qmail.html

I did not have time to test this, but I do believe that this would be
solution here.

Hope this helps.

2006-11-08 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Another SMTP listening on submission port is not enough.

It must not accept non authenticated mails (and probably force to be tls),
because a spammer can easily bypass the RBL checks on 25 and send his crap
over the submission port.

Unfortunately AFAIK there's no way with current qmail-smtpd patched server
to do this.

With this combined patchset http://qmail.jms1.net/patches/combined-6c5.shtml
and following http://qmail.jms1.net/tls-auth.shtml you can force TLS and
authentication in qmail-smtpd.

I'm trying that with the qmail-smptd patched against that combined patches
and with the toaster, but with no luck until now.

Do we have a wiki TNT for that?

won't be blocked by a RBL anymore.

IMHO this is the simplest and safest way.

It is not spamcop but, in his case, list.dsbl.org
http://list.dsbl.org/ is the one that needs to be excluded.

I was asking same thing couple weeks ago, but no real life solution yet.
Look for How to skip RBL check after successful SMTP AUTH

Solution is that roaming user first has to be authenticated via SMTP.
After successful authentication, his IP should be excluded from RBL
 for next couple minutes.
So some patch needs to be implemented, like this one here
 http://xs3.b92.net/tomislavr/qmail.html

I did not have time to test this, but I do believe that this would be
 solution here.

 Hope this helps.

RE: [qmailtoaster] How to discard spamassasin bounces

2006-11-07 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Returned by spamassassin???

Ok, let's figure it out the problem:

The problem is one spammer sends you a forged From mail.

1.- If the mail From is not valid, is rejected by chkuser, no bounces

2.- If the mail Recipient is not a valid user on your mailserver is rejected
by chkuser, so no bounces

3.- If spamassassin says has 12 (by default) hit points your smtp rejects
it, so it doesn't generate bounces.

4.- If spamassassin says is below 12 is delivered to the mailbox. If it's
correctly delivered no bounces are generated.

AFAIK Only if is the case 4 could generate bounces just for 4 causes:

1.- Incorrect configured account (for example, alias to non existent
accounts)
2.- Mailbox full or something like this
3.- Redirects to another server that bounces the mail.
4.- You have a relay user that is a spammer

In which category your problem falls?

RE: [qmailtoaster] Slow pop3 login

2006-11-06 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Your keyboard stucks because they it like BIND, is a voodoo curse.

No offence.

Offence is getting 3 users without DNS

Thanks my ISP, thanks BIND

Thanks nic.es for getting .es domains out due an strange upgrade, thanks
BIND again

Serving authoritative responses is not the purpose of dnscache.

For resolving hosts use tinydns

You can resolve reverse the same as you do with any other domain.

You should receive delegation of the applicable in-addr.arpa domain and make
a PTR record for each host.

All the info http://tinydns.org/

Or use BIND and do both. hehehe

But if you let a program like that make a bistec and light the chimney at
the same time, you'll likely end up with a burned dinner.

You've been warned.

As for getting tinydns doing 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa reverse domain... I
don't think this is the way to go.

I don't do that and pop3 works very well with nat and the like.

Sorry, my keyboard got stuck and sent a couple of blank messages.

Hopefully this won't offend dsanchez, but dnscache can't be an authoritative
server (IE serve a zone, such as reverse dns). It can only act as a cache.

You can bind dnscache to localhost, configure tinydns on the ip address and
make tinydns a root, in dnscache, for the 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa zone. I
don't know how to accomplish this, but I'm sure that someone will jump in or
you can Google it fairly quickly.

Or you can run bind and do both on the same service.

Thanks,
Erik

If you don't use shared maildirs ignore this.

I'm learning about shared maildirs with courier-imap, and this was fixed
simply letting vpopmail enter that directory.

This is the permissions of that directories

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# ls -al /etc/courier/shared

I'm getting these errors in my imap4 logs:

I assume because I don't have any users using shared maildirs? Is there a

RE: [qmailtoaster] Slow pop3 login

2006-11-06 Thread David Sánchez Martín

sarcasmYeah, none of the stuff you said about BIND is FUD. /sarcasm

Yep is FUD :-), but a funded FUD,

Please rebate anything i said :-)

Can't blame BIND because nic.es and your isp made administrative mistakes.
I've been running BIND for almost 7 years, and never once had a problem.

