Aaron,

I go through an agency called "Student Experience," which is basically an
agency like you want to start. My understanding the company was started by
a paralyzed female in Grand Rapids, MN that was having trouble with finding
PCA's. She figured she can do a better job finding people then the local
agencies so she hires only college people that are going into some type of
medical field, that's how she got the name. I've only been with this
agency since last November and truthfully, I'm really impressed with the quality
and reliability of the girls that I have. Student Experience does a
complete background check of the people and they try to place the workers to a
client that is in their field of schooling. I have a psychology students
going for her doctorate, to physical therapy is going for their doctorate and to
nurses going for their majors. I wish you the best of luck in your new
endeavor.

Re: [QUAD-L] Mexicans-They Are Everywhere !

2005-06-11 Thread David K. Kelmer

Hi River,

Thanks for saying that for me. You would think those of us on this List would understand the pain of being different from others, and have that difference held against us in life. When things get down to a "them" vs. "us" mentality we ALL are losing the qualities "they" have to make "us" better people.

In the fall of this yearthe new Civil Rights Memorial Centerwill open in Montgomery, Alabama,to mark the 50th anniversary of the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott, andwill remind visitors that everyday people are responsible for the progress of the past, the work of the present and the vision for the future.

This memorial sits only a few blocks west of the first capitol of the Confederacy, the spot where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office to become President of the Confederate States. From Court Square to the north and west of this site the order was sent in 1861 to "reduce" Fort Sumter, beginning the Civil War. Ninety-four years later, on a December evening, Mrs. Rosa Parks began a historic bus ride from Court Square. East ofthe memorialis the Dexter Avenue (King Memorial) Baptist Church, where a young pastor named Martin Luther King, Jr., led the movement Mrs. Parks began.
Today, too many of us have forgotten the lessons learned over the past fifty years, and let intolerance walk freely among us. Will weletthe battle for equality among all peoplebecome a meaningless gesture? I hope not! I hope we all hereremember that WE tooare responsible for the progress of the past, the work of the present and the vision for the future.
As Robert Kennedy once said:
"Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of these acts will be written the history of [each] generation. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring these ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

Carol you really don't know what you're talking about.
Most of us have been able bodied the majority of our life number oneand have seen the same thing you see, you act like we never leave the house and I'm offended you don't think we know what we're talking about because we're quads, kind of lousy thing to sayon the quad-list. Believe me when I say "We see what you see and a whole lot more" because we are discriminated against daily and I feel like an alien in my own country sometimes so I have an insight you'll never know.
As far as every other name on the dockets sounds like they're only 50% of the problem.
I grew up in Southern California so I grant you I've been around a lot more Mexicans than you and all young men tend to whistle at women I know I've been in construction my whole life and in construction their is a big problem with Mexicans they work more hours than any other race and all I hear from contractors is bitching because they can't compete which is a lie because they can compete but can't find any one willing to work weekends they used to work cheaper but now they are paid about the same.
Do I like illegal Mexicans working here, no but if we were in their shoes we would do the same thing.
What people should really be pissed off about is outsourcing our work it's really the same thing, we outsource our jobs to countries that work longer and cheaper with less benefits.
What's the difference of sending the work to them or them coming to the job it's the same outcome loss of jobs, the only difference is the jobs we send to them are jobs we actually wanted and are the blame for loss ofemployment because most of the jobs Mexicans take nobody wants any ways.

Let's not blame the Mexicans for the problem let's the blame some fat, lazy ass no good sitting on the couch wasting space people in this country. I'm a C5/6 quadriplegic with use of one arm and I'm working like a lot of people on the list and I see people bitching about not being able to find a job but some how I did and it isn't because I went back to school or have a college education hell I only have a GED but I looked every day and actually had a job while still in a nursing home and it took me a while but I looked until I had one.
Let's think if everybody in America had a job nobody would care about the Mexicans but we're sending jobs overseas and won't work most of the jobs they take.'

Most of you are not able bodied and don't see what I see every day. A white woman is not safe to walk down the street. The young mexican boys will whistle and yell at the young women. If you read the court dockets you will see that every other name is a hispanic name. Maybe it is just KY because of all the horse farms and tobacco industry. But I know that when my daughter lived in Arkansas and the hispanics worked in the chicken industry they had trouble out there.

Dark meat chicken, or any chicken eaten with the skin, can have just as
much artery-clogging saturated fat as red meat. For the healthiest poultry meal,
choose white meat and remove the skin before eating. For the best taste, though,
cook the bird with the skin intact -- this will help retain the moisture in the
meat, and won't affect the fat or calories.

