[QUAD-L] About life and length of time as a quad

2006-06-05 Thread Danny Hearn
I am thankful for this site created by Jim L. and the other sci and disabled links that have helped me and others and their families deal with all the things that go with being paralyzed. Sharing info. on here has helped me a lot-covering things such as infections, pressure sores, medications, equipment and so on. Many times we have helped each other and care-givers come up with answer's to problems even when our doctors are not alway's sure what to do. Becoming a Quad in 1997 sure changed my outlook on life and of others with disabilities, it sure gives a person more compassion and understanding of others and their needs.I used to feel strong and invincible-like nothing serious could happen to me , man, was i wrong lol. I think most healthy people don't have a clue about living with disabilities like quad-life and etc. until it happens to them or close family members. I remember a quad i used to see a few times a week that got
hurt horseback riding-- I used to think.. man why are his hands kinda curled in like that..now i know why... I guess that is why i am amused at people and their questions like---how far can you walk without your wheelchair ? I had one nurses aide tell me that if he were paralyzed he would try with all his mind and strength and make his hands at least function nornal again ( he said he thought most of us quads don't try hard enough ) LOL DUH! Anyway i'm rambling to much but at least between us all we are helping to educate some people a bit i hope.
  god-bless you all Dan H.

I want to get more active. I just talked with a rehab nurse
who is putting me on the AZ SCI Newsletter. She mentioned Peer Mentoring. Has
anyone been involved with that? Either the mentor or mentored. I know I never
wanted to talk with other quads when I was in rehab, but my friend really liked

It sounds like its more than sports. Things like van conversions,

Just wondering if they actually have booths and examples, or
just some guy talking.

I use to bring a very large wedge because I can't lay flat flat. At some places, if the mattress is hard, I fold up the bed cover a few times (or use the cover for the bed next to me -- or both) and lay on that to make it softer.
Now I bring my Roho mattress from home. And for the night drangige bag, I hang it inside the hotel garbage can.

As a matter of fact, this is pretty funny, I am officially "banned" from Kessler's peer mentoring program. Funny because I brought the program to life in 1992 after 15 years of fighting the administration to start one. Kessler killed the "peer counseling" program 2 years ago then started up a "peer mentoring" program with 5 hoops a volunteer SCI must go through to talk to newly injured SCI's. Kessler is only "training" new people with their "rules" and banning the old SCI people, like me.

2006-06-05 Thread Stacy Harim

I've never been involved but some woman came into my room while I was still
getting some movement and feeling back from the encephalomyelitis and basically
told me that I should learn to deal with the fact that I will always be
handicapped. What wonderful words to tell someone that wasn't finished
giving up on recovery. Damn, that is what kept me alive to begin with and
the recovery since I got sick. What those words sounded like to me was I
should give up. If I gave up early and came to grips I will always be on a
vent and never have any sort of movement I might not be where I am now. I
just didn't have the damage on the upper cord that I do now that keeps me
paraplegic but if I just accepted where I was back when I couldn't move at all,
I probably would still not be moving. Anyhow I'm thinking to myself what
do you know? You can just walk out of this room, how can you have any
compassion.

When I got to the point there was no more recovery to be had because of the
left over damage, I really thinkI could have benefited from some sort of
peer counseling. I did meet one paraplegic that was outpatient while I was
inpatient and I met him while doing rehabilitation. His therapist
introduced us. It was refreshing to meet another paraplegic but he was in
a place that I wanted to surpass. I was bound and determinedI was
going to live on my own and he lived with his parents. Not that it's bad
but I wanted to meet a paraplegic that was on their own, working, driving, etc.
because I wanted mentoring on that sort of thing because that is where I wanted
to be.

I think that all rehab facilities should have a mentoring list of those
that agree to be a mentor to those recently injured. I didn't know of any
other para's or quad's except for the paraplegic and a kid that was quadraplegic
from the parallelbars while at a competition for school. He did give
me good advise though. He told me not to take any crap from the nurses or
aids. He said "It's YOUR body and you know what's best"

I don't know why Benny Hinn doesn't allow SCI's into his healings, but I doubt that with all his inside conections with god, that fool couldn't heal a mild case of bad breath.

I remember a quad i used to see a few times a week that got hurt horseback riding-- I used to think.. man why are his hands kinda curled in like that..now i know why ... I guess that is why i am amused at people and their questions like---how far can you walk without your wheelchair ? I had one nurses aide tell me that if he were paralyzed he would try with all his mind and strength and make his hands at least function nornal again ( he said he thought most of us quads don't try hard enough ) LOL DUH ! Anyway i'm rambling to much but at least between us all we are helping to educate some people a bit i hope. god-bless you all Dan H.

Steph,, Did you see a white light? i never saw a white light. Everyone said there would be a white light. I'd meet dead relatives,, or at least St. Peter. Honest,, it was just poof..no pain, no more hassle, nothing. I think the dying part was almost comfortable compared to the injury that got me there and oohhmmyy,, it hurts to be brought back! I have my DNR filled out now.

Yup, when I became stricken with TM I kept telling the nursing and respiratory staff I couldn't breathe but they refused to believe me (cuz my color was good??) until I died and they had to resusitate me then put me on a vent that I stayed on for 6 months. But, the actual dying part wasn't so bad I just got very tired of struggling and simply lost conciousness and poof I was gone.

Re: [QUAD-L] morphine pump

2006-06-05 Thread DeLiMiTeD4

If morphine works, I'd consider the pump. I'd try the morphine by patch first or orally. But, that is me. I'm not real fond of having stuff installed that "might" cause other problems. I actually do pretty well with hydrocodone and valium. Hell, I had seizure this afternoon. Maybe, deep down,I like the pain.

I am taking MS Contin, 50mg, 3x a day. It’s not working as well. It’s ok during the day, but in the evenings my back really hurts. It has helped my arms a lot though. But now my doc suggested the Morphine Pump. Anyone else use it? How well do you like it? I worry it will have problems in the future. How bad or risky is the operation?
Thanks,

[QUAD-L] White light?

2006-06-05 Thread S. Dial

No, didn't see anything
just had the sensation I was being carried away in someone's arms then that I
was THROWN back and then it felt like lighting exploded in my head (I attribute
this to defribillator shock) and then I was back among the living.

I passed out from a kid choking me in high school. Pretty painless
actually, struggling then black. No bright lights - BUT I was gone
about 15 seconds.
I did float up after breaking my neck. Pretty cool feeling floating
around. Then my buddy shook me awake - back to reality. No
real pain involved tho - just a minor stiff neck.

Just curious as to who among you are vent dependant. How do you manage for full time care? Do you have nurses or family members that help you? How often do you go out to dinner or shopping or just for fun? Amy __Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Interesting also. Do you realize that a hundred of us will
account for about 2000 collective years of SCI living?
  Jesus, that's a long time !!! :-)