Is a courious coincidence that the issues were updating BIND (And FYI, this
was an unattended update).

And CERT Security Warning are FUD too?

Is a technical mistake, not administrative.

BIND is to DNS what sendmail is to mail.

It works, but is insecure, ugly, difficult to maintain (hey, if you do
something with it), and with continual software upgrades.

You like it. Use it.

I'll do not.

The only problem with DJB soft is that he doesn't permit distributing
derived works in binary form. Just that.

I'm agains that policy, but right or wrong is his own decission.

Just a question:

Why do you use Qmail?

On 11/6/06, David Sánchez Martín [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 No offence.

Offence is getting 3 users without DNS

 Thanks my ISP, thanks BIND

Thanks nic.es for getting .es domains out due an strange upgrade,
 thanks BIND again

Serving authoritative responses is not the purpose of dnscache.

 For resolving hosts use tinydns

You can resolve reverse the same as you do with any other domain.

You should receive delegation of the applicable in-addr.arpa domain
and make a PTR record for each host.

 All the info http://tinydns.org/

Or use BIND and do both. hehehe

But if you let a program like that make a bistec and light the chimney
at the same time, you'll likely end up with a burned dinner.

 You've been warned.

As for getting tinydns doing 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa reverse domain...
I don't think this is the way to go.

I don't do that and pop3 works very well with nat and the like.

Sorry, my keyboard got stuck and sent a couple of blank messages.

Hopefully this won't offend dsanchez, but dnscache can't be an
authoritative server (IE serve a zone, such as reverse dns). It can only
act as a cache.

You can bind dnscache to localhost, configure tinydns on the ip
address and make tinydns a root, in dnscache, for the
1.168.192.in-addr.arpa zone. I don't know how to accomplish this, but
I'm sure that someone will jump in or you can Google it fairly quickly.

Or you can run bind and do both on the same service.

 Thanks,
 Erik

BIND works in the hand of a skilled sysadmin. The config files are straight
forward and not very complicated.

A skilled sysadmin like you is not the common (i really mean it, NO
sarcasm).

But simple things, and doing one thing at a time and do it well is the motto
of UNIX, and it works.

Who runs a nic with unattended updates enabled? That's just bad practice on
a production system. And no roll back procedure? Even worse . . .

If they use tinydns they wouldn't have any update to do.

Say, rollback procedure?, yes, it taked 2 hours.

Is a whole country DNS server with several replicates.

And CERT Security Warning are FUD too?

Is a technical mistake, not administrative.

I disagree. Automatic updates on something as important as a nic is just
bad management. Updates should be tested before deployed.

Tested with how many domains? 2 , 3, ten thousand, one million?, how many
replicates?

You are disagreeing with CERT Advisories too? :-P

Maybe nic.es is stupid (and it is) but if you put another stone in her
way...

BIND is to DNS what sendmail is to mail.

Sendmail is very neat. It supports a lot of features that are quickly
becoming mandatory. We're not there yet. We still don't have srs support,
which is required for proper spf to work.

I don't say that sendmail is not neat, i said is the same example.

Is the reference implementation. Is unsecure (do you remember infamous
Morris Internet Worm ), fat and very ugly to maintain (yep, it is and it
was).

Yes, the features that sendmail implements are great, they have a lot of
people working on it.

Maybe qmail community must do something with getting a more modulable and
extensible qmail.

Qmail is a good base.

 Why do you use Qmail?

Because I like the architecture, the community, the flow.

I do dislike that the license has become an impediment. Keeping features up
to date without the ability to ship modified binaries has seriously limited
the number of people willing to work on the system.

Yep, If DJB were a lil' more pragmatic will let binary modifications and
distributions and if he didn't like other people's code under his projects,
simply don't permit endorsement of names Qmail, or Tinydns or djb and that
trademarks.

But this is the only problem I see. (is not a big one, since you are using
qmail, doesn't you?)

Exim and postfix are good projects to look at, too.

The fact that QmailToaster is where it is today is really a testament to
the patience of Bill Shupp Nick Hemmesch.

Yep, I agree. Thanks to all the community :-)

I think that my qmailctl restart did not really work as well as a

RE: [qmailtoaster] How to disable SPF checking for secondary MX?