Are bed sores a real common problem with everyone here?
In 23 years, the only ones I had were from when I was in the hospital.
I've had red spots, but they've gone away in 1 or 2 days. I had 1 on the
back of my foot, from the back of my shoe being folded over. But that's all
I can recall.
I had something that might have been a bed sore, but we never knew for
sure. It was a funny spot that showed up on an MIR of my hip. It was a spot
under the muscle of my butt. It never broke through the skin, and there was
never a problem. Docs still not sure what it was. One doc wanted me to have
surgery, cut it open to drain it. But the surgoen said never cut open your
butt if not needed right away. That it could weaken the skin there. It's
been a few years and never a problem. I asked the doc to do a new MRI, but
said my then insurance would not cover it just to look.

NEW STUDY: AT LEAST 16
MILLION ADULTS LACK ADEQUATE HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE; TOTAL NUMBER OF
UNINSURED AND UNDERINSURED ADULTS CLIMBS TO 61
MILLION

Many Patients at Greater Financial Risk; Cutting Back on
Needed Medications
and Treatment

New York City, June 14,
2005In addition to the 45 million uninsured adults in this country, at least
another 16 million adults were underinsured in 2003, meaning they did not have
enough financial protection to cover their health care expenses, according to a
web-exclusive study released today in the journal Health Affairs.

An estimated 61 million adults, equal to 35 percent of
adults ages 19-64, had either no insurance , sporadic coverage, or insurance
that exposed them to catastrophic medical costs during 2003. The study,
conducted by researchers at the Commonwealth Fund, is the first in over a decade
to assess the growing numbers of underinsured adults and how their lack of
adequate coverage affects their health, as well as their finances and related
stress.

Until now researchers have
only surmised about the effects of being underinsured. This study, which
surveyed over 4,000 adults across the country between September 2003 and January
2004, finds that the under-insured are almost as likely as the uninsured to go
without needed health care and to incur medical debt.

Those most at risk for
being under-insured are people with low or moderate incomes, and those who
suffer from chronic illnesses. Underinsured adults were more likely than those
with more adequate coverage to face higher cost-sharing, limits on what their
plans would pay for treatment and to find that their plans did not cover care
that they thought would be covered. Yet, despite more limited coverage, they
also faced high annual premium costs. One third had annual premiums of $1,500 or
higher, while nearly half paid premiums that amounted to 5 percent of their
incomes.

In the past several years,
this country has seen a relentless rise in insurance costs and a major shift in
comprehensive insurance benefits toward plans with higher deductibles, more
patient cost-sharing, and in some cases, restricted benefits, said Cathy
Schoen, lead study author and vice president at The Commonwealth fund. The
result is that significantly more people face real barriers to care as well as
financial stress.

According to the study,
Insured But Not Protected: How Many Adults Are Underinsured?, these changes in
health insurance coverage are leaving more people without adequate financial
protection. This increases their risk for not being able to obtain needed,
quality health care.

Compared to adults with
adequate insurance coverage, underinsured and uninsured adults were
significantly more likely to go without care because of costs, to lack
confidence that they would receive quality care, and to rate their care
experiences negatively. Findings related to access and care
include:

  Half of the underinsured
(54 percent) and uninsured (59 percent) went without at least one of four
needed medical servicesdouble the rate of those with adequate
  insurance.
  Two-thirds of sicker
adults who were underinsured and three-fourths of sicker adults who were
uninsured went without needed care because of costs.
  Nearly half of
underinsured sicker adults with chronic diseases or poor health did not adhere
  to medications.
  Thirty-eight percent did
not see a doctor when sick, and one third did not follow up on treatments or
care recommended by their doctors because of
  cost.

Rates of medical bill
stress among the underinsured were almost equal to those reported by the
uninsured. Findings related to financial stress
include:

  Seven out of 10
low-income adults (household income 200 percent below federal poverty level)
were either uninsured or underinsured during the year

  Nearly half (46 percent)
of underinsured adults were contacted by a bill collection agency in regard to
  medical bills

About 7 percent of
continuously insured adults spent 10 percent or more of their income on family
medical expenses during the year. The study highlights the importance of taking
income into account in insurance plan design. This includes limiting
out-of-pocket cost exposure to not more than ten percent of income in general,
and five percent for those with low incomes. Yet, in todays markets
income-related designs rarely occur.

 As we
have all agreed before, arguing and stating how we feel about political issues
in here will never change a single thing...Only way to change things is by
lobbying and writing our congressmen and ladies. Even then it's a battle and the
wheels of justice and red tape run slowly. But to make changes it takes
determination and effort by many .Issues must be prioritized, as someone else in
here had stated. Many of us talk aboutall the problems with our world in
here, but i doubt it changes things as much as griping to a brick
wall.
LOL. Just my own opinionIt sure would help if
we find more to help causes as Chris Reeve and Dana did , and she is still
trying to do.

[QUAD-L] Sorry

2005-06-11 Thread REELQUICK
Sorry you don't see behind the scenes what I see. I see people desperate to stay here no matter what it takes and they are not citizens, not even legal to be here. The bosses look the other way and hire them anyway. They don't even file income taxes in april. They use false social security numbers but Social security doesn't care. They get the money anyway. Most are paid in cash but even the ones that they do take taxes out on don't ever report their earning but then a lot of Americans don't either.
I guess you and me never will see eye to eye on a lot of things.