2006-11-02 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Why disable?

If the secondary MX is a MX this SPF entry should work!

v=spf1 mx -all

(the -all entry means every mail from this domain is sended from that
servers, in this case MX)

Or your secondary MX does NAT or something like this?

Argument list too long means that * expands in too much
files.

If you use bash, create an script like
this

---cut
here---
#!/bin/bash

cd DIRECTORYWITHMAILS # The mailbox with
spam

for file in *; do
 # Do here whatever you like to do with each file
for example

 sa-learn --spam $file
 rm -f $file

done

---cut

RE: [qmailtoaster] how to set nice level?

2006-10-31 Thread David Sánchez Martín

That sounds like it's worth a try, but I kinda doubt that it'd be
 effective.
spamd spawns the processes that actually do the spam checking (spamd
child), so those are the processes you'd really need to 'nice'. I
don't know if the children pick up the nice level of the parent or
not, or how their nice level is determined.

Yes, in UNIX, among other things nice is inherited by child.

[qmailtoaster] Submission on the toaster

2006-10-30 Thread David Sánchez Martín
I read something in this list about enabling submission port (as stated in
RFC 2476) in the toaster.

There's something about this in the toaster? ( or maybe i just dreamed of it
;-)

BTW, the message submission port is forced to be authenticated and with TLS
? (or it can be accomplished).

Moreover, is chkuser used for this port? (this won't let users send more
than N mails in a single submission, and wrong rcpt tarpitting, that's
unwanted, since this kind of user can use very big CC, and they must know
what they are doing).

Submission port will be great for RBL and accounting, too.

TIA

RE: [qmailtoaster] Better Idea to Delete automatically message marked ***SPAM***

2006-10-27 Thread David Sánchez Martín

Hi Anatoly,

Only for your information, this is THE solution BUT as stated early on
this list ( ;- ) ) this CERTAINLY WILL LEAD YOU TO PROBLEMS (non-spam mail
getting rejected).

It is better to use maildrop as per user basis to put mails that
contain ***SPAM*** in the subject to a new imap folder called SPAM for
example, and making a cron job that deletes old SPAM messages from the user
boxes.

   Something like this
http://wotsit.thingy.com/haj/mailfilter-spamassassin-vpopmail.html

But be careful and test it, test it, test it. :-P

Cheers.

SPANISH (via google translate, i don't have the time write the same again
:-P ):

Algo similar
http://wotsit.thingy.com/haj/mailfilter-spamassassin-vpopmail.html

Pero tener cuidado y probarla, la prueban, la prueban. :-P

Anatoly,

Just set the spam setting in /var/qmail/control/simcontrol to the same level
as spamassassin is set.

That way your mail will just be deleted.

Thanks,
Erik

Are you doing this via the command line? If so then you need to substitute

I ran into this issue when I first setup my toaster as well.

I was doing /home/vpopmail/bin/vadduser [EMAIL PROTECTED] and it

If you do /home/vpopmail/bin/vadduser firstname:[EMAIL PROTECTED] it qmail

Subject: [qmailtoaster] Periods in the E-Mail Address

I have a customer who likes to do stuff like
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and our server using the most recent
version of the toaster, that no longer works. You can add a forward like
that, but adding an actual e-mail account with a period throws the
error:

Email Account [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Guy Smiley) could not be added

We couldn't find any logs that would explain why it couldn't be added, and
this is the same version of qmailadmin as the one on our older server, so,
we're not clear on exactly what has gone wrong. A search of the archives
has not yielded any results related to this issue, and, there's nothing in
google about this problem as it relates to qmailadmin either.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I do upgraded spamassassin-toaster without removing the old package.

The only thing i noticed is /etc/mail/spamassassin/* being rewrited so

I was thinking about creating a script in php that would poll the

to be a better way or a pre-made util to do this?

I generally use a mail client, with rules (in my case, Apple Mail) to
perform such stuff, via IMAP).
or additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm a fan of qmail-inject :-P

Something like

cd Maildir/new/

for mail in *; do
   if grep -e ^Hey you $mail /dev/null 21 ; then
  /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject [EMAIL PROTECTED] $mail

done

Should do the trick?