I don't know how they got the name, "bed sore". I get them from hospitals.
I have an area that gets chronic small skin tears from my hips deforming. I find
that the adhesives on bandages cause as much damage as the wound if not more. I
use pure aloe and rub it in then 2.5 hydrocortisone cream. Heals my "chair
sores" overnight. I think the low air loss mattress helps a lot.
Themattress I have is 10 years old and held together with duct tape. The
folks at medicare say I have to have two stage four wounds to get the mattress
replaced with a new one. My skin has turned to some weird crap more akin to
tissue paper than skin. After I told my boss that I couldn't stay at work 8
hours a day my working career ended. I tried to keep my insurance too. I think
I'm better off on medicaid. Its just another insurance. I couldn't afford the
$270 a month that would pay insurance while waiting for my medicare to begin.
That $270 a month didn't include drugs or supplies.(two year waiting list)
Several social workers told me I was wasting my money on insurance.
I really hate how doctors and nurses can act so superior about the sores.
The only time I ever see a serious sore on anyone is when a doctor or a nurse
was in charge. The treatments that they come up with are completely ridiculous.
WET TO DRY bandages, heat lamps. I expect to see them start bleeding people
next.

It was a funny spot that showed up on an MIR of my hip. It was a spot

there was never a problem. Docs still not sure what it was. One doc
wanted me to have surgery, cut it open to drain it. But the surgoen

wow, u sure seem to have the midas touch when it comes to hospital care stacey. i hope you can think and heal faster than they can screw up. stay tuff and refuse to give up. you will have to come across some competent care sooner or later. speak to your inner self and emphasize the importance of heeling yourself soon. rely on within yourself for complete heeling as you are not getting much help from without. you are very strong, you CAN do this.
all our positive thoughts are with you. you go, girl.

Well I thought things were on the up and up and it turns out I had a set back. My incision got infected. I had some drainage, I called the doc and he sent me to the local ER since I had the surgery by him in Hopkins 2 and 1/2 hrs away. He told me they would open the incision and drain it and made me aware that it was no big deal. It turned out to be a big deal. I went and the local docs didn't want to touch me so they arranged an ambulance ride back to Hopkins (actually bay view, an annex of Hopkins). They opened my incision and hooked me up to a wound vac.I was there for 3 days and2of the days were waiting for medicare and medicaid to approve the wound vac and nursing care at home. What a joke. They will pay for 2 extradays of hospital stay but wontcover the wound vac and nursing care right away to avoid the cost of being in a hospital. I honestly wish I knew that it would be another hospital!
  stay, I
would have done my bowel prep at home b/c it was the night for me to do it b/c of course they never got a commode chair for me. I ended up doing the bowel prep in bed and I had my first accident since paralysis the day after I did the suppository. I have to do my program on the commode for me to completely empty. I was so mad b/c I was sitting up when it happened and now I fear a UTI b/c it got around the catheter. (I still have the foley while stoma heals). I hope I don’t get one but I get UTI's a lot. I also would have taken a shower b/c I hadnt washed my hair in a couple of days and we all know that we are not going to be offered a shower or given one when we ask b/c it would just be too much work. I asked and they offered me the no rinse shampoo cap to wash my hair and a basin of water to wash up. UGH. Frustration has ultimately taken it's toll when the PA came in to activate the stoma so I wouldn't have to go back up Mond!
 ay.
She filled my bladder through the foley and inserted the catheter through the stoma and there weren't any results. I'm ready to freak out. They said it could be there is still swelling and don’t worry we'll try again in a week and it should work. I’m really worried about all of this. This surgery has turned into a nightmare. The wound is still quite large and deep. I'm looking at about a month of healing time and praying the stoma works when I go back up at the end of next week. does anyone have any words of wisdom with the wound vac and/or the stoma. I'm worried on both accounts. I will be writing a letter to the hospital about the commode situation. That is not an issue, they will be hearing from me. Thanks in advance

What really ticks me off about all this is my youngest son married a Chinese girl last year in China. They are trying to do things the LEGAL way and get her over here the proper way but seems there is a 40,000 people back log waiting to come to the US. It is people from all over the world wanting to come the legal way. Why cant the Mexicans wait and come legally.
Do you know if you emply one and they have an expired work permit you can get a huge fine.
I did employ one several years ago and she worked fine for a while, then she started wanting more money and for me to pay her insurance so she could have a baby. I didn't have the money to pay her $15.00 an hr plus several hundred dollars for a woman of child producing years to have insurance. She just up and quit on me the day she told me this leaving us without a caregiver. She ended up working someplace else and having a baby thru the board of health and you know what hospital she had it at...University where I work. These people DO PLAN on staying in this country no matter what. What are they going to do send the parents back and keep the babies here? I think the citizenship laws need to be changed to correct the problem.
